Vivre avec ChatGPT

Rate this book

In his book "Living with ChatGPT", Alexandre Gefen tells the story of ChatGPT, describing how years of collective human intelligence resulted in the creation of artificial intelligence.

From Heron of Alexandria’s first-ever vending machine in 125 CE, all the way to the Droz family’s musical, drawing, and writing automata in the late 18th century (to list only a few), humankind has been fantasizing about a tool that would allow it to focus less on repetitive bodily tasks and more on creative intellectual processes.

Gefen describes how Large Language Models are the result of years of technical and scientific evolution. These models are designed to simulate human thoughts using complex mathematical calculations, resulting in the so-called “distributional semantics,” which gives us the illusion of understanding human language. The book also discusses challenges such as cognitive laziness, labor displacement, and ethical dilemmas etc. Nevertheless, he suggests a smart way to embrace this technology and encourages humans to develop the “art of the prompt” to get the best out of it. Through thought experiments, the writer playfully chats with ChatGPT, challenges it, and pushes its boundaries.

To recommend this read, here's a quote: “The boundaries that ChatGPT is already pushing in our lives are, first and foremost, those of ignorance, silence, and misunderstanding. They are also, perhaps, those of banality: since ChatGPT can perform intellectual tasks that are the most ordinary and impersonal better than we can, it is up to us to be smarter, more inventive, and more sensitive… In a sense, while ChatGPT will make us conserve our energy for ordinary tasks, it will demand immense creativity from us in return. ChatGPT gives back the humanity it takes away elsewhere."
