CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

Review for complete series

The winner receives a reward. The loser receives punishment.

Blood C is utterly frustrating, I've gone through all sorts of stages of disliking it until it eventually wormed its way to being one of my all-time favourites.

Being the CLAMP fan that I am, I became curious when I saw their name on the cover of this to me then unfamiliar manga series. I had not read any of the previous Blood instalments and it was a small wonder as I rarely venture to read horror or gore manga. As I was still struggling to decide whether I should give it a try or not, a friend handed me her Blood C DVDs to help me make up my mind. It should be said that the manga is an adaptation of the anime and more or less one on one the same thing with the exception of the anime having more slaughter filler scenes which, honestly, I can do without anyway.

So, there I was, watching the anime - and I very rarely watch anime, so that alone was something. The main character Saya was frustrating and tedious in equal measure. She was your standard ditzy and clumsy school girl; the annoying type of a goody-two-shoes. She would be oblivious to people's behaviour, blunder around and sing songs about doing the laundry - goodness, her songs were grating. Then, at night, she'd turn into this super-human fighter slaughtering monsters. I had no idea what to make of her, but she still annoyed the hell out of me.

What I didn't bet on was the entire plot to take 360° turn . Ok, the plot is getting more interesting, perhaps there's some point to it after all. Just as I started to warm up to Saya as a character and the ridiculous plot, it ends. Not only is nothing resolved, but it just leaves you hanging in the middle of a what-the-hell scene when the credits roll .

I was angry - I brooded over the story for days. It couldn't have been the end, it was just too frustrating. Especially given that it was just getting interesting. A week later, I was still angry. I had to confess to myself, I must have liked it if I kept mulling it over. And then the movie sequel was announced - mercy at last, I wouldn't have to think the plot over anymore as there would finally be some answers - right?

The movie has Saya out for revenge - and rightly she should be. There are answers and explanations, we finally know what bet Saya made and the reasoning behind it. Things fall into place and start to make a little sense. That's great - but does Saya win or lose the bet? I guess that is left to be interpreted by the viewer or reader because it's just another punch-in-the-face-ending. Things are explained to a satisfactory degree - but that certainly doesn't mean that it's the type of ending I'd have hoped for - it's still plain and simple a frustrating ending and every reread confirms that. Perhaps that is just what I like about it. And yes, I'm still angry.

The four-volume manga series covers both the events of the full anime series and the movie

I haven't read any of the other "Blood" manga series. I started with this one because it's only 4 volumes long.

It's pretty interesting and grabs your attention. The artwork isn't typical CLAMP, and I really like that about it.

Saya and her father live in a little rural town. Although Saya may appear to be an ordinary schoolgirl, she is a demon slayer. While it may seem like nothing much is going on every day, Saya and her father know better. They know that the evil ones are incredibly strong and they are devouring humans at night. Wielding the divine blade, Saya vows to destroy the demons. She is determined to protect the innocence and restore peace to the place where she calls home.

I like Saya. She is a sweet teenager with a kind heart. She is friendly to her classmates and she cares about stray animals. Her friends and neighbors adore her. Even though Saya may not feel like demonstrating her demon-slaying abilities in front of her friends, I like that she tries her best to live a normal life whenever she can.

Perhaps because this is volume one, not that many things are revealed as of yet but I like that quite a number of characters are introduced and they seem to be a lively bunch with distinctive personalities. I’m particularly fond of the sidekicks, Nono and Nene – they are twins and they are super cute! I believe the next volume will be out in June and I have a good feeling that the plot will become a lot more interesting. Can’t wait to get my hands on volume 02.

I enjoyed it but it was slow for a manga and not as exciting as I imagined it would be.

Prelim Review: Its important to remember that this manga is predicated on two things:
1) This was originally an anime series.

2) Its part of the larger 'Blood, the Last Vampire' universe.

If you're going into the manga having watched the anime, read/seen previous incarnations of the universe (Blood+ for instance, which is both an anime and manga domestically available in America) or a combination of the above, your mileage will vary from my experience. For me I've only seen one episode of the anime Blood+ and the live action movie (which...if it wasn't for the British actors I probably would not have seen that movie).

The animated version of Blood-C featured character designs from CLAMP and Ranmaru does a good job of mimicking that style. A really good job, which unaccountably disappointed me. From the art images I've seen of the anime vs this GN, Ranmaru didn't change very much. A few details here or there, but nothing to really make it stand out as her own. It does however manage to avoid the pitfalls of soulessness that other anime to manga adaptations seem to have. (Yu Kinutani looking at your Motoko Kusanagi artwork).

If the above synopsis is vague, its because the first volume is mostly set up for later stories. At least, that's how it feels. We meet Saya, her father (who tends a Shinto Shrine), Fumito (an old family friend, who runs a nearby cafe), Yuka (Saya's leveled headed best friend), Nene and Nono (identical hyperactive, slightly ditsy, twins), Itsuki (polite, affable classmate who has a crush on Saya), Kanako-sensei (their...slightly shady teacher) and Shinichiro (quiet, mysterious, loner classmate).

That's a lot of people. Thankfully they're all easily distinguishable and have interesting (if well traversed) personalities. Content wise, the four chapters are fairly episodic, with a monster of the week appearing. Only one is really important, when she meets a talking 'Ancient One' (which seems to be the phrase for supernatural creatures) the plot picks up at this point though we're still left with a LOT of questions.

Saya goes from complete klutz to crazy sword-wielder when she picks up the blade, which was left to her by her mother (also a crazy sword-wielder). I'm not entirely certain if her Klutz persona is a put on, or if the blade somehow empowers her or what however.

In all this was an okay read for me. I think I'll picking up the anime though because honestly? Waiting to find out what's up with the 'covenant', the shady teacher, Fumito, Shinichiro...well. Hey I'm impatient you know?

Mon avis en Français

My English review

Ah this series... I watched a lot of anime several years ago. A friend made me discover some very good ones and this is how I discovered Blood +. I must say it was a very nice surprise and I watched each episode with a lot of pleasure. Of course I also watched the movie Blood: The Last Vampire but that I didn’t like it that much. I also watched the real movie which was released years earlier but it was the same. But when I discovered this novel, I was curious to see how the paperback copy could be. I do not have a very good memory of the anime so it’s not really possible for me to compare it, I only remember some scenes but it is true that the physical character of Saya is a little different anyway. Less tough, less dark, perhaps. But it does not interfere with the story. We discover a girl rather clumsy but who would do anything to help her friends, whatever the cost. However, she wants her father to be proud of her and for that she works a lot. Indeed, she has many chores at the temple where they live, but in addition to that, she also must fight monsters that come out at night and kill people. It is a duty she takes very seriously especially when it means saving the people she loves. She completely transforms herself in these moments, becoming much more concentrated and serious about her mission. It was a pretty cute first book and I must say that I wonder how will be the others. I think if I get the chance I will try to see if the series and the anime are the same. Hmm and maybe I will have to watch the anime again to really understand the differences.

I watched the original Blood-C series and The Last Dark movie before reading this so I already knew what was supposed to happen. Ranmaru Kotone does a great job adapting what CLAMP started in the TV series. This is streamlined from the anime so there isn't as much blood or violence. Volume 1 is a slow introduction to Saya and her friends. We are told she slays Ancient Ones but we don't actually experience but one of the three encounters in this volume.

I look forward to seeing how much this will diverge from the anime in future volumes.

Given the badass cover, I was expecting this to be a kick ass story, with a bunch of vampire slaying. What I got was a ditzy girl and school woes, not at all what I expected. Given that this is a retelling of Blood the last vampire, Saya is completely different in this from being quiet and badass.

Instead it's most about her father telling her she is destined to protect the world against demons, though not actually getting involved himself, which thinking about it does strike me as a little odd. He's not like a really old man and surely showing her would benefit her, instead of just telling her she's important and sending her on her way with her sword.

All the school stuff was pretty lame, none of her friends interest me in the slightest and the guy who pines for her is clearly oblivious that she's is after Mr tall dark and handsome. The cafe guy making her breakfast with a coffee doesn't add much to the story either.

The monster interactions where already, bit against the grain as Saya seems completely different when taking them on, as if she was a whole new person. I bought the series so hopefully this gets better, not off to the best start so far.

I read this because I've been a long time fan of CLAMP's art work and tragic stories. It's been a long time since I read a Manga. In general, I still like it more than most American graphic novels I've read. I find the art work and style are more interesting and aesthetically pleasing.

I haven't read or watched any of the Manga or Anime this is based on, but I still liked it ... probably more for the art than the story.

I love Clamp and try to read everything to do but this one is just boring and confusing? I tried to read blood+ as well and I didn't like it so I think its just not for me 😕
It's only 4 volumes so I'll probably finish this but I'm not sure if it's supposed to be confusing or if I'm just reading a weird translation.

It's no secret that I'm a sucker for pretty much anything CLAMP does/participates in, and "BLOOD-C" is no exception. I'm also a huge fan of the greater "Blood: The Last Vampire" universe, too. If you've wanted an alternate universe where Kisaragi Saya is a bumbling schoolgirl yet deadly hunter, this is definitely one of the "BLOOD" spin-offs you need to check out.

The content of the manga isn't so different from the "BLOOD-C" TV series, if you've seen that. It covers up until Nene and the Old Ones come into the picture (I'll admit that I'm not really digging Dark Horse's choice of English translation for "furukimono" - I'd have preferred the "Old Ones" over "Ancient Ones", but that's me being nitpicky). What is great is that there are a lot of the foreshadowing clues that didn't seem as obvious in the anime compared to here in the manga - like we can see where things are going, and they're not going in a great direction. And fast.

There's a lot of action, too - lots of battles with the Old Ones, but I'd have preferred more than what we got, but we have a few more volumes to go, so hopefully Kotone and CLAMP will up their game a bit more in future volumes. But what we did get? Kotone really did a great job with those fight scenes, and even though I wish CLAMP had illustrated the manga themselves, Kotone does a good job filling in for them. A really good job. If you're going to check out this manga only because it is apart of the "BLOOD" universe, just check it out for those fight scenes as well as what the Old Ones look like. Pretty creepy, compared to the originals we saw in "Blood: The Last Vampire", "Blood: 2000", and "Blood+".

And as in any CLAMP creation, there's already a crossover clue - keep your eye on the dog Saya finds at the end of this volume, then watch the film that serves as an end to the series, "The Last Dark", if you can. All I can say in that respect is - well played, CLAMP. They took a piece of the "BLOOD" universe and really made it their own. Saya as an innocent, bumbling yet absolutely deadly schoolgirl is an absolutely brilliant angle that I'd hoping someone would create for awhile, and my wish came true with this series. I don't know about everyone else, but I really enjoyed it - and with what's coming up on the horizon for this series (when shit get real), it'll definitely knock your socks off.

Also, the translation is pretty great, and they include all of the original color plates from the source material. Seriously delicious, and worth the buy for those alone.

Final verdict? If you're looking for something new and fun to read, or if you're a CLAMP/BLOOD fan, definitely be sure to check out "Blood-C: Volume 1". It drops from Dark Horse Comics on March 19, 2013 in North America so be sure to look for it then!

The various iterations of Blood, Higurashi, and Jigoku Shoujo are all my favorite manga/anime horror series ever and I'll read/watch anything that's put out for them. And when I saw CLAMP was doing this, I think I literally gasped. (I also love Production I.G too.)

I'll admit I never finished watching the Blood-C anime (I haven't watched much anime at all in the last year) but I'm excited to have the manga translated. I preordered it as soon as I saw it up on Amazon and got my copy last week. Love that we got color pages! Text is really black and crisp too. (Sometimes I think I like admiring manga more than actually reading it ...)

Full review after I actually read it ... heh.

CLAMP's version of the Blood saga might not be as interesting as the Blood+ TV show, but it has it's merits. The artwork of the book is spectacular, as expected. The storyline is interesting, with Saya as a priest's daughter in a countryside town. Everything is normal and calm, except the fact that she is charged with hunting down the 'Old ones' - monstrous creatures that attack humans.

The most interesting aspect of any form of Saya is the fact that she is a killing machine. In The Last Vampire, she is aware of the fact and ruthless in her demeanor. Blood+ Saya was an innocent girl with a family who is thrust into the responsibility of going against her twin sister. This Saya, however, remembers nothing from her past. As a character, she is naive, dense but when it comes to hunting, she becomes the killer she needs to be. This volume set the world for Blood-C and hints at quite a lot of secrets being kept by the other characters.

I really want to like this series more than I do because I'm a huge CLAMP fan. I remember watching the anime back in the day and feeling a little cold about it. I thought I would try the manga, but it has all the same problems as the anime did. It's just... not enough. It's not scary enough to be horror, not action-packed enough to focus on the monster slaying, not school-heavy enough for the slice of life, not romantic enough for the pairing. It's just... so bland. Nothing stands out about it except the artwork and the red-and-black school uniforms (which are gorgeous). Such an average story all around. 3/5

Love the art, iffy on the story.

I watched Blood+ back when it aired on Cartoon Network. (Or was it Toonami? Oh well.) I read the original novel. I'm somewhat aware of this 'verse, but unsure where it fits. Is Saya the same Saya? Hmmm.

Otherwise, there's a lot of classic CLAMP feel to this besides the artsy stuff. The girl twins that deliver news, the lovely girl/girl moments, maybe more. Love that Saya has a Sailor Moon-esque pigtail thing going on. #trueheroine

Whether I'm going to read more is 50/50. We'll see.

It's sort of like a Japanese "Buffy" - a young girl living with her father is the only one in the world chosen to protect her friends from "the ancient ones" - demons who attack and kill humans in her small rural town.
Like everything CLAMP it's beautifully illustrated, and has a good share of mysterious characters both human and animal/creature that I am sure will be revealed to be much more than meets the eye as the series progresses.

I have seen the Blood-C anime previously so am looking forward to seeing how this story plays out in an anime format. I was happy when I managed to find the whole series discounted in a sale and promptly bought the whole lot to add to my growing manga collection.
So far it looks good, I quite like the art style and the story is very similar to what I remember from the anime.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

Unfortunately there are a lot of panes that say nothing. I'm not even sure who Saya is as a person within the first 50 pages or so.

Her whole relationship at school feels like filler for the story.

I don't know what I was missing, but I'm very disappointed as I loved the cartoon and even the live action film.

Tbh, if I hadn't seen the anime before, I wouldn't have given it even 2 stars. Knowing what happens and why the first chapters are like that definitely helps with enjoying the manga a tiny bit. Frankly speaking, I was hoping for more drawn-out battle sequences and uncensored deaths but I suppose you can't have everything.

Saya's a cool girl, obtuse but also clear headed when needed. Even though she's super clumsy, she's somehow able to be athletic. I know the student council president and Guimare's chef are both crushing on her, and I think her thing with her father is really weird, but whatever, I guess. I'm not quite sure what to make of the rest yet. I like Yuko. Is that something?

So it's a series based upon CLAMP's work but not actually by CLAMP. Despite this, the art is quite good (though the action sequences are a bit hard to follow) while the plot is an unfocused mess that spends too much time on school antics.
