I am seeing a trend now in non-fiction that looks at how newer technologies are ruining (and running) our lives.
The author looks at how new technologies are alienating from a socio-cultural perspective. I had never thought of computer-related technologies this way before. I don't think I could change a tire on my new car, if I wanted to. I just don't have the "tools".
The author ends a somewhat tragic look at new technology with this idea, "The awe generated by modern technology is replaced by a sober understanding of how tools do what they are supposed to do and why tools often become difficult to work with. Overcoming alienation from technology is indeed a process of gaining a new rationalism that allows a user to look at technological developments as part of a larger interconnected fabric of life where the tools are really meant to enhance a good quality of life rather than create problems because of our indiscriminate and blind use of tools". p. 192.
