Last Train Home: The Disappearance of Krystal Fraser

Rate this book
What happened to young mum-to-be Krystal Fraser on 20 June 2009 after she checked herself out of hospital to go to a party rather than await the birth of her first child?

More than thirteen years later the question remains unanswered.

No-one has reported seeing the young woman since.

Local police did not consider Krystal to be a victim of foul play, wrongly believing she was the architect of her own disappearance. The trail went cold before the homicide squad was called in and a missing person case became a murder enquiry.

Their only clues were two untraced calls from a local phone box on the day Krystal vanished.

Her body has never been found and the mystery  a maze of accusations, denials, rumours and police shortcomings that continues to divide the small Australian  rural community that was her home.

In its wake came distressed families, broken relationships and suicides.

Suspects were named and interviewed but none were charged.

Was Krystal killed by an unwilling father of her unborn child? Were disputes between drug runners the cause? Was it the result of a fall-out with one of several sexual partners?

In Last Train Home former police investigator Dennis O'Bryan delves deep into the events and people involved to reveal his discovery of new and compelling evidence.

I hope this book brings forward more information towards solving the case of Krystal Fraser. A very interesting read and also a bizarre feeling reading familiar names and places. I hope the Fraser Family get their answers very soon.

A great read - from someone that has lived around the area for years, it is so hard to believe that this crime, and the loss of a human life and her baby could go unsolved. Poor Krystal, it is just devastating to think of her final moments and how her family will more than likely never receive closure.

This account and interpretation of what may have happened to a young woman and her baby, is written from the perspective of a former police officer. It provides a level of insight not often found for true crime story telling. Small communities can be wonderful places, full of support and generosity but there are drawbacks too and this story highlights both. It also highlights the impact that prejudice and secrecy can have on investigations. It is an easy, considered and well structured read.

May this book and the impact of the coroners findings hasten the long overdue justice for Krystal, her unborn son and her family.

A confronting read. Having lived in the area and known of the case, it’s not an easy one to read. The detachment usually afforded by not ever personally knowing of the victim in true crime books is not present in this one. Krystal Fraser was clearly let down by society because of her disability and a murderer may very well get away with it. A quick, detailed read, albeit not the most skilled writing, but then it’s not a literary novel. Thoroughly investigated by someone who used to work in the Victorian Police force.

Having worked nearby at the time of Ms Fraser's dissappearance, and subsequently working in most of the locations referred to in this book, I was curious as to what more could be said beyond what had been reported. These areas are isolated indeed, and I have often wondered just what is 'got up to' out here. If O'Brien's investigation is to be believed, the investigation into Ms Fraser's dissappearance suffered, ultimately, from the stigma of her disability and social circumstance. Hopefully O'Brien's conclusions, on the back of the coronial inquest, will lead to justice for Krystal.

An excellent, informative book on the disappearance of Krystal Fraser. I learnt so much about this case and loved Dennis’ style of writing and matter of fact tone. I have been recommending this book to everyone and I hope it brings justice for Krystal and her family.
