Matt Chandler is the lead pastor of The Village Church, a multi-campus church in the Dallas metroplex of over 10,000 people. His sermons are among the topselling (free) podcasts on itunes and he speaks at conferences worldwide. Prior to accepting the pastorate at The Village, Matt had a vibrant itinerant ministry for over ten years where he spoke to hundreds of thousands of people in America and abroad about the glory of God and beauty of Jesus. He lives in Texas with his wife, Lauren, and their three children: Audrey, Reid and Norah.
I really liked this book! Matt does an overview study of the Song of Solomon. He’s candid in his writing about attraction, courtship, intimacy, marriage and arguing. His audience is mainly for married people but he also writes to the single who desires marriage. I wasn’t fully aware what angle he was going to approach this book and his forwardness was something unexpected but totally appreciated!
There’s something deeper at play behind our marriages. There’s something that has been interwoven since the beginning of time that has been designed to reveal the grace, mercy, and love of an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-good Father in heaven. Diving into the Song of Solomon, this is what Matt Chandler explores in The Mingling of Souls.
I’ve read several books on marriage before and many of them offer timeless wisdom; however, this one, by going verse by verse through the ultimate wisdom literature on marriage, touches a cord in the soul that isn’t often encouraged. We are sanctified, grown, nurtured, challenged, and so much more in our marriages that we didn’t expect at the beginning. I personally have felt overjoyed and lonely at the same time. Grateful and hurt at the same time. Are these challenges and the back-and-forth of marriage normal for me to experience?
The answer to this is yes. Matt, as he often does in our weekend church service, uses scripture to open our eyes to what the Lord is calling us into. There is so much hope and encouragement in the words of scripture if we just pay attention and so many times I feel lost in my day-to-day relationship with my wife but this read shines a light on what’s important and allows me to be a joyful, glad follower of Jesus that leads my family well.
I know my summary doesn’t do it justice, but I would recommend this read to anyone in a romantic relationship that is looking to grow in their love of Jesus.
I recommend this for the Christian couples!! Loved reading this together with my boyfriend. It is based off the Songs of Solomon and the relationship wisdom it provides. Each chapter opens up so many great chats and offers practical advice for those pursuing a Christ-centered marriage. Super approachable and applicable for anyone.
love love love more Talks all about sex, marriage, and the gospel which is just something I love reading about. I felt like I could possibly relate to certain things in the future in my marriage and so I think it will be a good tool for my future marriage.
Incredible perspective on Marriage! I love that he uses the Song of Solomon to share the purpose of love, sex, and marriage. Matt Chandler uses a lot of personal stories allowing the readers to connect with him and overall relate to what he shares. Excellent read!
First third of the book felt very applicable for me. The rest of it was well said and I enjoyed how he wrapped it up with applications that everyone could work on even before marriage.
