The local movie theater is hosting Horrorfest - two days of back-to-back monster movies. Malcolm and Dandy can't wait to see their favorite horror classics up on the big screen. But the spine-tingling chills continue even after the movies end. The Wolfman, The Fly, and King Kong have escaped their black and white films and are after Malcolm and Dandy! After much ducking and dodging, the boys discover that it's more than cinema magic. The secret lies behind the small window of the theater's projection booth. Calico Chapter Books is an imprint of Magic Wagon, a division of ABDO Group. Grades 2-5.

I'm the author of literally (get it) dozens of books for children.

Born in Killeen, Texas on a cold January day in 1954. My family moved around a lot, allowing me to, over the years, live on a farm, in an historic home and always near rivers or bayous. My playthings were hula-hoops, old typewriters and a wooden leg named Charlie. (Yep, you read that right.) If you want a true glimpse of my childhood dreams, read my novel, Man in the Moon. The character Janine allows you inside my young mixed-up mind.

I’ve lived most of my life in Houston and still live there today. You’ll find me here reading, writing and smiling.

Hmmm. I got the feeling that the ideas for this series are running a little low now, twelve books into it. It still had funny moments (we laughed and laughed as I read it, but that was more due to our commentary as we tried to make Grandma Eunice the mastermind behind everything... I love reading aloud for exactly the reason that it becomes an immediately shared experience, one where one person's reaction changes even how the story is read) and moments of suspense, but the ending was too fast -- very unsatisfying -- and the some of the logic was weak enough to be troubling to me as a reader. I'll probably read one more, if one more gets written, but it seems like 11 books might have been a good place to end the series. Maybe book 13 will be something special, though.
