Dark Oz #1

Dark Oz

Rate this book
I’m off to find the Wizard, and I’m not going to let anyone stand in my way…

Not my vicious Aunt Em, who wants me dead because I tried to expose her human trafficking ring. Not Westin Witcher, who is seeking payback after I killed her cousin. And especially not the dangerous group of smugglers running Yellow Brick Taxi.

I’m at their mercy to get me to the Emerald City, and I’m under no illusions about my unlikely heroes. Hiding beneath Crowe’s protective act is a violent past, and Danny may behave like a king, except he’s really a coward. While Nick is just heartless.

I’ll sacrifice whatever it takes to meet the Wizard and convince him to give me a new life outside of Oz. Plus, I have the ultimate bargaining chip—the emerald I stole from Eastin Witcher.

I just have to make it there alive first…

Dark Oz is a new contemporary why choose, mafia romance series that’s a deliciously dark reimagining of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This heart pounding retelling is perfect for fans of Tate James, Katee Robert, and Emily Mcintire.

Most days, you can find Geneva wandering the streets of her small colonial town or snuggling up beside a fire with her husband, son, and two cats. No matter the location, she probably has a book in one hand and a macchiato in the other.

If a remake of The Wizard of Oz is ever created, this book should be the blueprint. It's the only version I will accept. It's dark, it's gritty, it's a little triggering, but I was on the edge of my seat THE WHOLE TIME.

This is not a fluffy retelling, but I didn't want it fluffy, so it definitely delivered.

It stuck to aspects of the original story but was still extremely different. The author didn’t try too hard to replicate it and made it completely her own by going with such a dark storyline.

Anyone who is familiar with the original story will recognise the references, but I think they were incorporated really naturally.

For context, there are references to: Flying monkeys, Wicked Witches, The Wizard, Toto, Oz, Auntie Em, Poppies (book reference) & lot more.

Forewarning: If you loved these characters in the book/film you are probably not going to love them in this. They are represented very differently.

Also, note that this is based on a fantasy, but it isn't a fantasy world, it's set in reality. So no magic at all.

I was a little apprehensive going into it, as the first chapter starts in an unpleasant situation (not triggering, but the situation is unfortunate). Looking back on it, I think this was the best place to begin, so the FMC could explain her background.
________

There are so many layers to these goddamn characters that it's honestly wasted on me. Every part of their backstory seems to tie into the character they are based on, but in really interesting ways. This includes their names.

E.g. ‘Crowe’ is based on ‘The Scarecrow’ (it took me way too long to realise he was called Crowe because of this 🫣). He was frequently said to ‘not use his head’ (no brain) & he used to be an enforcer, so he used to scare people away who encroached on their turf (like a scarecrow does).

I'm sorry, maybe I'm easily impressed, but every part of their character was so thought through.

We also have Danny (cowardly lion) & Nick (tinman), who also have a lot of connotations attached to their names and interwoven into their character.

I'm trying not to spoil everything!!

The relationship with each of the MMCs was at very different stages, which I prefer in a harem. It keeps it interesting. There was Insta-love and enemies to lovers also thrown in there.

The spice happens a lot towards the middle and end. It didn't start too early, due to some personal circumstances, which I think was the right decision.

The FMC, ‘Thea’ (Dorothy - short for Dorothee) was definitely a princess at points, stamping her feet and having pointless arguments to win. I didn't see this in a negative way though, as she never had the opportunity to voice her opinions without repercussions before, so she's taking advantage of it.

She was also very strong, resilient and never let these men have the upper hand.

I'm currently downloading the next book because that cliffhanger was 😅😨😰 I need it immediately.

The triggers are extremely detailed in the content warning. Just be warned, as the storyline centres around sex trafficking. In the author's foreward, she does explain that you shouldn't read this if it will affect your mental health, even at the expense of not reading her book. I mean the woman even included hotline numbers, she sounded very conscious and empathic.

Beautiful cover also.

I’m not usually big on retellings, but this surpassed every expectation I could have imagined. Dark and mysterious, morally grey characters, gun fights, explosions, and SPICE! And I’m going to be honest - I don’t know whether the romance or the plot was better. This book is a unicorn.

“Dorothy was powerless, but Thea is unbreakable.”

Thea is a survivor. Running from her aunt, she’s escaped into a whole new world that she had only heard rumors of before. Narrowly avoiding death, she needs to get to the one person who can help her before it’s too late. But can the people she find along the way be trusted? Or will they stab her in the back like everyone else?

"I will burn it down. I will dismantle what she has built brick by brick. I will strip the beams and build a pyre unlike OZ has ever known. Then I will strap her to the center and drop the match. I don't care if I have to take the whole world with me.”

Enter the men: Danny, Nick, and Crowe. Each one is different in almost every way, except for one - they want Thea. Whether they want to fight her, throw her to the wolves, or keep her for themselves, they will stop at nothing until they get what they want. Even if it means breaking her in the process.

"Do your worst. Because when you're done, I will do mine."

From the first line all the way to the epic finish, I was hooked. At no point did I know what was going to happen next. It has a really refreshing take on the Wizard of Oz that makes these mythical characters come to life. But this isn’t your momma’s childhood story anymore. The people in this book are gritty and dark in all the best ways. And I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens next!

I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

If you enjoy retellings such as The Never King by Nikki St Crowe, but wish for more plot, this is what you´re looking for. This dark, why-choose romance retelling of the Wizard of Oz is different from Geneva´s Sun Serpent series, but not any less good. The way she managed to intercept both spice and plot is extraordinary.

If you´re into quick or slowburn, this book has it all. Personally, I´m 100% a slowburn kinda girl and also very into fictional men that restrain themselves but are actually really attracted to the FMC. The mysterious ones that you cannot quite tell what they´re thinking and you just know they got secrets (Geneva, you probably understand which one of these males are my personal fave, this is my official application to be "fiore mio"). But with three guys, you got all three variants of burn here. Quick, middle and slow.

This book was really easy to get lost in, the chapters just flew by while reading. And the tension at the end of the book had me at the edge of my seat. I was gaping, punching the pillow and screaming in joy at the marvelous and exciting ending, which I know others are cursing you for. As a fantasy-lover, I thought I would not like this book as much as Geneva´s Sun Serpent series, but gosh was I wrong. Geneva´s writing skills got me out of the couch and on the front row of exciting scenes with gun shooting, car-chasing and hot spice.

Luckily, Geneva has already promised us more books of this amazing retelling. A must read for any retelling-lovers. Preorder this now so that you´re guaranteed to be reading it at the release on October 6th.

I’m going to start with: This has to the SPICEST book I’ve ever read. 🌶️

Now that that is out of way. This has to be one of the best retellings I have read. The plot and story line were fantastic and now I have to know what happens after they met with the Wizard! Can’t not wait to see how they take down Westin Witcher! 👏

This dark and gritty version of The Wizard of Oz is exactly the kind of retelling I enjoy! It’s a modern day Wizard of Oz, but nothing like the original story. It’s something all together unique.

I liked the characters, especially Thea, the badass FMC. There’s tons of explicit, spicy, content if that’s something you like. The themes of the book are dark. Check out the Trigger warnings if you are sensitive. If you like the Never After series you’ll enjoy this!

3.75/5 ⭐️
3/5 🌶️

A retelling of The Wizard of Oz but make it dark.. umm yes! A why choose, mafia-eque story, I was wondering how this was going to work in what I knew of the Oz, and it clicked with the witch of the East. The nods to the story be it name of characters and/or traits were like little ooh moments.

Dark Oz gives multiple POV’s with Dorothea, Crowe, Danny, and Nick. With each you get to see what they are dealing with, whether is feelings for Thea or what their past did to them. In the end they are all survivors, Thea more recently than her three men.

All four MC’s are dealing with trauma that makes them wary of any situation they find themselves in.

What drew me in was the action that was incorporated throughout a majority of the book and it’s a why choose so you know it was going to be spicy, and it has what I’ve seen is the why choose formula, the affectionate one who gets things going, the one who is hesitant but gives in and finally the moody/grumpy one holding out. Don’t be surprised when it’s more spice than you expect. It’s three guys after all.

I was more than half way and I was honestly thinking this was a solid four star read until it was getting closer to the end it felt a little rushed. Then came the dreaded, I should have seen this coming, it’s a series. (Not knowing this was my own fault)

Will I read the next books coming out? yes, I want to know what happens and Nick has some explaining to do.

Overall I did enjoy reading Geneva Monroe for the first time and the story was good.

One of the best adult spins to a childhood favorite story I have read!

This is one that has been on my TBR since I saw this talented queen start dropping hints on TikTok. Hands down, this is one of the best adult spin retellings I have had the pleasure of getting my hands on.
Thea is woman who is determined to escape the clutches of her sadistic aunt, when she does she is thrown into world of secrets and doesn’t know who she can trust. I love how this heroine stays strong even when at her lowest, is smarter than she lets on and is willing to go into thick of danger.
Crowe, Danny and Nick - Scarecrow, cowardly lion and Tin Man - the lover, the protector, and the grumpiest of grumps caregiver. These three intrigue me while making me want to punch something at the same time so much. I love how distinct their personalities are and how they work together perfectly.
This was a one sit read for me and Geneva left me screaming at the end because of the cliffhanger but I loved the glimpse into the “wizard’s” side of things. This author not only kept me engaged, she kept me on the edge of my seat and squealing with either the suspense and action, the panty melting steam or the surprise twists. I love how she modernized one of my favorite stories and truly made it her own - I can’t wait to dive into the next one.

In this dark adaptation of the classic tale of The Wizard of Oz, you're pulled into a world of dirty deeds, and unsavory dealings. Em is a crime lord who deals in trafficking. Dorothy "Thea" finds herself on the wrong side of the trafficking ring and is sold by her aunt to Eastin. The witch of the East, and she has no plans to stay that way. She kills Eastin and spirits away with Crowe (scarecrowe) and finds herself in their secure base. Alongside Nick (tinman) and Danny (the lion) they have to find a way to save her because none of them wants to let her go once they've had a taste. Twisted and dark but also incredibly salacious and dangerous, the plot twists on making for an excellent shift in a retelling that will have you hooked.

This is a darkretelling of a classic children's book and is a why choose book. I fell in love with this book and the characters and couldn't pit it down. Thea is the FMC and she is so strong and independent. She escapes her evil Aunt Em and her illegal human trafficking she has going on.

Thea ends up running into Crowe, Danny, and Nick. One of the boys wants to help her while the other two just see her as a way to get to the wizard and get their own revenge.

They set off for the wizard but you find out more about the boys on the way and that they didn't live a very great life themselves. Stuff happens on the way and who boy had me gripping my kindle. Love the spicy scenes and just thoroughly enjoyed this.

That cliffhanger was something and so need the next book now.

Meh. Not my favorite, but of course the book just ends abruptly so now I feel like I have to read the next one to know what happens. Every time I picked this book up I felt like Dorothy in the original movie when she falls asleep due to the overwhelming scent of the poppy field. Except I just fell asleep due to boredom....

Omgs I loved this book! I love a good dark retelling. The characters were done so well. I love a badass FMC who can also use some help from her sexy, capable, tattooed, deadly men every once in a while. And the spice...perfection. I absolutely drool over a crowded car scene. I think I actually need to add that to my list of favorite microtropes now. I loved the plot, the men, and even the cliffhanger. I don't have a favorite guy because they all had their struggles and their deliciously worthwhile moments. And why choose right? I can't wait to read book 2! I'm so glad this was the bookclub pick this month!

I loved this book wholeheartedly! It was my first book by the author and definitely won’t be the last! This Why Choose, Dark retelling of the Wizard of Oz pulled on alllll the emotions! It made me giggle, sad, mad, feel allll the things and the spice was perfect. Thea is one lucky gal to not have to choose between those three delicious men. 👅

I love a good retelling! This author definitely knows what she’s doing! This is a mafia type dark Romance retelling. This is a reverse harem and the second book I believe is coming out next month February 9! Crowe is a known bad man to a lot of people, but not to Thea. He worships her like she deserves. Danny aka dandelion is hard on the outside but a big softy “lion” on the inside. Nick has his Italian roots and is very shut off with his emotions for the most part but in this story, it does show him caring for her after the torture Thea endured. If you haven’t guessed, Nick is pictured as the tin man. Crowe is the scarecrow and Danny is the lion. If you like retellings and dark romance and mafia, this book is for you.

Geneva Said hold my beer.

If you found Gen via Sun Serpent then this book is a full 365, and she’s shown us the other side of her creative brain.

Dark Oz blows us over the rainbow, into a land that’s unrecognizable from the classic story.

We instantly meet our heroine Thea, a girl who’s been given a pretty shit end of the deal we call life.
We follow her, as she navigates going from one tormentor to another & then into the arms of some guys who aren’t upstanding humans, but safer than where she’s been.

Crowe, Danny, and Nick are all drool worthy, and very quickly brought all the feelings out of me and they weren’t all great.

Last line of the book and I said “Really Gen?!”
I am so ready to read book two.

5/5 💚

Fairy tales are tales as old as time. So to be able to take a classic tale and give it a modern, wicked twist while still maintaining the core of the story absolutely blows me away! This OZ retelling by far has the most wicked twist I've read to date!

“The thoughts dancing in my head right now, Gorgeous, they’re downright devious.”

The first 5 star read of 2024! I did not want to put this book down!

I'm a sucker for a good retelling, and the fact that the wizard of Oz was my entire childhood, this was an automatic read for me! This put the most delicious twist on Oz I've ever read. It was incredible.

I found every main character likable, and each had a tragic experience in their life. It just made you want to dive deeper into their individual stories!

Danny, Nick, and Crowe are dark, twisted, and just downright delicious. I'm glad it is a why choose, because I honestly can't choose between these 3 men. I'm obsessed.

Thea (Dorothy) had the most tragic upbringing I've ever read about, but she turns out to be such a badass throughout the story! The more she is put through, the stronger she becomes!

Without giving much of the story away, I just have to say that you'll find yourself praying that Auntie Em gets what she deserves.

This was the perfect twist on Oz, with a beautiful blend of great plot and delicious spice. I can't wait to see where the story takes us next!

Dark Oz is a dark romance retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy (Thea) is off to see The Wizard to ask for a new life outside of Oz after being subjected to her Aunt Em’s abuses at her Human Trafficking farm. After killing Eastin Witcher and taking her emerald, she finds she is at the mercy of 3 smugglers named Crowe, Danny, and Nick. They all have twisted pasts but quickly fall for Thea’s strength and beauty. The guys help Thea to see the Wizard but now she needs to kill Westin Witcher and steal her emerald to gain her freedom.

This book starts out with a page of triggers, please be mindful of them. I enjoy a good retelling of a story and to get a dark retelling of Wizard of Oz was really interesting. I liked the different personalities of each of the main characters and have the multiple POV for this book helped move the story along really quickly. The smut in the book was really well done and descriptive and while the book itself was dark, the smut was not too dark. I had a hard time putting this book down and I am excited for the sequel which comes out in February!

Dark OZ

This may very well be my new favorite retelling because WOW! I am so totally obsessed with this retelling and I need the next book like 15 minutes ago! This is a spicy mafia retelling of the Wizard of Oz and it just blew my mind!! When watching the Wizard of Oz as a kid, I could never have pictured the 3 men with Dorthy as anything more than a lion, a scarecrow, and a tin man. But make them actual men, and suddenly Dorthy has options she never had before.

This book kept me guessing the whole way through. It’s dark, twisted, a little gruesome at times, and once Crow rescues Thea, completely hot and sexy!!
This story had me captivated from start to finish. After a certain point I couldn’t put it down and unapologeticly ignored everyone who tried to talk to me until the end. Will highly recommend this book. I have read many retellings, and this by far has been one of my favorites!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I just…..can we…..did that…..wait one minute…..WHAT?!?!

I truly and utterly cannot contain my obsession for this book. This book and it’s characters WILL live in my head completely rent free for at LEAST the next few months until book 2 is released.

I’m gonna be honest..I was skeptical. I saw the summary and the author’s tiktok page and I was like “you know what, I’m gonna give this a shot” and boy am I freaking glad I did.

THE BACKSEAT OF THE CAB SCENE?!?! Of all things that is holy…..

Incredible spicy scenes aside, this story was one that really impacted me emotionally. Thea’s character is one I found myself constantly rooting for. The way the author detailed the experiences from her past and how it shaped who she is today was truly inspiring to read.

The ending really threw me for a loop…it took my heart and threw it into a garbage truck driving far far away. I simply cannot wait for the second book.

I picked up this book for a 9-hour flight back from Italy, and it was the perfect choice to pass the time. I finished it in one sitting, and it was thoroughly entertaining—an easy read with enough action and intrigue to keep me flipping pages.

The plot had a lot happening yet somehow felt like it wasn’t truly progressing; the story kept me engaged, but I was left feeling like there was more buildup than resolution. However, the ending hooked me just enough that I’ll be reaching for book two, curious to see where it leads. As a retelling, this book surprised me with how fresh and enjoyable it felt, definitely exceeding my initial expectations.

This was my first time reading “why choose” romance, but it will definitely not be the last. The book is a fast-paced ride (and I mean this quite literally, since much of the *action* takes place in a YBR taxi) through a fully and carefully reimagined but still familiar and fitting Oz. As a reader who often feels forced to have to choose between my “fun” reads and my more “serious”/ “classic” reads, I absolutely love a good re-telling/re-imagining. And this is just that. A super spicy and enjoyable revision of characters and a universe that I’ve loved since childhood—with dark twists and turns, Easter eggs, hints, and clues—that all leave the reader (along with Thea) wanting more.

I feel bad about my rating. I am a huge fan of Geneva Monroe’s writing and loved the Sun Serpent Saga but Dark Oz, for me, was just…okay.

This was definitely Schmutty!!!! And, I love smut but I also love plot. I don’t feel like the plot was particularly clear in this novel. I mean, I get that Thea escaped a traumatic shituation, she has three brutish men that adore her, they are traveling to the Emerald City…I found myself bored and the pace was super slow. I wanted to know so much more about their world and I struggled to finish this book.

However, Geneva is a talented writer, she writes spice well, it seems she has a knack for writing slow burns and creates incredible banter between the characters. I also appreciated all the nods to the Wizard of Oz story as we generally know it. I think this book just wasn’t for me but I KNOW this book will be loved by many.

I received an advance reader copy and am leaving my review voluntarily.

I was clung on every word in this book and loved Thea with everything in me. Feisty little spitfire who knows what she wants and is unapologetically herself. This book puts me in mind if Black Dagger Brotherhood meets Mafia meets wizard of Oz.

Side note this is a MMMF dynamic that's spicy in all the right ways.

Once again the author does not disappoint! From the first line I was hooked and I could not put it down. Please, please check you TWs. This one is dark and delicious. It is perfect as the nights get longer.

Thea, FMC will surprise you with her grit and heart. The boys well… I dare you to not fall for them all. Make no mistake there is no easing down the road or horses of other colors here. This reimagining is what I wanted all the other retellings to be. Worth every second. So addictive I need the second book yesterday.
