A dull evening of computer work takes an unexpected turn for Burt when a ruggedly handsome man calling himself LoneStar asks if they can hook up later that night. Burt is skeptical, yet intrigued, when LoneStar says he has come to Hollywood from Texas after winning a competition to become the new “Marlboro Man.” Later that night Burt finds his hunky guest, who hides behind a pair of shades and has a southern drawl, sexually shy and unresponsive. Only when they go to bed together does Burt realize his hook up is not at all what he seems.
I write literary fiction that presents human beings in extraordinarily challenging crises or situations that call upon more strength and courage than my protagonists think they have. These are intensely dramatic and often suspenseful stories that also offer humor, romance (both hetero and gay) , a supernatural or mystical element, and what may best be described as spiritual or philosophical food for thought. If there is anything distinct about my books it is that they unabashedly feature gay protagonists and characters as well as heterosexuals. Hopefully that will not get me banished to the GLBTQ+ bin because the only letter that truly informs these books is "H". These are Human books readily relatable to any adult human. The only exception is my non-fiction title "Why Gay Isn't Gay But is Still Great", a title targeted to a gay male audience (although it may be of interest to others). I hope you enjoy any and all of my books as much as I loved writing them! SK
I am not really sure what this story was meant to be. It was a bit creepy and a little intriguing but nothing seemed to follow through. This story seemed more like a brief interlude that might have taken place in the midst of murder mystery serial killer type novel. I am just left with questions, Who was lonestar? What was lonestar? Was he really going to kill Burt? Was Burt imagining the crazy? What was up with the "pad" in lonestar's crotch? Sometimes when stories leave questions, it gives you something to ponder, to wish you had more to read or think about. But this story just left me unsatisfied and not caring enough about the characters to be bothered enough to hope that a follow up or some such is ever written.
As a warning to readers, this is not a romance, however there is a slight erotic edge to the story. Burt is surfing the net, hanging out at one of those hook-up websites, when he is direct messaged by a good-looking cowboy Toffin. The man claims he was selected to be the next Marlboro man and is in town to shoot it. Before long Burt has given him his address and is ready for a hook up. (Okay, as parents do we not TELL our kids not to give out their home address on-line to strangers?)
Toffin finally arrives and it’s not quite what Burt expected. He’s not jumped right away, and in fact Toffin seems remarkably shy and reticent to talk or do anything sexual. Burt finally gets him into the bedroom, but Toffin remains dressed and things get weird. He starts acting oddly and before long Burt realizes that there is something really freaky creepy going on, and he needs to get rid of the guy. He manages to figure out how to do that without setting him off and believes he’s escaped with his life.
Now I have to say I really enjoyed Burt. He’s a bit older and his own wry sense of humour about his internet activities was cute. Also his thoughts when trying to get Toffin into bed, which go from just horny and wanting a quickie to realizing there is something really weird happening were well done. My only confusion lie in exactly what Toffin was. Was he just a weird serial killer and Burt dodged a bullet? Was there a paranormal aspect as that was hinted at? Will he now have to change apartments since Toffin knows where he lives? :-)
On the whole I enjoyed it for what it is, and I do find myself liking the kind of creepy suspenseful stories that make me want to scream at the characters to run for their lives. There is no sex, there is no romance, but perhaps a little warning for people who hook up on the internet. You just never know who will come knocking at your door, and you may not be as lucky as Burt. (insert evil laughter)
This book surprised me in a good way. Honestly, I didn't expect much because of the low average rating but it's not deserved. Sure, it's not a cuddly romance and you are left hanging a bit. But I like those stories which are not clearly defined in their beginning or end. You could write more but it's intentional that there are some questions left unanswered so the reader has to think, to wonder. The fact that it turned creepy halfway through was not negative. Unexpected, but good. It's not a PWP story but a little reminder why anonymous hook ups over the internet are not the smartest idea. The writing was pretty good (I've read books by authors with 4 star ratings who didn't write as well) and I just had to laugh out loud about the "hyperventilating crotch". I'll look forward to reading something else by this author.
This short story is neither erotica nor romance -readers looking for that beware- but that is not its problem, even if the blurb might have been less ambiguous. The cynical humour of the first pages is suddenly replaced by an extremely tense atmosphere that finds the reader unprepared -not in a good way-.
I tend to agree with another reviewer that this reads like an excerpt from something longer. Writing is fine and the plot is not bad in itself, but this work seems to lack that incisiveness that is essential to any short story.
this was a very different type of book. i was expecting a happy ending... i downloaded a lot of free books and forgot what it was about. i thought that the guy being nervous was just that, not of other dreaful plans.
this is most def a book for newly gays to help realize the cations of hook ups especially over the internet
Reviewed by Max: This was a different short story(16 pages). The writing was okay, but the story didn't do it for me. I think the author was going for suspense? I lost interest less than halfway through and I had to force myself to finish it.
I think this story pretty much creeped me out. I'm sorry that I cannot even rate the writing because of my dislike for the subject matter. It scares me that this happens, and more often than people realize.
I would have liked to know what was in the guy's pants, lol. And why he was the way he was. But great writing, very good and unusual story. Will be looking for more from this author.

gave up after a few paragraphs. Very hard to read it. Starting when guy was on computer making the language difficult to get into when computer gargon.
