High above the heavy air, the March People and the winged Drak met where the two suns crossed: locked in a battle as old as the ritual of life itself. For Amarson and his fierce lady Ameera, to live was to kill Drak; to die was nothing. That was the Law—until the long-winged Flier came, riding the crest of the thermocline….

In this masterful science fantasy adventure, S. Kye Boult has created a world that is both grippingly intense and luminously strange.

Solo Kill by S. Kye Boult is one of my favorite books and I try to re- read it at least once a year. It is a science fantasy about a planet with two suns, a yellow and a red giant and several intelligent forms of life. One of them, the Drak, which has wings and beaks like a bird , hunts and eats all the other forms of life. The March people, tall with retractable claws, the river people , small and water loving and the Valley people small with tails. According to the Ancient Compact the March people fight the Drak to protect the others. The others supply the food, and machines, crops from the Valley people and fish and weapons from the River people who are the artisans and engineers. The River people supply bi-wing planes and a new weapon- compressed air dart throwers.
The story is about the Baron Leon Amarson of the March people and his fight to keep the Drak of off His people and the others.
Then one of the new weapons the river people give him works too good and there are no more Drak in the skies. Until they go around a previously unexplored mountain range and find a great plain stretching out under the two suns, and Draks and mysterious long winged fliers.

I read this book back in 1977/78 and I remember it as one of my favorites! I have kept the book all these years just because I remember loving the story so much.
