I loved “Invisible Women” so much, so I was naturally really excited to get my hands on this book. While I enjoyed a lot of it, and I thought the information and stories presented were important and relevant, something just didn’t work for me. I expected to feel empowered and hopeful, but instead felt a lack of hope. So many gut wrenching stories and difficult statistics. It felt like the book dwelled more on the really, really awful plight of women around the world rather than on how things are improving. There were amazing stories of women defying the odds or standing up for themselves and other women, but they were few and far between and much more page-space was filled with stories of the danger, unfairness, trauma, etc that women face today. I think more than anything I felt that the title didn’t describe the book. The specific examples of women fighting to make the world better for women were inspiring, but mostly it felt like “doing it like a woman” is still synonymous with working hard to get nowhere, not changing the world. Baby steps I suppose…
Couldn’t follow the thread of events very well. It wasn’t clear when we were jumping to the next story, and it wasn’t always clear where the statistics and facts were coming from or in what country we were talking. Some stories in the book were interesting and gripping to read. Quite depressing as opposed to motivational or inspiring. Couldn’t finish it.
I enjoyed reading the stories of such a diverse set of women from around the globe. It was very inspiring, that that way offered a unique perspective. However, it was quite difficult to follow at times, I feel that it was hard to tell when the individual stories changed and there were a lot of heavy statistics that I sometimes couldn’t figure out what country were were talking about. It also being only 5 chapters made it feel so long to read. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone average person who wants to learn about less mainstream women/feminists who are changing the world.
This book made me enraged, sad and hopeful at the same time! It's so lovely to read about how fellow women are fighting the good fight and at the same time it makes me so sad that we still has too - and unfortunately, right now women's rights once again seems to be under attack.
Inspirational stories from inspirational women, framed to transform women‘s disadvantages into strength and new opportunities. A recollection and summary of feminist themes, but all in all quite basic. Lack of depth.
