4.5 stars, the half star lost for quibbling ideological reasons. This is a very evocative, kaleidoscopic look into the momentous events of the guerilla struggle in Cuba. Yet it is also sparing, modest, and exacting. Some accounts of battles feel anti-climactic because Che refused melodrama and exaggeration; in fact, he dwells much more on mistakes by himself and other guerillas than on the glories of victory — understanding full well there is more to learn from defeats.
