China’s Long March to Capitalism

Rate this book
Reprint of the original document by the 2006 World Congress of the International Marxist Tendency. Bilingual pamphlet in Mandarin Chinese (simplified) and English.

From a Marxist point of view the 1949 Chinese Revolution, in spite of its bureaucratic deformations, was the second most important events in human history after the Russian Revolution. It led to the abolition of landlordism and capitalism and the end of imperialist domination. Now, however, capitalism dominates in China. How did this happen?

The original draft of this document was written in April 2006 and was then discussed and voted at the July 2006 World Congress of the IMT.

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve read China: From Revolution to Counterrevolution & I can’t remember if it covered what happened after Mao’s death & the restoration of capitalism. In any case, I think this is a great text to couple it with as there are misconceptions with those who think China isn’t capitalist & may or may not believe it is China is “Socialist with Chinese characteristics”, a notion long ago disproven.

This text, expertly uses the Marxist method to trace the development from the Chinese revolution of the 20’s to the revolution of ‘49 with the developments of Stalinism & the maneuvers of bureaucracy in China starting where the Russian Revolution ended & how its basis on that & the centrally planned economy led to the path China took to capitalist restoration. Many fall into the trappings of formal logic when characterizing many things which prevents them from understanding the forms of things & how though the development may be different, there is an underlying content which determined where things ultimately ended.

It’s a must read for those who want to understand China’s place in the current world situation today & what it means for the working class in China, the U.S. & globally.

Contains what's most necessary in order to understand why China is capitalist, the birth and the role of CCP as a bureaucratic party, the decline of bureaucracy, and the weaknesses of bureaucracy that led to the country's opening up to capitalism. The only thing I expected more about this is it needs more content to explain bureaucracy itself, which is limited by its nature as a booklet. The booklet does mention "The Revolution Betrayed" by Trotsky a lot, so I assume it's what must be read after this.
