I really enjoyed this book, especially the two main characters. Nina Strident is almost killed in a car accident, saved by the otherworldly Yalen, who goes against the rules of his world and fate to rescue her. Stephanie Ingram had me hooked on Yalen at the start. He's mysterious, heroic and honorable. It took me a bit longer to warm up to Nina (especially when she allows her father to try to push her into a romance with a childhood friend) but I suspect that was intended. I got to see Nina grow as an individual. She did the right thing, made the right choices (sometimes with consequences)and developed as a strong character through each obstacle placed in her path - - and this is not a girl with simple hurdles to overcome!

Initially, I thought I was going to be reading a book about a star-crossed love affair, but there is much more than romantic-longing to The Between World. It's a multi-layered tale, ripe with mystery, including several twists and turns that caught me by surprise. The plot elements take off by the middle of the book and build upon each other with break-neck speed. I remember being frustrated when I had to call it a night and stop reading because I wanted to see what happened next!

I loved the author's prose, particularly when describing the feelings Nina and Yalen have for each other, all beautifully told. I certainly hope there is a planned sequel for this novel because I am eager for the story of Yalen and Nina to continue.

I'm not normally into the whole paranormal thing, the last books even remotely close to this one being some old school Christopher Pike, but this was a pretty damn good book. I was captivated the whole time, frustrated for answers much like Nina was, wanting to know the answers and very tempted to fall into the old bad habit of reading the last line of the book so I'll know what I'm getting myself into. I'm glad I didn't, because as much as the "not knowing" was driving me insane, the journey was worth the ending.

After finishing this book, I'm still not sure what the heck was going on! I'm also not sure if it ended or not. If this is a stand alone book, it's a 2 star because it didn't explain ANYTHING that was happening and seemed to make characters appear and disappear without explaination. If it's the beginning of a series or even the first of two books, it's a 4 star because it has me asking "what the heck!? It's not the end, is it!?". I read and re-read and I'm still not sure what I read. I never got attached to the characters, I felt like I was given a "nearly done" novel... all the author has to do go back and elaborate.

I don't know what the hell I just read. After getting halfway thru, I started skimming thru it very quickly. Maybe these kind of fantasy books are not for me. My only wish now - get back my time I wasted on it.

Ms Ingram has the great ability to let you uncover the story with her characters. That sounds like an obvious statement, but I have read books recently that are bilingual. First the author tells you everything and ensures the character follows a map to reach that end.
