In the first biography of the author of All Quiet on the Western Front and the legendary star of Modern Times, Gilbert follows Remarque and Goddard as their lives move toward each other, brilliantly evoking these very different but dramatic personalities. Includes never-before-published excerpts from letters and diaries. Photos.
2 w 1, czyli biografia Ericha Marii Remarque'a i Paulette Goddard.
The Remarque Institute at NYU has a particular interest in the themes of dissidence, exile, and pacifism is a tribute to Remarque and a reflection of the trajectory of his life, the circumstances under which he worked, and the themes with which his most famous literary works are concerned. The Institute exists because of Paulette Goddard Remarque. I don't understand why the writer chose not be supportive of her generosity, without it, this book would not exist.
What was missing for me was more information about how EMR prepared the research for his books. He was a beautiful man and I love his work. He was a lapsed Catholic, I found out at the end of the book, I would have like to know more about his beliefs and why he gave up Catholicism.
Paulette Goddard was remarkable and spectacular.
One needs a deep interest in EMR to get into this, I would have appreciated some finer editing with regard to their personal letters.
