I enjoy fantasy and I enjoy mystery, so when both are in one book, I'm absolutely going to read it. Although Madison was initially a dislikable character, selfish, self-centered, and obnoxious, her character matured drastically when she received her deceased brother's 5 y.o. daughter Katie to care for. It wasn't fast, but what is?
She has to pick up Katie on a military base in San Diego on the coast. The civilian scientist housing is at the bottom of a hill near an old lighthouse. The houses are decrepit shacks, but she only has to stay long enough to work her way through the bureacratic process of retrieving her niece and packing up. Of course, nothing goes as planned, but she does meet a lovely scientist, Alice Piper, who lives in another shack. Strange and weird things happen to both women and Katie, and quite a few people, some creepy, want Katie. There are a lot of people coming through, but oddly enough, no military members. It gets scary and dangerous, but the women step up and get themselves and Katie out. All the loose threads eventually get tied up.
Athough the b00k was published over a dozen years ago, it doesn't feel dated.
