Previously published under Kenley’s pen name, Haley Ryan, Dragon Hunted is the second book in an urban fantasy trilogy featuring snarky dragons, dangerous fae, and sweet, slow-burn romance… An action-packed read that’s perfect for fans of K. M. Shea, Shari L. Tapscott, or Annette Marie!

What’s worse than a fae prince with murder on his mind?
How about a family reunion…
But with dragons.

The good news is, I survived the murderous fae prince. I also found my aunt and embraced my inner dragon. Everything should be going great, right?

If only. My aunt has disappeared again, I haven’t heard from Draven in months, and the Fae Court wants to question me about their prince’s death. To make matters worse, there’s a gargoyle terrorizing my customers, my savings are running out, and I may lose the bookstore unless I can find a second job.

So of course, that’s when fate decides I have it too easy, and my path suddenly collides with the one person I’ve been running from for nineteen years—also known as “Mom.”

My whole life, I’ve been told my family wants me dead, but the truth turns out to be a lot murkier than that. The only way to get to the bottom of all the lies is to take a little field trip to the dragon enclave, where I’ll be surrounded by stubborn, suspicious, short-tempered lizards, most of them not very happy to find out I’m still alive.

I’m about to get a crash course in dragon politics—which is just like regular politics, but louder. And with fire.

Lucky me.

This book starts out with a big reveal off the bat, and it just gets more gripping from there! I gobbled it up in a single day, and I think this one might be my favorite of the series, mostly because

Draven and Kira's romance just deepens and grows in this book, even as the stakes grow higher!

I especially loved the whole dragon shifter thing! And the dragons in this book! Eeep!

I just can't write a coherent review, especially since I'm avoiding spoilers. But it's really good! If you love urban fantasy, especially with lots of humor, then you'll want to read this series!

We got to see a lot more of the dragons, which is always great. I liked the various colors and abilities they have, plus learning more about Kira's past. The overall plot was okay, but things moved a bit fast and I think this could have been longer and more detailed.

This is even better than book one! We dive right into Kira’s continued adventures and boy do things heat up (pun intended, heehee) when she meets the dragon shifters and her family after all this time.

Kira has grown in leaps and bounds from book one and I love how she dares to stand up for herself and her friends even if everyone seems against her in one way or another. Draven grew too though it’s more subtle as we only see him through Kira’s eyes, but he’s still so broken and precious I just want to give him a big hug and tell him everything’s going to be okay. And these two are adorable together! I love how they’ve grown from friends to something more with such a strong bond, so much so I ached for them as they struggled to find themselves in this relationship despite the forbiddenness of it. Kira’s brothers are also the best and I love their inclusion and dynamic with Kira and even Draven, though I did take a bit to warm up to Callum. I’m not fond of Mom though—just what is her deal?!?!

This series is very character focused but there are some deeper plots and politics unearthed here that were a lot of fun to discuss and theorize over with my family, some of which we were actually right about! And the ending while wrapping up nicely did nearly kill me with what Kira and Draven are forced to face and do, and if the author doesn’t give them a happy ending where they can be together I’m gonna riot.

Very intrigued to see how this is all going to end!

I only made it through book 2 of the series. It was a bit too steamy for my taste, and a little too… corny? I started it hoping for a KM Shea Magiford feel, which it has, though a slightly less funny and engaging version. Book 1 was pretty good, but book 2 lost me with excessive ogling over the male romantic interest (like near nonstop), and the story, relationships, and interactions seemed to get progressively more amateur as it went. It’s time for me to move on…

Content (1&2):
There are a few “light” swear words, but not many. The romance is steamy, though doesn’t cross the line into spicy (it’s the MC’s descriptive and lustful thoughts more than the actual physical contact). There’s some violence, but it’s not excessive. There’s no mention of faith or God.

While I still enjoyed the book it was a bit sloppy in many ways. I could never understood why she wanted to back to her life that she kinda lived. She was only really having "foundfamily" for 4 months.. and those people she will do anything for we never got to see a real camaraderie. So it felt so unrealistic that she would choose those strangers over her family.

Also it was stupid her fight for freedom but never giving a chance to really know what like among them would be.

It just all felt like so much conflict in her head more than in reality and put me off, of liking her. I believe it's because a lot of telling and not enough showing that makes me feel this way about everything.

Despite that, I enjoyed her brothers and Skye, loved Draven he is amazing, and the bond they formed and how they chose each othe

I still liked like the book and want to finish the series.r.

Great story and character growth

This was definitely a connecting book in a trilogy, but I loved seeing Kira’s growth into herself, learning about the world around her, and deciding who she wants to be. It was also great to see how (most) of her family welcomed and respected her, the way a family should.

There was some teenage angst in places (not my favourite type of literature) but it was great to see Kira develop and some interesting reveals where some elements from the previous book fell into place.

DNF. I still give it 3 stars, as I read and sort of liked the first book at least a bit. But this one took everything I disliked in the first, to the next level. Too many stumbling around, contrived situations, the writer telling us who and what the main character is, then showing us the exact opposite. She "should", but "don't" situations. Sorry, but if she never do the "should" but always the "don't", then it means you're not the person you think you are or is described to us. You're the opposite. And no amount of telling us will change what we SEE you doing.

I seriously disliked the whole setup of the dragon-family. She feared them all her life and within a couple of hours of knowing them, go to live with them? After her mother wanted to protect her, so she send her away from them? Now you're going there FOR protection?! Not flying in my eyes, sorry.

Her brothers are "hot"? And she repeatedly tells us so? Not attractive or gentlemen or kind, no, HOT. Eeeuuuww. Eeuuww. Eeeuuuww.

She is now employing and friends with the gargoyle that LOCKED HER UP for 10 days and FORGOT TO FEED HER????

When she was attacked in her house in the first book, she fought back. I hated the fact that a male had to "come and rescue her", but at least she fought back, because as a dragon, this was her LAIR and she was attached to it. Now she's attack again in her house, and she immediately FLEES???? Really??? No courage, no this-is-my-lair-and-I'll-protect-it-with-my-life this time? A dragon that prefers to FLEE. It just didn't gel and felt like a setup to get her into the dragon lair. But not for one moment did she feel paranoid about the chain of events, even after believing they're out to kill her HER WHOLE LIFE.

At that point, I realised, this series isn't for me.

It's an easy read. Kinda gross at times because Kira sounds rather lusty over her brothers several times... yeah, I could've done without that.
I'm also not a fan of breaking the fourth wall. And while it doesn't happen often, it's awkward for me. It reminds me that I'm here and not in the world I'm reading about. It certainly didn't help that every time it occurred, it was really immature commentary.

Things move pretty fast in this one. The almost immediate connection with her siblings was really jarring. I didn't feel like they'd all be so comfortable with each other the way they were. Kira seemed to know all of their quirks after meeting them once, and well, that isn't smooth. It's bumpy and sticks out, and it just ruins the flow.

I did like the relationship with Draven. This builds the way I expected her family dynamics to build. Much more believable. I also liked that they talked. They communicated. Even when Kira gets upset, she thinks and considers more than just herself. She's, for the most part, a very level-headed character. It made the explanation for bronze dragons fitting for who she is.
Kira's growth is also good. She's not bratty or stupid. And she seeks to correct her ignorance.
The fighting for peace thing is overdone and lackluster, but the side plots are okay.

This still feels very YA, with the exception of a relatable character that does more than just throw tantrums.

I hate going into a book wanting to like it and just finding it so…blah. There’s a lot of potential in this one but there’s never enough focus on actual character development or even the development of relationships between characters. The plot is a little on the thin side (politics, ugh) and it felt a lot longer than it had to be because of all the whiny dramatics and just how young all the characters felt. Kira’s naivety is expected but that made some of her actions seem just sort of trite? That’s maybe not quite the word I want but it’s what I’m going with.

I’m going to read the last book if only so I can read how Callum achieves the position he has in his series because I want his backstory more than I care about Kira’s.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is book 2 of 3

– this is told from Kira’s point of view

– there are about 11 curse words

– there are multiple instances of Kira seeing a guy’s chest (as he can’t wear a top & shift properly)

– there is some fantasy violence

Review:

I’m really enjoying the development of the story in this trilogy! (Forewarning, this review/summary will be a little bit spoilery as Kira discovers some new things in the very beginning of the book.) I loved that Kira finds out that she has siblings and that they bond pretty quickly. I loved that her brother’s were so protective of her after barely having known her (as she is now). I loved that we got to see more of what life is like as a dragon shifter (or rather, what it should have been for Kira) and what their relations were to other supernaturals. I loved that we got to see more of Kira & Draven (and that a romance was developing!). Some of my favorite scenes/moments included: Kira hanging out with the relatives close to her age, practicing for the fight, the plot twist towards the end, the discovery of new powers, Hugh (the gargoyle), and Kira & the club owner’s family-like relationship that developed.

Summary:

After Kira and her friends discovered the person behind the shadow creatures and put a stop to them, Kira expected life to go back to being at least somewhat normal. But things don’t always go the way we expect them to. Instead of a normal life with her aunt and pets, Kira gets to continue wondering where Aunt Morgan could have gone, she inherits a gargoyle at the shop, and discovers that maybe those she thought she was being protected from actually wanted her to be safe and had thought they lost her for good. With new information and someone else after her, Kira travels to the dragon’s home in search of more answers. But when danger follows her there, there is more at stake than just her life. Will Kira be able to wade through the mess of lies to get to the truth even if it means changing her perspectives?

Unlike the first book in the series, this one took me a LONG time to get through. It wasn't holding my interest. I read the first book, and enjoyed it immensely; even saying it was the best Urban Fantasy book I'd read in a long time.

The second book started off great with the addition of Hugh. Kira, Hugh, Chicken and Waffles, it was a great dynamic, all we needed was Draven. Once Kira left the book store to go to the dragon enclave things drastically turned for me. I wasn't keen on her dragon family. The family relations didn't seem realistic at all. Part of my dislike for the alphaholes was Kira's reaction to them. She went on quite a bit about how hot they were and that put me off, they being her brothers and all.

Draven didn't show up until halfway through the book, and that hurt the story for me. Once Draven returned things started to pick up a bit, but by then it took me quite a while to get back into it, and even then I spent a lot of time skimming.

Burning questions, who was the black dragon from Book 1? Finally get that answer at 90% in. Why do Kira's tears burn? Why does Kira's fire burn other dragons? Why is she different? I assume it has something to do with her father's genes, and very little has been said about her father. I think the author should have focused on these abilities far more, but I guess they're being held back for the next book in the series. Why blow out a puff of smoke if you can rain down hellfire?

What would have made this book more enjoyable to me is if they stayed out of the boring enclave, and if Draven remained a part of the entire story. As great a character as Kira is, she really needs her sidekicks.

The books are well written, and I'm okay with the slow progress, but at the end of the day I just really didn't enjoy the enclave or Kira's family.

Book 2 in this series did not disappoint!

Read if you like:
* Clean Urban Fantasy (some fantasy violence)
* Spunky Heroines
* Single POV (told from Kira's POV)
* Second Book in a Trilogy (must be read in order)
* Great for fans of K.M. Shea's Magiford Series and Shari Tapscott's Obsidian Queen Series

I never know what to expect when going into the second book in a series. Will it be as good as the first? Will it introduce new characters that I love? Will the story actually progress? Will it leave me wanting to continue the series? The answer to all of these question is YES!!!

The majority of this book takes place in the dragon enclave where Kira gets a swift introduction to what her life would have been like had she not been hunted as a child. I don't want to give away too much, so I will just say that Kira learns a lot about dragons and their place in the supernatural world. We also get to learn more about Draven as we watch their relationship progress. Best of all, we get to meet Kira's brothers! The only drawback for me is the single POV, I really wish we got Draven's POV along with Kira's.

Favorites:
* Kira training with her brothers and Draven
* Discovering New Powers
* Kira's Brothers (They need their own series!)
* Faris
* Hugh

This was a fast paced fun read. Kenley answered a lot of the questions from the first book and still left us wanting more. I'm am a huge fan of this series and am excited to see how this trilogy ends!

*For those who would want to know: there is some cursing in this book, which is not the norm for one of Kenley Davidson's books (maybe 10 instances).

* I received an ARC of this book from the author, however, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I LOVE THIS SERIES

The Dragon of 23rd Street series by Kenley Davidson is chock full of humorous phrasing that has me unexpectedly barking out delighted laughter, feistiness from the heroine, and outrageously decisions that stun EVERYONE including me, and spicy dialogue among every layer of this masterful intercultural mix of leaders, followers, backstabbing betrayers, and lying power players among the shape-shifting, elemental, and far courts - all played out as they try to survive and thrive on modern US soil. I've burned my way through the first two books in less than 24 hours and intend to scorch my way through the next one (and anything else Kenley produces) immediately. Oh, I've laughed so much I annoyed my daughters and husband, ached as a mother and sister for so many of her characters, and had my expectations flipped on their head so often. I am honored to continue to observe Kira's response to the world-changing information she continues to have thrown into her life. Buckle up. It's going to be rough and exhilarating.

more like 3.8 stars!

this book started off with a bang (very different than the last book) and I LOOOOOVED kira's brothers. they definitely made the book for me, and i loved how they each had such different personalities and vibes yet the one thing they were so similar on was their love for kira. i loved how much they loved her and affirmed her and comforted her and was really tried integrating themselves into her life to make up for lost time. i really liked how there was no hesitancy-- they just steamed right through her life and i loved when they would remind her that they loved her. i really liked this book because we're placed in a whole new setting and her brothers are her guide. i love the revelation with draven and how her brothers begrudgingly learn to share their sister with him. kira's mother i'm on the fence about but, once again, kira's brothers (all of them) and draven were really the star of this book. appreciated how much kira came to be her own, especially at the end, and it was fun getting to discover her heritage and what she's capable of.

I really love this series. The humor and feel with all the different species of magical creatures really reminds me of Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series, just without the spice. I cracked up several times, especially at Hugh. OMG the thought of this little gray gargoyle-man in some kind of loin cloth wearing frilly robes to watch TV in with his little hairless cat was hilarious. I also loved that Kira found her dragon family. The fact that she has 3 older brothers who love her so much and are protective of her is so special for her coming from thinking her family wanted to kill her. Also, I am the youngest of 4 siblings with 3 big brothers, so I really identified with their bond. And lastly of course, Draven is a great love interest. I love how much he respects her and can see in her her strength that others, even she, can’t see. Can’t wait to see how this concludes in the 3rd book.

totally worth reading late into the morning!

The second book brings up a notch. Really, some mystery unravels but plenty is still full of questions; adventure and drama are brought to a new degree, and romance is full of angst.
Plus add finding worth, learning to see light amidst difficulties, realising what values most, and issues of family and abandonment and love “just because”.

It’s clean but not sweet and wholesome: a bit of body objectifying, description of male chest, and a kiss but nothing else. Emotions are galore, though.

Also, if issues of abandonment, family dynamics, or violence are a concern, please be aware that these topics are brought up front and center but done in a respectful manner.

My favorite part is that the characters mature, especially FMC. We see the changes she goes through, things she embraces, and issues she learns to stand up for.

Plus humor.
Well done, indeed.

Kira isn’t sure what is going on, she survived the fight with the fae prince but hasn’t seen Draven since. The gargoyle from the princes’ castle is now living in her bookshop and her aunt is still missing.
But out of nowhere her mother shows up, it seems she has been lied to her whole life, her family doesn’t want her dead – they sent her into hiding for safety. She’s not only wanted but she is the dragon princess.
Now she has to get used to a loving family and the murky dragon politics. Add to that a summons to the fae court about the fae prince and discovering that Draven is in the dragon court on a diplomatic mission.
Again, a lot happens in this book, a lot of emotions to figure out, and the danger from other dragons.
There is action, but not a lot of battles, there are surprises and humour. There is still the ongoing mystery of the aunt’s disappearance, it may be more than it seems.
A thoroughly enjoyable, quick read.

This book starts out with a bang - getting to know Kira's family and all that it means for her going forward. I loved that Draven appears early on in this one and there is definitely major progress made in the relationship between Draven and Kira, as well as new and intriguing aspects of both Draven's shifter abilities and Kira's. More is also revealed about Morghaine and her history with Kira and her relationship to Kira's dragon family.

There are also new revelations about the various types/colors of dragons and how that impacts their abilities --as well as much about dragon politics and how Kira will play into that.

There is still much to tell about how things will ultimately come about for Kira, Draven, and her family. I already am wondering if we will be reading future stories on her brothers (who are delightful).

The audiobook version is also very well narrated.

The book overall was good. I had some issues with Kira's 19 years being treated as if she had lived forever and was losing so much of an established lifestyle. Obviously, discovering a dragon family was going to mean she would not be acting like a human anymore. Parts of this were quite YA with less than "adult' reasoning, constant comments about how wonderful the men's chests looked and how hot they were. When Draven returns, she pretty constantly obsesses over him, to the point of my skimming through the pages. Some changes for all characters. Some reveals that were not that surprising. Lots of possibilities for Kira's abilities and future planning. I'll finish the trilogy, but not in any hurry.

Well, it both gets better and worse from the first book. The story gets more complicated, and an awesome new side character gets screen time. The gargoyle is hilarious. Unfortunately, the family drama was so unrealistic that it pulled me out of the fantasy world.

The obvious hint drops of one of the main mysteries just made me feel our main character is getting dumber in this second story. For a girl who does nothing but read books, she is not good at picking up clues and plot twists.

The love story takes two steps forward and one step back. It's feeling dragged out at this point. Not that I want instalove, but ovrr 16 hours in and we can't even knowledge that you like the other person. And these dummies are gonna save the world??? Goddess help us 😅

Couldn’t put it down!

I’m quickly falling in love with this world, these characters, and this series! Magic, danger, intrigue, mystery, romance, friendship, family, adventure —basically everything I enjoy was wrapped up in this story, and I couldn’t put it down. Kira is still such a favorite protagonist, but I also loved many of the new characters (as well as the old ones!) that were in this story. Many twists and turns in the plot and I honestly am planning on diving right into the third book after this one to find out how it all concludes. Definitely another great addition to this series!

The first two books are a fun, lighthearted read. They feature a clever heroine, some quirky supporting characters, and humorous banter. I know that sounds like the highest cliche, but after reading some truly terribly written characters, terrible narration and conversations, I conclude that pulling the tropes off well is a talent.

The plot moved right along in both books, and even when you knew the main character was being blind to some obvious things, the author didn’t let her stew in self imposed ignorance for long. Which was refreshing.

The third book is a different story…but that’s another review.

A great sequel.

This is another solid urban fantasy read and a good continuation building on book one’s events.
The new character additions to this book were awesome. Kira’s brothers stand out in particular as well developed and very lovable additions to the world. Draven continues to be a great love interest to fill in the romance subplot as well.
The overarching greater story nicely progressed in this book and the ending is making me eagerly await the next book.
This book’s honourable mention goes to Hugh the bookstore gargoyle for comic relief. Hilarious addition!

‘Dragon Hunted’ is book 2 of ‘The Dragon of 23rd Street’ and shoud be read in order. Kira finds herself with contradictions. Finding it hard to figure out who to trust, she is surrounded with a new family, is unsure of her aunt’s loyalty and is confused about a missing her new ‘friend’. Trying to comes to terms with her new abilities and wondering how her old life will meld with her new one keeps Kira literally up in the air. I look forward to reading how Kira adapts to all the new situaltions she is having to handle in book 3.

Coming of age stories are still not my thing, but this was a decent installment of the series. I wish that there was a lot less "Oh my gosh, check out his pecs!" inner monologue, but I find that that kind of goes hand in hand with the coming of age thing, so I can't nitpick about that since I knew about it coming into this second book.

Overall this was a solid YA fantasy read and a nice way to pass the afternoon. It's not too taxing on the brain and there is no OP drama to speak of.

Brilliant, all around amazing! No middle book syndrome here. Secrets are uncovered and family trees are unveiled. Not to mention an epic ending. This is an urban fantasy adventure with dragons, found family, friendship, romance, and so much more. Beyond excited for the audiobook release of the third instalment: Dragon Crowned by Kenley Davidson.

Love love the audio. It’s a paranormal one. Cris dukhart nailed it
The heroine is a dragon living in Oklahoma. More human than a dragon.
She meets her mate the bond building little by little. Her mate is a Gargoyle. A son of the fae king and a Gargoyle high court.
There is elements ( Earth , Fire and Wind ) a wolf shifter , a goblin and a hell cat 🐈 shadow beasts , and pixie .
Little does the young dragon know she was kidnapped , shes a female daughter of the dragon queen . She’s a dragon that will be haunted because of her skin .

Gripping, Heartfelt, and Fun

Dragon Hunted grips the reader with its multi layered plots, relatable feelings, snarky humor, big heart, and its many twists and turns. The story is full of non stop revelations, mysteries, action, and clean romance. It offers a unique take on the discovering you’re the heir to the leader trope. I liked how the book explored navigating a variety of relationships and learning how to claim agency and build trust in each of them. I deeply enjoyed reading this book and am so excited to go and start the third book in the trilogy.
