In the grim dawn of 1930, Hazel Tauers has spent her entire existence abandoned, ostracized, and confined in Lithena orphanage. She devises a plan to escape the village of Boars Rest and every memory that has stained her. Just as she is to flee a man arrives to adopt her, the first and only person to inquire. She has no choice but to accompany him soon before her sixteenth birthday, forcing her to live with decisions that are still not hers.

She always desired to have a family, but her future is permanently altered when she arrives at the nefarious Gfellar farm. As she meets Jonah, her new father and widowed apiarist, she immediately realizes something is horrifically wrong. As Hazel becomes gravely ill, Jonah becomes increasingly suspicious of her plans to flee, but there is something darker, and more sinister about his ambitions.

Hazel begins to unravel the dreadful secrets of her new father and his past, but as danger escalates, she fears not only for her own life but the lives at Lithena Orphanage. Can Hazel escape with her life intact in a place where horror is no longer night bound and no one is whom they seem?

Kaitlyn “K.J.” Tiller is a southern Ohio writer and artist. She was born in the heart of the Ohio Valley and served in the United States Army until she was twenty-one. In 2022, she released her novel The Bed of Eels, a speculative horror story about a girl and her curious photograph that holds the key to her past.

While living in Puerto Rico, much of her undergraduate research specialized in historical and parapsychological storytelling. She received her BFA in Creative Writing from Full Sail University in July 2022.

As an avid reader, she finds speculative fiction, slow-burn horror, macabre gothic lit, and transportive historical fiction is what she's drawn to. She has a growing community on her YouTube channel where she makes videos mainly about books, a little about movies, and the occasional historical garment.

K.J is amazing, I have always loved a good ghost story and this one kept me intrigued and on my toes needing to know what happens next, even while fighting a raging sinus infection. I got many laughs and a few heart palpitations! Can’t wait to see what KJ comes out with next!

While not a genre I normally read, the synopsis intrigued me. This story pulled me in from the beginning. The shocking twists kept me going to the end.

I might be slightly biased, but I love my haunted, macabre little book about ghosts and cults. 🖤
