I have come to value the Insight Guide series when I am planning a trip to a place that I do not know much if anything about being a tourist in. I relied heavily on it for a trip to the Baltics, which I had a childhood fascination with and wanted to see them, but had almost no idea how to pick sites and how to organize an itinerary. Worse yet, my spouse did not have this same burning desire, panicking me a bit when he said, "Tell me again why we are going there?" So, the stakes were high, and the guide helped me out immeasurably. A short trip to Vietnam will inherently miss a lot that the country has to offer. There are many historic sites, too many to see if you are not spending weeks in country. Then there is the history of both colonialization and war, which you may or may not want to delve into. The vastness of the country with so many cool places to go poses challenges for the tourist, and this guide helps to untangle that.
