Dear adventurer, It is our belief that this is one of the most important texts you will read should you plan to adventure in Gwelf. Once more our dear Wilburton sets off on adventure in Gwelf, but this time he ventures into the North into the territory of the Ravens. As adventures often do, this voyage strays from it's original path and this book details our hero's survival. Wilburton embarks on research, off-road trekking through the Farm- and Scrublands, and hails at Border Fort XI where he first sets paw outside Sparrowkind's territory. Research is all well-and-good, dear adventurer, it is in experience that true wisdom lies. Wilburton, ccompanied by a guide, a scout, a medic, and an exorcist encouters the wilds of the North and it's inhabitants, the Rats and Ravens of the Boreals. If you plan to voyage beyond the Border Forts, we beseech you to scour this text for within it may lie the key to your own survival...
I’ve been having trouble getting into fiction lately but I fell right into this one. The first book is excellent and I like this even better, I think because of all the spooky unknowns. It’s a great adventure in a unique world. I love the magic system, the characters, and especially the amazing illustrations. I’m dying to read more and the ending hints that maybe I will eventually get to (???) I hope so!
Larry MacDougall’s second Gwelf book delivers more excellent art and intriguing storytelling, expanding the scope of his created world as Wilburton Fox, and several brave companions, head north on an expedition to investigate the Hinterlands – realm of Ravenkind.
Text and images share equal space and importance within this tale, providing the reader with many details of characters, animals, places, events and dangers that build an understanding of the ongoing conflict between the Region of Gwelf and those inhabiting the Great Northern Territory.
The writing and artistic quality is highly impressive, with something attractive and/or insightful on almost every page. I love the earthy style and colouring of MacDougall’s drawing/painting technique, and the texture achieved by his approach perfectly fits the nature of the narrative, often adding a touch of mystery or peril to the landscapes and scenes of engagement, and giving a soul to the individuals we meet throughout the journey.
I loved it. This book builds off the first book in all the best ways, but it could also be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone. If you've read book one first, you will appreciate this story more as the author continues the world-building. The artwork is incredible. It just makes the world come alive. I also loved how the author introduced us to the characters as they assembled the adventuring party. The build-up to and action in the book's later half was exceptionally well done. I found myself holding my breath at one point.
I look forward to the next book in the series when it is released.
Loved this fun, dark and enthralling adventure. More adventure narrative than guidebook. Hinterlands is even better than the original Guide. Really hope this becomes a series. The art is so beautiful. I'm ready to grab a pack and head out with Wilburton.
Here we venture into the dangerous Raven territory be you one Gwelf. This book is just a lovely as the survival guide, and further makes me want to visit Gwelf - but maybe not the hinterlands. There is a reason Sparrowkind don’t go there.
Another enchanting journey into the land of Gwelf. Still surprised no studio has picked up film rights for this and the first book, it could be a great movie.
