A sweet gift from London to add to my Paul Thek collection. The painting in reference is from Paul’s later-in-life series of childlike acrylic paintings (one of my favorites being 1980’s Bambi Growing) which weren’t highly regarded or well-received at the time. 1985’s Eye With Comet is an interesting piece to select for review/analysis in that it’s not a particularly interesting or technical painting. My favorite write-ups in this collection were by the writers who wrote of Thek and Co (Wojnarowicz! Hujar! Sontag!). The factual pieces that focus on the life and times of those individuals were great as were the creative fictional pieces that were also joyous to read. Louis Shankar’s contribution was among my favorites.
