Yuki Suetsugu (末次 由紀 Suetsugu Yuki, born September 8, 1975) is a Japanese manga artist. Her career was put on hiatus after she was discovered of being accountable for plagiarism, including tracing. She later resumed her work on March 2007.

She debuted in 1992 in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine with Taiyō no Romance. Her works later moved to Bessatsu Friend magazine, also published by Kodansha.

On 2009-03-24, her work Chihayafuru was chosen for the Manga Taishō.

Taichi hasn’t become A-rank yet but it was more important for him not to give up than to become A-rank. I thought he was cool and has strong feelings. If I were him, maybe I can’t say such a thing.

So... you know how (in my review of the last volume) I said Chihaya had to stay home from the tournament to study... she doesn't, she runs off to cheer on Taichi, but by the time she shows up he's already lost, though this does lead to a run-in with Arata, who's also at the tournament trying to get back into form for the master qualifier. Then Kanna shows up and lets Chihaya have it for running out on study session and drags her back to face the cold righteous wrath of Komano-sensei. Anyway, after exams the final qualifier tournament is up and Chihaya faces a gauntlet of high-ranked A-class opponents, first a speedy childhood prodigy whom everyone thinks will be Queen some day (and is known for her speed) and then Yumin Yamamoto, the former Queen, whose failure to live up to expectations has left her feeling listless and unmotivated about karuta (and she can stay that way for all I care! ahem... it's not really pertinent to this volume but I don't like her very much as her style of karuta is basically to argue that every single card is hers regardless of whether she actually touched it first, it's a pretty scummy way to win IMHO, so yeah, we've introduced her: my most disliked character in the series (just below Taichi's awful mom)) and with her coach giving Chihaya permission to use speed again, it seems like Chihaya's on a roll and is on track to dominate the tournament... to be continued.

Nothing really pops out to talk about in this volume. It's very Chihaya-focused this time around, which, despite her main character status, marks the first volume in a while where someone else isn't stealing the spotlight. Her draw of opponents almost feels like a measuring stick: here's the Queen of the Future, here's the Queen of the Past... is she ready to stand alone before the fury of the Queen of the Present? ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Maybe (if you don't get the joke, go watch the trailer for the Scorpion King). Anywho, this volume also has the current Master (the male champion) show up briefly and... yeah, he's an... eccentric fellow.

It's awkward to say but much as I love this series, I'm not looking forward to the next volume. It always ticks me off when I get to this point in the anime and I often skip the episode containing the first part of the next volume. I wouldn't be surprised if it breaks the series's perfect streak of 5 star ratings. Still, this volume was excellent.

The dynamics of the new characters every time is just so good, from a child prodigy who is instantly put down by others for not winning to a former queen who’s seem to have lost her edge due to such expectations. The writing is good if you invest, the master Suou seems like a fun character so I want to see more of him. I feel like the current queen and Arata are due to face off in this manga. Overall just solid everywhere.

The cover for this volume is really gorgeous! I love how cute and flabbergasted Kana looks~

Also, behold the most aura-farming dude ever - Master Suou. He seems like a ragebaiter by the way. And he seems to have an air of slick-iness around him. I'm actually deeply intrigued about his character as a whole and I hope he'd make more appearances in the upcoming volumes, I want to know more about him.

Arata is just so awkward :D
And shout out for all these supporting characters, new rivals and even one-time appearances for being fully realized, with personality and tricks up their sleeves without feeling overpowered or just carbon copies from past players. Suetsugu really gives you a lot of variety in the characters, not just in age or gender.

Pretty exciting volume. You are introduced to a couple of new characters and you get to learn more about them. There's some unresolved tension between some characters, and the story is mostly following Chihaya through the tournament, but there is not as much focus on introspection for her as in the last volume. Definitely a more exciting, snowballing volume.

another reunion for the best trio !!! but thats where my excitement end unfortunately😞😞 dont get me wrong i still liked this volume but it felt like it was so much of that like transition phase where nothing was truly happening. i liked the match between chihaya and lillica but shes still getting to that point of realization ( being that her speed isnt everything )

but what was the most surprising to me was that suou was shown in this volume ??? i just recently watched the episode in the anime and since none of that was included i was really taken aback, i can only assume that the anime went more for an approach that made him seem like an enigma. anyway rant over bye see you in like an hour for volume 8.
