Sharing: Book One of The Fold

Rate this book
Part One of The Fold , a psychic saga in seven volumes. In the dead of night, six children leave a home for at-risk youth on the back of a fantastical flying creature--one who appears to the children as a white unicorn whose horn has been replaced with a long black blade--who brings them to a strange, seething desert that contains only a cathedral, a diner, and hypnotically shifting trees. There, they must learn to understand one another, or they must die. Miracle Jones's THE FOLD is a saga, in seven projected volumes, of a band of psychic malcontents struggling to hold onto what order they can in an evolving, hostile multiverse. The Fold is a story about willpower, about a city carved into the brain of a giant octopus, about the seeds of politics, about succulent diner meals, about the offscourings of society, and about what it feels like to use your mind to fly. "Combines the prose of David Mitchell or Tom Robbins with the ideas and raw insights into humanity of Kurt Vonnegut . . . If I were to recommend one lesser known indie author, it's Miracle Jones."--Jeremy Blaustein, translator of Metal Gear Solid " Chronicles of Narnia meets William Burroughs by way of Texas Chainsaw Massacre . . .highly recommended to the strong of heart and stomach."--Tom Moody Fiction.

I really like this book. I actually read the second book first, so going back to this one explained a lot of things. It is hard to say much about it without giving anything away. There is a lot of violence, a lot of graphic sexual imagery, and a lot of mind bending madness. If you are bored with reading the same story over and over this is a good remedy. I think of it as being a kind of bizarre mixture of Kurt Vonnegut and Robert Heinlein

A young adult book definitely not for kids. The orphaned female protagonist hooked me in from the start - a wonderfully complex character unexpected in a novel of such wild imagination. I can't write of the plot because its pleasure is in the constant surprise. The second volume, Shifting, is both more fantastical and more conventional and also well worth the read. I await the third in the series.

Wow. Has the unlimited imagination you find and are captivated by in Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy. Also reminded me of American Gods in the way it handles its imaginary world. This book was read more veraciously than I've read in a long while.

Every bit as good as the first book in the Golden Compass Trilogy. Written in the style of a YA title but this is definitely not a YA title in content.

I love this novel so much. It's one of the most startlingly original books I've ever read and I'm honestly jealous of anyone encountering it for the first time. The whole book is a thrilling, sad, funny, wondrous surprise.

This is so fucking good and I'm mad that Shifting got taken off the market to pace out the releases through Instar but I'm looking forward to it. You should buy this and read it, you idiot.

This has all the pros and cons of indie published books - it is crazy creative, massive and unusual worldbuilding, but could really use some editing. I almost gave up at the beginning as it was almost too weird to process, and the writing was as simplistic as a children's book, which is confusing as it has a definite adult edge to the plot. Once the story got going, either the writing got better or the story got interesting enough that I didn't notice.

I'd love to see what the author could do with a sympathetic editor that could trim the excesses and smooth the story out.

So, so enjoyed this. A breath of very unusual fresh air. Things in this book are different, and they keep being different and getting more different.... And still a wonderful tale, with interesting characters, ones I cared about deeply. So not so different that you end up lost, as with some weird fiction. If you're curious, don't hesitate.

I've already read the second in the series, and it is even better, in my opinion. Thank you Miracle Jones! Keep going, please! I will keep reading.

It's very hard to rate this book. I feel it was both terribly written, and also terribly entertaining.
