Sixteen years ago Richard and I, with our then dog, 14 year old Holly in a trailer attached to Richard's bike, cycled down through western France via the canal paths, arriving in Antibes in July. With the exception of two fleeting visits back to the UK we have lived in France ever since.

For the past five years we have lived in a small cottage in central Brittany with one large collie dog called Viking, one fat cat known as Little’un and a young tortoiseshell cat called Missy. Oh, and there are various ducks and chickens in the garden, and a large pond with about a hundred fish in!

I have contributed short stories and serials to many of the UK women's magazines including, The People's Friend, Candis, My Weekly, Best, Yours and my stories have been published in Australia, Sweden, South Africa and Ireland.

I also write magazine features and my work has been published in national magazines and newspapers like, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Home and Country, Devon Life. For over three years I had my own newspaper column in the South Hams Group of Newspapers, that took a wry look at family life.

My Opinion

Firstly I have to say that I really appreciate the fact that this was set in a wool shop, I was reading this around knitting myself a jumper. Following Mattie's decision to step back from the shop it was nice to watch as Katie grew into owning the wool shop.

This is another lovely book from Jennifer Bohnet - I have yet to be disappointed by one of her books. This would make for a lovely holiday read.

This novel is a really cozy and heartfelt story of romance, friendship, and finding yourself later in life. It mixes in history and small-town bucolic scenes as well. Both of the main characters have their own soul searching going on, though I did feel that Katie could have used more character development.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'High Tides And summer Skies' by Jennifer Bohnet.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Jennifer Bohnet, Book And Tonic, Boldwood Books and Rachel's Random resources Tours.

Publication date 11th August 2023.

This is the first book I have read by this author but it most definitely won't be my last!!

This novel consists of a prologue, 41 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

WOW!!!! What can I say?!?!  What an absolutely beautiful book that I fell in love with!!! I cannot wait to read more books by this extremely talented author!

This book is beautifully written with vivid descriptions setting the picture perfectly in the readers mind. The title, description and cover works perfectly with the storyline.

This book is an absolutely gorgeous multigenerational escape!!!  It is an absolute rollercoaster ride of emotions filled with heartbreak, jealousy, regrets, romance, anger, family, love, loss, secrets, friendship and so much more. I was completely swept on the storyline and loved having a holiday not only in Dartmouth Devon but also all over the Mediterranean while on a cruise with Mattie and Henri. I have never actually been on a cruise myself but thanks to Jennifer's evocative writing skills it definitely felt like I was on one while sitting at the captain's table, relaxing in Mattie's suite and walking around the gorgeous places she visited with Henri as her guide. It wasn't just the cruise scenes that made me feel like I was on holiday but the whole book including the time in Dartmouth where the majority of the book is set where I could smell the sea air and hear the visitors to Mattie's shop A Good Yarn chattering away!!! Mattie lost her sister Clara just after the war just after Clara's love Hal was killed in the war. This broke Mattie's heart and because of that she hates anything and everything to do with that time, including Americans. However Henri eventually talks her around and during the book there is a lot of talk about the history of Dartmouth which included Operation Tiger. I was fascinated with the history of Dartmouth and the fact that Jennifer has done her research shines through the storyline. It is one of my pet hates when an author does not do enough research on the topic they are writing about as it can lead to unnecessary mistakes which can spoil the storyline for me so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Jennifer on researching your history well. This book really is a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I was utterly glued to the pages and I could not bring myself to put it down. I was carrying my phone to read it in kindle every chance that I got. I adored the gorgeous ending and would love to see this book turned into a series. I don't want to say anything else about the storyline as I don't want to give to much away but I do want to mention two more things. I absolutely loved the gorgeous little twist at the end which I was definitely not expecting and I also adored the epilogue that was based on a year after the last chapter and told us what happened to the main characters in that time and what they were now doing which I thought was an absolutely brilliant addition and something I haven't seen done in a fictional book prior to today so another Congratulations to Jennifer for adding that!!! I would seriously recommend this book to anyone and everyone!! A gorgeous uplifting romance that will warm your hearts 💝. I am off to add the rest of Jennifer's past and future books to my Amazon wish list as soon as I've finished this review!!

Clear your schedules as this is one gorgeous and unputdownable stunner ❤️

The characters are strong, realistic and I became completely invested in each and every one of them. They all had their own problems, secrets, feelings and all had unique personalities and I just absolutely loved getting to know them all. I felt each of their love , friendship, pain, heartbreak, happiness, anger, sorrow and so much more. I loved the main protagonists Katie and Mattie who were both such strong females. I love seeing strong female leads in books being female myself and these two were both fantastic women. I loved seeing their personalities change and develop as individuals as well as watching them bond with each other as the storyline went on. I also adored their relationships with Leo and Henri grow in strength from page to page. Leo and Henri were handsome and romantic men as well as both also being realistic and strong. Some of the other characters that I loved meeting included Noah Sr, Noah Jr, Elizabeth, Vicky and Trisha but one of the best characters had to be the lovable Bert!!!

I am a huge animal lover so any books that contain animals as part of their plot are always a huge hit for me and I absolutely adored the cheeky and sweet Bert!!! Although the majority of the characters were amazing and I would love to meet them again there were also a few snakes in the grass which I couldn't stand such as Patrick and Ron. However, regardless of if I loved them or hated them they each played their parts perfectly and it wouldn't have been as amazing a read as it was if I had loved them all!!!

Jennifer does an absolutely amazing job of bringing the story to life and the characters leap out of the pages as your turning them thanks to her evocative writing skills!! It is so hard to say what I feel about the characters without giving anything away so I won't say anymore about them as I don't want to go into too much detail at the risk of spoiling it for other readers but Jennifer really has done an amazing job at bringing each of the characters to life and I am missing them already. Well done Jennifer!!!

Congratulations Jennifer on an absolutely gorgeous, escapism filled with everything you could one in a page turner!!! I am looking forward to reading more of your previous and future books. I would absolutely love to see this book turned into a movie!!! This is why I would like to welcome you to my favourite author list and here's to your next success 🥂

Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue and the first two chapter of Jennifer's 'Summer on the French Riviera' which promises to be just as gorgeous as this book and is one I'm looking forward to reading myself!!

Overall an absolutely gorgeous book that will take you to Devon and warm your heart ❤️!!!

260 pages.

This book is just £2.99 to purchase on kindle, free with kindle unlimited and £9.99 in paperback  (at time of review) via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

I was soon invested in this story of starting over and second chances. You see these story threads running through the generations and there is the uplifting message that it is never too late to start again and make new friends and relationships. At the centre of the book is Katie who is at a crossroads in her career. Although she loves her work in the media, it seems that a break from it is very welcome and she takes up the challenge of breathing new life into her godmother's shop. Katie proves to be independent and hardworking, full of ideas and open to making new friendships, as well as reconnecting with her childhood friends.

Mattie is an interesting character who you feel has plenty of new experiences she wants to try, once she has stepped out of the comfort blanket of her everyday routine. You see her ideas about the past challenged and she reassesses her views. There are some interesting parts of the story regarding what life was like in the Second World War in Devon and the arrival of some Americans stirs up memories for many. This is an uplifting story, with likeable characters and some mysteries to unravel along the way.

In short: Starting over, fresh starts
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of the book

An interesting perspective on navigating life and love from both an older woman's perspective as well as one from a younger woman's perspective. It is intriguing how preconceived notions set you up for success or failure as well as miscommunication with others until you start unraveling the past and figuring out the future in an open manner. This book does a wonderful job of bringing this to light while being funny, sad and a few other emotions peppered in while being completely entertaining. Wrap in a bit of history and a few crimes and this book truly has something for everyone. The characters are extremely well written as compelling and relatable with a touch of humor as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to more from this author as this was my first introduction to her!

Mattie has devoted her whole life to the family wool shop A Good Yarn, she is tired and feels life is passing her by. Her goddaughter Katie has been made redundant so she is ideal to help update her shop. Beautiful setting of Devon and lovely descriptions of the area and its history made this a perfect summer read.

I enjoy a book that features characters that make a change to their lives and in this gorgeous book, we get to see two fantastic characters achieve that.
Mattie, who has been working all her adult life in a knitting shop has the opportunity to leave her sheltered life behind in Devon and to experience new adventures in her retirement. She also has the chance to come to terms with heartbreak from her childhood in the process.
Katie her Goddaughter also has a chance of a new beginning, taking on Mattie’s shop and moving back to an area she knew as a child too.
It was such a lovely read, seeing both women making a new life for themselves and making friends along the way.
A little bit of local history was interesting too and added further depth to the story.
A perfect summer read!

It was lovely to return to Dartmouth, albeit retrospectively, and meet such lovely new characters. Katie and Mattie were perfect leading ladies, as we followed their stories. Mattie had devoted more than 50 years of her life to A Good Yarn, the family’s knitting shop. Now ready to take life a little more easily, she decides to hand over the reins to her goddaughter, Katie. As Mattie has never married, being dedicated to the shop, she has no children of her own and tragically, no nieces or nephews as we discover.
Katie is made redundant from a job that she loves and at the same time, her love life dips into limbo. Despite only intending to visit briefly, Katie finds herself being attracted to the offer of taking over the shop from Mattie. Her memories are filled with happy times at A Good Yarn, and she realises that she could start over there.
Throw in some complications like a lifelong best friend and Mattie’s jealous relation, and there’s plenty going on. If I was pressed to pick a favourite part, it would probably be related to Mattie’s cruise adventure. Jennifer Bohnet writes romance for all ages and certainly doesn’t shy away from characters with a few extra miles on their clocks.
I absolutely adored Katie’s story arc, as she evolved from a career-driven woman into a much softer yet stronger businesswoman. I was rooting for her from the opening chapters and silently urging her to make what I thought were the right decisions.
There is much joy in this story, tempered with some bittersweet memories, but I can promise that you’ll be left feeling both joyous and uplifted. Highly recommended.

High Tides And Summer Skies by Jennifer Bohnet is a very charming contemporary novel that will warm your heart.
Whilst being set in present day in the Dartmouth area, there are also ties to the past in the form of World War II and practicing for D-Day. This took place at Slapton Lees leading up to Torcross. The location was familiar to me as I had holidayed there as a teen. This helped to bring the novel to life for me, along with Jennifer Bohnet’s marvellous descriptions.
Tragedies in the past still touch lives in the present. A life has been blighted by guilt over circumstances she could not change as a child. Silence has been kept but lives only heal when mouths open.
The novel shows you are never too old to have a new beginning.
A wool shop for over sixty years is in need of a make-over. This is mirrored in lives too.
Delving into the past, searching for roots, produces some amazing ties. Long-ago written letters provide comfort n present day.
The small town has a wonderful community feel. Townspeople come together to support each other.
All the characters were delightfully drawn, likable and realistic. They warmed my heart as I witnessed their interactions and lives started to bud, blossom and bloom.
High Tides And Summer Skies was perfectly charming. I absolutely loved it and look forward to more from Jennifer Bohnet.
I received a free copy via Rachel’s Random Resources. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Another lovely book from Jennifer Bohnet!
Easy reading, warm hearted story, and great for a holiday read!
Mattie is feeling she needs a change from running the wool shop she has worked in all her life, it’s time for a holiday and perhaps some travel. She tries to persuade her goddaughter Katie to take on the shop when Katie is made redundant from her job in Bristol. There is work to be done to bring the shop up to date, with a refresh of paint and new ideas. Will Katie rise to the challenge?
The story is woven around Dartmouth, Devon, knitting and cream teas!!
Really loved the characters, the storyline and the background history, the writing flows beautifully, thoroughly enjoyable!!
Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the early read!!

Set mostly in Dartmouth, England, this delightful story revolves around two women, some painful childhood memories, and a yarn shop. Maddie has spent her whole life in Dartmouth, working in her family's store. Katie, her goddaughter, has been in Bristol for years, working on a career in media. When she is made redundant at her struggling company, Maddie invites her to come home to Dartmouth to run the yarn store for her. The setting is lovingly described, each woman has issues to work through, and a family from the US arrives to make a documentary about World War ii, the staging of Operation Overlord and memories local people still hold. The Americans prove to be just what Maddie needs to help her let go of painful memories.

Mattie is in a rut, restless, she feels as if her life has passed her by. With her goddaughter's help, can she start a new chapter of her life?

I love reading about bucket lists and chasing dreams, it takes such courage to completely change your life path.

This was a sweet story about love, family, and taking chances, whatever your age.

The characters were believable and likeable, and the subplots woven throughout added interest.

Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in return for my honest review. This review will also be posted to my Instagram account (@kathleenryderauthor), as well as to my blog (daydreamsinthedesert.com) closer to the release date.

Much of this sounded familiar but when I checked Goodreads I had not read it. I am not usually a re reader of books So kept reading. Have finished reading this and then got to the end and read the author’s note when the author said this book was ‘originally published as ‘Shadows of Conflict’ and the author tweaked and lengthened it with extra scenes and chapters, which could explain why I didn’t remember all of it. Plus, in my defence, it was over ten years ago when I first read it under the other title. So still four stars as I did enjoy it but don’t feel inclined to review it again. So if you want to read the original review, you will find it under that title, ‘Shadows of Conflict..

Mattie is beginning to feel like her life has not been lived. In other words, she feels as though its in a rut. She asks for her goddaughter's help. Maybe it is too late for Mattie to begin a new way of life. Its probable she's too old to travel. Taking a spin on a new life is interesting. What most readers like reading about is dreams and bucket lists. Really, your reading about courage. It takes a brave person to go for a whole new way of life. Just the thought of a person choosing to change deserves a reward.

A lovely multigenerational story set in Dartmouth and the Mediterranean. Mattie has run the family wool shop all her adult life. She's tired and needs a change. Katie has a glamorous job and partner, but she wonders if she should change direction when she loses her job. Both women, godmother and goddaughter, have the opportunity to change, but do they genuinely want to? I like the dynamic between the women, the plot twists and the uplifting quality of this story.

Good Story But…

This was a fun and interesting story that taught me some new information about WWII, facts I’d never heard about previously. I enjoyed the plot. My only complaint with the book is the acceptance and normalization of living together before married. The protagonist is living with her boyfriend in the beginning of the book and someone else, her new boyfriend, when the book ends. It could have easily been different and would have improved the story and the book if that part were changed.

A Warm uplifting novel

Katie goes to visit her godmother as she's just been made redundant and needs time out but her godmother Mattie wants Katie to take over her shop, A Good Yarn and while she finally has a holiday. Katie has many ideas for the shop and renovates with her old friend Leo's help who is delighted to see her back. Her boyfriend who has been largely ignoring her turns up uninvited and asks her back but she's keen on helping her Aunt and also on Leo ......

Who’s this Leo guy?

I’m not sure what Leo did to earn my ire, but author Jennifer Bohnet found a way. Anyhow, Mattie and Katie are the main characters. Mattie owns A Good Yarn, an all-things store covering everything involving, well, yarn. But she’s ready to retire and turns it over to Katie to manage the store. There’s so much that happens that would turn my belly, but Katie stands strong. Worth reading.

If you are looking for a non challenging romance this is very pleasant. The writer seems to have really been in the places she describes and not taken them from tour guides. Its all a bit too "easy" as everything falls into place and the issue with the aunt at the end feels very low stakes and rather like early writing career plotting. A good way to pass a sleepless night.

A lovely story about family, love and moving on even later in life. Great characters and stories weaved throughout. I enjoyed the history as well as the romance.

Full disclosure - I received a copy of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Sweetly inevitable

No surprises here. Just two sweet romances in a dream-come-true story. Not soppy sweet, just charmingly so. Perfect for a rainy day on the couch or a sunny day on a patio.

Good Read

I love the writing style and the book was very enjoyable. I did think it was a little long and drawn out at one point, and too many calamities. However I will be reading more by this author.

High Tides and summer skies

Loved this book based in and around Dartmouth. Stories from the war and the American soldiers and their families. Heart warming ending to this lovely book.

Another lovely book

To transport you away. Always an absolute pleasure to read one of Jennifer Bohnet’s romantic novels. Dartmouth is so close but we hardly ever visit - feel the need to take another trip there soon.

I was reading this and thought it was so familiar. Got to the last page and discovered that it was a re-working of Shadows of Conflict. Still thoroughly enjoyed it. Reading a Jennifer Bohnet book is just like having a big cuddle! Warm and lovely. Enjoy

This was an enjoyable story about being forced into a new way of life and then realizing that it is exactly what you wanted and needed, and your old life was not what you thought it was. A sweet story.
