Raising the Dead: A Doctor Encounters the Miraculous

Rate this book
On October 20, 2006, a middle-aged auto mechanic, Jeff Markin, walked into the emergency room at the Palm BeachGardensHospital and collapsed from a massive heart attack. Forty minutes later he was declared dead. After filling out his final report, the supervising cardiologist, Dr. Chauncey Crandall, started out of the room. "Before I crossed its threshold, however, I sensed God was telling me to turn around and pray for the patient," Crandall explained.
With that prayer and Dr. Crandall's instruction to give the man what seemed one more useless shock from the defibrillator, Jeff Markin came back to life--and remains alive and well today.
But how did a Yale-educated cardiologist whose Palm Beach practice includes some of the most powerful people in American society, including several billionaires, come to believe in supernatural healing?
The answers to these questions compose a story and a spiritual journey that transformed Chauncey Crandall.

Dr. Chauncey Crandall IV is an eleventh generation American, born and raised in Virginia just outside Washington D.C. Chauncey comes from seven generations of ministers, some of which helped birth religious freedom within the New World.

God revealed Himself early on in Chauncey’s life in a very powerful way. He was just six years old attending a gospel service being held in a local barn. The old biblical war cry hymn began to play, “Onward Christian Soldiers,” and Chauncey remembers feeling the presence of God for the first time.

But for many years he ran from God, however; The Father lovingly brought Chauncey back to Him at the age of 19 in Togo, West Africa when he was financially abandoned on an anthropology trip with his college. Chauncey remembers being on his knees crying out to the Lord in a brothel-like hotel to save his soul. He recalls looking up to see a world map above the bar cabinets split in two. The New world was on the left and the Old World was on the right. Chauncey took this to be a sign from God, confirming that the old man needed to be split from the new man who was now in Christ Jesus. Chauncey was born again!

At the age of 27, while attending medical school, Chauncey found himself in the middle of the Communist Revolution on the island of Grenada in the British West Indies. It was at this time that the Lord stressed the importance of water baptism. In a small Caribbean cove, with the indigenous brothers and sisters in Christ, Chauncey was water baptized as Russian/Cuban gun ships patrolled the shoreline.

Chauncey went on to become an interventional and preventative cardiologist who currently practices in the Palm Beach area. After struggling whether or not to become a missionary, Chauncey recalls one day, during hospital rounds, receiving a direct call from God that his patients were the people group that God gave him to minister to and to get well. Dr. Crandall lives constrained to this challenge and prays with his patients for their healing and salvation in Christ alone.

He and his wife Deborah were married in 1978 and currently reside in Palm Beach, Florida. They have two sons, Christian Pierce and Chadwick Baxter.

Dr. Crandall runs after all that God has to offer and is not afraid to walk firmly in his faith. He walks in bold humility and his faith in God has led him to see countless miracles. He lectures and ministers on a national and international level. He is committed to his Savior, the power of the Holy Spirit, and his family.

This is a great book. Dr. Crandall is a cardiologist in Palm Beach. When the miracle that is chronicled in this book first took place, it was all over the South Florida news. I've heard Dr. Crandall preach before, and boy is he ever on fire for Jesus. The anointing on this doctor's life is powerful. This is the kind of doctor you want providing medical treatment for your heart. His walk with the Lord is encouraging. I highly recommend his book.

I hated this book and it's my fault. I didn't realize this was a Christian preaching book when I bought it.

I really enjoy reading medical books and exploring healthcare problems through a different point of view. So when I picked this book I had anticipated it to be full medical miracles. The disappointment was immeasurable when I discovered this is actually a faith preaching book.

This isn't the story of a doctor witnessing miracles in a medical setting (maybe only 5%). No, it's the story of a father, who just happens to be a doctor, and his journey of rediscovering his faith when his son is diagnosed with cancer.

I have no religious beliefs, so once I discovered this was a Christian book I decided to take it as a learning experience to see how parents rely on their faith in times of family illness. But there's only so much preaching I could withstand.

Dr. Crandall behaviour throughout this book put me on edge. He decides to leave his family and joins a missionary group in Mexico to witness God's miracles. He asks his patients if he can pray for them (out loud and in their presence) in hopes that his son will be healed. Telling a women she needs to break up with her boyfriend or get married because she's living in sin and it's making her spiritually ill. It was all too much for me.

The content aside, the writing was fairly well done. It was easy to understand and the storyline had an okay flow. The praying monologues were repetitive and drawn out however.

An excellent faith driven novel but a terrible medical memoir.

I'm just so happy I'm done with this book!

If this guy is a cardiologist or TCV surgeon, actually not sure which he is not very clear, I would stay the he** away from him. Page 2 he calls the troponin test the "toponin" test? WHAT? A CARDIOLOGIST DOES NOT KNOW WHAT A TROPONIN TEST IS? Red flag! On page 20 he talks about his son's dx of CML and states he was told it is incurable. What? NO HEMATOLOGIST/ONCOLOGIST OUTSIDE THE 1970'S WOULD SAY THIS! The cure rate is around 80%. Would a "real" doctor say on page 26 "As part of my effort to shield the family from dealing with doctors and callous medical personnel…" Dude, aren't you a doctor and callous medical personnel? I started trying to count the # of times this guy says "I" in this book and then "I" had to stop. Literally after a few chapters you will be up into the insane #'s of I's. This is an egotistical trip where he self-glorifies and according to his ranting he has cured more people than Jesus did in the Bible. What? The writing is sophomoric at best, no real or interesting details or descriptions of anything including his "miraculous" cures. My upbringing is very, very strict Catholic so I have no idea what this slain in the Spirit stuff is, but it is all over the place and on page 142 apparently he was knocking out teenagers left and right. Is this legal (to knock out kids)? "These weren't 'courtesy drop,' as one sometimes sees at Pentecostal meetings. These teenagers went out…until he fifteenth…he started manifesting demons, writhing and slithering on the ground, growling, yelling, and screaming." Apparently a ton of people bought into this guy because he was invited all over the world and he always reminds us that they told this guy how amazing he is! Again seems like more of a pat on the back for the guy and again, very poorly written. Page 195 the guy talks about how everyone else annual World Christian Doctors Network in Miami (apparently an annual thing) was "a little too matter-of-fact, with doctors presenting one case after another." Then the dude starts screaming "I let out a Aaaahhhhhhhhhhh! The more I wailed, the better I felt." What dude? Then he was finally, the savior, called up to speak "As I told the story, the detached professionals in the audience became engaged and shouted affirmation. They were cheering and clapping. As I…" Again it is all and always about him, he tries to cover it up with saying otherwise, but this is all about how he saves every situation and is the greatest ever.

I have to be honest. When I was submitting my name for this drawing, I realized, after the fact, that I must not have read through the overview of the story in its entirety. I had a very different perception of this book before I received it. I was not expecting it to be one of such high religious persuasion. Now, I am not a particularly religious person and so it is not infrequent that literature with a heavy religious tone turns me from a book.

But, I won the draw and decided to give it a chance. I was also quite a bit curious about the strong religious belief that persists with someone in a field often stereotyped with a lack of faith. So from a sociological standpoint, I plowed forward.

I was certainly not incorrect in my assessment of this being a highly religiously toned book, the synopsis points to this quite clearly, but I was quite taken with the overall story of a man drawn into belief, and not just apathetic belief, that he could not explain or reason, at least initially. I found my interest in this book falling with that tone of growth into a faith practiced, but perhaps not truly embraced in full. That element of the book was quite striking.

I had heard of the story of Dr. Crandall praying for a man who had died from a heart attack and the man returning to life. However, I didn't know the story of how started in praying for healing—when his own son had leukemia. Even though his son died, he continued his involvement with healing and prayed with his patients and had many positive healing experiences. He emphasizes, though, that he is more concerned with the health of the person's soul than the health of the body, and he says that God always heals our mortality and gives us eternal life when we accept Him.

Wow!

This book is phenomenal. Crandall has experienced the hand of God on his life in a way that will inspire you to pursue the same. His courage is amazing as he tells of tragedy in his life in a way that will stir your heart. The writing is also excellent and he's a great storyteller while giving all glory and thanks to God for the story. This one will change your life. Get it!

Absolutely wonderful testimony to God’s great love!

What seemed to me to begin as a tale of miracles and struggles the author experienced turned into a heart-gripping, deeply inspiring, totally uplifting journey into the heart of God’s love in Jesus Christ. I had no trouble believing in the healing miracles because Christ has done them in me—He healed me of cancer miraculously just before I was scheduled for a hysterectomy, and He has kept me cancer-free for 40 years. He gave me a child when I hadn’t been able to have one after 15 years of marriage. He has healed my back and legs several times. But the greatest gift of all is eternal salvation through Christ and His great love. Read this doctor’s story for riches of inspiration.

This book is life changing. This is the best book I've ever read!

If you read this book you will experience God first hand in your own life.
As I read this book I became alive Inside! It awakened my dead spirit. Opened my eyes to the power of the holy spirit and makes me want to seek God like Dr Crandall did. Cause I want to be used by God and experience the Holly spirit in ways like never before . I want to know God on a higher level then I've ever known .
You need to read this book, it will change your thinking towards God and people.

I was looking forward to hearing about miraculous recoveries, but I didn't expect to find a self-help guide to becoming Evangelical. I wish he'd either stuck to the topic the name suggests, or given the book a different name. I don't question his experiences and I'm a believer in miracles but not a fan of the self-help genre. I did stick with it to the end, but I wouldn't recommend it without telling someone what it's really about.

What can I say about this book? When I began to read it I was skeptical because I have always been skeptical of these types of stories....but as I continued reading I got a whole different feeling...I took on a whole new perspective....as I read the last page I began to cry...not because it was a sad ending but because I felt so different...I couldn't stop the crying if I wanted to...I loved the message in thus book

This book was not at all what I was expecting. I got the impression that the author had some medical success and found a way to parlay that into some bizarre religious enlightenment. When he wrote about the girl that was possessed by demons I threw the book away.

Started out feeling inspirational, but I had to give it up when I got to the part about praying for a girl who was "manifesting demons"....frankly, I find that sadly delusional.

I had high hopes for this book as I thought (incorrectly) that it was the story of how a doctor taught the science of healing struggled with the non-scientific phenomenon of spiritual healing. Dr. Crandall, who discovers early in the book that he is gifted with the power to call upon God to heal people, is nonetheless faced with his own son's terminal illness and realizes that God's plan sometimes does not include healing. Dr. Crandall's struggle with the imperfect power of healing is to me the most powerful moment in the book, yet as a reader I felt it was largely unexplored. Instead the story focuses on the miraculous power of God's healing channeled through Dr. Crandall's touch, inspirational without question, but not as impactful without exploring the moments when God doesn't perform as we mere mortals might hope.

I was curious to read about a doctor who had miraculous healing experiences. It was intriguing to read because he was so well grounded in the scientific world, and yet gradually was drawn into the spiritual world.
He has an extraordinary story and it was interesting to read. I believe in the power of God to do all things, so the amazing healings did not surprise me at all. What did surprise me was that he seemed to remain skeptical even after some clear miracles had occurred. The story started to go off the track when he was equating our service to God with God's blessings, but when his son died and he chose to remain faithful it was (in my opinion) back on solid ground.
Dr. Crandall has been given the gift of being used for healing and that alone is a story that should be told.

This book was not what I thought based on the title. The author - a physician shares stories of healing and one of a patient raised from the dead. This story of Jeff Markin received national attention. Threaded through the book is the story of one of the physician’s son and his battle with leukemia and that’s the bulk of the story. It’s the lessons that the family learned and encounters with God through his sons illness that are the focus of the book. It was interesting and encouraging but title just a bit misleading.

Great book! A beautiful testimony of how God meets us right where we are in the good, the bad and the ugly. We may not understand all that God is doing but we have to surrender to Him and be open to what He wants to do through us. I also love how Dr. Crandall is led by the Holy Spirit and Faith while practicing medicine and healthcare. We need more books testifying of born again believers being used by God within there profession.

This is possibly one of the best books I have ever read! This is one amazing doctor! He tells his story sincerely with great humility. The stories are sensational, but he does not “sensationalize” them. He offers himself up daily to the Lord for His use and sensational things happen. His main purpose is to lead souls to Christ for redemption and eternal life.

Excellent book! I enjoyed this book both in a medical and a Christian way. The author tells about his medical practice and his faith in Jesus Christ. He is a strong believer and prays for his patients. I now feel motivated to pray more often and to believe in miracles.

This is an amazing book

I wished it was longer. The not of a man becoming completely yielded to God and the being able to see him used by God in amazing ways is just overcoming. I wish I could meet this man and have him heal me.

Interesting story, but more the story of his son's leukemia. Only a few actual miracles. But a quick and good read, especially for those who question the miraculous.

I enjoyed reading and contemplating the true story of Dr. Crandall and his family living through an extremely difficult journey of emotional and spiritual devastation, followed by a phenomenal, yet difficult transformation to highly faithful believers .

The love for a son, and the determination to do anything to have him healed was inspiring.

The book was well written. He starts with a miraculous raising of the dead, which certainly grabbed my attention, and then he went back to the beginning of the story, when he learned that one of his sons was diagnosis of Leukemia. Thus begun a spiritual journey, with many situations and events that challenged his family’s faith, and took them down the difficult quest for the spiritual answers and divine intervention and healing.

I am not evangelical by nature, so in some ways I didn’t connect with some of the paths that he followed and the public healing he performed, but I do respect his determination to seek guidance and a measure of God’s power to help others. Once he found himself being able to call upon God’s power to help others, his focus was more on helping them to come to Christ, rather than simply healing their bodies.

I was able to learn more about faith, and submitting to God’s will. “Not My Will, but Thine, Be Done”. This has helped me in my journey.

A couple of days ago I learned that my sister-in-law's rare cancer has started to get out of control, with no proven medical cure to rely on. We are relying on faith in the Lord's blessings, combined with the only medical treatment available for her condition.

I recommend this to anyone who seeks to have faith, or seeks to increase their faith in God's power and His desire to bless our lives as we seek Him.

Doctor Chauncey Crandall had always been a good Christian but not as much as his wife. And that had always been a problem in their life as a couple. She always had wanted him to know God better and trust in him more and go to him with all his heart without any questions. But after saving this auto mechanic, Chauncey Crandall felt not only different but felt he had to know more especially after that night. After that incident, he was talking with his wife in their bedroom when the phone rang,, it was the lab. The lab technician said to Chauncey, we have the results for your son Chad' blood test. I'm sorry to say that he has Leukemia and it's the worst type.
Chauncey will eventually stop working most everyday to look for the very best doctors and treatments for his son. Since his wife was a bigger God believer then him she takes care of going to church more often.
They both prayed as hard, but he just couldn't understand why God punished him this way since he'd always been a believer. Through it all he learns about completely giving himself to God.
Through his different trips to look for people that were touched by God or by the wholy spirit,
he finally got touched by the wholy spirit and he could finally talked to big groups himself and touch to people and they too were touched by the wholy spirit through him.
And through him God made many miracles and so Chauncey witnessed many more great gifts of God this way but still could not understand why his son was still dying.
I tell you this book is a great read and the end will not leave you indifferent.
