This is my first read of KG MacGregor and I'd be happy to read more.
"Sumter Point" grew on me the further I read. The first half of the book I found to be blah or rather uneventful. Not a lot happens. However, we do get well introduced to the all of the characters which gives us a payoff later.
I'll admit, despite the slow beginning, I did find myself thinking about the characters when I put the book down for awhile and I enjoyed the second half of the book much more when the leads, Beth and Audie, are able to express their feelings towards each other.
The book gets extra points for having believable drama and a fresh storyline that we don't see too often. Also, neither of the leads are rich or perfect and are really relatable. The romance is slow burn and the couple does communicate. This is an age gap romance (24 vs 32ish, I think) and a party girl vs homebody, opposites attract story.
The vibe of the read is a sweet romance that ends on a feel good note but there's a somber cloud over it due to the illness of the grandmother.
It also takes place in Tennessee which I liked.
I did have a few minor issues with the read...
Namely, what does Beth look like? Her description is "pretty" but is she short, tall, average, blonde, brunette, something else? What color eyes does she have? Is her hair long or short? There was more description when it came to Audie but I have *no* idea what Beth looks like.
Another thing I noted, and this is completely down to personal preference, was that there's a decent amount of dialogue that has no descriptions of physical action, reactions, tone, or feelings and this is something I missed. For example, there might be a long exchange between Beth and Audie that's just straight up dialogue tags but I don't know for certain how either feels, if they've made a face, spoken in a different tone, where they are in the room, that kind of thing. I had to fill in the blanks. This is okay but I think I feel closer to a story when I get the more subtle details.
Also, in case this is a pro or a con, there's a large amount of marijuana smoking in this story. It gets pulled into Audie's character arc.
And finally, the actual formatting of the story was jarring. I think that may have more to do with Scribd's e-reader app but transitions were butted up against each other so I'd be reading about Audie and suddenly realize I was now reading about Beth and vice-versa with no distinction that there's a change in scene.
However, whatever minor gripes, I really fell for the characters and appreciated the unfolding of all of the relationships. I liked the book and would recommend to romance fans.
I rate this in the high 3 stars.
