The zombies have risen, the world has spiraled into chaos. Small pockets of survivors continue to struggle each day to survive. See the world through Steve's eyes as he tries to balance the duties of leading a band of survivors while caring for a young, Hispanic orphan girl. Ride along with a band of self-professed "zombie-geeks" who are discovering that living through the apocalypse is vastly different than watching it on television. Peek in at horrifying shapshots of men and women...good and bad. This is- Revelations
Tucked away in the Pacific Northwest with my wife Denise, a Border Collie named Aoife, a guitar collection, and an increasing number of aquariums sporting a variety of fish (cichlids are my new favorites), I live for football season when I can cheer on the Oregon Ducks and be disappointed by my Seattle Seahawks once again. I am a fan of Cookie Monster, KISS, and Dr. Who (along with most things British).
As a person who always dreamed of writing as well as one completely enthralled by all things zombie, it is hard to believe that I never once considered writing in the genre. It is true. I wanted to be more “mainstream”. The first novel I actually wrote is titled Dakota (as Todd Brown). It is about a pair of DEA types tossed back in time to just prior to the start of the Civil War. They are in Charleston, South Carolina, and one of them is an African-American.
The zombie thing really started when I wrote a short for a college Creative Writing class. The teacher, Ms. Bose, pulled me up and told me I had an obvious love for the subject and a real talent for the style. I decided to give it a shot.
The first thing I cobbled together was Zomblog. I wrote it as a warm up for the project I had brewing in the back of my mind. It is a journal account of the apocalypse. The funny thing is that it was never intended to be published. A few things happened and it ended up being presented to me as a gift in book format by my wife for a Christmas present. There was something I will never forget about holding the copy of that book in my hand the first time. Because it gained a readership, and those readers asked for more, I made it a trilogy (Zomblog, Zomblog II, and Zomblog: The Final Entry). It is also because of those fans that I have returned to the Zomblog universe and just released the sixth (and FINAL) book in the series on Halloween of 2013: Zomblog: Snoe's Journey. I freely admit that I will sellout my plans to write what the fans ask for.
I really want my DEAD series to be what I am known for, and in the last year, it has really taken off. However, I will say that with the release of the fourth book in the DEAD series (DEAD: Winter), the numbers started to pick up beyond my wildest dreams.
The DEAD series (DEAD: The Ugly Beginning, DEAD: Revelations, and DEAD: Fortunes & Failures, DEAD: Winter, DEAD: Siege & Survival, DEAD: Confrontation, DEAD: Reborn) is scheduled to be a 12 part epic series.
It is told in three rotating chapters. One is from the first person perspective of Steve Hobart, a man thrust into the role of leader for a group of survivors struggling to keep alive. One chapter follows a group of four self-professed zombie “geeks” who initially believe that the zombie apocalypse would be fun and soon discover that it is nothing like the movies. The third of the rotating chapters is called “Vignettes” and is a series of snapshots from all around the world. Some of the vignettes are single chapter episodes, others are continuing threads that carry on for several chapters. A few are merged into the Steve story or the Geek story line.
Last year,I began my horror/comedy series, "That Ghoul Ava" and have found it to be my new guilty pleasure.
What can I say? If somehow you weren't hooked after Dead: The Ugly beginning, you have to be after this one.
I'm thrilled the author stuck to his guns against the biggest complaint - the amount of characters and perspectives. This is easily one of my favorite parts of the book - you're not just getting a story & perspective from one person, you're getting it from many, and they're VASTLY different. It may seem confusing at first, but as you begin to understand each person's personalities and nuances, it's not difficult at all. This adds so much flavor to an amazing story.
I'm not much of a reviewer - I'm just Jane Average who has a fanatical love for all things horror - but I can't say enough good things about this series and this book. It's not so much a zombie horror story as it is a piece on humanity, adaptability and human behavior. It's also quite realistic and brutal. I'm sure we would all like to believe in times of crisis, our fellow man would band together, but there are always those who take advantage of chaos, and it's not pretty. Sometimes, it's downright disgusting. But the end of the world won't be pretty, and it would be a pretty boring series if it was sugarcoated.
The story is fascinating, flows fantastically, and many (like myself) found ourselves finishing this in one sitting, despite the length. It's an extremely mature look on human survival. Todd Brown has an amazing style, and you should keep your eye on him (and read his other offerings from May December Publications).
I was thrown a little by the covers. I thought they might be some of those silly unbelievable zombie books that I'm sure anyone that loves this genre, has come across. But I was pleasantly surprised! I have really enjoyed the 2 I have read so far. I'm totally involved with the characters and can't wait to start book 3. Thanks Todd for a very enjoyable series!
This book was problematic for me in a number of ways.
The most egregious problem was the sickening way women were treated in the book. In a zombie book I expect a lot of violence, but I don't expect there to be as much violence against women (and young girls) as there is against the walking dead. Women getting treated as a commodity to be sexually exploited certainly isn't a new theme in apocalyptic stories, but none I've read have been quite as bad as this. There were no less than 4 women, or groups of women, who were in awful, abusive, exploitative situations in this book, some which were revisited a number of times. The whole thing just made me feel gross and was enough to make sure Dead: Revelations is the last book I read in this series.
If you can get past this (that's a big if), you're left with a typical zombie story with too many characters to keep track of and ham fisted pop culture references.
I gave it 2 stars because it does keep you turning the pages.
I did a review on the first book , “Dead: The Ugly Beginning” a few blogs back and it was then that I fell in love with this series. However, I was hesitant to read the second book in the series because I was sure it wouldn’t measure up to the first. How could it? The first book was almost perfect in every way and I had a hard time putting it down! If I could have gotten my hands on an I.V. line and a catheter, I wouldn’t have put it down at all. But curiosity got the better of me and I read the second book … in 10 hours. TW Brown did it again.
I really loved the second book for the fact that we get to know some of the characters in the first book better. Brown took a handful of people from the first book, some that are my favorites and some that I wish would die a slow death, and expanded on them in this book. In Dead: The Ugly Beginning, the world has gone crazy. Brown rides that wave of chaos and frenzy and brings the reader along for the ride. It’s like being in the middle of a gigantic storm in the middle of the ocean; the boat has sunk and the reader is just hanging on for dear life. Every chapter brings more nervous energy, more horrible surprises, more death and destruction. In this second book, the storm has blown over, but the circumstances have not improved. Just like the characters, the reader is just drifting along in the middle of the ocean, still hanging on to a piece of the wreckage, and wondering if anything will ever be normal again.
Dead: Revelations is all about adjusting to a dystopian world. It’s about finding out exactly who your friends are and who you need to watch your back around. It’s about learning to survive, making plans, and trying to find solutions while still protecting the precious ones that have survived the storm with you. It’s about ordinary people becoming reluctant heroes and having to make the tough choices when no one else steps up. It’s about finding out that some people actually thrive on the chaos and it turns them into monsters. At the end of the book, I was left with a yearning to read more. I had grown even closer to some of the characters and just had to know what would happen to them next. Brown is not above killing off characters that you are sure will make it to the end by throwing in a shark or two just when you think everything is safe.
Another aspect of this book that really got my attention is that Brown tells part of the story through a zombie’s perspective! I have never seen or heard of that before. The reader gets to see this new world through the zombie’s eyes and feel what it feels. It really helped to answer some questions that I had such as how the zombies know when a live person is near by and do they have any human feelings left? Can they think? Do they realize what is going on?
So, all in all, this book was just as brilliant as the first and I was not disappointed with any part of it, other than it had to end. Thankfully, there is only one week left to wait for the third book’s release! I will be doing my happy dance on December 15th! I think that what I have enjoyed most about reading this series is that I have found another author to add to my MUST READ EVERY BOOK THEY WRITE list. Trust me, this list is a very short one and it usually takes me a reading a slew of books by an certain writer before I make that decision. TW Brown managed to join after only two. Well done, sir!
Book 2 in the series. This book took off right away from the first book. It didn't take very long to connect with all the characters again. Mr. Brown has an amazing talent for building characters and then adding challenges. The zombies are not the forefront of the story, It's the people and how they adapt and cope. And sometimes the the bad guys aren't zombies too! I really love these books and can't wait to get my grubby little fingers on all the rest of the series! Plus you can't beat the price!
I read the Kindle version in January 2013 and just finished the audio version. After all this time and all the zombie lit I've read, this remains my favorite zombie series. My rating for this book remains a 5.
Mr. Brown writes vivid descriptive scenes with lots of action. But it's the character driven emotional impact that keeps me reading.
TW Brown's "Dead" series is one of the best that I have read. It's up there with Rhiannon Frater, D.J. Molles & J.L Bourne. All of these have books that I've had difficulty putting down and I could happily re-read their books.
The DEAD series is a must read!! I love all of the books!! And maybe that's not a good thing because of all of the death involved but what can I say I'm hooked!!
I am excited to rejoin Steve and his survivors, the geeks and their rescued girl Heather. I like the vignettes also, a good snap shot into the worse and the best of humanity.
DEAD: Revelations: DEAD, Book 2 begins with Steve and his group leaving the security of serenity base to find they’re lost friends. While it sounds like a typical scenario, the sequence of events up to and after their leaving makes it not only plausible, but like something I would do. I really enjoy the character building T.W. Brown does here, I find myself rooting for the good guys.
They eventually run into a predicament where Steve’s leadership skills are put to the test, not only in the future but also immediately. He allows another group of survivors join up with them even though there is a child that has been bitten. I know what you’re thinking because I was thinking the same thing, that is the first thing you DON’T do in a zombie apocalypse. But think about it, could you pick between a whole group of survivors starving or telling them they would have to finish off the child first? Steve did what I would’ve done and put it off for later, unfortunately his adopted orphan Talia was caught off guard by the infected child.
There are many vignettes throughout, which are basically mini stories inside of the real story. It is just my opinion but these got a little disturbing, even for me. We also get to meet a band of zombie geeks, who have to leave one their one behind because of a bite, more about them in a little bit.
The two groups meet up in the end and we are left dying to know what they will do with this new immunity information. As I listened to this I found myself really wanting the good guys to come out on top. The switching from group to group and vignettes can be a bit confusing, but a mix of good plot line, good character building, and good narration made it well worth rewinding once in a while.
Then there is Kevin and his group of geeks. They manage to rescue a teen super star, her senator mother, and pregnant sister, only to get robbed at gun point by Shaw and his gang. The three of them escape, and rescue another girl from a sick psychopath. One of them gets bit and they put him down, but in the meantime they are waging a war against Shaw trying to re rescue the females. In the middle of all this the guy who got bit is apparently immune and returns.
Like the first book, this is pretty decent for zombie lore. I like that the story follows several groups. It allows for the passage of time between stories to feel like switching channels, rather than the author skipping over time frames because it was too difficult to write the transition. The meta "if this was a movie" comments mostly serve the author pointing out the differences between media and the translation problems between media. Also, it serves as justification for the killing off of characters and a reminder of the egocentric biases we are all subject to. Misogyny and sexism prevail, unfortunately.
T.w. brown has created a long list of characters to love and hate and feel sorry for. I am enthralled with the story and characters. Kevin has increasingly become a favorite as well as heather and Teresa. Love that he has created different point of views from good people and bad. I think he has created a world that if this happened the situations could happen such as with Garrett. I love this series keep them coming!
I'm sorry, but the way most of the women are treated brings this book down TERRIBLY. Yeah, I get it, crazy psychos love to torture and rape women. The only reason I'll continue reading those books is because I truly like Steve.
TW Brown’s Zomblog series started me down the Zombie road, and The Dead series does not disappoint! I’m a HUGE TW brown fan and look forward to experiencing every one of his stories. The Dead series is action packed, horrifying, tragic, and just so freaking realistic. Almost impossible to put down, on more than on occasion I snuck out to the kitchen in the middle of the night to read a couple more chapters. Just when you think you've seen humanity at our absolute worst, we kick it up a notch and get far worse! I was totally bummed when it ended, but then I remembered the Snapshot series and immediately perked -up. READ THIS SERIES!!!! You will NOT be disappointed!!! Highly Recommend!!!
I have been violently upset about these stupid zombie books to the point where I started enjoying going to work and hating coming back to my car for audiobook commute. I have unprecedented abilities to suspend disbelief but this author REFUSES to work with me here bro I want to be on your side !!!! "let's bring in scientists to this book" OKAY BRO THEN DO SCIENCE DONT JUST KEEP SAYING SHIT !!! oh my lord. I started having zombie nightmares and bit my girlfriend in my sleep last week. and I 100% blame this stupid book
First off, absolutely love the cover of this book. The colors and the art is bold. This is the second book in the 12 book Dead series by T.W. Brown. I read the complete Zomblog saga and loved it. So far, I love this series too. I’m a big zombie and horror fan. As in the first book, we continue to follow the lives of many different characters throughout. I recommend this book to anyone who loves zombies and horror and post apocalyptic books.
T W Brown's Dead:Revelations is the second book in a series about a zombie apocalypse and different perspectives of it. It continues in same style as first book, giving the reader multiple perspectives of the going ons. Its well written, well developed and highly entertaining- utterly addictive. I NEED MORE!!
This one actually gave me tears. This book is extremely visceral. The taboo things you don't read about in other books - what could happen during an apocalypse like this - happen in this book. It's gut wrenching. I am finding it very hard to listen to those parts of the book but I think that's what makes it so good. Makes your heart hurt.
The second book build up on the great setup of the first. The geek's story started to get better and better as we got to know each one of the guys and although Steve's story was a bit slower than in the first book, we could see him thinking more about living in this world and not only reacting to what was happening in order to survive.
Look there's not a lot to say it's pretty simple, this is the best of the best,Dark, Gritty and Raw, this is zombie post-apocalyptic fiction at its finest, read the reviews, the word is out it, don't get better than this
I liked it, but less than the first one. There are too many explicit scenes, and that makes them less impacting (and to be honest a bit boring, that were some characters that I ceased to care altogether and would rather not having them on the book). Still, a lot of fun and action!!
The series is doing well so far. Issues like so many with flipping tenses constantly and a few mistakes like snuck instead of sneaked. Hung instead of hanged but overall the writing is pretty good especially when so many others in this genre are complete crap.
Zombie books at there finest. Read all 12 books loved them felt like I was watching a movie, these books need to be made as a media mini series, also had me laughing at times, & crying with some of the characters. A must read !!!!!
These books are really getting to me I mean they make you think. Think about what in the end will happen to societal norms. Norms such as age especially. Will women become submissive sex slaves or warrior queens like in the movies.
