Sankarankutty Kunhiraman Pottekkatt (Malayalam: ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി കുഞ്ഞിരാമന്‍ പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട്), popularly known as S. K. Pottekkatt, was a famous Malayalam writer from Kerala, South India. He is the author of nearly sixty books which include ten novels, twenty-four collections of short stories, three anthologies of poems, eighteen travelogues, four plays, a collection of essays and a couple of books based on personal reminiscences. Pottekatt won the Jnanpith Award in 1980 for the novel Oru Desathinte Katha (The Story of a Locale). His works have been translated into English, Italian, Russian, German and Czech, besides all major Indian languages.

This book have been in my father's book shelf for the last nine or ten years,but I was not at all interested in reading a travelogue. My rationale is like, travels are to be experienced, not to be read, but 'Kappirikalude Nattil' had transformed my thoughts. Can I too gather these much information and stories about the places in Africa, when I made a travel there, as S.K Pottekadu did.I doubt.

His enthusiasm for understanding a city/place in its complete essence made this book a classic one.

The portion in which he described about 'Victoria Water Falls' was my favourite pages in the book.

"നല്ല നിലാവുള്ള ഒരു രാത്രിയില്‍, ഞാന്‍ സഞ്ചരിച്ചിരുന്ന തീവണ്ടി ലിവിങ്ങ്സ്ടന്‍ റെയില്‍വേ സ്റ്റേഷന്‍ അപ്പുറമുള്ള സാമ്ബസിപ്പാലം കടക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് വിക്ടോറിയ വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഭാഗം ആദ്യമായി ദര്‍ശിച്ചത് . ജലപാതത്തിന്റെ അനുസ്യൂതമായ ആരവം കുറെ മുന്‍പ് തന്നെ കേട്ടുതുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു, തീവണ്ടി പാലം കയറിയപ്പോള്‍, പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ഭാഗത്ത്‌ അര ഫര്‍ലോങ്ങ്‌ അകലെയായി, നിലാവില്‍ പാല്‍ കുടം മറിക്കുമ്പോലുള്ള ഒരു കാഴ്ച്ച! കുറച്ചു നേരം കഴിഞ്ഞു അത് മറഞ്ഞു പോവുകയും ചെയ്തു."

Hats off to his courage and will power to made this adventurous journey possible, I used the word 'adventurous' because of the time period he used to travel.
With out the help of GPS and Google map, he made a journey where the majority of the natives did not understand his language.:)

But in the book I did not find a decent route map he travelled so I have to refer google map and an atlas constantly to get a better understanding about his journey.

This travelogue was published in 1951 based on the author's first overseas travel in 1949, to Africa. He catalogues his journeys through erstwhile Tanganica (part of present day Tanzania), Nyasaland (present day Malawi), Portugeuse East Africa (present day Mozambique) and Southern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe).

The start of the book is an introduction to human races and civilizations, and how the natives in Africa had evolved through very barbaric circumstances. With this reason in hand, the author goes on to unapologetically deprecate the natives, as to how stupid, ruthless and unambitious they have become. This was a bit off-putting, and this vein of racist, elitist comments flow through the rest of the book.

The fact remains that the native people in Africa will seem uncivilized to a person from an erstwhile British colony, but they still have to be treated with dignity. Of course, this would have been plausible if the traveler was in Africa only for a short while, but the author spent months there, and he seems to have imbued the local norms, and flamboyantly displayed them through his prejudiced, personal style of writing.

The journey begins at Beira, Mozambique, and the author takes a train journey from there to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, through Mutare and Harare. He describes the sardine-packed coach of the natives and his own coach which had no other occupants since the British considered it inferior. The author continues to Victoria falls in the Zambezi river that divides Zimbabwe from Zambia.

The second journey the author describes in the book starts from Blantyre, Malawi. Prior to that, he had spent a few days at the southern coast of Lake Malawi. From Blantyre he travelled the length of Malawi, then visited Mbeya and Dodoma in Tanzania. This journey featured buses and a lorry and a lot of adventures which the author either tells alongside or recounts.

The author reserves a chapter for the Swahili language spoken in many African nations and another chapter for Indians in Africa, the latter littered with many technicalities.

ഈ കൃതി നമ്മളെ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ വനാന്തരങ്ങളിലൂ ടെയും ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലൂടെയും കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നു. വായനക്കാരന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ വൻകരയുടെ ചിത്രം വരക്കുന്നു. ഈ നോവൽ ഒരു മികച്ച യാത്രാ വിവരണമാണ്.

വായിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ആഫ്രിക്ക മുഴുവൻ ചുറ്റിനടന്നു കണ്ട പ്രതീതി. ദൂരത്തിന്റേയും പണത്തിന്റേയും അളവുകോലാണ് എന്നെ ഏറെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടിച്ചത്. കാരണം അവയെല്ലാം പഴയതായിരുന്നു. ആഫ്രിക്കൻ ജനതയുടെ ജീവിതരീതികളും അവരെ മറ്റുള്ളവർ നോക്കിക്കാണുന്ന രീതിയും സ്പഷ്ടമായി രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട് ഈ യാത്രാവിവരണത്തിൽ. അവരുടെ വസ്ത്രവിധാനങ്ങളും അണിഞ്ഞൊരുങ്ങലുകളും ഇപ്പോഴും ഒരു മാറ്റവും വന്നിട്ടില്ല എന്ന് ഈ പുസ്തകവുമായി ആഫ്രിക്കൻ ഉൾനാടുകളിലെ ആളുകളുടെ ഇന്നത്തെ ചിത്രവുമായി തട്ടിച്ചുനോക്കുമ്പോൾ മനസ്സിലാകും. എല്ലാത്തിലും ഉപരിയായി ഇന്ത്യൻ ജനത ആഫ്രിക്കയിൽ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകളും ഇതിൽ കാണാം. അതിൽ തന്നെയും ഉത്തരേന്ത്യക്കാരും ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യക്കാരും തമ്മിൽ ജാതിയുടെ പേരിൽ കാണിക്കുന്ന അകൽച്ച നമ്മളെ അല്പം അലോസരപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.

എന്നെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ വിഷമിപ്പിച്ചത് നരഭോജികളായ ആഫ്രിക്കക്കാരെ പറ്റി വായിച്ചപ്പോഴാണ്. മനുഷ്യമാംസം കഴിക്കുവാനുള്ള കൊതി കാരണം സ്വന്തം കുഞ്ഞിനെ പോലും തിന്ന സ്ത്രീയെ പറ്റി വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ അറിയാതെ ഞാനൊന്നു ഞെട്ടി. അതുമാത്രമല്ല ഇതുപോലെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ പല കാര്യങ്ങളും ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ വളരെ വിശദമായി പ്രതിപാദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഒരു യാത്രാവിവരണം വായിച്ചതിനേക്കാൾ ഒരു യാത്ര ചെയ്ത അനുഭവം ലഭിക്കുകുക എന്നത് ഒരു വായനക്കാരന്റെ ഭാഗ്യമാണ്... എത്ര detailed ആയിട്ടാണ് കഥാകൃത് തന്റെ അനുഭവങ്ങളും നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങളും ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കാപ്പിരികളുടെ നാടിന്റെ ഒരു collection of datas ആയി ഈ കൃതിയെ വിലയിരുത്താം ... എന്നെ വളരെ സ്വാധിനിച്ച കൃതികളിൽ ഒന്നായി ഞാൻ ഇതിനെ കരുതുന്നു. ഒരു architect എന്നാ രീതിയിൽ ഈ കൃതി എനിക്ക് എന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ വരാനിരിക്കുന്ന യാത്രകളെ എങ്ങനെ നോക്കികാണണം എന്നും എങ്ങനെ തൊട്ടറിയണം എന്നും മനസ്സിലാക്കിത്തരുന്നു... യാത്ര ഇഷ്ടപെടുന്ന വ്യക്തിയും അതിലുപരി യാത്രകൾ താത്പര്യം കാണിക്കാത്ത വ്യക്തികളും ഈ കൃതി വായിക്കണം... മനസ്സിനോട് ഒരു പാട് ചേർന്ന്‌ നിൽക്കുന്ന കൃതി... ഇപ്പോഴും ദൃശ്യങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിൽ മായാതെ നില്���ുന്നു.. നന്ദി

Excellent book . Very interesting .I was really walking through Nyasaland and its countryside talking with the natives in their own language. In an age when technology had not been developed enough , a man from the land of Kerala set off for viewing the world and wrote about what he had experienced through his journey and transited the same to the readers without losing a single particle of it, is really the dexterity that a write must require and that could only be possible to the writer like our dearest S.K , the great writer of Malayali land. We are very proud of S.K, our dearest writer.

വളരെ വൈകിയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചത്. വളരെ മനോഹരവും ലളിതവുമായ അവതരണം. നർമ്മങ്ങളും, സങ്കൽപ്പങ്ങളും, യാഥാർഥ്യവും ഇടകലർത്തിയുള്ള യാത്രാ വിവരണം. ഇന്നിപ്പോൾ എഴുപത്തഞ്ചു വര്ഷം പുറകിലേക്ക് പോയി ഇത് വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ, ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ ഒരു തനി ചിത്രം നമ്മുടെ ഉള്ളിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോകുന്നുണ്ട്. അന്ന് സഞ്ചരിച്ച, വിവരിച്ച സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലെ, സാമൂഹിക, സാമ്പത്തിക സാഹചര്യങ്ങൾ ഇന്ന് വളരെയധികം മാറിയിട്ടുണ്ടാകാം. അതെല്ലാം, വികസനത്തിന്റെയോ, സാമൂഹികമായാ ഉന്നമനത്തിന്റെയോ വഴിയിൽ കുറെ പോയിട്ടുണ്ടാകും. അന്നത്തെ ആ യാത്ര ,, യാത്ര ചെയ്യാനുള്ള കടമ്പകൾ, ആശയവിനിമയത്തിലെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ട്, ഇന്ത്യക്കാരനോടുള്ള വിവേചനങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം വളരെ വിശദമായി വിവരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഈ യാത്ര ഒരു സഞ്ചാരമല്ല, മറിച്ചൊരു ആത്മസമർപ്പണത്തിന്റെ ഏടുകളായിട്ടാണ് വായിക്കുന്നവർക്ക് അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നത്. എല്ലാവരും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട നല്ലൊരു പുസ്തകം!

Excellent travelogue by a venerated writer from Kerala. But sadly, the author - like most people of his land in mid-20th century - refers to Africans using the Malayalam equivalent of the "N" word. This word is in the title of the book. No wonder a senior Politician in Kerala State recently used the "N" word and got away with it. To make it worse, another author E. M. Ashraf uses the same title to publish his travelogue in 2019. It was published by the popular newspaper Mathrubhumi. The people of Kerala have NOT been sensitized to get rid of racism and racist terms from their minds.

A reference about Africa during 1950s

Gives an insight about the life of African natives as well as Indian expats under the British rule, during 1950s. The author has provided much details as well as quoted instances wherever necessary.

1949 ഇൽ സ് കെ പൊറ്റക്കാട് നടത്തിയ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ യാത്രയും അതിന്റെ വിവരണവും ഒരു കഥ വായിക്കുന്നത്പോലെ വളരെ രസകരം ആയിരുന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ നമ്മുക് കാണാൻ പറ്റാത്ത പല കാഴ്ചകളും നമ്മളെ ഈ പുസ്തകം കാട്ടി തീരും. വളരെ മനോഹരമായ കഥ പറച്ചിൽ രീതിയും ആഗ്യനാവും.

Travelogues that are written by people from your culture who can relate sights of the world to things back home make for a refreshingly personal experience.

Had to bite through racial stereotypes and judgements of the 50s in this though.

Very good travelogue, giving an insight into Africa, its natural beauty, the ppl and how they are exploited. it waves some glimpse to the colonial period. And the courage of the author to travel to such places are really appreciable. He can be bit more descriptive. At some point I find he say a long story in just few words. But this will never take the beauty of the book. The last two chapters are absolutely awesome. it give many information of the life of Indian and African at that time. He efficiently point out the major problem India is facing because of the divide and rule policy of British. From the last few paragraph I found the importance of a national language. This is a thing just came to my mind while reading those paragraphs.

The begining of the book was interesting by characteristing a niegro but the middle portion bored (personal) after read 50 pages it becomes more interseting with some valuable information and it ended with giving a good experience and motivation to read his next "SIMHABHOOMI"
