Hey guys its Jessica. Sorry I’ve been MIA for so long. I apologize for the long overdue wait for Janet’s next book. You’ve all been very patient and loyal fans that she loves. She has been working on this book over the last year and a half while dealing with her battle with cancer. It saddens me to say that she peacefully lost this battle this past weekend while her family was by her side. I apologize if this feels sudden, she was a very private person even to her family. And she truly thought of all of you as her family. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Janet Chapman is the author of twenty-two contemporary and magical romance novels, all of which are set in her beautiful state of Maine. She lives in a cozy log home on a beautiful lake with her husband, surrounded by an eclectic assortment of wildlife that she finds both entertaining and inspiring. Probably best known for her Highlander Series (a saga of twelfth century warriors rebuilding their clans in modern-day Maine that now spans three generations), Janet also has two spin-off magical series (Midnight Bay & Spellbound Falls) and several contemporary family series set on the coast and in the mountains. With over three million books printed in six languages, her stories regularly appear on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller’s lists.

When she’s not writing (well, when she should to be writing but isn’t), Janet and her husband are traveling the state in their camper throughout all four seasons; hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and generally rubbing elbows with Mother Nature while always keeping an eye out for colorful new characters—human and beast—to put in her stories.

This is without a doubt my favourite book out of the series! I really loved our main two characters, their banter was just so entertaining and I loved every second of it. Nicolas is by far my favourite male character out of the series, I want my own version of him! Another thing I really loved was his cats, they really added to the story and I honestly wish I could take them all home with me.

Update on Ms. Chapman: "It is with my deepest sorrow that I am to inform you of the death of our beloved : Janet Chapman passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2017, with a long battle of cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones. Janet was a truly marvelous woman, I will greatly miss her. Please pray for her husband and family. ~Vanetta “keep sprinkling the magic”"

This is one of my very favorite author's -as a matter of fact, I just finished a re-re-re-read of almost all her book, last week. I had a suspicion that something like this was going to happen when her next books publication date kept changing and Amazon made it "not available" instead of pre-order. I will miss this author's wonderful way with words, magic, and love -nobody can ever take her place.

I always hope that I stay alive long enough for my favorite author's to finish their series -but I have never thought about the fact that *they* can die before they have finished. This loss brings that fact home to me.

I have loved reading Ms. Chapman’s books for years now. Ever since I found her first series about the time traveling Highlanders. However, these new shorter series are even more outstanding and The Heart of a Hero is nearly the best yet…yes, I said nearly!

I felt that there was just something a tiny bit off with this book.

This book is about Nicholas, with no last name! He is a mythical and mystical time traveler (sort of) from the lost Island of Atlantis. He is the head of security at Nova Mare and has been head of security for about a year. This is where he meets with Julia, a seemingly disaster prone woman \who lives with her abusive father so she can save money to get her younger sister out of this small town and to give her a college education.

There are so many wonderful characters in this novel that you can sometimes have a little difficulty keeping some of them straight. But, as you keep reading it all becomes clear and the first few chapters are quite exciting as Nicholas tries to be a hero and save Julia from one of her father’s drunken, violent rampages.

My problem is this – the father plays such an important role in these chapters, that it totally surprised me that Julia and Nicholas didn’t have another confrontation with him later in the book just to close that plot line. I have not know Ms. Chapman to have done something like this before. She will add to the starting issue but never just drop it like this.
There are several other plot lines running at the same time. Of course, there is Nicholas’s and Julia’s sort of romance. Then there is one that includes Rana, Titus’s wife and is the basis for Ms. Chapman’s next book out in August (For the Love of Magic).

As usual, all of the characters a written with depth, quirks and the capacity to see the magic all around them. They have that ability to be strong women, but to know just when to let the loves of their lives take over. The secondary characters really make this a more complete story. The descriptions of the Maine countryside really makes me want to go back and find my own Spellbound Falls.

I loved Nicholas from the very start but I expected more by this book. It was a sort of anticlimatic story in which nothing happened but a bunch of females pregnant again.

Nicholas was Lina's "bodyguard" or better guardian, but after she became Jane and went to live with Alec MacKeage he has nothing to do.
He's already security chief of Olivia's resort and when he meets Julia it seems love at first sight. As the previous book I didn't find so many romantic moments and I got the impression that the only ones trying to really court Julia were Nicholas' cats LOL

Besides the end was a bit full of gods of any nationality for me. Paranormal effect too mythological!

All at all, this last series was a bit boring for me and a bit too mythological so I'm stopping here for the moment.

Loved both the hero and the heroine! Characterization, editing, and writing were all great. My only criticism is that it seemed like a lot of the important action took place “off stage,” especially toward the end of the book. As the reader, I felt a bit cheated. That said, I will definitely try another book in the series.

Author: Janet Chapman
First published: 2013
Length: 353 pages
Setting: Contemporary. Maine.
Sex: Infrequent. Reasonably explicit.
Hero: Director of Security. Magic.
Heroine: Cleaner.
Trigger: Domestic abuse by alcoholic father.
Includes: Letter from author.
Paranormal: Previous books have characters who time-travel, come from Atlantis, have god-like powers, magic, shape-shifting. Nicholas is from Atlantis and has some mysterious powers.

Note the Spellbound Falls series is heavily linked to Chapman’s other paranormals.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. The paranormal works, the relationship development is enjoyable and sweet and Julia finds her own.

A good read.

After spending 31 years guarding and protecting Carolina, princess of Atlantis, Nicholas’s job is done. A year ago he took position of Director of Security at Nova Mare in Spellbound Falls, Maine, an upscale resort owned by Mac and Olivia Oceanus. Nicholas washed up on the shores of Atlantis as an infant, was adopted by a lovely family and has spent his life in service to the royal family. He regularly takes on mythological gods, foreign royalty and various armies through out time. But for some reason this “most eligible bachelor” can’t nail down the one woman he actually wants. Julia Campbell has been put through the ringer by men in her thirty years, her father is the town drunk, her ex-husband divorced her after she put him through school, leaving her with a mountain of credit card debt and an undeserved reputation as a slut. She has absolutely no desire to get involved with anyone again and she definitely doesn’t need a hero. Especially the blue-eyed, hunky, hard bodied man who every woman in town is chasing after.

Whenever I think of how to describe Janet Chapman’s writing the one word I think of is: Charming. Her heroes are full of old world courage and charisma trying to acclimate themselves in these modern times while falling in love with twenty- first century woman. They are surrounded by friends, family, magic and loyalty. The very best part of this author’s books are her wonderful characters. They just leave you smiling and with a feeling of contentment. The women are every woman who reads romance, tired, busy, with a life full of challenges and yet trying to overcome what ever life throws at them. They are swept away by men who are willing to do anything to protect them and give them everything they deserve. The very reason I started reading romance.

Nicholas hasn’t found the woman he wants to spend his life with until he comes across the contrary, guarded Julia. He comes to her rescue one evening when he helps her out in a situation involving her father. When he protects her a second time he decides that this is someone he would like to court. The only problem is Julia has no desire to be courted. She actively avoids him, rebuffing him time and again, even going as far as to climb out windows and hide behind trees to prevent from running into him. For the life of her she can’t figure out why such a tall, sexy, strong man would want to date the girl in town with the worst reputation. Not to mention if any of the woman chasing him figure out he is interested in her they just might do her bodily harm.

This was a fun read, the manic heroine running around, getting talked into a job she thinks is too big for her, trying to figure out how to help her family, dodging the hero, just to end up falling for him anyway. Julia is funny and strong. I admired her determination to solve her problems on her own. She has her reasons for not wanting to get involved in another relationship. Nicholas was the laid back gentleman to her craziness. He basically outlasts her, wearing her down until she realizes she’s fallen in love and doesn’t want to live with out him. Their romance was heart warming, slow and sweet. With just the right amount of angst and some pretty great sexy times. Julia is just as crazy during sex, ripping Nicholas’s clothes off and doing dirty things to him when all he was trying to get was a kiss. She thinks of them as one night stands, while he is pretty sure they are in a relationship. Only in relationships the woman doesn’t generally climb out the window and run home immediately after lovemaking. Poor Nicholas, I was rooting for him the whole time.

Julia isn’t introduced to the “magic” of Spellbound Falls until the end and of course she reasons it out in her own humorous, quirky way. The conclusion was fun and lovely and left me looking forward to Janet Chapman’s next release. If you haven’t given this author a try yet, I would urge you to do so. Take a break from the angsty, dramatic, action filled suspenses and try relaxing with one of her warm, funny romances. Final Grade: B

Favorite Quote:

“H-how many bedrooms are you planning to build?”
He lifted gleaming eyes to hers. “I was thinking… six.”
“You want six kids?” she squeaked.
“Sons— six sons.”
“Well, good luck growing a uterus,” she snapped, bolting down the hall.
Holy Hades, that should teach her to be careful what she wished for!

(May) 2.5* How do you break up with an author? I have read everything Janet Chapman has published, I think. I liked some more than others, and there are a couple of non-magical ones I truly loved (The Seductive Imposter is one of my all time favorite contemporary romances). Her Midnight Bay books were a step down from her Pine Creek Highlanders, and the Spellbound Falls are another step down. She creates heros I’ve enjoyed, but her heroines for the most part leave something to be desired (whiney, annoying, confused and confusing and just not people I enjoy spending time with, for the most part). Some have been great (like Winter in Only With A Highlander), but lately they seem to be just..not. Her stories are also getting harder to follow. I’m not sure if her writing style has changed, or maybe I’ve just become more aware – but she has a few, let’s call them habits, which drive me nuts! Rather than letting the reader enjoy a scene that matters to the book, she will jump ahead many hours or even days and then do an info dump to tell us what happened, what was said, etc. – usually when the scene is important to the book and we’d like to see it happen! She also describes dialogue in three ways – her characters “growl” – in the average page of dialogue, there are at least 3-4 times someone “growls” a comment, a response, etc. Even a 2 year old baby is described as growling. The only growling that makes sense in this book is when the cats (who needed much more explanation – they were an important part of the story, but there was no real backstory about them and their gifts)do it. If a character does not growl, they will snort, or drawl.

I realize this is not really a review as much as a…well, not a rant, really, but a long, drawn out complaint. I really don’t look forward to reading her books (and the next one – no reason for it to exist, no reason for this couple to star in a book)…but how do I just give up? I’ve stopped reading series before, but not consciously – I just seem to forget about them! But these books have just become less enjoyable – but I’m afraid if I give up I’ll miss something!

A few comments about this book – as per usual, the hero, Nicholas, is fine – hunky magical time traveler, all good. But the book is all over the place – there are two really disturbing scene at the beginning w/Julia’s dad that are never followed up on (until later when we find out more about dad – after the fact). Younger brother is portrayed as an abusive jerk – until he’s not. Julia is shown to be meek and mild – until w/no experience and for no reason she’s hired to be the resort event planner, even though she wants a job that is much more appropriate for her. There are hints of backstory for both Julia and Nicholas but those are never followed up on either. And when we finally get more information about Nicholas – I read it and went “huh?” because I really had no idea what the author was telling us, and what I did understand came out of left field – did Nicholas know who his father was all along? Do we know why he was abandoned? This book could have been pretty good! Finally, Julia’s issue w/sex made no sense and seemed to disappear pretty quickly (ok, so “help yourself” if you need to – big deal!!).

So…for now I think the break up will happen. If she goes back to writing non magic contemporaries – really, her Logger and Sinclair Brothers books were really, really good (!), I’ll be back (and who knows – I might cave and skim the next one!).

Excellent book. I love Janet Chapman's books, her strong heroes and her spunk heroines. Nicholas and Julia are wonderful. Nicholas spent thirty years as bodyguard to Carolina Oceanus and now that she is to marry Alec he is free to pursue his own path. He has been the director of security for a year and has been thoroughly enjoying the life of a twenty-first century man. Nicholas is a little unusual for one of Janet's heroes. While he is definitely all man, he also has a sensitive side. During his travels through time he has rescued multiple cats who have the run of his home and his life. Now that he is free of his duty to Carolina he is ready to start looking for a wife and has pretty definite ideas of what he wants. He does not expect to be drawn to Julia who seems to be a magnet for trouble as well as being totally uninterested in any kind of relationship. I loved the way that he came to her rescue at the beginning and then tried to keep an eye on her. He also ended up helping her family. He was frustrated by the way she tried everything she could to avoid him. I loved his persistence and the way that he tried to be sensitive to her fears. I also loved the way that he used her thirst for knowledge to expose her to the truth about the magic. He had his own issues regarding his background to deal with and those nearly got him killed.

Julia was an independent Maine woman. She had been married before to a man who used her to get through school then divorced her when he was done with her. He then circulated nasty rumors about her to make it look like the divorce was her fault. She was living with her father, the town drunk, so that she could protect her siblings. All of these things contributed to her self esteem problems. She was very attracted to Nicholas, but ashamed that he had seen her at her worst and convinced that being with him in any way would be a bad thing for them both. She worked very hard to avoid him but Nicholas worked very hard to counter those efforts. The more she saw of him the more she was curious about him. Her curiosity led her to make discoveries that she was unwilling to accept at first but came to believe in. I loved the way that she became intent on being there for him. Except for a couple wild sex scenes, their romance was pretty sweet, with Nicholas determined to hang on until Julia was able to accept his love.

I loved the friendships in this whole series. Julia is able to survive many of her troubles because of the support of her friends Peg (Charmed by His Love) and Olivia (Spellbound Falls). I really loved the way Peg explained Nicholas's viewpoint and attitude to Julia. I also loved the confidence that Olivia had in Julia's abilities even though Julia was sure that she was in no way qualified to do it. Some of my favorite parts involved Nicholas's cats and the way they interacted with both Julia and Nicholas. The ending was a real jaw dropper and now I really can't wait for the next book to come out.

Nicholas, originally an Atlantian but now working as Director of Security in Nova Mare, can face down Roman legions and angry gods but somehow is having trouble keeping safe one stubborn 21st century woman. Julia Campbell doesn't need Nicholas, the most eligible bachelor around, to be her hero not only will she risk all the single women in Spellbound Falls pushing her off the nearest mountain but she has had her heart broken and her reputation ruined once she refuses doing it again...no matter how tempting he is.

What I like about Janet Chapman's books are her characters, they are always so warm and easy to like; Julia was no different, she comes from a troubled background and I loved seeing her bravery and determination to make her own life and her siblings life's better. As for Nicholas...he had me at six and half feet tall, maybe it is because I am quite tall but having a hero that I could potentially climb like a tree is a big YES for me!

If you are after a fast paced and exciting book this probably isn't for you, this more like a slow romantic stroll through a meadow rather than a mad dash through rocky terrain. Although there was a small amount of action, this was mostly about Nicholas and Julia's path to their own happily ever after.

Like all Janet Chapman books Heart of a Hero was charming and heartwarming, full of friendship, love and in this case a herd of extremely cheeky cats! I recommend you give this series a try.

This is the fourth in the Spellbound Falls series by Janet Chapman, and each book is as good as the last. In this book, Nicholas, Princess Carolina's bodyguard from the last book, falls in love with Julia, a maid at the fabulous Nova Mare resort, which sits on the mountain above Spellbound Falls. Nicholas has 6 cats, a gorgeous house that literally hangs off the mountain, and is Nova Mare's head of security, He has also decided it's time to settle down, if he can just find the right woman. Julia is a Spellbound Falls girl, who married her high school sweetheart, moved away to put him through college and then returned home to her drunken father after her husband divorced her, and oh yeah, told the entire TOWN that the reason for the divorce was that Julia was a slut. (SO not true-although most of them seemed to believe him cause guys NEVER lie!) Because of this lie, and some self-esteem problems, Julia has decided she will never marry again.
This is the setup for this book, and it's fun to watch Julia realize that she can't always be in control and Nicholas learn to rely on someone other than himself. If you've read the first books in the series, there are also plenty of appearances by characters we've come to know and love.
I enjoyed this book immensely, although there were a few times I wanted to talk sense into one or the other of the main characters! This is a light, fun read for those who believe in magic of the heart!

Magical! I completely loved this story.

This story is written by Janet Chapman and is about her Maine, time traveling, super tall and strong highlanders/ wizards/gods. What more needs to be said?

I loved it. Nicholas is a very strong charming warrior, who really has a soft side for little girls and cats. When Julia meets up with him, the attraction is blinding, so much that she tries to fight it. They both have things to learn about each other and themselves before their love can proceed past the physical. They of course come to a happy union. I love that Janet includes the characters from her previous books so we can continue to see that their stories are alive and still throwing magical curve balls where needed.

Oh yes, don’t drink the water there in Spellbound Falls, apparently it is full of fertility hormones. That being said, if haven’t read this or the others in the series, you should! Janet makes love and life seem magical and reminds us that everyday life is as magical as that first kiss, and some days it is so much more.

Nicholas, an orphan taken in by a midwife and gardener, is now the head of security for one of the most desirable resorts in the world.

Julia, a 30-year-old divorcee, living at home with her abusive father, is happy to have a job at the resort on top of the mountain, even if it is in housekeeping. With her smarts, she has even found a way to increase her tips.

Once Nicholas saves Julia from an ugly scene with her brother, and a walk home in the snow, he comes to understand her situation and ends up rescuing her rather frequently. Soon, he decides she may just be the perfect wife for him, if she likes his cats.

I borrowed this book from the library and didn't want to give it back. It was such a feel-good, sweet story. I have really enjoyed this series. Chapman has created heroes readers will enjoy. Not only are they portrayed as big, strong, capable, confident males, they are also human. They have good hearts and are able to laugh at themselves and joke with each other. The female leads are ordinary women who choose to become more as part of the package that comes with loving their men. They also come across as sympathetic and caring.

But fate has other plans for her, it throw this hero into her life as she learns what and who this man is.
As in all her books Janet Chapman has captured love, heroes quite well while weaving a magical story where one is totally lost in it.

The last thing Julia Campbell needs is a man with a hero complex, especially one as handsome and imposing as Nicholas. All she has to do is keep it together until her younger sister

Not my favorite in the series.

This was my least favorite story in the series. That is a shame because Nicholas' story had the potential to be epic. Instead the story lacked a lot of that deep dive into the personalities of the characters that this writer is so good at. Normally Ms. Chapman was the kind of writer who developed characters so in depth that were you to meet them on the street you would know them intimately. In this book however that magic is missing. Sorry NOT missing exactly, but diminished somehow. To me the chemistry between Julia and Nicholas just wasn't there not like we find in the other stories in this series. But regardless, any reader who love these novels must read the book to keep up with the rest of our friends in Spellbound Falls.
Now this is my opinion others might enjoy this story immensely.

Pros: Janet Chapman remains very consistent in the quality of her writing throughout this series, so I always know what I'm going to get. She offers a light and ultimately optimistic read that leaves the reader with an upbeat feeling. I actually thought the cats were the best characters in this book.

Cons: I couldn't really connect with the heroine, although I was certainly rooting for her. My main complaint was seeing so many of the same things I've already encountered in other books of the series.

This is the fourth book in the Spellbounds Falls series and they are different than anything I have ever read but I absolutely love them. You have to believe in a Magic, that is what everyone keeps telling Julia Campbell but a small town girl whose husband divorced her after she put him through six years of college, didn’t believe in magic. She just wanted to work her job and do it well so she could get promoted to the Inglenook Resorts and her own place to live. She wanted to get her and her sister out of their drunken father’s home and get her sister into college. This was what she was working so hard for and her work was rewarded but not exactly as she thought. Great book to read and you will not want to put it down.

It is, I guess, a relief to discover that this is the fourth book in a series, because that makes me feel a lot better about all the nearly unparseable exposition crammed in here and there. I gave up trying to follow the backstory, assuming I'd missed several books, and really it didn't matter. What you need to know is that a bunch of historical mythical figures have time traveled and live in modern Maine and run a luxury resort, and they are all falling in love with local women, one book at a time. Enjoy!

I've had Ms. Chapman's books on my bookshelves for a long time but am just getting around to reading them -- my loss as they are always such a great read. They make me smile and want to visit these folks. I wish I had reviewed before she passed because she is surely missed. Loved this story, as I have all the rest of this series.

Fun but forgettable. My favourite character was Solomon (the cat) and it is a pity that he did not play a larger role.

This one is heavily in the genre of romantic fantasy and the action side is there, but it's rather muted.

Strong and Smart

Abused girls learn to be invisible very early in life. Julia was unseen growing up and even after she got married. So when he finished his Master's Degree, he left her and she moved home to take care of Trisha and make sure that she was safe from an abusive father and finished High School. Nova Mare Resort was exclusive and working there paid very, very well. Nicholas, the Head of Security, noticed her and was intrigued. He could storm castles but could be storm Julia? Every girl deserves her Prince Charming. Read on and learn how a strong and smart woman finds a love full of magic and her HEA.

Shocking!!

Very quick moving with a number of twists and turns. I just wish that they had gone more in depth about Nicholas' background.
