What the Mistress Did

Rate this book
"Oh, the delicious peril of deception "

Lady Marianne Gillingham has no intention of ending her affair with David Dunscombe, Earl Harrington, despite his pending nuptials. She craves his attentions, and he satisfies her deepest yearnings.

Yet, when his fiancee, the sweet, innocent and oh-so-very young Annabelle Frazier, appears on her doorstep to demand the end of the association, Marianne realizes she does not wish to be second in David s affections. She also cannot resist issuing a warning. The earl will bed his wife with tedious regularity, but never reveal his more "unusual" desires.

To Marianne s amusement, her prediction comes true, with a surprising twist. The countess is back with a new demand: repair the problem her prophetic words created. Taking pleasure in imagining the other woman s fear and horror, Marianne rekindles the affair to demonstrate exactly how to fulfill David s lascivious desires while Annabelle secretly watches from the shadows.

She never expected Annabelle to prove so resilient and surprisingly easy not to mention delicious to corrupt. Or that the ensuing erotic tangle would be impossible to put right without heartbreak.

Warning: Loosen your stays and have your fan at hand. Plumes and floggers, along with some other leather devices, were employed in the creating of this erotic tangle. Contains Georgian ladies behaving badly, often with each other. M/F/F, M/F, F/F action herein. "

Lady Marianne Gillingham is both irritated and amused when the virginal Miss Annabelle Fraiser demands that Marianne break off her affair with David, Lord Harrington. Marianne cedes the field but warns the soon-to-be Lady Harrington that her experience in the marriage bed will surely be unsatisfying, for David will never do to her what he has done with Marianne.

It’s not long after Annabelle and David wed that the new Lady Harrington is back – and furious with Marianne for awakening her to the deficiencies in her marriage. She asks Marianne to resume her relationship with David but with a twist; Annabelle will secretly watch and learn what she needs to know to please David. The sensual journey that Marianne and Annabelle soon embark on is nothing like either expects. But soon emotions and passion tangle, and Marianne wonders if it will be possible for any of them to leave this arrangement unscathed.

WHAT THE MISTRESS DID is erotica at its best; sensual, alluring and inventive. Author Anya Delvay takes readers on two journeys; Annabelle’s and Marianne’s. Under Marianne’s hands-on tutelage Anabelle’s sexual awakening carries WHAT THE MISTRESS DID through its darker moments. There’s joy in Annabelle learning what pleases her, and the caring friendship that develops between her and Marianne was wonderful to read. Marianne’s plot – and the overarching plot of the book – is tinged with sadness. She’s in love with David but clearly recognizes that she missed her opportunity to claim the whole of him. What made WHAT THE MISTRESS DID fascinating was watching Marianne essentially grow up over the course of the story.

It’s nearly impossible to write about WHAT THE MISTRESS DID without mentioning the sex scenes. Ms. Delvay writes vast and varied erotic encounters, some between David and Marianne and even more between Annabelle and Marianne. I love that no one holds back in WHAT THE MISTRESS DID.

WHAT THE MISTRESS DID isn’t a “happy” book, but it’s ultimately a satisfying read nonetheless. If you’re in the mood for historical erotica, then WHAT THE MISTRESS DID is for you.

I enjoyed this book Marianne is confronted by her lovers soon to be bride. David finds pleasure in Marianne, but he marries Annabelle. When Annabelle tells her to leave David alone she tells her that he will not find pleasure in her Annabelle doesn't believe her. Marianne stops her affair with David and he marries Annabelle anyway and she returns to Marianne for help when David won't teach her how to please him. This book is written from Marianne's POV I would have loved to get all three of there POV. Why Marianne only offered herself as a mistress to David and not a wife? How did Annabelle feel about going to his lover to learn how to please her husband? How did she feel about Marianne? And David why he was the way he was unwilling to think of his toward Marianne? And why didn't Marianne stay although I know it was hard for her she could have been there mistress. This was a good f/f/m

What a treat this book was. First, it’s extremely well written erotica. Written in first person present tense, the thoughts and feelings of the main character, Marianne, are deeply nuanced and expressed in a gorgeous way. Second, it’s a rare femdom D/s, BDSM story, which I like to read if well done. Third, it’s a historical f/f/m, which is also hard to find. What the Mistress Did was an all-around great read for me and lucky find.

The characters:

Marianne is an intriguing and complex character. I love getting in the head, very easy to do with first person present tense, of a character like her. On the surface she likes being in control of her relationship with David. She controls their sexual encounters and she knows he loves her. She’s a widow and doesn’t want to marry again, although it seemed any possibility of marriage was blocked from David’s side. When he becomes betrothed to Annabelle, Marianne knows they will not be able to continue, although deep down she’s not ready to settle on that idea yet.

When Annabelle shows up at her doorstep stating that David will be hers soon and that he won’t be coming around anymore, this becomes a challenge to Marianne to keep seducing and using her power over David. She’s not a generally good person on the surface, being deceptive and conniving and rather cool. However, as the story progresses and we get more insight into what Marianne is feeling and thinking, it’s clear that Marianne is an extremely passionate woman and she has deep, strong feelings of pain and conflict about her love of David and knowing that she will never totally be his. She’s also that rare self-reflective character who has a lot of insight into her own psychological motivations and takes responsibility for who she is. I liked that.

Marianne’s relationship with David: They have a rather complex relationship. It’s clear that they enjoy each other and he comes to her for comfort in a sexual way, although it’s clear it’s more than just a sexual thing for him by their interactions. When they have sex often Marianne won’t have an orgasm and it’s often controlled but very intense sex they have at times.

I don’t know what David really feels because we don’t get into his head, but it seems that he’s not too clear how things will go once he’s married. He seems willing to let Marianne go on the surface, but keep coming back.

Marianne’s relationship with Annabelle: Anabelle asks for help in pleasing David since it’s clear he doesn’t love her like he does Marianne. Marianne finds herself feeling strongly attracted to Annabelle as she teaches Annabelle about her body, what sex and orgasm feels like and how to please a man. They start a very erotic sexual affair on the side without David knowing. Over and above that, Marianne has Annabelle secretly watch through a screen when David comes to visit Marianne. It’s interesting that Marianne becomes more turned on by the idea of thinking about Annabelle watching, and fantasizes about sex with her when she’s with David.

Annabelle for her part grows and changes over the course of her interactions with Marianne. I loved her innocence and total trust and openness towards Marianne who in turn responds to that in deeply loving way.

It all culminates when David comes for a last visit and Marianne blind folds him, and she has Annabelle participate. The reaction to the deceit is interesting.

I think in most situations readers will not like the deceit part. But this is erotica, not romance, per se; it’s more about how these three people relate to each other within the sexual realm only. I felt a lot of love and passion from all of the characters was amply expressed, which actually made this story a much more positive experience.

The ending was my only complaint. Of course my expectation in erotica of an HEA or HFN is not there. However, it’s always a nice touch. In this case I felt the ending was appropriate to the people involved, but…they, all three, had an amazing chemistry, both in love and sex. I’ll leave it at that.

What the Mistress Did is a definite recommend from me. I would love to read some more (f/f, f/f/m) from this author.

As reviewed on kinkybookreviews.com:
Lady Marianne Gillingham is a widow having an affair with the Earl of Harrington, David Dunscombe. When Annabelle, David's young and innocent new fiancé, appears on her doorstep demanding that she end the affair, Marianne enjoys sharing a bit of information with the naive little Annabelle. She tells her that her husband will come to her bed every night, do his duty the same way every night, and she will always wonder what he's not sharing with her. Once Annabelle leaves, she decides that she doesn't want to be the other woman. Doing her best to ignore the pain it causes her, she ends the affair.

When the predictions come true, Annabelle is distraught and demands Marianne teach her how to please her husband. Wanting to see David happy, even if she's not, and liking the idea of corrupting the innocent, Marianne agrees and sets into motion a plan to introduce Annabelle to the darker side of sex. It works much better than she expects... and also puts her heart even more at risk.

I liked this book... and I hated this book. Does that make sense? I found the story very interesting and it flowed quite well. The sex scenes were hot and varied, which I like. I could relate to Marianne. Like her, I have reached the stage in my life where I think I must have eaten that box of chocolates. I was torn as to where I hoped the story went and as with most things, you hope for the best, expect the worst and what you get is well... a little bit of both.

The story is historical. That's not normally my cup of tea, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of this book. I do wish the book continued a little bit further. The ending felt a bit cut off. Kind of like the author had reached the end of her allotted words so she just wrapped it up. Some things to know depending on your comfort zone. There were a few BDSM scenes that were on the rougher side so if that's a problem for you, don't read this. There is both FemDom and MaleDom in the story.

This story is not light, airy, and smiles all around. However, it isn't overly dark either. Just make sure you are in the right mindset before starting. But do read it as it is a very good story. As this is the first book I've ever read by Anya Delvay, I've definitely added her to my watch list. If you wish to know more about her, please visit her website.

UPDATED TO ADD: Ok, I think the "I liked this book... and I hated this book" has been misunderstood by a few. I liked the book. What I hated was the fact that this story is true to life and well... life tends to be a bit disappointing in the long run and hurt is a common occurrence. That's NOT a knock against the author or the job she did on this book. The book is great and to be honest, any book that draws strong feelings from you, either way, is the mark of a well told story. The feelings it left me with were ... realistic. I generally read books to escape reality. Nevertheless, sometimes a little reality is a good thing. When I am in that mindset, I'd reach again for this book. Hopefully that helps clear some things up.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional reviewer, nor was I solicited for this review. My ebook was purchased at bn.com. I read and comprehended the entire text of this book at least 1 time prior to reviewing.

Spoiler Warning: My reviews generally contain spoilers. Please read with caution.

"What the Mistress Did" is probably some of the most elegantly written erotica ever penned. It stumbles mainly in its paltry storytelling outside the actual erotic content. Given the author's meticulous attention to world-building and successfully portraying the lives and times of passionate, hedonistic Georgian aristocrats, I can't help mourning the paltry plotting beyond the actual sex.

It's also worth noting this story lacks romantic elements and may not satisfy readers who prefer erotic love stories and HEA endings.

Despite its opulent prose, gorgeous description, and decent dialogue, I never found myself too engaged with this story. I blame that on the characters. I found Marianne's motives too inconsistent and I found Marianne herself pretty cold-blooded and unpleasant.

Also, I felt very confused about Marianne and Annabel's love for David because David's loveable qualities are never revealed in the narrative. I understand he's an aristocrat and a "valuable connection" and all that, but I couldn't picture him as worth all the conflict and competition between his wife and his mistress.

Annabel is probably the most sympathetic character, but (like all the other characters in the story) I couldn't understand her genuine attraction to David OR to Marianne. It seems every character in the story was romantically attracted to Marianne and Marianne herself was this cold, aloof, sociopathic type. I think if the story had demonstrated the two women sharing other interests besides sex and David, I might have seen it differently.

This is erotica woven into a tale of revenge featuring sexual intimacy as the primary weapon. The primary conflict is Marianne's inability to accept her relationship's end and the romantic stirrings she experiences as she seduces her lover's wife. It's readable, but it's far from light-hearted.

I’m not usually a fan of historical erotic romances; however, this one pleased me in many ways.

Lady Annabelle was the opposite of Marianne. She was warm, and passionate, and not afraid to show what she was thinking or feeling. She never hid behind masks. Where Marianne needed to dominate and to cause pain in order to feel pleasure, Annabelle was tender and submissive. As a couple, they were perfect for each other. Their love scenes ranged from sensual to hot, and always left this reader satisfied.

Although it was expressed that both women loved the same man, I felt there was also a truly deep emotional connection between the women. At the heart of the novella, this was a love story between two women, and the man was there mainly to supply his manly body parts.

I enjoyed this story very much and didn’t want it to end. It was an emotional read with great character development, a good plot, and amazing sex. The book carried me on a sensual and amazing journey right up to the last chapter. Without giving away the ending I'll simply say it wasn't what I expected or desired. After I finished the book, I actually checked out the author's website and blog just to see if there was any mention of a sequel for "What the Mistress Did". Sadly, I didn't find any plans for a second book. I really wish there would be a followup, as I'm dying to know what happens next.

All in all, this book contained out of this world sexiness, two heroines that were both very fun reads, a love story that came alive through the pages, and a rather realistic ending. This unique story was memorable and I recommend it to other historical erotic romance fans.

I was hoping this book would focus more on the relationship between the wife, husband and mistress, sort of like a polyamory situation.....not so much. It was sex, sex, and more sex but little plot or depth. I was very disappointed.

Not sure how to rate this. Somewhere between "not my kink" and "really good story." I'll try to write a longer review soon.
