The Wind-Up Bird Chronical was the first book by Haruki Murakami that I read, and I discovered it while searching for winners of literary awards. His style is sparse and immediate, almost like a Japanese Hemmingway. The plot requires one to soar along with Mr. Murakami's imagination, but it's really fun to keep up. Mysterious, mundane, and deeply original, this book is a beauty.

A Wild Sheep Chase: A Novel is the second book I've read by Haruki Murakami, and I'm sure that I'll read more of his work. There is a mystery going on here, but things get pretty surreal as the novel progresses. I love this author's writing, so I think I'll just go order up another.

Start with The Wild Sheep Chase with Murakami, and then move on to The Wind-up Bird Chronicles. That way, you can see if you like his style or not before you make an enormous commitment. His sentence style and word arrangement are so carefully crafted that you will want to stop and savor what you just read many times though out the book. His genre could be described as magical realism, although it is not hokey like some fantasy or mag. real. novels seem to be.
