My life was nothing but darkness and pain until he stepped out of the shadows to save me.

Bowie

For years, I’ve struggled just to survive. Life is rough, but I keep on fighting, desperately grasping to a sliver of hope that someday, somehow things will get better.

Between dodging the bad guys in the neighborhood and avoiding my uncle’s wrath, I do my best to avoid being seen. When things go from bad to worse, a dark angel appears, rescuing me from certain death. His name is Syn, and he sees me in ways no one else ever has.

He’s a dangerous man, but somehow I know he won’t hurt me. When I find out that vampires exist, and even wilder than that, Syn believes I’m his fated mate, I’m offered a life I never could have imagined. If I accept his gift, he’ll be mine for good — my eternal Syn — and I can leave my old life behind for good.

It’s a tempting idea. After all, only a vampire can truly love you forever.

Eternal Syn is book one in the Immortal Assassins series, a contemporary setting, MM romance featuring vampire assassins finding love with their fated mates. Book one contains a possessive vampire who didn’t know he was capable of love, a sexual awakening, a wounded mortal just trying to survive, a lot of bad guys who get what they deserve, plenty of heat, and vampires being vampires. It’s a hurt/comfort, morally gray, vicious vampire on the outside/marshmallow on the inside love fest you don’t want to miss.

In this book we are presented at Syn, who is an immortal vampire. One night while doing a job Syn find a young man we can't just stop thinking about... Of course we have the old "I will stalk you until you're mine" bit. The book felt a little shallow, I personally didn't feel the love or the fated mates chemistry, not even a little.
It's a good book if you don't have nothing better to read in your tbr.

Giving up at 35%. I've tried 3 times to read this, I got further this time than last, but something about it isn't holding my attention. Plus, the guys talk like frat boys. I don't know...hundreds of years old vampires might have a little more couth. Just saying.

Moving on...

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes & tags down below.

It’s been twelve years of struggling, of barely making it, and I’m fucking tired.

My first book by Mia Monroe, and I would gladly read more. I really really enjoyed the writing, and the story is really freaking entertaining. It was also sweet, a little sad, and hot as hell. There’s vampires, assassins, a tragic backstory, fated mates, and heat. What more could a lady want, really?

“I’m tempted to call you perfect, but I fear you would reject the sentiment. […]

I have a lengthy TBR (where books go to die), as well as several ARCs I should be reading. However, I am also a mood reader, so when I came across the blurb for this one, I immediately ditched all of my reading plans, lol. No regrets, though. I really enjoyed this! Also, Bowie is the best MC name, possibly ever. A beautiful man named Bowie with shoulder length wavy brown hair, who also has a bit of an anger issue? Sign me right up.

Bowie burrows his face into my chest like a wounded child in need of comfort, […]

I might actually go crazy and read more from the series. Probably out of order, lol. I wanna see everyone (especially Yves) find their mates.

There are many reasons I didn't care for this book, but the worst one had me stop reading it entirely.

This story concerns a band of vampire "brothers" who for some reason have formed a vigilante justice group and are assassins for hire if they feel the request fits in with their group's "mission statement". (Interesting concept, vampires having a sense of "morals" regarding what behavior deserves death and what does not.) The "brothers" have gathered to hang out between jobs and start engaging in talking vampire smack to each other, part of which follows:

In the common area, Thorn and Midnight are doing shots of hard liquor, which makes me snort considering the amount of alcohol it takes for us to even feel buzzed would kill a mortal.

“I assume one of you lost a bet?” I ask, walking up behind them.

Thorn nods, his brow creased as he swipes his mouth with his forearm. “Midnight thinks I’m losing my edge.”

Eros, sitting quietly in an armchair with a book of poetry, rolls his eyes. “They’ve been doing this for over an hour.”

“A complete waste of good alcohol,” Raphael says. “You can’t appreciate it the way you’re gulping it down.”

Thorn mocks our brother, mouthing his words as he pulls a joint out of his jacket pocket—another habit that has little effect on vampires. “You have fun your way. I’ll have fun my way,” Thorn says, lighting it.

“At least he’s past his heroin stage,” I add with a smirk.

Midnight snorts a laugh as he slams his empty shot glass down. “Could’ve killed an elephant with the amount he was taking.”

Thorn drags his hand through his light brown hair. “Why should mortals have all the fun?”

“Are they having fun?” Eros asks. “I doubt addiction is a great time.”

“Yes, but it started out as fun,” Thorn says. “And it remains fun if you’re a vampire.”

So, the author has some of her characters referring to past heroin usage in a humorous way, as well as indicating that continuing that usage would be "fun".

I can't even begin to express how wrong-headed, how offensive, how insanely disgusting this sentiment is, even if it pertains to mythical creatures. Heroin destroys. Heroin kills. Heroin tears families apart and leaves dead bodies laying in gutters. Heroin is never, ever, ever "fun" or "humorous". This dialogue literally made me sick.

It doesn't matter how good, bad or indifferent I would have been towards this book otherwise. Nobody should be writing trash like this and nobody should be reading it.

Cannot possibly recommend under any conditions because the author attempts to treat dependency upon lethal recreational drugs as a source for "humor". If this person has an editor, they need to do a better job directing the author on what passes for human decency and what doesn't. Or maybe a future book will make lighthearted reference to something like, oh, say, rape?

A new author for me, I enjoyed the story and the writing style and the dual POVS, my only dislike is I found it be very sickly sweet, until my teeth hurt LOL.

I will continue as I want to get to know the rest of the vampire brothers.

You know sometimes you want a vampire story with a whole load of biting, smut, possessiveness and a loose rags-to-riches story about a homeless sweetheart and a billionaire vampire assassin? That was this book.

Was the it the greatest book ever written? Absolutely not. Did I fall in love with sweet but unfortunate Bowie and savage killer Syn? 100%. Could I read Mia Monroe writing about sexy vampires biting their mates and getting down and dirty with a whole lotta killing? Hell yes, and luckily for me, there’s 5 more books 😹

So for a quick smutty read with hot vampires, mating bites and a whole lotta Mafia assholes getting shot, give this one a go!

Read Eternal Syn for:
✨ Vampire x human
✨ So much biting
✨ Possessive and protective MC
✨ Family of gay vampire assassins (because ofc)
✨ Homeless x billionaire
✨ Hurt/comfort
✨ Fated Mates

2.5 stars- Underwhelming. I love the fated mates trope & found family trope ( each book focuses on a different member of the “family”) but I feel a bit meh about this book. I didn’t feel connected to the characters, plot, or the main relationship that the book focused on. I felt like the dialogue from Syn was repetitive and didn’t work for me. I have liked some of Mia Monroe’s other books but this one was just ok for me.

I'm such a sucker for this type of vampire romance. I just love a broody, unapologetically viscous vamp. One who's completely devoted to their mate and would essentially burn down the world if anyone hurt them. This is a bit, shall we say darker than we usually see from Monroe. Not romance wise. The romance is still very sweet, with that growly possessiveness I can't get enough of. I'm more talking about the gore factor, as in tearing out peoples throats. This is not me complaining, I love this shit. I just wanted readers to be aware.

"I want you, desperately. I want to worship your flesh and drown in your essence."

I adored Syn. I loved Bowie too, but Syn with his flowery words was just so swoon-worthy. And the steam! Sweet Bowie may start off innocent, but he sure doesn't end that way! And all the biting? Y-E-S! It was also great how all the vampires in the coven welcomed Bowie into Syn's life, most with enthusiasm. They were so happy for their friend. I can't wait for the rest of them to get their HEAs, especially Yves. However, I have a feeling Miss Monroe will be saving him for last.

What a disappointment this book was. I was looking forward to a fated mate romance for a while as I seem to have read through quite a few of them and what I haven't read doesn't seem to be my cup of tea. then this book came on my radar and I thought it would be good. My mistake. Though I understand that insta love is very much a part of fated mate stories and can appreciate it most times this one just made me cringe. I mean there was minimal to no chemistry between the 2 MC's. And Bowie had the requisite traumatic backstory and it seemed like there was almost no plot. Sometimes the romance taks over the plot and it can be good but not here. And do not get me started on all of these vampires enjoying the heck out of killing. I just did not enjoy this book.

Eternal Syn is the first book in Mia Monroe's Immortal Assassins series. Here's what you can expect from Syn and Bowie:

🖤 MM paranormal romance in a contemporary setting
🖤 First person dual point of view
🖤 Guaranteed happily ever after
🖤 Vampire x human
🖤 Possessive main character
🖤 Sexual awakening
🖤 Hurt/comfort
🖤 Morally gray
🖤 Low relationship angst
🖤 Fated mates
🖤 Found family

As always, ensure you review the content and trigger warnings to decide if this book is right for you. Note that this list of warnings may be incomplete. Please take care of yourself while reading.

He's beautiful in a way most people aren't. As if it comes from some otherworldly source. I want to card my fingers through his silky hair, feel the softness of his skin on my fingertips, taste his Cupid's bow lips. I want to see what he looks like splayed out on my bed beneath me, whimpering my name as I take him apart piece by piece. I want to fucking own him.

This is a fun series! I've read Mia Monroe's joint work with K.M. Neuhold as part of the Drake Security series, but her solo stuff has been entertaining, too. The concept of vampires hiding in plain sight as assassins is the perfect setting for the book. I think Mia's done a great job with the world building. As with most paranormal romance, the concepts governing their universe are up to them, but it's always good to learn them at appropriate and logical times so the events of the books make sense.

The issue I've had with the entire series is that some of it feels rushed. Yes, a lot of the content is over-the-top (hello, they're vampires who are also assassins) and I'm okay with that. I know what I signed up for. I just feel like the books are almost a little chaotic and cluttered. However, it's not enough to detract me from reading and I've gone through the entire series (this was a re-read for me so I could finish up the remainder of the series). If you're going to read these books, you'll have to be okay with the insta-love, which is usually the case in these fated mate situations. I try to remind myself that when it seems like the characters don't know one another all that well.

Overall, this was a fun read! I love that the prologue details how Syn became a vampire and how he met Yves and the rest of his brothers. I think that aspect of the story and world-building is really neat. The spice in this book was great, because if there's one thing (other than drinking blood) vampires do well, it's intimacy and heat. This is a great start to the series, and with every brother being a little bit different, it's guaranteed to be a fun time!
"You are an angel, Bowie," Syn whispers, kissing my neck. "An angel in my world of evil. A wonder sent to light the darkness of my soul. Oh, my darling, I am your eternal servant. What a gift."

Absolutely fantastic start to a really exciting new series

There are so many awesome things about this book; I know I shouldn’t be surprised given Mia’s the author but I was truly blown away. The premise itself is such a cool idea. What better way to satisfy your need for blood and violence than to take out the scum of the earth and get paid for it?! I’m also really enjoying that there is the acknowledgement that as vampires they like violence, blood and gore. They enjoy the kills they make. There’s no moral grandstanding and no meaningless justifications; they enjoy what they do and what they do, in the most basic sense, balances the scales of good and evil. The interaction between Syn and his found family was perfection. They truly are brothers in that they love each other, tease each other, are exasperated with each other and no matter what will stand by each other. It was sweet and provided a softer, gentler side to each of them. It balanced them really well as characters and made them more loveable. Plus, we’ve got awesome, strong, supportive and kind female secondary characters which is always really great to see. Bowie and Syn, they were the ideal combination of reticent and head over heals in love. As much as I love insta-love, I have a true soft-spot for fated mates scenarios where the MCs don’t fall straight away. They may fall incredibly quickly, but there’s a build to it. The fact that Syn felt an immediate connection but needed time to understand it made the love he felt more believable. He was willing to give himself some room to see where the sudden connection was going (with some gentle stalking hehe) but he wasn’t 100% all in straight away which meant that when he truly fell it was not solely because of fate but also because he’s learnt who Bowie was. Similarly, I loved that Bowie was open to the connection but also understandably cautious. Trauma doesn’t just go away and while he could consciously work on trusting and believing in their connection, it was a choice to do so and to fight against the little voice warning him people couldn’t be trusted, not a compulsion. Needless to say, I clearly loved these guys. Their relationship was sweet and gentle whilst also being hot AF. Whilst I adored them I have to admit that I may already have some favourites and though I really do adore Bow and Syn I have to admit, I think they might be Thorn and Midnight. Midnight just seems like that perfect mix of vulnerable and stoic. He makes me want to hug him haha. Thorn, sigh, Thorn is just awesome. He’s hilarious and irreverent and just the right amount of unhinged. I feel like his book is going to be wild! I think though that all the guys are going to end up being favourites in their own way which is what a great series does. So, if you haven’t already guessed I am incredibly excited about this new series and cannot wait to see what comes next. (Also, sorry this is so long but this is probably why I shouldn’t write reviews straight after finishing the book because I end up happy ranting about how awesome it is).

3⭐️ average vampire romance. The first half was better, intriguing and a bit dark. I did like the assassin element and the relationship between the vampire brothers. But the second half felt very rushed and became cheesy. I wish Bowie had stayed human longer after he found out about vampires. It made no sense that he jumped into it so fast. Felt like the author was rushing to fit in all the cliche vampire stuff.

DNF around 35%. Really just boring with no plot and one-dimensional characters. The dialogue is wooden and there’s no real conflict or development. If you're looking to fantasize about a stalker saving you from poverty because you're so pretty, but it's fine because he's super rich, then it's for you. Otherwise...

Morally grey main character? Check. Vampires? Check. Paranormal romance? Check. Fated mates? Check. Grumpy/Sunshine? Check. Devoted (healthily possessive) mate? Check. There it is. That's it folks. This one checks all my boxes.

To say that Bowie's had a rough go of it is a complete understatement. But there's something about him that attracts Syn like a moth to the flame. Syn views Bowie as more than someone who's lived a hard life. He views him as someone who deserves to be cherished, protected, and loved. And that's exactly what he sets out to do.

I love the premise of this series. New Onyx is a city rife with injustice, cruelty, and corruption. And Syn and his brothers set out to right some of those wrongs, taking out some of society's trash so to speak. For a price of course. But it's a price well paid when the result is, well, a safer society for people to live in. And honestly, I love this brand of vigilante justice. It brings me immense joy.

I also loved the relationship Syn has with his brothers, and the history they share. I love the family they've formed, and the bonds they've forged together. I love how clear it is that they would do anything and everything for each other. They respect each other, they love each other, and they trust each other. And I'm honestly really looking forward to meeting the rest of the family in more depth as the series goes on.

But onto our main couple - I loved the development of their relationship. I loved how Syn respected Bowie's boundaries, but ensured that Bowie felt safe and protected - something Bowie hadn't had in a very long time. And we all know how important open and honest communication is to me in my romance, and this book had it in spades (of course, with the whole vampire reveal coming when it needed to, because that can be a bit of a mindfuck at the best of times).

But I also loved how easily Bowie was accepted into the family - into the coven of vampires.

This book had some intense moments, and some deliciously dark elements. But it also had a lot of tenderness, sweetness, and comfort. It was a delicate balance between the intensity of the plot, and the gentleness of the developing relationship between Bowie and Syn.

This is the kind of writing I've grown to love and adore from Mia Monroe, and I honestly can't wait to dive deeper and deeper into this series, as each brother of the coven finds their fated mate.

So I enjoyed this for the most part. It had a lot in common with Mia’s series Hot Head, which she wrote with K.M. Neuhold. It is also about a group of brothers, who are dragon shifters instead of vampires. They also discover that they have fated mates, which they thought was a myth. And one by one they fall in love. Saving the brother who is “leader” for last, even though he is the one who dreamed of love the most.

It also reminded me of Lark Taylor’s Devil's Mark series. Which is about a group of demon brothers who also have fated mates and find love one by one. The similarity is more in the violence and bloodlust of the brothers, and the stalker tendencies.

But this felt like those other series were boiled down to their most basic parts and cliches. It’s low low angst. The angst is non existent. And the dialogue is so corny. I honestly don’t mind it so much when Syn is telling Bowie he is the light of his life etc. But it was painful when it was the brothers talking amongst themselves saying things like, “Isn’t it great being a good guy? Good thing we only kill bad guys.” 🤣 The dialogue is almost painfully bad.

But I love the fated mates trope! And I love Syn’s devotion! I wish there was maybe a tad bit of angst and if Bowie had taken a bit more convincing. The same night he finds out that Vampires are real he agrees to be turned. It was all too easy. But I will continue the series and hope it gets better, because I feel like a lot of series like this get better as you continue to get more attached to the family.

And I definitely recommend those other two series I mentioned to anyone who enjoyed this, or even if you didn’t but you liked the idea. Those other series take this idea and make it better!

Immortal Assassins is a great new series from Mia Monroe! We have a darker family of new characters to get to know, a hurt/comfort fated mates romance to enjoy, and vampires with a strong sense of right and wrong helping to rid the world of the dregs of society. For a fee, of course. I love the idea of a found family of vampires who have become assassins that take out those that have evaded the law or beaten the system. They even have a code of ethics, no children or women, unless proven otherwise.
Syn has been happy in this life since the 1400's but for he first time, a mortal catches and holds his attention. He needs to watch over and protect the young man, especially with how sad he looks and the situation he is in. Bowie has had it hard for several years with huge trauma in his teens and things only going downhill from there. Syn brings light, protection and a caring nature that Bowie is in desperate need of and Syn didn't even know he had. The two together make for a sweet but equally crazy hot couple, especially once Syn reveals his true nature to Bowie.
It's not a story or romance for the faint of heart. The vampire's let their true nature out as they take out those they are hired to kill, as well as the occasional idiot who thinks their hard enough to steal from or take on one of them. Syn and Bowie also go a little bit harder and bloodier once they make things official. Bowie's history is heartbreaking and it's amazing how he has managed to carry on and stay out of trouble, especially with everything his good for nothing uncle has going on. Syn is the one that comes along and saves him, a little bit like a Disney prince taking out the bad guys as they ride off into the sunset, but this time it's into the extravagant high rise with the family of vampires as they live their HEA.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Eternal Syn is the first book in Mia Monroe’s new Immortal Assassins series. The story takes a darker tale of vampire assassins cleaning up a city filled with organized crime, drug dealers, and other criminals and combines it with a sugary fated mates relationship. It is an interesting juxtaposition and I think it works overall. Obviously, you need to be OK with the sort of vigilante justice side of things here (though, to be clear, the guys are getting paid for their work as hired guns). We get some grisly scenes of them attacking their targets, but Monroe makes sure we know exactly how bad these bad guys really are in the process. I could buy Bowie’s easy acceptance of the situation, as he has been through enough to be hardened and accepting that the world isn’t always black and white or a pretty place.

Vampire assassin falls for twink in trouble.

This is a hard one. I didn’t totally love the book. I wanted to! It just wasn’t totally it for me. The relationship was a little too easy and a little too fast - and I read a lot of fated mates and omegaverse, so when I say a relationship is too fast, it’s like hella fast.

The concept is intriguing and I’m definitely going to give the series another shot and read the next book, but this one wasn’t quite living up to my expectations. The spice was spicy and the supporting characters were intriguing and I can’t wait to see how their stories play out but I just didn’t connect to Syn the way I usually do to MCs (especially morally-grey ones).

That being said, this audiobook is amazing. I purchased it through the Hoof & Fang podcast with Kirt Graves as the narrator and let me tell you it was worth every penny. 10 stars.

Yes, I’m a bit biased. I’m a huge Kirt Graves fan and would listen to him read me a shopping list. He did amazing with this novel and did a wonderful job bringing all the characters to life. Zero complaints about the audio and the narration and I’ll absolutely be buying more audiobooks through H&F.

Solid 4.75 stars. I go back and forth on my love of vampires. Sometimes I love them and sometimes I’m just not interested in their OTT emo centuries of whatever drama.

This story was different. I loved the hurt/comfort and caretaking. Syn wrapped Bowie in literal and figurative blankets and healed his mind, body, and soul. And then once Bowie accepted Syn’s gift they just turned into vampire fuck bunnies but that was just hot too.

And Bowie heals Syn in a way too. He’s Syn’s fated mate which Syn neither believed in nor thought he needed. He gives Syn’s eternal life new purpose.

Will definitely reread this and read the rest of the series. My .25 star deduction was just for some editing thingies.

This is an underdeveloped story, with an interesting POV where vampires are bloodthirsty monsters with morals. While the story is okay it is very simplistic in its written style with an underdeveloped worldview and undeveloped characters Absolutely no angst here - just death, mayhem, and revenge. Also, no heavy thinking is required to follow the storyline I am saving you - okay; I am a vampire - okay; I am your fated mate - okay: I kill bad guys - okay; and so on. Sigh - pretty sure that I will not be reading #2 unless I do so by accident or desperation.

There's nothing really new about any part of this book and the writing wasn't on the level of my favorite authors, and yet I could not stop reading. The romance is low angst and, honestly, so sugary sweet it gave me a toothache. We have past trauma, a sort of hurt/comfort vibe, fated mates, found family, vampire assassins unaliving bad guys, a colourful cast of side characters that basically tell you who the following books in the series will be about,... Again, nothing really new and not written in any spectacular mind-blowing way, but I still couldn't stop reading. So naturally, I will read the rest of the series as well.

“How do you do it, Yves? How does your heart remain so open and loving when you’ve had such a deep loss?”

2.75 stars. I guess I am in the minority here, but I didn’t think the book was that well written. I like the two main characters, but they lacked depth. I also didn’t feel their chemistry and were too one dimensional.

I thought the book was a decent read. But my to be read pile is too large to continue reading a series was just okay for me.

If you want paranormal, M M, and chemistry, I would suggest reading the Beacon Hill series by SJ Himes.
