I read Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks as part of my English Literature course. I found the novel compelling and very powerful. Faulks uses vivd descriptions and an unusual format to switch between different eras in different chapters. This was very effective and i found the book easy to read and hard to put down. Definately one of the best books i have read in a while!
5 stars to Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks! I was deeply moved by this book and cried many times throughout reading it. It is the story of a young Englishman which starts a couple of yrs prior to World War 1 and continues through the war. It actually starts out as an erotic love story so grabs you right at the beginning. The story then becomes wound together in his experiences throughout the war. I don't think i have read a novel which brings the horrors of war and its effect on the human spirit to such a truthful honest depiction. This is definitely a MUST-READ book for anyone. I could not put this one down from the moment I picked it up i cannot say enough how moved I was by this book! Definitely will seek other books by this author.
I love Seb Faulks, he always appears to be so well researched in everything he writes. His stories have substance and the characters are so well formed that often I find myself passionately involved in conversation with them after a session. Of all these books Birdsong has to be my favourite, I was dragged kicking and screaming through the horrors of life in the trenches of the first world war. This should be placed on every secondary schools reading list.
Birdsong is an amazing novel. Its a novel which you might prefer reading again and again. War,love and death;3 themes on which sebastian faulks holds a great command through out the novel. Its a magnificant read!!!!
BIRDSONG is one of the most compelling of the several excellent novels set in World War One. The horrors of the trenches vs. courage, resiliance and the power of love. This novel rises to the same high level as Pat Barker's trilogy set in WW1. I've read it twice and will read it again.
I read it a long time back (more than a decade back actually) and found it quite nice back then. I have it in paperback, not sure I can go back to it though.
