I wish the “understanding _____” books came with more nuanced teachings and understandings of disorders -for a lack of a better term- I’m really tired of reading books about bpd as if we are this delicate bomb of a crazy monster who takes no accountability nor takes initiative to repair. Most of the ppl I know who live with bpd are the most caring and understanding ppl who have taught me a lot about my own bpd and also how to communicate effectively and hold each other with radical accountability and with care.

My own opinions on the mental health industrial complex are very tied to the way my community members and I have been let down and mistreated. A lot of therapists won’t even work with folks who live with bpd. Western practices of therapy and care are not collective and very isolating. Especially when you have bpd, autism, etc…

Ofc don’t get me wrong, people who live with bpd and ppl in general should hold space for repair, accountability, etc AND I also think neurotypical folks should come from a more understanding place bc someone who is in a triggered place/state, that doesn’t come from nowhere. Radically being in community together and talking about this with gentleness and regard of the other persons feelings takes a lot of time and practice but it’s worth it.

I gave this a 3/5 bc I agree with some things but I don’t like how there are barley any examples of real life folks who struggle/live with bpd. Needs a more nuanced approach and different language esp talking about bpd..

read this!! if you know nothing about the disorder.

i don't necessarily agree with everything, but i can overlook that for the simple fact that this book is ~~extremely~~ valuable for introducing people to the disorder.

and hopefully stops their demonization. helps them find empathy. compassion. understanding. patience. maybe convinces doctors/therapists that the diagnosed deserve treatment outside of Seroquel.

just a thought.
