A romcom retake on Father of the Bride about letting go, falling in love, and a whole lot of lasagna
For someone who doesn’t do well with change, Pippin Marino sure is dealing with a lot of it. First her twin sister returns from Europe with a fiancé and a plea for Pippin to plan the wedding. Then her mom announces plans to sell the 100 year old family restaurant that Pippin has been running since her father died.
But at least there’s one good development in Pippin’s life. After eight years on the west coast, her best friend Toby Sullivan surprises her by moving back to Boston. Having him back is the one bright spot amidst her summer of panic, especially when he offers to help her plan the wedding.
But then one kiss changes everything.
And Pippin Marino does not do well with change.
Sister of the Bride is a steamy, slow-burn friends-to-lovers romcom with wedding planning, pasta, a Grey's Anatomy-loving Nonna, and a guaranteed HEA.
Lauren Morrill is the author of spicy adult and sweet YA romance, including Sister of the Bride, Meant to Be (Delacorte) and It’s Kind of a Cheesy Love Story (Farrar, Straus and Giroux). She loves all things romantic comedy and specializes in kissing books. Lauren lives in Knoxville, TN with her husband, Adam Ragusea, and their two children.
This started off slow but I liked it eventually, so 3,5 stars rounded up!
Pippin and Toby have been best friends since they were kids. Toby is back in Boston after spending eight years in California and Pippin starts seeing him in a different light.
I really enjoyed the romance. It was believable, the chemistry was great and they both made sure that there was no third-act breakup, so no drama, only fluff!
Toby was a cinnamon roll type with a dirty mouth and as we all know it’s the best combo there is. He was adorable, mature and almost perfect (and the spice!!!🔥🔥🔥😮💨) Almost perfect though, because unfortunately he had had a girlfriend during his California years, which ruined the “it’s always been you” element for me.
Pippin was a little lost at times, but there was a lot going on in her life so we can forgive her.
However, there are reasons why I didn’t rate this higher.
There were two details which bothered me enough to mention. The first thing, accent shaming is not cool, the second, whatever your political preferences, a romance novel is no place to point out which US presidential election results you celebrated.
Another thing, the beginning was dragging, there was a lot about Polly’s new fiancée, the wedding, and all sorts of things that had nothing to do with Pippin and Toby. I would’ve preferred the background story and the main storyline to be more interwoven because it felt like reading two separate books, one after another.
All in all, after you've soldiered on through the first 30-ish% it’s a good romance!
TW: -loss of a parent (mentioned) -grief -light ow drama
Thank you Yellow House Media and NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
"Why don't eggs tell jokes? They'd crack each other up! Come on, that one was good."
Pippins life has been turned upside down and she is struggling to deal with everything. Her sister, Polly has returned back from Europe now engaged. Her mum has decided to sell the restaurant that belonged to her dad and Pippin had been running and has been her life ever since she lost her dad. The only thing that she can now relay on is Toby. Her best friend who has returned back into her life (in person)after 8 years along with many dad jokes. After Polly and her Pippin's friends have started planting ideas in her head. Are Pippin and Toby just friends or is there something more to their friendship.
The story was a light read. I felt even though the title was true, I didn't feel it was the right one. As you don't find out that Polly is getting married until maybe about 20%, but the reader knows from the word go. I felt the relationship between Pippin and Toby took a while to develop, but when it did I found especially the ending to be very rushed, but I enjoyed the epilogue and how it brought everything together. Also bonus points for using the name Polly- it isn't very often I get to see my name in a book and I love the dedication.
Thank you Netgalley for a copy of the book for an honest review
I said this several times in my updates, but the structure of this novel was all wrong. It takes us almost 20% of the ebook to even find out that her sister is engaged and WE ALREADY KNOW THIS BECAUSE IT'S IN THE SYNOPSIS! I skipped ahead to the part where the protagonist and the love interest kiss (this was also already promised in the synopsis) just to get a fuller picture (and a naive hope that this book would get better) and no, it seems like this book just drags every event out forever.
In the perfect world (where every book I read is worthy of 5 stars) this book would have opened up with the engagement announcement and the kiss would have happened somewhere in the 20-40% range and then tension and romcom shenanigans would have built up from there. But alas, it was not meant to be.
It really is a crime that this book has the audacity to share a birthday with me (its pub date is September 12th). Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
What a fun read! I connected so quickly with Pippin, a restaurant manager/chef juggling way too many things and none that she picked herself; she was so likeable and relatable, flaws and all. Her relationships with her family were enviable and the super slow burn into something more with her best friend was entertaining. The writing flowed so well and drew me into the story. I’m usually easily distracted and take frequent breaks but I rarely put this one down.
I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.
Something about this just hit me perfectly - AMAZING friends to lovers romance, perfect personal growth, oldest sister vibes (even though they're twins). Highly recommend this, I had a great time.
Lauren Morrill's Sister of the Bride is a lovely heartwarming friends-to-lovers romance. The story follows Pippin Marino, whose life is going through many unexpected changes, but her best friend, Toby Sullivan, remains a constant source of support. Pippin can't help but entertain thoughts of a romantic relationship with Toby, but her fears hold her back.
The characters in the book are all lively and memorable - especially Pippin's family. However, I felt that Toby didn't get as much attention as he deserved; since the story is narrated solely from Pippin's perspective. The romance between Pippin and Toby also took a while to develop and wasn't explored in depth until much later in the book.
Despite these minor criticisms, I found Sister of the Bride to be a delightfully funny and entertaining family drama. The ending felt a bit rushed, but the epilogue tied things up nicely. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a cozy and cute tale with a touch of romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an advance copy of this book due for release on Sept. 12, 2023; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was cute, but to have loved this friends-to-more romance, I would have needed more on the page time with the couple in question. Or to have gotten Toby's perspective, too. As it stands, Pippin was kind of a head-case and with everything else that was happening in the story, there should have been more discussion between these characters, rather than just jumping to the sexy times. Which, admittedly, were fine, but without the build-up, they seemed...rushed.
Long-time fan of the author's work and I'll definitely pick up her next adult novel. This one just wasn't my favorite.
This unfortunately didn’t work for me. I am enjoying the author's writing, however the story is dragging and it feels like nothing much is happening. I wanted more Toby and Pippin, but in the 25% that I have read so far, only two interactions have happened between them. I keep hoping for more, but I'm not patient enough to read more, so I'm dnf'ing.
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
adam regusea’s wife, my beloved. this book was good enough but could really use some more work. the ending felt rushed when it easily could have turned into a cliffhanger for book 2.
Sister of the Bride was cute story with lots of lighthearted and heartwarming seasoning.
I love the idea of this book but i'm gonna be honest that i had a hard time getting through it. The characters felt so flat and i didn't connect with any of them. But they are potentially one of the nicest and coolest character arcs i've read.
All in all, this was a light book to be read with a cup of coffee and a warm blanket in a summer day.
This is the kind of book that you could easily sit and read in one sitting so I’m a little annoyed it took me so long to finish it! I really loved this. I’ve enjoyed Morrill’s young adult books and was so quick to request this from NetGalley when I saw she wrote an adult contemporary romance. The main character was occasionally frustrating but I have to say, the lack of drama and miscommunication in this one (especially in a few key areas near the end) was just perfect. There were a few repetitive sentences but they’re the type of thing that I think probably got cleaned up before the finished copy. I really hope she continues writing more books for adult readers! There’s the same charm and banter as her YA books so if you’re a fan of hers in general, I would recommend checking this one out as long as you don’t mind some spice!
First, it is noteworthy that I had a book hangover for days after finishing the epilogue. I absolutely loved this book!
An absolute must-read for fans of: 📱 Dad jokes 🇮🇹 Lasagna 🍦 Love scenes instigated by ice cream 😘 Sweet talking heroes 🙌 ‘It’s always been you.’
Pippin is having a quarter-life crisis. Her family has decided to sell the restaurant that she‘s been pouring herself into since her dad’s death. The building also happens to be the home she’s lived in since birth. And her sister has returned from Europe engaged to a stranger that Pippin just can’t get a read on.
Enter best friend Toby who is also back in town after an 8 year stint studying in California. The perfect balance to Pippin’s energy—he is such a swoony hero!
The honesty in this friends to lovers story made my heart so happy, and bonus points for no third act break-up.
Cannot recommend this one enough for a laugh out loud book that will leave you grinning from ear to ear. Do NOT read this book without snacks… you’ll be starving. And if you happen to have been obsessed with the 1991 Steve Martin movie Father of the Bride, you will die over all the fun call-backs!
This book releases in September! Thanks to @netgalley and @laurenmorrill for the arc. All opinions are mine.
Well...this was super cute! I'm in love with this book 🥰 This is the perfect romance novel to devour in one sitting (which I did) 😄 If you love the movie Father of the Bride as much as I do, then you'll love this book! It's funny, filled with sweet moments and the friends to lovers trope is just perfect! ❤
Pip and Toby were super cute, their friendship was sweet and fun and extremely adorable. The best part?: He sends her bad dad jokes every day! I mean come on! How can you not fall for this man? 😅
Easy 5/5 ⭐ read if you ask me!
I'm so grateful that I got the chance to read the ARC before the book comes out in September.
I loved this title. This was a laugh out loud, giggle, and swoon-worthy book, with just the right amount of spice.
The cute puns and dad jokes really help you get a feel for who the characters are. There is so much growth in our main character's relationships, not just romantic, but with her twin sister and her family, she was very well rounded.
The book is so well written, you truly feel like you are there in the moment with them. And the dialogue feels very natural.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Many thanks to Netgalley and One More Chapter for the free E-ARC in return for an honest review.
Rating: 3.75/5 Spice: 2 (as in, two vanilla spicy scenes)
I went into this book blind, because I have the terrible habit of requesting books MONTHS in advance of the publication date and then promptly forgetting what the entire book is actually about.
I quite enjoyed Pippin's story as she grapples with the changes in her life. Her mother is selling the family restaurant, her sister is getting married and Pip will have to move out of her childhood home, find a job and to top it all off, wrestle with her growing feelings for her best friend. And Pip doesn't exactly handle change well...
I thought the writing style and the personalisation of the characters was really well done. The dialogue had a natural flow and the characters all felt fleshed out enough to bond with them. The issue I had with this book was the pacing. Because halfway through I went back and read the blurb and found out that Pip and Toby kiss at the 50% mark, which I found to be a little too far into the story to focus on their growing relationship. Don't get me wrong, I loved the idea of them getting together and there was some very decent spice, but the pacing of the book was just a little wonky. Same with Polly announcing her wedding. It took a little too long.
I would absolutely recommend this book if you enjoy the hustle and bustle of wedding planning, friends-to-lovers, and a family restaurant!
Pippin Marino has been running the 100-year-old family restaurant for the last few years. Her twin sister is returning from Europe after studying aboard. After she returns, she announces that she is engaged, and Pippin is going to have to plan the wedding. Pippin has been BFF with Toby Sullivan for 20 years and he shows back up in town after 8 years of being in California studying to be a doctor. He is taking a job at the local hospital in the ER department. Toby no longer has a girlfriend and after a spontaneous kiss with him it changes their relationship. Pippin is now having thoughts about Toby and more than being just friends. Toby is also keeping secrets from Pippin and needs to come clean about his return to Boston.
I have the distinct pleasure of knowing Lauren in real life but if I didn't already know her, I'd want to be her best friend after reading this book. The way she writes dialogue and her characters' thoughts is seriously next level. Some choice words I highlighted were "stretchitude", "Kool-Aid man my way through it", and "unfgh". My kindle is literally FULL of highlights from this book. And the dad jokes... oh the DAD JOKES.
You want a wedding book? You want a friends to lovers romance? You want a book that will make you crave bolognese and cannoli? This is IT. But more than that, you'll be bursting at the seams for Pippin and Toby to *fiiiiiiinally* get together. It's sizzling with sexual tension throughout that left me screaming "JUST KISS ALREADY!" while my partner was sleeping next to me. But they're playing the long game and it's what's necessary to get these characters to risk a long-term friendship. (But when it fucks, it fuuuuucks).
There's no way that this book won't get snatched up by a Big 5 publisher in the next few years. I want to eat at Marino's, go to therapy with Dr Nora, and finally force Mackenzie to watch When Harry Met Sally. Be ready for this book to become your personality.
*Thank you to Lauren Morrill and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review*
Oh man this was such a cute friend to lover’s rom com about accepting change and finding yourself without the burden of fighting to save the family restaurant in your dad’s memory. Also finally realizing that maybe your string of bad relationships is not because you can’t commit but that you already had someone who fulfilled all your relationship needs except the sex in your best friend and there wasn’t room for anyone else in your heart when he was already in there. This was a fun and fast read.
Thanks to Yellow House Media and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I loved this so much! Lots of personality, lots of family, lots of romance. Meant To Be was one of the first YA contemps I ever read and it became a favorite. This reminded me of that, but a lot more adult obviously! Such a joy to read.
Sister of the Bride is a remarkably cute friends-to-lovers contemporary romance. We get a full steamy scene, with a few not-quite-all-the-way scenes thrown in for good measure. There’s dirty jokes, and heavy references to ~adult~ things that I fully appreciated.
I LOVE BOOKS THAT MAKE ME FEEL LIKE I'M WATCHING A ROMCOM!! ROMCOMS ARE BACK!!!!
Her best friend has Toby Sullivan surprised her by moving back to Boston. Having him back is the one bright spot amidst her summer of panic, especially when he offers to help her plan the wedding.
But then one kiss changes everything.
I loved how real the characters were in this one - flaws and all. Pippin's reaction to everything was quite bad at first, but she realizes it and makes amends. Can't really blame her though as everything in her life was imploding(but I also loved how Mackenzie's mom Nora gave her a reality check too). And as someone who also hated change, I found her relatable. I loved how snarky she was(even when she's being judgemental😂). Her relationship with her family especially her sister - Polly is amazing! It takes a while for her to warm up to Polly's fiance Mackenzie, but she does begin to appreciate her slowly too!
On the other hand she's always been the closest with her best friend Toby and I loved the slow progression from friends to lovers here! It's not one of my favorite tropes but it worked out so well in this one and it felt so believable! Also, we could truly feel how close they were even if we didn't have many recollections of their past because the connection is always present. So, I was rooting for these two to end up together and waiting for Pip to get over her fears and face her feelings for him.
Toby is such a cinnamon roll because he's so cute, patient and funny! Those dad jokes at the beginning of every chapter were hilarious and he was always there for her when she needed him!🥺 Also, he's willing to wait for her because he knows her difficulties and he understands that she needs time. And extra points for no third act breakup or drama. I feel like we can't find a romcom book without that these days, so I really appreciated the fact that there wasn't anything like that here 😂
Overall this was a great read that had some amazing and real characters with a really cute romance too!❣️✨
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
This is one of those friends-to-lover stories that make me hate this trope — the idea that you'd be best friends with a person for forever but never realize you had feelings for them, or that a flip switches out of nowhere and you go from only best friends to all of a sudden raging horny addict is ludicrous to me.
Cutest illustrated cover I've seen in a long time. Unfortunately, the title doesn't fit the main trope.
This is a best-friends-to-lovers story. Pippin and Toby have been best friends since childhood. He went away to be a dr and now he's back in town. Pippin is busy with the family restaurant and helping her twin sister organize her wedding.
Sometimes I get frustrated with best friends trope because one of the characters is always "I can't ruin the friendship" and that just goes on forever. Thankfully, that part was not a drag.
Language and explicit scenes.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
Sister of the Bride is a remarkably cute friends-to-lovers contemporary romance. The absolutely adorable cover is the reason I requested an ARC of this one, and to be completely honest with you, I wasn’t sure if the book itself would live up to the cover. But I am happy to report that it does! I, for some stupid reason, thought this was going to be one of those stupidly chaste closed-door contemporary romances, but nope. We get a full steamy scene, with a few not-quite-all-the-way scenes thrown in for good measure. There’s dirty jokes, and heavy references to ~adult~ things that I fully appreciated.
What I did not appreciate, though, was Pippin. I wanted to like her so much, but girl. CALM. DOWN. She was upset over literally everything — which, I mean, makes sense bc her entire life was crashing down around her — but reading about her freaking out got old really quickly. It did not ruin the book for me, but it came close. Especially when she took so damn long to realize what a catch Toby was. Which, by the way, takes over 50% of the book. They flirt pretty well together, but Pip is DETERMINED to not be attracted to Toby. Idiot.
Toby, however, is a giant precious cinnamon roll. I loved every second he was on page — especially his stupid dad jokes that began every chapter. He’s smart, hot as sin, funny, and a doctor. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT, PIP. Seriously, woman, tell me.
ANYWAY, Sister of the Bride is absolutely worth the read, especially if you like friends-to-lovers. Four stars!
Life cannot truly be lived standing still, but sometimes Pippin wishes it could be. Change can be uncomfortable and overwhelming and she's had more than her fair share of it so far in her life, most of which has ended badly. It's why she still lives in the same home she grew up in above the restaurant her family has owned in Boston for over 100 years. It's why when her father unexpectedly died, she took over running things - consistency is key. But in the blink of an eye, the changes start piling up. Her childhood best friend Toby moves back to the city and is a welcome sight for tired eyes, followed soon after by Pippin's twin sister. And her twin sister's fiance. And now all of a sudden, Mom wants to sell the restaurant which means Pippin has very quickly become someone on the verge of joblessness and homelessness and in her single-ness, who can help catch her as she's falling? Well, like we said, Toby IS back in town, and his offers to Pippin with her maid of honor duties turn into nights out and kisses and more if she'd let it.
I have been a Lauren Morrill fan for years, getting my hands on as many of her young adult titles as I could. This is her adult debut, and any YA collection curators out there should know: this is NOT a young adult book! This is adult. This is SPICY. This is romance slathered in siracha. This book is so steamy with sexy times that the author actually told her own mother to please not read it otherwise they'll never be able to look each other in the eye ever again. Now personally, I was down for it. I like the romance novels I read to have well-built worlds, a well-rounded cast of characters, and stakes that feel realistic. This can sometimes be a tall order for the genre, but Morrill takes on the challenge well. A blind person could see how wonderful Toby is even when Pippin fights it, and this was a clever take on a Father of the Bride type of story. I read this a while ago and posted about loving it on my Instagram, and a friend of mine immediately asked when she could get a copy. Not for the first time, I was appreciative of advance reader copies so I didn't have to wait, and I know I'll be recommending this one to my friends in need of a pick-me-up.
The Marino family restaurant has been a Boston institution for years with many loyal customers, but things were about to change for everyone in the family. Pippin is my favorite character; the dutiful Italian daughter and grand-daughter who took over managing the restaurant after her beloved father passed away. She never really planned on a life at the restaurant but she loves being with her family and wouldn’t have it any other way. Pippin’s life got even busier when her twin sister, Polly, returned from London asking her to plan her wedding. Pippin quickly found a wedding planning app and she was good to go, or so she thought.
The next big change in her life was the return of her best friend, Toby, from California. He had accepted a residency at an Emergency Department in Boston and Pippin couldn't be happier for him.Toby looked so much hotter than the last time she saw him and he was currently single having broken up with his long term girlfriend Out of nowhere, Pippin began having romantic feelings for Toby. Perhaps all the wedding festivities and how happy her sister is was causing these crazy feelings she was having. Pippin would never ruin her friendship with Toby for a passionate night with him, or would she? With all the changes in her life, especially the sale of the restaurant, could Pippin make a rational decision about anything? Pippin also needs to find a job and a place to live, all while planning the perfect wedding for Polly. In my mind, Pippin is a super woman who can do anything she puts her mind to. Pippin deserves goodness, happiness and the love of a good man and I am confident all her dreams will come true!
My first ever advanced reading copy, and I was so happy have been reading this book! I loved this book! Especially the last 30% I've just sped through it, I've read that in 1 day (and I am not a fast reader at all, so this definitley says something about how much I love the book)
Pippin's life is troubled. There is so much going on, it feels like her life is falling apart. With her twin sister Polly who suddenly, out of the blue has plans to get married and move out. Her mother wants to sell her home and the restaurant that has been in the family for over 100 years and has been Pippin's home and base, But then Toby Sullivan, her long-time best friend, moves back home. How come she suddenly thinks he is so hot??
I really love the strong friendship and the banter between Pippin and Toby- Oh, the dad jokes, i actually loved them. How they were building up to that kiss, and from there on, how for Pippin it all seems to be tumbling down, or was it? The spice building up between them was great!
Oh, I would have loved to read more about the wedding andI also wish to have a little more of a side-story about Nonna and mom, and how they continued. They story could have been longer for my liking, I would love to read more about the Marino's, and the other side-characters. But these are minor things that are of little consequence, they could have made a good story great! Its a solid 4.5stars.
Sister of the Bride was adorable. I related to Pippin so much, I had a sibling get married really quickly and out of the blue and a lot of the thoughts she has - though looking at it written on paper they seem kind of selfish - I thought them all. I absolutely love a friends to lovers romance and Toby is a dream book boyfriend. Their romance is so sweet and you can really feel the love between them, both platonic and romantic.
I would happily read another ten chapters of them just being happy together. I also would love to read more about Poppy and Mackenzies romance!
I loved the communication between Pip and Toby, though Pip had a lot going on and was constantly trying to hold of the reality of her feelings I really loved how open they were with each other - I loved that there were no big bad secrets that would come up later to cause drama - it was all trust which was so nice to read.
I would totally recommend this book to anyone who wants a good, sweet, spicy romance that doesn’t have a catastrophic break up in the third act this is the book for you!
Thanks to Netgalley, Yellow House Media and the author, Lauren Morrill for providing me with a e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. I do really recommend picking this up when it hits shelves on September 12th!
