Sankarankutty Kunhiraman Pottekkatt (Malayalam: ശങ്കരന്‍കുട്ടി കുഞ്ഞിരാമന്‍ പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ട്), popularly known as S. K. Pottekkatt, was a famous Malayalam writer from Kerala, South India. He is the author of nearly sixty books which include ten novels, twenty-four collections of short stories, three anthologies of poems, eighteen travelogues, four plays, a collection of essays and a couple of books based on personal reminiscences. Pottekatt won the Jnanpith Award in 1980 for the novel Oru Desathinte Katha (The Story of a Locale). His works have been translated into English, Italian, Russian, German and Czech, besides all major Indian languages.

Not bad. The Egyptian kings and mummies parts were really interesting, as were some interesting observations, stories and histories of parts of Cairo and Alexandria.

Rest were boring.
But as always, an S.K book is an example of well researched travel writeup of places in those times which were considered modern at that time, but almost into the bucket of ancient for us today.

സഞ്ചാരസാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ ചക്രവർത്തിയായ എസ്. കെ. പൊറ്റെക്കാട് കയ്‌റോ, അലക്സാൻഡ്രിയ എന്നീ നഗരങ്ങളിൽ നടത്തിയ പര്യടനത്തിന്റെ വിവരണമാണ് ഈ ചെറിയ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ. തന്റെ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ യാത്രയുടെ അവസാനഖണ്ഡത്തിന് രാജകീയമായിത്തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹം അലക്സാൻഡ്രിയയിൽ തിരി താഴ്‌ത്തുന്നു.

പൊറ്റെക്കാടിന്റെ യാത്രകൾ മോഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നവിധം മൗലികത്വം നിറഞ്ഞതാണ്. 1952-ൽ നടത്തിയ ഈ യാത്രയുടെ വിവരണം 2017-ൽ വായിക്കുമ്പോഴും ലേഖകന്റെ അനുഭവങ്ങളുടെ ചൂടും ചൂരും നഷ്ടപ്പെടാതിരിക്കുന്നതും അതുകൊണ്ടാണ്. മറ്റൊരാൾ ചിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയ യാത്രാപദ്ധതികൾ നമ്മളിതിൽ കാണില്ല. താമസസൗകര്യം തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നതിൽ തുടങ്ങി, വിജനതയിൽ ബോധപൂർവ്വം ഇറങ്ങി വഴികണ്ടുപിടിക്കുന്നതുമൊക്കെ പൊറ്റെക്കാടിന്റെ കയ്യൊപ്പുകളാണ്.

കയ്റോയാണ് പ്രധാനമായും ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലെ പ്രതിപാദ്യം. ആയിരക്കണക്കിനു വർഷങ്ങൾ പഴക്കമുള്ള പിരമിഡുകളും അതിനുള്ളിൽ അടക്കം ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ള മൃതശരീരങ്ങളുമാണല്ലോ കയ്‌റോയുടെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണങ്ങൾ! ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികൾ പ്രതിവർഷം അങ്ങോട്ടേക്കൊഴുകിയെത്തുന്നതും ഈ നഗരത്തിന്റെ മൃതാവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾ കാണാൻ വേണ്ടി മാത്രമാണ്. എന്നാൽ പൊറ്റെക്കാട് അവയ്ക്കുമപ്പുറം കയ്റോ നഗരിയുടെ ജീവിക്കുന്ന, തുടിക്കുന്ന ഹൃദയം നമുക്കു കാട്ടിത്തരുന്നു. നഗരത്തിലെ ചന്തകളും, ജനസമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ആഘോഷങ്ങളും, രുചിഭേദങ്ങളുമെല്ലാം ആ തൂലികയിൽനിന്ന് ചിറകടിച്ചുയരുന്നു. ഗ്രന്ഥകാരനിലെ കാല്പനികൻ ഈജിപ്ഷ്യൻ വനിതകളുടെ കവിൾത്തടങ്ങളിലെ തുടുപ്പും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാതെ പോകുന്നില്ല!

ഒരുമാസക്കാലം കയ്‌റോയിൽ താമസിച്ചുനടത്തിയ യാത്രകളുടെ ഒരു നല്ല വിവരണമാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം കാഴ്ച വെയ്ക്കുന്നത്. വിഖ്യാതമായ ഈജിപ്ഷ്യൻ മ്യൂസിയത്തിലേക്കുള്ള സന്ദർശനവും അവിടത്തെ കാഴ്ചവസ്തുക്കളുടെ പ്രത്യേകതകളുമെല്ലാം വിശദമായിത്തന്നെ വായിക്കാം. ഈജിപ്ത് രാജാവായിരുന്ന ഫാറൂഖിന്റെ വികൃതികളും സരസമായി വർണ്ണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പൊറ്റെക്കാടിന്റെ യാത്ര നടന്നതിന്റെ തൊട്ടടുത്ത വർഷം തന്നെ ഈ രാജാവ് പട്ടാള അട്ടിമറിയിലൂടെ നീക്കം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു.

കയ്റോകത്തുകൾ എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ബാക്കി ഭാഗമാണിത്. 1950കളിൽ ഈജിപ്തിലേക്ക് നടത്തിയ യാത്രയുടെ വിവരണമാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. ഈജിപ്തിലെ ഫറവോ മാരുടെ ചരിത്രം മുതൽ 1950 ലെ ഫാറൂഖ് രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെ പതനം വരെ കാര്യങ്ങൾ വിശദമായി വിശദീകരിക്കുന്നു. സാധാരണക്കാരുടെയും രാജാക്കന്മാരുടെയും ദൈനംദിന ജീവിതത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും അവർ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന വ്യത്യസ്ത ഭാഷകളെക്കുറിച്ചും അറിയുമ്പോൾ വായനക്കാർ അതിശയപ്പെടും. പിരമിഡിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തിനോടൊപ്പം ക്ലിയോപാട്രയും ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലൂടെ നമ്മളെ ആകർഷിക്കും.
