Hmm, I don't know where to start. This was SO good, I don't even know how to express that. I haven't read something so refreshing and REALLY enjoyed since Dance Butterfly Dance , back in March.

Obedience is an exciting romance novel that takes readers on a thrilling emotional journey. This first book in the Ties That Bind series centers around the two main characters, Chandler and Cassandra. Chandler is a mysterious aerialist, while Cassandra has been captivated by him since she was 13 years old, especially after she lost her famous parents in a fire. She finds solace in her determination to become a silk aerialist like Chandler, and years later, at the age of 25, she auditions for the Dreamers Academy, where Chandler is on the audition panel.

As Chandler becomes more than just a professional inspiration to Cassandra, she becomes his protege and TA at the school where he teaches, and the tension between them intensifies. Despite Chandler's struggle with an injury and a recent divorce, meeting Cassandra reignites his passion for the silks and for life. Their attraction grows as they showcase their skills in a live performance, highlighting Chandler's Shibari talents, and their sizzling sessions lead to an intensely hot relationship.

However, their dangerous pasts haunt their present, with Cassandra's threatening uncle and Chandler's dark and violent family. Despite the risks, they cannot stay away from each other. The circus acts and silk aerial performances provide a perfect backdrop for their story, while the Shibari scenes add a deliciously decadent and compelling aspect to the plot. Cassandra's sassy no-nonsense spark and Chandler's brooding demeanor create a unique dynamic between them.

This contemporary New Adult romance novel had an atmospheric setting with a circus backdrop and a focus on acrobats and fire performers.  I absolutely loved the whole circus atmosphere and the mafia vibes in this book, and both Cassandra and Chandler are such fantastic characters.  I listened to the audiobook version of this and appreciated the unique elements that added to the immersive experience.  If you're going to read this book, I HIGHLY recommend listening to the audiobook, it's so immersive and you will FEEL like you're there in the audience, during performances, etc. I was pleasantly surprised by the occasional musical interludes throughout the book, although some of the more explicit noises were a bit awkward to listen to.  But awkwardness aside, I cannot express how good the audiobook was.

The writing is as mesmerizing as Chandler's aerial silk performances. You'll find yourself holding your breath as Cassie gets tied up in knots in some seriously steamy Shibari scenes. The BDSM-inspired romance is refreshingly free of misogyny, and craziness, giving Fifty Shades of Greya run for its money.

The book has intrigue, action, angst-filled romance, and steamy love scenes that will entertain anyone. However, be warned that the book is a slow burn, but it's well worth the wait. The first 50-60% of the book had me completely enamored, and I couldn't put it down. I was completely captivated by the unique premise, slow-burn romance, and intriguing characters. Cassandra's journey from fan to protege was fascinating, and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next.

Overall, this is a great series opener that ends on an unexpected cliffhanger. The world-building is impressive, and the characters are well-developed. I highly recommend Obedience to anyone who enjoys the student-teacher dynamic, age gap, light BDSM, and a slow-burn romance.

5/5 🌟 4/5 🔥

"How does it feel, little papillon?" I felt the warmth of his voice against the flesh of my ear, and it sent a small shiver down my spine.
"I feel alive."

Wow. This book was... everything I could want in a book. Slow burn, circus themed, student/teacher, mystery and a bit of romantic suspense!

Cassandra has been a fan of silk aerialist, Chandler, for many years. Since the day before her 13th birthday, in fact. She's 25 now and got accepted into the school where Chandler teaches. He is definitely more... different, than what she assumed. But what part is fake and what part is real with him? And what will happen when Cassandra's past comes back to haunt her?

I knew, despite everything, I wasn’t going anywhere. He’d caught me like a little butterfly trapped in a net. His merciless papillon.

Their attraction to one another is instant - but this is a torturously slow burn novel. I don't traditionally read slow burns (I prefer the action to happen early on!) but this one called to me. I also love student/teacher romances - the forbidden aspect of this book is definitely there!

This was the perfect book for me to read right now, and I'm so glad I did. I recommend this to anyone who likes forbidden, age gap, "I've adored him since I was a child" vibes, and slow burns that get REALLY spicy. <3

Love the idea and concept but had issues with the execution.

Cassandra loves the circus, especially after seeing the silk aerialist Chandler perform. She was mesmerized and made it her goal to work with him one day. Eventually, she met that goal. Chandler was now her new mentor, but he wasn't what she thought.

The novel started off great. I was intrigued by the story and the direction it was heading. But the story lost me around the middle. There wasn't enough plot, suspense, or sense of urgency to the story. Also, I didn't like how some of the chapters ended abruptly.

Overall, not for me, but if you're a fan of age gap (teacher/student) romance and shibari, this might be for you.

***Thank you to NetGalley and Liza Snow for graciously sending me the ARC to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

My Review

I bloody loved this and it ticked every single one of my boxes I was initially so intrigued by the blurb it just sounded so fascinating and though this a new to me author I’d definitely read her again a million per cent. I was seriously impressed with this, I definitely wasn’t expecting it to be so good and it managed to surpass all of my expectations.

This had a bit of everything it had a taboo relationship at its centre Chandler was Cassandra’s mentor and professor, it also had an age gap, the heroine being in her mid-twenties and hero early forties. It was slow-burn and managed to expertly ramp up the tension until it all finally came to a delicious head and exploded in such an erotic scene. It also delivered on the romantic suspense front which subtly played out in the background. In fact, this part of the story was stealthily built and initially, I wasn’t aware it was going to be such an integral piece of the story.

The main theme of the book a circus and circus academy was such a big draw. I adored the fact that both Chandler and Cassandra were silk aerialists and the added bonus of Shibari was such a fascinating addition and also an extremely erotic experience. I liked both of the main characters and the slow-burn push-pull was brilliantly done. I was so invested in these two and as a couple, they had an adorable intensity that was incredibly endearing.

This was told from a dual POV so both Cassandra and Chandlers and the story is yet to conclude, fortunately, it didn’t end on a major cliffhanger which I was definitely glad about. But yep there’s still more to come and I definitely want to know what happens next. It was a well-written easy read with a riveting central theme and was the perfect blend of romance vs plot. I want the next book in my hands right now and can’t wait till it finally releases. This is definitely one I highly recommend reading. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of Obedience.

4⭐️ This book was refreshing read from most romances with how unique the story/plot was. I really enjoyed this book overall and it is the first in a series it seems and I definitely will want to read the next book when that gets released. This was a romance with a dash of suspense/mystery which I love in books. I really like how the suspense/mystery was slowly being revealed while the story was going on. Also, this book had so many good tropes: age gap, coach/mentor x student , with mystery. I also loved the setting being around the circus/aerial performers which I don’t get to read a lot but there needs to be more books with this. I listened to this on audio and I really liked the unique elements that made me feel really immersed in the story. I would definitely recommend this book you love these tropes and want something a little different than a classic romance.

Do you ever see a book cover and think you’re going to like the book’s vibe based on that alone?

Between that and the description of this book, I was all in on the Netgalley request!

What’s it about?
Cassandra has been training to realize her dream as a silk aerialist her whole life–ever since she saw Chandler Moreau perform when she was a child. And she’s had to overcome the death of her parents, and the arrest of her uncle–who she suspects killed her parents with a fire.

When Cassandra auditions for the School of Dreams, Chandler is one of the people on the audition panel, and he’s captivated by her. But he knows that if he shows too much interest in Cassandra, she will draw his dangerous father’s attention. So instead, he pushes her away with grumpiness, fighting the attraction blooming between them.

And it doesn’t help that Cassandra wanders into his club one night and, despite masks, the two recognize one another end up in a shibari demonstration together.

Despite the risks, Chandler can only fight his attraction for Cassandra for so long…

My thoughts:
My brain is still spinning. This book is freaking amazing. I loved every part of it. Both Cassandra and Chandler have tragic, dark, intriguing family backgrounds. The tension of will they or won’t they, paired with the forbidden mentor / student vibes, age gap, danger, and shabari. I mean, dang. Liza went all out on this one.

That cliffhanger ending though. I was listening to the audiobook and thought it had broken when it just ended on me like that. (Cue sobbing).

Seriously, this book is amazing. I loved the whole circus atmosphere, mafia vibes, and adored both characters. I even ended up falling down the rabbit hole of watching silk aerialist YouTube videos while reading this.

And! The audiobook is full cast! It is incredibly well done. I loved the surprise of music showing up throughout the book. I will say the random, um, spice noises, were kinda awkward to listen to, but I so admire the creativity.

Now, when is book 2 coming out?

LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING: the beginning of this book was excellent, and it easily might have been a four-star read. HOWEVER, I'll be picking up the sequel to see what happens.

Let me start by saying that this book was like a roller coaster ride - it had its ups and downs and left me feeling a little dizzy at the end. "Obedience" by Liza Snow is a heart-stopping romance novel that'll have you wanting to join the circus just so you can learn aerial silk and be like Chandler - the sexy, enigmatic aerialist that has inspired our protagonist Cassandra since she was 13. And oh boy, when Cassie, at the ripe old age of 25, is admitted into the school where Chandler teaches and she becomes his protege, tensions rise to the boiling point!

Snow's writing is as mesmerizing as Chandler's aerial silk performances - you'll find yourself holding your breath as Cassie gets tied up in knots (both literally and figuratively) in some seriously steamy shibari scenes. And I have to say; with its BDSM-inspired romance meet-up that is refreshingly free of misogyny, pedophilia, and craziness, this book is giving "Fifty Shades of Grey" a run for its money.

But it's not simply the steamy parts that will keep you reading. The novel "Obedience" is a breath of fresh air in the romance genre because of its original plot, which mashes up a romance with suspense and mystery. You'll feel like you're soaring into the air with Chandler and Cassie because of Snow's vivid descriptions of the aerial silk acts.

However, be warned that this book is a bit of a slow burn - but trust me when I say it's well worth the wait. The first 50-60% of the book had me completely enamoured, and I couldn't put it down. I was completely enamoured with its unique premise, slow-burn romance, and intriguing characters. Cassandra's journey from fan to protege was captivating, and I couldn't wait to see what would happen next.

But unfortunately, the last 40% of the book left me feeling confused and bored. The plot and storylines became jumbled and unorganized, and no good build-up or suspense was made. I was sifting through the pages, just waiting for something interesting to happen. And when the climax finally arrived, it was extremely confusing, boring, and predictable.

It was like watching a bad movie where you already know the ending, but you keep watching just to see how bad it can get. The last 40% of the book felt like a chore to read, and I couldn't wait to finish it.

Even with its weaknesses, "Obedience" stands out from the pack as a tale of original and invigorating romance. A narrative with aerial silk performances, a romance reminiscent of BDSM, and a touch of mystery and intrigue is a rare treat for readers. If you want a book that will make your heart race and take you to new heights, then "Obedience" is the one for you.

Just be prepared for a bit of a rollercoaster ride in terms of pacing. But hey, isn't that just like a circus performance? You never know what you're going to get!

Obedience by Liza Snow is a great start to the Ties That Bind series. I've been wanting to read more romance recently and this was a good place to start. The relationship between Cassandra and Chandler was definitely a slow burn but their passion was worth the wait. I don't normally enjoy the student and teacher trope but it worked really well for these characters. The plot was engaging and interesting. The ending was a huge cliffhanger that left me excited for the next book. I highly recommend if you enjoy student and teacher, bondage, and slow burn romance.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

WOW! Can I just say that the audiobook adds SO much to this story. At times I briefly read parts of this on ebook too, and as much as this was a GREAT read, the brilliant full cast voice overs, music and sound effects on this just take this story to another level.

Chandler's voice is just so 🔥

Check out comments for the BLURB, but this book is a spicy slow burn age gap romance with mafia vibes, a circus setting and dark secrets.

Meet -
Cassandra, who finally gets to follow her dream and train with the silk aerialist she has admired since childhood. Stirring feelings in her she hadnt expected.

Chandler, hiding secrets, he thought he found the student protege he had been looking for. He didnt expect to fall so hard.

🔥 Age gap romance
🔥 Shibari 🌶🔥🥵
🔥 Bondage / dominance
🔥 Aerial silk diplays
🔥 Mafia vibes
🔥 Circus theme

This book is spicy with underlying mafia tones. The first half of this book builds up with a slow burn romance as these two characters connect with just hints of a dark mysterious past that the two have. There is something very sensual about their connection and I loved the dual POV chapters. And some great side characters who you really connect with.

The last part of the book focuses more on the darker aspects of both their pasts coming to a pretty dramatic conclusion.

Be aware this book has 🔥🌶 🥵 and is graphically detailed. So the audiobook was quite an eye opener that's for sure 🤷‍♀️ 🤣

Look at those tropes- holy moly this one was intense. The audiobook was fantastic- thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book, it was a pleasure to listen to. The inclusion of audio clips and music along with the narration added to the atmosphere that surrounded this steamy, circus themed romantic suspense. The male narrator was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The setting and premise of a school for performers leads readers to meet Chandler, famous aerialist who teaches at the school as his professional career is beginning to wane. Enter Cassandra, student silk aerialist who becomes the new protege for her longtime idol, none other than Chandler. They both fight their instalust for each other, knowing their role and place in the circus performance world could easily be jeopardized.

As more secrets and lies unfurl, the stakes become higher and higher. A mysterious death, ties with the mafia, and dark family connections create a dangerous game for both Chandler and Cassandra. This does end on a cliffhanger, so the next read will be automatic for me!

Some of the background information/family connections of both MC’s don’t add up, so hopefully it will be cleared in the next read.
The execution of the plot was left a tad wanting, so 3.5/5 rounded to 4 for Goodreads

Taboo age gap, teacher/student, BDSM.
Romantic suspense with mafia ties.

Chandler is a famous silk aerialist, and Cassandra is his protege. Chandler has my heart. He may be a grumpy old man, but he’s my grumpy old man, ya know? He’s a control freak, and I find it adorable. What I love the most about him is his devotion. Once he’s in, he’s all in.

This is a dual POV story. You get to see the love interests meet from the MMC’s perspective, which was refreshing to me.

Throughout the story were breathtaking descriptions of aerial silk performances along with scorching hot shibari scenes. This is a bit of a slower burn, but it’s well worth the wait. 🥵

It does end on a cliffhanger‼️

If you can get ahold of the audiobook version, I highly recommend listening. Dual narration for the MCs plus additional voice actors for some of the other characters. It’s a unique immersive experience with music and *spicy* sound effects.

Disclaimer: This is a biased review. I’ve watched this story evolve throughout the rewrites as a beta reader and couldn’t help but fall in love.

I was sent a copy of this audiobook for review.

Cassandra Blackstone lost her parents in a fire at 13. The thing that kept her going was a determination to become a silk aerialist after watching the world-famous aerialist Chandler Moreau. She decides to audition for the Moreau family academy and Chandler is on the audition panel. Now 25 her interest in him grows beyond professional to an instant attraction for the older man.

Chandler Moreau is floundering while coping with an injury and his recent divorce, both leaving him questioning his future as a performer. After meeting Cassandra, her passion for the silks imbues him with a new lust for life and his aerial skills. He becomes deeply attracted to Cassandra but after she volunteers in one of his live performances in Kinbaku/Shibari skills, it is suddenly clear that he won't be able to stay away from her for long.

They are drawn into an intensely hot relationship fuelled by sizzling sessions utilizing Chandler's Shibari talents. However, they both have a dangerous past that is haunting their present. Cassandra's uncle is locked up but the threat he poses to her grows daily. Chandler's family is dark and violent and he can't escape their influence. As their worlds collide will Casandra pay for this relationship with her life?

🌟🌟🌟🌟 I loved the world that this was set in. The circus acts/silks aerial performances are a wonderful backdrop to the story and add in the deliciously decadent aspects of the Shibari scenes giving even more enticing and compelling moments to the plot. I liked both the main leads, Cassandra had a sassy no nonsense spark about her yet her naive side allowed for character growth while Chandler's broody/grumpy side lightened up as he allowed Cassandra into his world and made him feel free. This book had plenty of intrigues, action, angst-filled romance and hot love scenes to keep anyone happily entertained. The pacing in the middle was a bit slow which detracted from the intense storyline but overall, a great new series opener that ends on an unexpected cliffhanger and me eagerly awaiting book 2.

WOW!! This was so good. It had my attention the ENTIRE time. Not only is this romance centered around amazing talent. there are also moments of great suspense that will make your heart beat fast.
So, expect tension, angst, steam, thrill, suspense, and so much more.
A bit of a slowburn, things start to heat up around the 50% mark. Up until then, it is TENSION baby!!
We also have a 15 year age gap!! Cassie is 25 (turning 26) and Chandler is 40. Student/Teacher.

There's some voyeurism.. and shibari.. LORD THIS BOOK IS HOT!

This forbidden love will grasp you by the throat ;)

Cassie fell in love with the circus at a young age. She not only watched her parents participate, but the person she drew most of her inspiration from was Chandler. She instantly clung onto his control and worked her entire life up for the chance to work beside him.
Chandler is a silk aerialist and is beautiful at what he does. However, Chandler ends up getting hurt and his father thrust him into teaching silk aerial. This isn't something Chandler wants to do, so he is a bit of a grump.
Now at 25, Cassie gets on as a protege to Chandler. The two end up having this instant deep connection. Chandler desperately tries to fight his feelings because he knows his father would not approve. But the two inevitably give in and it's so hot... and now they must learn how to navigate the dangers Chandler's father has delved on them.
(insert suspense here)

The cliffhanger was brutal, I cannot wait to find out how these two are going to get through this next chapter.

Thanks Netgalley for the audio ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This is the aerial silks/acrobatics/circus romance that Infini and Amour Amour left me wanting!

Unfortunately, there is something that I cannot quite pinpoint that prevented me from enjoying this book.
If I am not mistaken, this should be Liza Snow's debut book; nonetheless, the writing style is great, captivates the reader, and is enjoyable. The plot is something for sure, there are a few dark themes that I would have appreciated more if there were written differently.

There are a few things that rubbed me in the wrong way: the fact that the heroin is broke and the hero just welcomes her in his home and caterers to her every need, and the fact that upon leaving the city, their jobs and their social circle, they were able to find a new spot in a new circus immediately, that's just pure fiction, and I like my book more realistic so to speak.

A positive note has to be said about the audiobook, I really enjoyed the added sounds and music, the final effect, with the music playing during the show or the noise of the door shutting as someone was exiting the room, were truly great.

I am now curious to find out where the story is going and how the main characters are going to resolve their differences, but I don't know if I'll be reading the next book, because it already felt like a chore finishing this one.

I was excited to read this book because it was something out of my comfort zone, but still had some mystery and romance to it. I was disappointed in the way the book hinted at family drama and background but never let the reader in on it. I understand books ending in a cliffhanger but to be left in the dark the entire book is a bummer and that is how this book made me feel.

I was fortunate enough to receive the audiobook copy and it was phenomenal especially the main male voice playing Chandler. The inclusion of music in places as well as other audio sounds was amazing! Very well done! However there is a huge problem with the audio in chapter 34 at the scene of the house fire. When Chandler is talking to the fireman both male audio clips are on top of one another. It is one of the most important points in the books and I thought maybe there was something wrong with my phone/Bluetooth/etc. so I listened to it multiple times in multiple sources and it is in fact the audio. Please try to get that fixed ASAP!

I will probably read the second book because I want to know what the heck is going on with this family but this is not a re-read for me

I received a copy ARC and all opinions are my own.

Forbidden fruit and all that in this dark student teacher romantic suspense story. The story is original and intriguing as Liza takes us a look into the world of Cirque du Lys and some bondage and the beautiful art of rope binding like Shibari.
The story is told in dual POV which gives you a better understanding of the characters and where they are coming from. Ties That Bind is full of heat and suspense. This sexy age gap new adult romance is full of emotions, with lots of angst and plenty of chemistry! The age gap is significant and the communication between them was the cause of many problems due to dark secrets.
She is plagued by a childhood tragedy and has always longed for something that for so long has been out of her reach. Now it is all in front of her and what she doesn’t know is their lives have been intertwined and there is a past that may just ruin them.
He knows it’s wrong, but he is drawn in like a moth to a flame. But with a past that is full of secrets that should never be exposed between them it is unlikely that love conquers all.
We are left with questions and a cliff hanger which I hope we get answers to in the next book.

4 ⭐️ - This book is great to read if you’re wanting a romance not like all the other ones that already exist. The plot/story line of this book are so unique, I’ve never read anything like it. This was the perfect way to start this series, and normally I genuinely do not like the first book or two in a series due to the fact that I just get bored, but this book was genuinely very good and I enjoyed it very much. This book had the perfect combination of romance and mystery, it had amazing tropes; age gap and mentor x student, if you like these tropes I definitely recommend this book. This was a very refreshing read and I highly, highly recommend if you want a break from the everyday/classic romances. Also, I loved that this was an aerialist/circus romance. I don’t read circus books often let alone one like this. If you don’t already want to read this, please add this to your tbr.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Cassandra and Chandler. As a reader, I found this book to be excellent, and I loved the buildup that was involved. Their relationship as mentor/student developed smoothly. I loved their chemistry together. It was obvious that they were well-complemented by one another. If you love steamy age gap books, I would definitely recommend this to you. Unless you want to put it down, you won't be able to. As the story progresses, a sense of suspense, sensuality, and mystery keeps the reader glued to the pages. There is a cliffhanger ending to this writing, with a plot that is quite original and unpredictable. It was a pleasure reading the author's writing style.

From the description and tags, I thought this would have a lot more steamy scenes. Even the prologue seems promising, but then nothing happens for the first half of the book. Chandler is hot and cold with Cassandra to the point that I didn't even want them to get together. If he's going to throw her out of his apartment after inviting her over, forget it.

The sort-of mystery involving Cassandra's uncle and Chandler's father wasn't that interesting until everything exploded in the final quarter of the book. Maybe if the sex and mystery had been more spread out across the whole story and ramped up more, I would have enjoyed it?

I did like that the audiobook was dual narration. It's my favorite style and helps pull you into the story.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to Liza Snow Romance and NetGalley for the copy.

I’m a huge lover of circus themes in books so I couldn’t resist picking up this book after reading the summary. My, oh my!! This one definitely took me by surprise.

The MCs chemistry was off the charts and DELICIOUS. Also, student/teacher dynamic!? Sign me up! I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I’m excited to read the sequel when it’s out.

[thank you netgalley for providing me with this audiobook in exchange for an honest review]

this book is definitely not something i think i would normally have picked up and chosen on my own but i am still so glad that i got the chance to enjoy it. the story was extremely unique. I don’t think i’ve ever heard of or read anything that was anywhere similar to this. the entire idea was so original and i loved that! it was nice to read something that was completely unlike anything i’ve picked up before. the narrators were nice and i enjoyed listening to them. some of the sound effects were a little over the top and that is probably what threw me off. i’m sure that if i would have read instead of listened i would’ve rated it higher.

I listened to the audio version of this book and finished it over a few days as the story was engaging. This was the first time I listened to an audio book that had extra elements to it as well as more than one narrator and it was a fun listen.

Wow! Amazing audiobook performance!
Not only was “Obedience” a great read - the audiobook took it to the next level! Full of adventure, mystery and romance narrators Daniel Zbel and Rapunzaroo took it to the next level!
I can’t wait to return to the circus in book 2! 🎪

slow build up to a dark climax

Very slow build up to a dark climax. Perfect setup for the next installment. Dive into the intriguing world of the circus. Immerse yourself in the world of shibari. Then combine the two with the most charismatic characters. Plenty of surprises along the way.

- Circus Backdrop
- Murder mystery

This contemporary NA romance was atmospheric with the backdrop of a circus and being surrounded by acrobats and fire.

I am not a big fan of Cassandra's narrator. I enjoyed every other aspect of the audiobook, which was so well done, but there's something about the way this narrator read that bothered me. There's a slight accent. I can't pinpoint it (Maybe midwest?) but it's there. The MMC's name is also Chandler....and for the life of me, I could not get Chandler from Friends out of my mind!! So all of the "oh chandlers" made me giggle. lolol I don't think this will bother most people though, and do really recommend the audiobook!

I think it's important to acknowledge that though there is shibari use in this story, the fact that aftercare was shrugged off (he still did it, just emphasized that he didn't care for it) should not be indicative to how BDSM should be done.

I did enjoy this one, it definitely got better as the story went on and ended on a minor cliffhanger. I enjoyed the circus backdrop to the story and the murder mystery that was really sutble at first and then punched us in the face towards the end. Maybe it was the narrator that distracted me from the story too much. I was definitely taken out of the story many times.

I'll definitely read the next book. There's just so much going on that I need to know what's going to happen.

The spice was sometimes spicy, sometimes vague. It's definitely not the main point of the story, which is nice. There's a lot of angst and I thought of giving it a 3/5 spice rating for the shibari but most of it is just too vague for me to consider it more explicit.

For the murder mystery with a side of plot fans, I think those who enjoyed books like Be Still My Heart by Emily McIntire and Sav R Miller will enjoy this one!

Big thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Obedience by Liza Snow
Format: ARC provided by NetGalley and the author, Liza Snow, who is self-publishing her debut romantic suspense novel

Haunted by a childhood tragedy that claimed the lives of her parents, Cassandra Blackstone has never lost sight of her dreams of becoming an aerialist. She has fought tooth and nail to make that dream a reality- and now, she is training one-on-one with her role model and idol of her youth, Chandler Moreau, one of the greatest aerialists of their time. It isn’t long before sparks fly between Cassandra and Chandler- but will their troubled pasts cause their dreams to catch flame?

First, I have to say that listening to the audiobook of Obedience is a singular listening experience. There are 5 different narrators working together on this book, but their voices are interwoven in each paragraph- Cassandra’s voice actor says her lines, and Chandler’s voice actor answers in his. There is music and sound effects in many of the scenes as well, which makes quite an impression on listeners, similar to a radio program. The sound effects really brought the scenes to life. I wish more audiobooks were performed this way! Additionally, the individual performances by the narrators who performed Cassandra’s (Rapunzaroo)and Chandler’s (Daniel Zbel) POVs were astounding. They were extremely talented!

I do not regularly read romance books, but I really enjoyed this book. The relationship between Cassandra and Chandler was well explored in Obedience, and their strong, willful dispositions worked well together as a couple. Obedience is an adult romance book, has all the NSFW content we look for in romance novels, with a focus on the B in BDSM. Promotional material for Obedience reveals key traits of the storyline between the MCs, and I would identify age gap, student/teacher, and grumpy/sunshine to be the primary elements of the relationship. Again, not a habitual romance reader myself, but I felt that the age gap and student-teacher dynamics were done tastefully. There is a power imbalance between Chandler and Cassandra, but it is not tied (get it) to the age difference between the two- more from their roles as graduate student/protégé and professor/trainer.

The thrilling and suspenseful components of the plot kept me engaged while I was listening, wanting to know what would happen next. At the end of the book, there are many questions left unanswered, with neither narrator revealing the whole truth of their actions. The final sequences in Obedience accelerate to a sudden end that will continue in the sequel, Discipline, that I really look forward to reading!

Bottom line: I recommend Obedience by Liza Snow to anyone who enjoys romance novels, and especially to anyone who loves a great audiobook performance! Obedience is out tomorrow, April 4th 2023, on Kindle and in paperback, and the audiobook is available on Audible now. As of today’s review on April 3rd, 2023, the pre-order price is 99 CENTS. At 493 print pages, that's a lot of book for just one dollar! Have Audible credits to use? Treat yourself to this stunning audiobook. With the experience of the full cast and special effects, its a credit well spent for a self-publishing author on her debut book.

Special thanks to Author Liza Snow for the audio-ARC of Obedience via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
