Stark Enterprises has unleashed the Infinite Engine, which promises to be an energy source unlike anything ever seen before. But saboteurs from both A.I.M. and Hydra have set their sights on the engine as well--along with Dr. Doom. When a respected scientist is killed and the Engine taken over, Spiderman and Iron Man join forces to safeguard the Infinite Engine--and all of humanity.
As a young man, Mr. Askegren took part in his parents high-wire circus act until an accident stopped that career for him at age 11. He acquired a love of comic books and of writing in general, which he turned into a profession. In addition to the Alias book, he wrote several books based on comic book series such as Spider-Man and Iron Man. He died of a heart attack at age 51.
Doom's Day was an interesting trilogy that of Marvel prose novels, each volume being written by different authors. This second one isn't quite as enjoyable as the initial volume, in my opinion, but it's a good adventure. Peter teams up with Iron Man this time, and it's Stark Enterprises vs. A.I.M. & Hydra... not to mention Victor is still pulling the strings in the background. Peter's quips aren't quite as sharp as usual, but his relationship with Tony is well drawn. Excelsior, True Believers!
Why is it that every Marvel team up novel has the titular characters barely spend time together. I don't understand.
One thing that I found interesting that I haven't seen much comics touch upon but this novel does, is the general lack of trust between superheroes on the outskirts like Spider-Man and the superheroes more on the "straight" path, like Iron Man, and what happens when two people are on on the same side but don't know each other well. There's a moment where
I saw a lot of reviews stating that you can't read this book unless you've read the first book. That's not true. It does reference the first book but not in a way that you can't enjoy the read of this book and get it's own story and loose from the series. For me, It makes me want to buy the first book and as the end of this book teases, gives a lead to the third book of this series. Two thumbs up for how the writer created this Marvelous series.
This book is a sequel to Doom's Day book 1 Rampage. While this book has a few questionable decisions made by some characters, I actually enjoyed this one more.
Pros Very high stakes and even a taste at what could happen to earth if our heroes don't succeed.
All the new and returning characters are written very well.
The masterminds behind all the chaos are well written and seem threatening even when they are no where near the action.
Iron Man has a variety of great and heroic Scenes in this book.
Cons Again Spider-man is just there. There's really nothing he can do in this book that another Iron man couldn't.
There's no real fight in this novel, more like situations that get worse and worse.
Overall This book is definitely something I can see being really entertaining if your a big fan of Iron man. Spider-man has some good stuff at the beginning of the novel and good motivation to stop the villains, but in execution he's along for the ride. The book is written pretty well overall with the character interactions being top notch (especially between Spidey and Iron Man.). If you're a fan of Iron Man I would recommend this book. I bought this novel for like $5 so it's really only a time investment. As for Spidey fans, let's hope the next one does our boy right.
It was ok. If you enjoy Spider Man with a bit of Iron Man, then this was decent. The story was one of the better ones I've read, but never really grabbed me.
The first book was great, this one wasn't, nothing more than other typical superhero book.
(spoiler) Plot is poor... Tony Stark announced publicly that he created the Infinity Engine, something that could give all the energy that all the planet Earth would ever need. So that make it the perfect target for villains and terrorists.
So this powerful engine is in a space station with only 4 peoples inside... I would think a small army or a few battleships would guard it... but no, just 4 scientists (but all scientists are fits and combatants). I don't know you but I think I don't have enough characters left to make a list of all the menace in the Marvel Universe that can attack something in space... anyway, really poor thinking.
Peter Parker was working for one of the scientist who program the Infinity Engine that got kill by Hydra and that the main reason to bring him in space to avenge that death. He entered the building as Peter Parker and goes out as Spider-man... a building where top scientist working for Stark Industries without any security camera? It's a wonder Stark Inc didn't got all is work stolen with this level of security.
So you know they will go in space but but you got to read half the book before action starts. Iron man battles are not really good... always the same, he takes hits, always to the limits of the armor to finally win... no matter the punishment the armor takes, the gadget always worked when needed.
Spider-Man is not really funny in this book and didn't really shine by his action battling only small minions and stopping the Infinity Engineby turning a few knobs... turn 1/8 left? it makes more noises so he save the day turning it 1/4 right.
Baron Struker isn't an interesting character and Dr.Doom didn't have the same presence he got in the first book. The last chapter at least give hopes for the third books.
So just a superhero story that would have been good in the 60's or for kid but no flavor by today standard.
This is the second part of a trilogy but it can be read as a stand alone novel. In this book, Tony Stark has built The Infinity Engine which is a spaceship that will help provide limitless energy. Hydra and other baddies want possession of it and turn it into a weapon of destruction.
I liked the plot in this story and I enjoyed how the two heroes interact with other. The scientific explanation was a little much at times. I did think Spider-Man's quips weren't the best and I never really connected with Iron Man on this one. I think the problem with this book is the title was misleading. With Doctor Doom being in the title, I assumed he would have a major role but he was delegated as a minor character and never had a confrontation with our heroes (I was looking forward to this).
This was a straight forward minor adventure that did not have any major overtones that would affect the universe.
A fun team-up novel featuring Spider-Man and Iron Man facing down AIM and Hydra. With Doctor Doom in the background, trying to turn all the activity to his advantage. Longer review here: http://eyesandearsblog.blogspot.com/2...
