Sankarankutty Kunhiraman Pottekkatt (Malayalam: ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി കുഞ്ഞിരാമന്‍ പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട്), popularly known as S. K. Pottekkatt, was a famous Malayalam writer from Kerala, South India. He is the author of nearly sixty books which include ten novels, twenty-four collections of short stories, three anthologies of poems, eighteen travelogues, four plays, a collection of essays and a couple of books based on personal reminiscences. Pottekatt won the Jnanpith Award in 1980 for the novel Oru Desathinte Katha (The Story of a Locale). His works have been translated into English, Italian, Russian, German and Czech, besides all major Indian languages.

നൈൽ നദിയുടെ ഉത്ഭവം മുതൽ അവിടുത്തെ പുരാതനവും ആധുനികവുമായ സംസ്കാരങ്ങളിലൂടെ പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട് നടത്തുന്ന ഒരു സഞ്ചാരമാണ് 'നൈൽ ഡയറി’. 1949 നവംബർ 9-ന് നൈൽ നദിയുടെ ഉത്ഭവസ്ഥാനത്ത് നിന്നു ആരംഭിച്ച്, ഉഗാണ്ട, സുഡാൻ, ഈജിപ്ത് തുടങ്ങി നൈലിലൂടെയുള്ള ഈ കപ്പൽ യാത്ര 1949-ൽ ആരംഭിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പതിനെട്ടു മാസം നീണ്ടുനിന്ന ആഫ്രിക്കൻ-യൂറോപ്പ് പര്യടനത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്.

സിംഹം, ആന,മുതല,കാണ്ടാമൃഗങ്ങൾ, മാൻ തുടങ്ങിയ വന്യമൃഗങ്ങൾ നിറഞ്ഞ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയും പ്രകൃതിയുടെ വന്യതയും കൂടാതെ, നൈലിന്റെ തീരത്തുള്ള പല ചെറിയ ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലും ആദിവാസി കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലും അദ്ദേഹം സന്ദർശിക്കുകയും, താമസിക്കുകയും അവിടുത്തെ ജീവിതരീതികൾ നേരിൽ കാണുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആഫ്രിക്കൻ വനങ്ങളിലൂടെയും പുൽമേടുകളിലൂടെയും നൈൽ നദിയുടെ ഗതിക്കനുസരിച്ചുള്ളതായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഈ സാഹസിക സഞ്ചാരം. അന്നത്തെക്കാലത്തെ സൗകര്യങ്ങൾ വച്ച് നടത്തിയ ഈ സാഹസിക യാത്ര വളരെ വിസ്മയകരമാണ്.

കൂടാതെ കപ്പലിലെ സഹയാത്രികർ, നൈലിന്റെ തീരങ്ങളിൽ വസിക്കുന്ന വ്യത്യസ്ത ദേശക്കാരായ മനുഷ്യർ, അവർക്കിടയിലുള്ള സൗഹൃദം, മതത്തിനും ജാതിക്കും ദേശത്തിനും അതീതമായ മാനുഷിക ബന്ധങ്ങളും, ആതിഥ്യമര്യാദയും ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ മനോഹരമായി ആവിഷ്കരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. യാത്രാച്ചെലവുകളെ അന്നത്തെ സ്വർണ്ണവിലയുമായി (പവൻ) താരതമ്യം ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ വായനയ്ക്ക് പുതിയൊരു ചരിത്രമാനം നൽകുന്നു. 1954-ലാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം ആദ്യമായി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചത്.
