A slightly overcomplicated and highly hilarious guide to making a peanut butter sandwich with all your critter friends It’s lunchtime, and all the animals are hungry. In fact, you’re feeling hungry too, and you know exactly what to make―delicious peanut butter sandwiches for everyone! The recipe is surprisingly complicated, but you’re not worried. You gather the critters and a few necessary items (the peanuts and bread, of course, and don’t forget the accordion and wooden clogs!), and then you get started! All the characters in this hilarious how-to have an important role in the making of this lunchtime staple. The raccoon earns the money to pay for the groceries, the crows and the mice gather the ingredients, the donkey and the beaver work hard on the hands-on (or hoofs- and paws-on) preparation, and the skunk … well, the skunk has an essential role to play too! Bold, charming artwork leaves something to discover on every page, and kids will laugh out loud as they puzzle through the many steps necessary to the making of this favorite sandwich.

Whimsical story about a group of animals making peanut butter sandwiches. Who knew that it could be so much work to make a simple sandwich?

“Easy” Steps to Hilarity

How to Make a Peanut Butter Sandwich in 17 Easy Steps by Bambi Edlund is a quirky, funny book that children will love. A number of animals work together to make peanut butter sandwiches with their own methods. The illustrations are adorable. Perhaps my favorite line from the book is a footnote to “Polka until crunchy or smooth, as desired.”

This would be a fun book as a parent or teacher to use as a jumping-off point for so many fun activities. Since peanut butter is relatively easy to make, that would be fun to do after reading this. It could also be a fun lead-in to a brainstorming and creativity exercise. Even a discussion/activity about Rube Goldberg machines could be a follow-up. A writing task breaking down things that children do (or want to do) in their day-to-day life can demonstrate either their competence – look at all these little steps you had to master to learn to do this task! – or help them master a new skill.

My one disappointment with this book is that the fact that the animals are making *peanut* butter sandwiches. With this being a prevalent allergy, this fact could slightly limit what you could do with this book in the classroom or even at home. I do like that it is made explicit that the animals are earning the money that they use to pay for all the ingredients.

I definitely recommend this book. It is silly and fun and might get kids (and you!) thinking in new, creative ways.

I received an ARC from NetGalley, but all opinions are my own.

Who knew that making a simple peanut butter sandwich could be a little more complicated than we thought? How to Make a Peanut Butter Sandwich in 17 Easy Steps is a silly book about a group of animals who work together and each have an important role in making this popular sandwich. This fun story would be a great one to use when introducing "How To Writing" in the Elementary classroom. Although I felt like 17 steps was a little bit excessive, this was a cute and well illustrated story that will be enjoyed by all!

Thank you Owl Kids Books, Bambi Edlund, and NetGalley for the ARC and opportunity to review this book!

Children are, at once, natural simplifiers and complete over-complicaters, so books like this charming title are totally up their alley, as our anthropomorphic cast uses the power of teamwork to make sure that they're all fed and happy.

Bambi Edlund opens her picture book with a list of all the things you'll need to make a peanut butter sandwich, including assorted animals, fruit that may or may not end up in the final product, and a bunch of seemingly unrelated items such as a fallen log and a set of dancing clogs. Seventeen might sound like a lot of steps, but that number provides a strong hook for young readers, who will want to know what could possibly be so complicated about something as simple as making a peanut butter sandwich?

Ms Edlund answers that question with aplomb, satisfying both animal lovers and fans of Rube Goldberg-like machinations. My middle child had great fun reading this book with me, with his favorite part being how the animals were all well-rewarded for their hard work in the end. My eldest child was inspired by our reading to start making his own list of how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, enlisting aforementioned middle child in pretend labors as they exercised both imagination and logic while playing nicely together.

The cartoony illustrations throughout are a delight, with a diverse cast of both the animal crew and the humans they must interact with in their quest for peanut butter sandwiches. Ms Edlund is great at capturing expressions and depicting joy on each page. My kids and I thoroughly enjoyed this quick, fun and surprisingly inspirational read.

Synopsis (from Netgalley, the provider of the book for me to review.)
*********************************************************
This is a slightly overcomplicated and highly hilarious guide to making a peanut butter sandwich with all your critter friends.
It’s lunchtime, and all the animals are hungry. In fact, you’re feeling hungry too, and you know exactly what to make—delicious peanut butter sandwiches for everyone!
Bold, charming artwork leaves something to discover on every page, and kids will laugh out loud as they puzzle through the many steps necessary to the making of this favourite sandwich.

I call my hubby SKIPPY as he loves his PB sandwiches so much … and he is so slow at making them that I wonder what he is doing half the time. Last time I checked there were not any critters in there with him, though. (My dad holds the record for taking 48 minutes to make a sandwich and reheat the soup!) Kids will love this book as it is fun and really off the wall: not that they can take a peanut butter sandwich to school anymore due to the allergy police. (I get it, okay, but I am deathly allergic to ham and it's not like they will outlaw those at lunch!)
Highly recommended. #shortbutsweetreviews

all of their favourite fillings? And when your friends are involved and the sandwich is made with enthusiasm and love, what could taste better? In Bambi Edlund’s How to Make a Peanut Butter Sandwich in 17 Easy Steps, this is indeed the recipe for the most delicious peanut butter sandwich. Part adventure, part creative cookery, and all fun, Edlund’s host of urban creatures come together in their quest to make a peanut butter sandwich.

How do you make a sandwich without opposable thumbs? It turns out that with a lot of coordination and teamwork, it’s a piece of cake! There’s no Little Red Hen in this story and everyone does their share, often in very unusual ways; picture a clog-wearing donkey stomping peanuts. But how does this ragtag bunch pay for all of their flavourful fixings? Not to worry, for these are responsible creatures and the racoon-turned-busker raises the necessary funds with an all-out juggling routine.

All of the steps are indeed numbered, making this a great book for counting. My favourite is Step 17, where everyone gets to enjoy the fruits of their labour, whether they be handed, pawed, winged or hoofed. If you’re looking for an entertaining story that will also teach your youngster about sequencing, cooperation, and sharing, then you’ll go bananas for this book.

Picture this: you’re starving. What better fix than a peanut butter sandwich? That’s when How to Make a Peanut Butter Sandwich in 17 Easy Steps arrives, accordion in hand, turning your snack craving into a woodland adventure.

This isn’t your typical how-to guide. It’s a laugh-out-loud, over-the-top journey featuring a donkey in clogs stomping peanuts, an accordion-playing raccoon, and synchronized squirrels spreading peanut butter with a knife carved by a beaver. And, of course, there’s a skunk adding its own flair.

For kids aged 4-7, including four of my grandkids, this book is perfect for giggles. The steps are hilariously absurd, and the story emphasizes teamwork and accepting differences. Each animal plays an important role, showing kids that everyone’s unique contributions matter.

If you’re ready to embrace the silliness, this book delivers laughs and a fun message. Just grab the print version—and maybe a real peanut butter sandwich, because you’ll definitely be craving one.

This is a very cute story about making a peanut butter sandwich for all your woodland friends. The things you need is very funny for adults. Kids might not think it is as funny. The crows and raccoons have to go to the market. The raccoon has to learn to juggle. The crows, mice and squirrels divide the money the raccoon earned juggling. The crow takes the money to settle up with the farmer. Then the skunk along with the mice and otter go to the bakery to get bread. The baker was not happy with the skunk. They pay before leaving. Then the skunk and squirrels go to the nut shop. The raccoon shells the peanuts. The donkey puts on clogs and crushes the peanuts. The beaver whittles the log into a knife. Then he scrapes the peanut butter into a jar. The crows peel the bananas. The badger slices them into rounds. Then it's a team effort to spread the peanut butter on the bread and add the banana slices. Sandwiches are put together and loaded onto a skateboard. Everyone meets up at the park for a wonderful picnic. Teamwork.
Cute illustrations.

An odd little curiosity, this takes the narrative of making a peanut butter sandwich and put its into the most oddball and bonkers storyline, involving raids on stores by animals – once you've juggled your way to earning enough from passers-by, that is – and waited for the beaver to whittle a knife from a freshly-fallen tree. I think the virtue of this is that it's fun, and clearly something you can engage with as regards imitating – trying to come up with the absurdest route to an omelette, or 'fifty animals needed to microwave popcorn', but the obvious flipside of all that is that this might not have enough to differentiate it from your own creations. Yes, the illustrations are lively and characterful enough, but beyond that the simplicity of the text doesn't cry out 'this is a special book!' to me. Instead its simple pleasures and easy joy do approach four stars, but not with much urgency.

What a hilarious “how to” for a wide variety of ages!

How do crows, clogs, a log, a beaver, 4 mice and a long list of other odds and ends and animals equal a peanut butter sandwich? This wonderful picture book begins with a full page spread of all the needed items allowing for plenty of prediction time with listeners in a classroom setting and then launches into a ludicrous and detailed instruction manual for preparing a sandwich and enjoying them in a woodland picnic. The illustrations are wonderful and so detailed that text is not required to understand the steps.

Excellent launching for writing a how-to passage with plenty of opportunities for discussing what would happen if a step is left out…amid the laughter, that is!

A hilarious books for hungry people who love animals! In this book everyone is hungry, even the creatures sent off to help get the ingredients to make a peanut butter sandwich. This is not Edlund's first picture book, but it is the first that caught my attention. I'll need to visit the others because I love her easy style of illustration - not that it's easy, but rather comfortable perhaps, utilizing a soft palette. Each two-page spread shows another step in the sandwich production with all animals involved. And everyone gets to enjoy the fruits of the labor at the end. One thing to note, on the last spread there is a never-before-seen cow and a pail of milk providing drinks for the group. I feel there's another story there.

This is such a cute book! All the animals play an important part in making a peanut butter sandwich in 17 steps. Each set of animals has a specific task that they perform in order to get the sandwich done. This book is great for teaching kids about working together to accomplish a task. The illustrations are top-notch and an integral part of the story, making it easy for early readers to follow along.

I will be picking up a copy for my Little Free Library when this book publishes.

Thank you so much to the publisher OwlKids Books and NetGalley for an e-galley of this book in exchange for my review.

Definitely didn't realize that making a peanut butter sandwich could be so complicated! "How to Make a Peanut Butter Sandwich in 17 Easy Steps" is a fun and silly book that turns making a peanut butter sandwich into just a few steps into a long and drawn-out process. All that matters is that they are all having fun and working together to get the job done! I can definitely see teachers using this book in the classroom during "How-To" writing lessons... May be a bit over complicated, but very cute and very well illustrated. I will definitely be sharing this book!

This book outlines the Rube Goldberg process for creating a peanut butter sandwich - including a unique method for making the peanut butter! It is a fun, crazy book about creating peanut butter (and banana) sandwiches. And if you are allergic to peanuts, don't worry because the author does provide an almond alternate at the beginning.

There are lots of animals - very talented animals - helping with this complicated process. My favorite is, of course, the cow.

I think you could read this one out loud to a group of kids anywhere in the K-3rd grade range and they would enjoy the craziness of it.

How To Make A Peanut Butter Sandwich in 17 Easy Steps by Bambi Edlund had me giggling at the ingredients list! Kids will laugh out loud while reading this story that is told in steps. The lively, bright illustrations are essential to the story, and kids will easily follow along!

This story would be great for teaching children how it takes a lot of friends working together to build communities. It would also be great for teaching steps in a process and cause and effect relationships.

What a fun story!!
We were instantly drawn in by the title- 17 steps??? How hard IS it to make a peanut butter sandwich? And then the first page, "You Will Need" items, got us laughing right away & set the scene for hilarious shenanigans!
Kids will love all the cute little critters (an otter on a skateboard!?), and the illustrations are bright & colourful.

Perfect read-aloud for kids- and I can see a lot of great activity ideas for this story.

Note: I also liked how the animals didn't steal the food- but left coins to "settle up"!

Reading this book to over 13 classes (grades K-2) in one week was a very interesting experience. The confusion it caused among the kids from beginning to end was both funny and somewhat disappointing for many of them. One of the enjoyable parts of my job is explaining words to kids, and having the opportunity to explain "polka" and "badgers" in the same story was particularly fun for me. While I would have chosen a few different words in the book that might be more understandable for all kids, it was still somewhat enjoyable to read.

I received an electronic ARC from Owlkids Books through NetGalley.
Edlund offers clear instructions on how to construct a peanut butter sandwich in only seventeen steps. I appreciate that they lay out what is needed at the start of the book and list specific instructions for each step. Young readers will be laughing by page two and continue to appreciate the fun throughout. This is a delightful book to teach sequencing and thinking through a process.

Wow! Turns out I've been doing it wrong all these years . . .

It seems that to make a proper peanut butter sandwich you need a bunch of forest friends to go to the store for you, and a donkey wearing red clogs to stomp on the peanuts, and a beaver to nibble you a knife. And, more.

This is probably the cutest cookbook I've come across.

And now I really want to share a sandwich with a badger.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Owlkids for sending me to sandwich school.

This cute and fun story is sure to be a hit with young readers! How can you go wrong when one of the main characters is a raccoon?! I also like that while the book is silly, there is also the ideas of paying for things and following a set of steps which are good lessons and things that I could see using as part of a lesson in my grade 1 classroom. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for giving me a chance to read and review this book, I would definitely recommend it!

3.5 stars, rounded to 4 so I will know to read it another year. I read this to both 3K/4K classes and they loved the absurdity of it. ("Why can't they just BUY the peanut butter?!") Illustrations went well with the text. I adapted some of the text just to simplify it a little ("dons the clogs" "Challenge the beaver"). I felt that there was enough going on; stopping to define several words would have ruined the flow, at least the first time through.

My seven year old and myself were laughing non stop throughout reading this book, and it's been on high debate in the book rotation for nightly reads. We were also able to use this book and work on how to actually make a PB sandwich along with other of her favorite foods. This book is a fun light hearted read, that brings laughter to the whole family while you are reading together.
