Read several times, loved it.

Enjoyed it far more than I expected. Grand Admiral Thrawn is a terrifying villain that was sent to the outskirts of the empire by Palpatine, thus avoiding capture and death when the Empire initially fell. His mission was to subdue and control the most remote and furthest points of the Empire. A nearly impossible task that Thrawn accepted and executed with cold logic. A mastermind in manipulation, he quickly collected the fragments of the Empire leftover after their defeat at Endor and have spent 5 years causing trouble for the Rebellion trying to reestablish the Old Republic.
Meanwhile, Luke, Leia, and Han are traveling all of the galaxy trying to establish diplomatic relations with planets that were hurt during or after the Empire's reign. Multiple kidnapping attempts force Leia to go into hiding with the intention of working on her jedi training. Luke struggles with his role as teacher and protector to Leia. And Han is disgruntled that he is frequently pushed aside from his friend and wife by forces outside of his control. Oh yeah, Leia is pregnant with force sensitive twins.
What i find most impressive with this story is how well Timothy Zahn keeps all the stories straight and weaves them together. Our three main characters are separated for a significant portion of the book and we also follow Thrawn, Mara Jade, wookies, and more. It was a plot i found hard to put down once I got into it (and having a fast approaching library due date helped).
For anyone a fan of the original trilogy, even casual fans, I would recommend this first volume of the Thrawn trilogy. It is very much in the spirit of George Lucas' vision and world. Though I must admit that the Han character struggles to capute Harrison Ford's on screen charisma but still enjoyable. Further endorsements of the other two books are TBD.
