English review:
This is the true story of the robbing and killing of 84-year old lonely farmer Daniel. His nephew Chris was summoned as a witness at the trial, where the young gang that robbed and killed the old man, his uncle Daniel. And for what? A measly packet of money. 18-year olds with no money, with no goals in life and with problem behaviour at home, at school and without a job. The author wrote this book to lake all of the readers witnesses of a crime committed out of sheer desperation, under influence of peer pressure and without a genuine feeling of guilt. He wants us all to know that there are a thousand ‘Daniels’, older men and women living in solitary at home (something this pandemic has made even worse in a lot cases) and although, like Daniel, not everyone has the need to be friends with everyone, to die as an animal after being beaten and then burnt (alive??) like he did is no way to die! There’s not the slightest bit of dignity!
This is a strong telling by Chris de Stoop! His language is very compelling. He confronted the youth, before and after the trial. And he doesn’t really point a finger of blame to them, but he does point a finger to a general issue!
This happened in 2014, in Saint-Léger (a small village on the border with France) but it could happen anywhere! (I kind of feel this book also needs a French translation soon!)
This left me wondering, left me with a hole in my heart and made me think about the fact that there are so many people alone, lonely and a lot of these die all by themselves (sometimes only being found dead weeks later! Yes, this happens!!) so if you know an elder person in your neighbourhood, please go and ask once in a while if they might need something, or some help!
