A Pleistocene man, weakest among his tribe, invents a new weapon that turns him into a fierce hunter and unwittingly ushers in a new age of intertribal war.
In the beginning everything was the same the dirt, the dirt bags, the polydactyl horses etc. Just like in the end, which are one and the same, if you understand relativity. Also, I doubt that spears evolved from throwing stones. Spears (with flaked stone tips) probable evolved from originally fire hardened wooden spears in combination with flaked stone knives.
A speculative retrospect of ancient man and an event that moved the evolution a step forward, told in a thought provoking manner.
The main character, being outcast to an extent, is in a position where his thoughts are given perhaps more time to develop. A single event of survival triggers a need in him to investigate and develop something revolutionary. The tale also lays forth the typical effect of such events that can lead to the extinction of the innovator, but the leap forward that a species can experience.
