In the 1990s, the author had twenty-one articles published, both nationally and internationally. After gaining an honours degree in Geosciences, doing post-graduate study in Occupational Health and Fitness, and earning a masters degree in Science Communication, he developed an interest for simple communication.
A passion for writing again emerged, and combining various interests in fine art, museum exhibition display, biology, geology, poetry, and the mystical led to the story of Peter: A Darkened Fairytale. The author still retains a childlike vision of the world, which is conveyed throughout his books.

Fantastical, madcap, non-stop adventures greeted Peter after climbing through the clock portal in Mrs. Kipple's shop. Strange, whimsical, beautiful, dangerous and evil creatures such as fairies, elves, shylongs, dragons, pineapple-eating bugs, witches and many more filled this dark but enjoyable fairy tale. Mr. O'Brien certainly created a memorable, magical world for Peter to explore on his tenth birthday!
This is a book that can be enjoyed by both adults and children.

I discovered from the author notes that William O'Brien resides in a small English village - the fertile inspiration of some of the land's most imaginative writers, Emily Brontë, Lewis Carroll, Daphne du Maurier, the list is endless, as are the misty, dark tales they have spun.
In this tradition, we find the eponymous Peter from a Darkened Fairytale on his tenth birthday cast into a purple forest searching for a friend and finding himself in the company of an intriguing cast of magical characters including a white witch and a beautiful young elf named Slip who makes him feel nervous, as beautiful young elves tend to make growing boys feel.
Having devoured Tolkien and the JK Rowling books, I can still recall what moves and inspires pre-teens when it comes to reading and this surreal journey with its dark edges and subplots that tell morality tales in new and fresh ways will hit the spot. Highly recommended.

Peter: A Darkened Fairytale is a fanciful adventure that will pull you in and make you feel like you're there. The descriptions are really well done.
Peter is just an ordinary boy who finds a key to a secret room. Once he opens that door his world will never be the same. Well actually he ends up in a totally different world full of talking animals, trees and paths. There are fairies, dragons, ghosts and every other creature you can imagine. Peter finds himself on a quest, which really turns into several quests. Every door, every passage, every path he takes, whisks him away to a new and challenging adventure.
It is a story that will highly appeal to middle grade and young adult readers. What an adventure.
I was given a copy by the author for an honest review and this is what I honestly think.

This book brought me back to my childhood. I loved the story and the descriptions of the world that Peter is in made me feel like I was there right along with him. The author's imagination is amazing. Peter's character meets up with so many different beings and creatures it is mind boggling how Mr. O'Brien came up with all of them. If you want to leave our world and enjoy a magical world that will blow your mind pick this book up and not only will you not want to put it down but you will want to believe you are Peter on this awesome journey.

Peter is just about to turn 10 years old and is expecting to grow quite substantially with the addition of a second digit to his age. With his mother, he visits Mrs Kipple, the owner of the local antiques shop, on the promise of a surprise birthday gift. While wandering around amongst the clutter of old and unusual objects he discoverers a clock through which more than time can pass and a magical journey through a strange and fantastical world begins.
William O’brien writing style, while quirky, keeps you hooked and truly brings his darkened fairy-tale world alive. His ability to describe the world through the eyes of a ten year old boy is quite remarkable and leaves you reminiscing about when our own thoughts were untarnished by the sensibilities of adulthood.
Peter: A Darkened Fairy-tale is like a cross between Alice in Wonderland, The Wind in The Willows and anything by Tim Burton and reads like a ride down a helter-skelter. Filled with weird and wonderful locations and off-the-wall characters, your mind is left buzzing by this authors unique and unfettered imagination. With the fast paced action and the in depth descriptive passages, the story flows like the perfect roller-coaster; a smooth yet exhilarating experience.

5 stars for William O'Brien!The magical and mysterious realms that you are taken to with Peter A Darkened Fairytale, are very creative and I really felt like I was a mouse in Peters pocket along for the adventure. This story with dark realms is so imaginative and full of non-stop action that I found myself on the edge of my seat and reading many parts out loud to my son, who wanted to know what happened with Peter and the scroll. This is his new summer read and William O'Brien is a great story teller to accomplish this. I recommend this book to everyone. With colorful characters such as fairies, elves, dragons, ghosts, and too many more to name, children of all ages will love the magical characters that come to life in surprising ways. I hope Peter has more adventures!

This book is great. I have to admit that at first I wasn't sure what to expect, and it really surprised me how much I enjoyed it because it isn't something I normally read. Like always I try to review without spoiling the story.The descriptions given were so clear in my mind it felt like a movie was playing through my head.In this tale we join Peter on a magical adventure where he meets many strange and unusual characters along the way.I would recommend this book to young and old it is very well written. In fact my son is currently reading it and once he finishes it I will add his thoughts.

Peter a Darkened Fairy Tale was an enchanting story of boy turning ten who falls into a clock that is a portal into the world of his dreams. He meets many magical creatures on his fascinating adventure to save the Shylong and thus the land from an evil trying to tear it apart. This story was very well written, perfect for my thirteen year old but captivated my attention as well. (My 11 year old is reading it now!)
With a brilliant plot, charming imaginative characters, and vivid descriptions, this book will capture your attention. I was reminded of Alice in Wonderland but thought my boys would enjoy this tale more because of the non-stop action with witches, fairies, elves, and a dragon. The book was beautifully poetic at times and the poems at the end were one of my favorite parts. All in all this tale was charming yet dark and managed to touch my heart.
And now for my son's opinion. My son said it was an interesting story that had him wanting to finish it. (He stayed up late reading this one.) He says it was a twisted tale with a happy ending. His favorite part was learning about all the different creatures in the land of Peter's dreams. In this story you'll meet Fingle, a lightening bug that eats pineapple chunks, a bluebird man, a mouse, a Jester who lost his marbles, a wizard that makes bones for the mushrooms to dance, fairies, elves, Shylongs, the King of the toads, Hally, who rubs himself all over with chicken so the guards won't eat him, an old spirit, friendly ghosts, the dwellers, a warrior, a good and a bad witch and their half dead evil father. Many times he told me about a funny part, something that made him laugh. Other times he would tell me about things like pocket dimensions, this book had him intrigued. He's says the story was fun, silly, odd, creepy, adventurous, and twisted. His favorite characters were Mr. Twindle Twondle, Peter and the Dragon.
My son is an avid reader of books like Harry Potter, and Artemis Fowl. He has already recommended this book to his brothers! I would recommend it to anyone that is young at heart!

In a small village is a boy named Peter who is ten years old. (or 85 years old and a lifelongian. You’ll have to read the book to know what I’m talking about.) He has grey-green eyes, a hazy smile, and unkempt strawberry-blonde hair. Peter was a well-mannered boy. But suddenly, he is thrust into a magical world and greeted by a strange bird dressed in a lavender shirt, taupe waistcoat, rose-tinted spectacles, and navy slippers. Peter enters a strange and amazing place he can’t believe. Turn and twists will keep you glued to the screen and as the plot thickens, you will enjoy one heck of a ride and journey.

It's gripping, with well-crafted plot that kept me turning the pages. Like the Chinese shop that the young protagonist of this novel visits, this imaginative novel by William O'Brien is "crammed with all sorts of unusual things." The story starts with a perfect setup for an adventure: we have a ten-year old curious and smart boy Peter who is prone to daydreaming, and a mom who is preoccupied with daily tasks.
But this is no ordinary adventure. The author, William O'Brien, uses his diverse experiences, from a degree in geosciences to a master's in science communication, in combination with his childlike vision of the world, to create a fascinating, mysterious, and multi-faceted world for Peter to explore. He brings in elements from a variety of disciplines and ways of knowing to weave this tale, providing the readers with a wide scope of possibilities to explore and ponder.

Unlike a toy designed for a specific purposes, a box is an open-ended play object that leaves it up to the child to decide what to do with it. Peter: A Darkened Fairytale grabs the reader in the opening sentences and pulls them into a world that most imaginations wouldn’t be able to conjure. It is the story of a young boy that finds himself on an unexpected journey, striving to save a Shylong and protect a civilization he didn’t know existed. Along the way he meets with ageless friends, elves, dragons, murderous sisters, cannibalistic fairies and a host of other magical creations.
Two things really stand out in the story. The first is the protagonist, a young, unassuming boy that finds he possesses courage and understanding far greater than he ever realized. He is a regular man young man that the reader can readily identify with thrust into the most bizarre of situations, armed with the advice of friends, a few trinkets tucked away in his satchel, and a firm sense of right and wrong.
The second is the exquisite job the author does with his attention to detail. Characters aren’t simply mentioned, they are depicted for the reader. Every scene is painted vividly, the reader able to fully envision the action as it unfolds.
This was a captivating read from start to finish, strongly recommended for audiences well beyond the middle-grade years.

Wow! Fantastical Fun.
This is a very creative, wish-it-would-never-end kind of story. The author has created a remarkable character in Peter, not to mention, Slip the elf, Arnica, Hally, Mrs. Kipple, Wind Sail, Mr. Twindle Twoondle, etc. Perhaps even more impressive is how he created a bizarre and whacky world, it’s as if the book was written through a kaleidoscope. Well written and imaginative – you’ll have a great time!

Peter is on the brink of discovering life in a different way than he ever imagined possible. On his 10th birthday he is mysteriously transported into a darkened realm that contains mysteries worth discovering. When he first embarks upon the land of clouds, he has no idea of what will lie in store for him, or of the eyes that watch him in the dark. From the ice castle carved into the mountain is a character called Bonemaker, who licks the air and makes skeletons, with eerie elves to do his bidding. Peter must be careful as he travels along this path, because it is haunted by spirits who can take him at whim where they may, and he just doesn't know where he might end up. Meanwhile, he is on a mission to deliver golden flakes to the fairies and try to rescue the Shylong so that there can be peace again.
He will learn the importance of controlling ones mind, as well as discover whether or not he is truly dead or alive. Will life become more colorful again, or will he have to remain in the land of the non-living?
William O'Brien has written this work in a very crafty sense. He is very prolific and descriptive with his words and is captivating. I not only enjoyed the story, but was pleasantly surprised to read the poems at the end that related to the characters, and especially "A Place of Knowing." O'Brien is truly a wordsmith, and I look forward to reading what else he has in store. Meanwhile, I will be passing it along for my daughters to enjoy! I was enchanted by it!

Masterfully written, it has great imagery and pacing and intriguing characters. In the story, O'Brien introduces us to Peter, a caring, cautious yet adventurous young man with a particular perspective on the world.
For example, here is Peter's interpretation of taxidermy: "One of the rooms, which had the word Taxidermy on the door, was full of glass cases with dead animals inside. Apparently, people used to like to rip the innards out of animals and have them stuffed with something or other."
The book is full of fascinating characters with mischievous names like Seebright, a bird, and Mr Twindle Twondle, a mouse, and a fungus who lives House of Golden Mushrooms, just to mention a few. Like any good writer, William O'Brien takes the time to develop both the characters and the world at large before plunging into the action. As a result, once Peter is swept away into the magical world, we as the readers become privately involved with Peter, his adventures and troubles.

Peter: A Darkened Fairytale by William O'Brien is a classic children's story straight out of Alice in Wonderland, but with far more imagination and style. Peter is about to get into double digits and is so excited. He visits Mrs Kipple's antique shop and likes a small wooden box. He takes it home and while tinkering with it, opens a secret compartment. He takes out a velvet pouch with curious items in it, one being key. He returns to the shop for his present and is shown an old clock with vivid drawings all over it. Mrs Kipple reminds Peter to take the pouch on his trip as he will need the items in it. With all the eagerness of a birthday boy, Peter slips the key into the keyhole. A door opens and Seebright the bird asks Peter to come in. Peter is swept along on a fantastic journey full of fantastical creatures that defy the imagination. The tale is well told and never lets up. The scary scenes will not frighten children, but make them gasp, giggle and guffaw. All in all, this reader very much enjoyed the ride and didn't want to get off.
A FIVE STAR wonderment for all ages. A must read that will have every kid wanting more.

I received a copy of this book for honest review. 'Peter: A Darkened Fairytale' is the story of a young boy on his tenth birthday who is transported into a mysterious realm of strange creatures and goes off on an enchanting yet perilous adventure.
This book hits the right note straight from the start, awakening a sense of wonder as Peter begins his journey and catching the reader unawares with some terrifying moments along the way. I very much enjoyed my immersion in this strange, dark fairy-tale world and was surprised by just how engaging the story was.
Although this is suitable for children, it is well written and captivating enough to hold the attention of adults. There is also a chapter on poetry after the story ends. I will admit I don't read poems in general so I don't have much of an opinion on them but I think they would make good bedtime reading to children.
Overall this is an enchanting read with some excellent dark fantasy material in there. I highly recommend this book as a fantastic, captivating fantasy story suitable for all ages.
This book hits the right note straight from the start, awakening a sense of wonder as Peter begins his journey and catching the reader unawares with some terrifying moments along the way. I very much enjoyed my immersion in this strange, dark fairy-tale world and was surprised by just how engaging the story was.

A twist on tales
This cute, quick read is very different to say the least. There was a comfort to it however. Not just in the creatures, but in the story. I felt like I was in a new aged Alice in Wonderland. It was a bit jumpy. I still found it easy to follow, but I had hoped for a bit more. But for a short story, that is the usual only complaint right? At least as far as the ones that I have read goes.
"The aroma you are enquiring upon is me, and you get used to it after a while," he said, wiping a stale chicken under his armpit. " Now that little snippet made me giggle. Moving on...
What more can I say? Inventive, tables that are giant turtles, I mean, imagination spilled all over this short story. (Hence my craving for it to be longer.)
I say take a chance, and remember... Don't put your feet in the lava! (You'll understand that bit when you read the book.) When you read, you will find 'a place of knowing.'

This book has everything! You start from a Harry Potter-esque child-suddenly-whisked-into-a-fantasy-world story, but from there it just grows in leaps and bounds. I loved the fact that all the characters are rich and real -- no matter how fantastical, they seem like living, breathing characters.
The main character Peter reminds me in some ways of the South Park boys -- in that he shows childhood naivete and extreme intelligence in equal bursts, making the story thoroughly readable and enjoyable.
The subtitle "A Darkened Fairytale" is accurate. It's dark, but not blindingly so. In fact, that darkness of the story helps illuminate the heart -- and wit -- behind it.

The first thing that caught my attention was the character of Peter. His inner world was rich, and he was different than most children in his age. In that curiosity the author managed to attract me to the storyline. There was something in the reality of order; that is in the environment of Peter’s surroundings that made Peter all the dreamier and recluse. As a reader I sought the spiritual world with him from the very first mention of his peculiarity. As the storyline evolves Peter enters the dreamy world of magic. Here the reader cannot escape the memory of the wonderful classic of ‘Alice in wonderland’ even though Peter is quite a peculiar character in comparison with Alice. In fact, as a reader I felt compassionate towards the ten years old boy, and often I have believed that he was a victim of autism. Thus, at each adventure I felt that Peter deserved to find happiness and inner peace for his outer reality, since the real world was a disaster. His escape to the world of imagination, particularly with the fairies, was in a way his way to cope with his hard life in school and at home. The darkness and the evil energies which shrouded Peter all the way to the end represent the struggle of a human being against the spiritual forces of darkness. Peter’s way to deal with his own demons and evil seemed unusual, but not without success, for his captivating imagination surpasses all evil through the wonderful and funny characters with which he encounters throughout the tale. Monsters, witch, mice, elves, fairies, a fish, toads, among many other characters gave the story a very rich texture. It felt like drinking a soup, rich of spices and vegetables, served as a wonderful book for the palate. I really enjoyed the poetry in the end. My favourite poem is ‘The Fortress’. However, my favourite lines are found in the poem ‘Kipple’

While reading "Peter: A Darkened Fairytale" I felt I was inside a turbulent nightmare within a maze. The pace of the narration quickens in a fashion similar to the changing of gears in a sports car. Every chapter is accompanied by lots of curves and gears shifting forward, merciless accelerating words and sentences. The book starts like that same sports car: parked, still, almost motionless, but soon it begins to move and it will not stop until the end.
The chapters speed up and, even when introducing new characters and situations, continue to pick up the pace, giving the impression of not wanting to grant the reader a respite. The characters and situations are as unique as “Alice in Wonderland” but on steroids.
The book has some intriguing statements –the tell-tale signs of a good writer–: “I am the Path of Information, so just ask what you need to know.” It also has other darker declarations, much darker: “Spilling evil into the world is an act of mercy.” There is also the question of having to give up. At least that is the impression I had from the following line: “All of the souls deserve help, but some are out of our reach.”
Finally, one can find in poetic-like statements things like: “An honest stranger becomes now a friend…” This is most intriguing because it is also true. Aren’t many of us looking for honest strangers to befriend?

I was given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book. When I first started reading it, I was unsure of what to expect from it but this book pleasantly surprised me!
It started out with a great introduction of Peter and his curiosity. It centers around his 10th birthday. He goes to a shop where he finds a small box that he wants to buy. Of course he gets it and this is where the story starts. When he returns to the shop late on, he gets swept away in a magical world.
Each chapter is a different part of the mythical and magical world. Peter soon finds out that his box will help him along his adventure and hopefully return to the real world at the end of it. He meets a variety of characters to help him along the way, as well as a few evil characters. Each character and world were so well thought out that you can't help but get swept away in the adventure! It was well written.
I did feel like the end came a little to quick. I wanted to read more when I was done and find out how Peter reacted later on because of some of the relationships he formed in the magical world. I just wanted to see a little more finality in the end. Overall I would definitely recommend this book to middle-school age and above!

Unsuspecting young Peter finds himself in a world of elfs, dragons and all kinds of fantasy creatures. One quest leads to the next and before you know it Peter and us readers have covered a world full of known and unknown creatures.
The author has done an amazing job making us witness the world from a young boys perspective. This is a fantasy adventure nothing short of the wonders of Narnia or Alice.
On a deeper level the book seems to be about finding your inner talents, your strengths and your faith in yourself. I loved the way Peter takes on the tasks ahead, learns and grows up during his journey.
The tone is often quirky and not at all as dark as I had come to expect. Although there are evil or slightly scary characters in the story, it remains a fun read that should please young and young at heart. If I had children I would read them this story. Peter is a remarkable and lovely character.
O'Brien is a creative and talented story teller who should do very well with this and his next stories. Very enjoyable.

It was my honor to be given the opportunity to read Peter: A Darkened Fairytale by William O’Brien. This story was an intriguing blend of Alice in Wonderland meets The Never Ending Story with a little The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe thrown in. O’Brien certainly gets 6 stars for creativity. His cast of characters is varied, fascinating and unique. The story begins in a sleepy village and although I have never been to England I could almost smell the countryside. Soon young Peter discovers that the world is a little more magical than he believed. I would only give the story 4 stars for the style of the writing. I would have loved it if O’Brien had expanded the storyline because at times I found it to be somewhat jumpy and abrupt. In addition, Peter was almost overly trusting in the beginning and I kept waiting for him to get into trouble and sure enough, trouble soon found him. Overall, I’d give it 5 stars because this is certainly a book I would recommend to both students and teacher friends who are looking for a new kind of fairytale complete with swords and dragons!

Peter is an average boy until he arrives in a land of fantasy. He enters a magical world where adventure and many surprises await. This story reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, only with some darker elements. This land, however, is quite unique, and Peter's adventures kept me guessing throughout the story.
There are many unique and unexpected characters within these pages. My personal favorite was Hally, who had me laughing aloud as I read. In fact, for over half of this story, I was reading with a silly grin on my face and not caring who happened to see me. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this story and was sad but fulfilled when it came to an end.
This story is charming without being cute. There are many twists and turns that keep a reader intrigued and wanting to know more. Believe me, this is a hard book to put down! There are many fresh ideas presented within this tale, and it is a true pleasure to read. I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys reading at all.

A Bizarre Tale!
Without doubt, this is one of the sweetest, darkest and strangest stories I have ever read. So much like Alice in Wonderland and the Lion, Witch & Wardrobe with dark and crazy thrown in! Right from the start, I was pulled into the pages of Peter’s world. I still can’t stop thinking about all the strange characters and how I want to be part of their world. I am getting giddy just thinking about those places again. I hope there will be more adventures or other stories from this author. The beautiful, natural and descriptive writing is unbelievable - from Mr. Twindle Twondle the mouse, Slip the elf, and Kiylore the dragon. I loved it all!
Also, at the end of this magical, fantasy world there are lovely poems about all the characters.

This story is a beautifully narrated tale for adults and children alike. Adults will enjoy the memory of books from their childhood in the way this story is woven like a traditional fairy tale. Children will enjoy the endearing and range of characters which exist in the fantasy world which Peter enters on his adventures.
Surrounded by an array of strange beings, both good and bad, Peter has to find his way through the land beyond the antiques shop and it reminded me of a cross between the tales of Narnia and Alice in Wonderland.
The reader will not be disappointed by this rich offering.

Peter , A Darkened Fairytale is what I would say is more of a hybrid tale that brings together the traditional elements of the old style tale served up with an array of New Age concepts that will have young readers along with older ones hanging on to every page. What’s not to love about a young boy who is trapped in a magical box? Peter, is not your ordinary chap, who begins his brave journey into different realms as he meets the most interesting characters and creatures including fairies, elves and monsters. I couldn’t help but love the zany creatures he meets and the crazy names of most of them. I loved Hally, the character named for his halitosis condition. Children will love how Peter is portrayed for his bravery as he deals with even the darkest and evil creatures .
William O’Brien surely knows what children crave as he has captured it all here. He keeps the pace fairly fast moving as it will keep young minds engaged. The book also has a poem for each character so children have a ‘keepsake’ as to remember their favorite character. As a teacher and reading specialist I would say this would be a perfect read to for grades one through five. I can already envision all the oohs an awes coming from the children as their teacher reads to them.

The writing in Peter - A Darkened Fairytale reminded me of a cross between Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and the original Hobbit. O'Brien draws you in so totally with his descriptive writing you can accurately and vividly visualize each scene. If I had to compare the imagery to a movie, I would suggest this could easily be turned into an animated picture along the same lines as the original Hobbit with its grand adventures and interesting characters.
Peter is an average boy who comes into a great quest on his tenth birthday. The story lines of elfin, talking mushrooms, The Path of Information and other countless characters that could only have been born of a creative imagination will hold you until the very end.
If you have a young or middle-grade reader who loves stories that capture their imagination and takes them to faraway places with quests befitting the even the bravest soul, this story is for them, and parents will enjoy reading it with them as well.
Bravo to O'Brien for creating such a marvelous piece of imaginative, creative writing. This is one that will surely entertain young readers for many years!

Now Fantasy is my Forte, i love it, so i was proper stoked to read this book by William O'brien.
Life for Peter is about to change on his 10th birthday, Peter is transported to the darkened realm where he embarks on a journey all the while under the eyes of the evil Bonemaker who can make skeletons and has nasty elves that do his every bidding. In his travels there are spirits who can steal Peter away and he doesn't know where he'll end up, his main task is to save the Shylong with some golden flakes.
It's strange and quiet a journey for a young kid to make but all the time we don't know if Peter is alive or dead either, so we don't know if he will ever make it back William is a great fantasy spinner and deserves to be up with the best haven't enjoyed a book like this since the earlier Discworld novels so i hope to read by this author in the future
