In this book, Marilyn Chadwick teaches us how to have a deep and ongoing conversation with God, through prayer. This is a detailed teaching for building a structure or framework for your own daily prayer hour. I have to tell you, this book spoke right into my heart. I normally speed read and skim through books I will be reviewing, just so I can get the review written in a timely manner - but, I kept getting drawn into this book, and have read it from cover to cover. I will definitely be putting these tips into practice.
She first talks about the 6 steps required to develop a more effective prayer life, beginning with being alert to hearing God's voice around you, in everyday life. Whether He is speaking to you through friends, family, the tv, radio, newspapers or the Internet, we need to be listening for His call to pray for His people. Next she tells us we need to be specific in our prayers, and ask for exactly what we want. Then we must pray with authority, authority that is drawn from the scriptures, so reading the Word daily is an important part of the process. Next we should seek out prayer partners, to help us multiply our prayer's effectiveness. Be sure to arm yourself with spiritual strength, by keeping yourself and your life in good health and balance. Don't be afraid to find our strength in your weaknesses, though. And finally we are called to answer God's call to action and be willing to follow through on it.
The book also contains a 21-Day Prayer Experiment designed to draw you closer to God and hopefully help you build a habit of praying without ceasing. An 8-week Leader's Study Guide so you can share this framework of deeper prayer with your small group. A special A-List of Prayer Lifeline Scriptures that helped the author on her journey to a deeper, more effective prayer life. And finally an exhaustive list of resources to help those that want to go deeper into this study.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
What do we do when someone tells us that they need our prayers? Do we simply acknowledge their request and hope we'll remember to lift up their needs in prayer before the end of the day, or do we stop and send the prayer up right away?
Most of us have been asked to pray for someone in the course of our lives but very few have dedicated themselves to become a prayer warrior. Not just praying for the needs of people they know, but to go so far as to pray for people they don't know, states away, even for entire countries or the world. Yet in the book, Sometimes He Whispers, Sometimes He Roars, author Marilynn Chadwick was called to begin her journey into world wide prayer when 9/11 happened.
Inside the book she details her own experiences with prayer and how effective prayers can be achieved in a deeper level. She chronicles her own stories of what prayer has done in her lives and in the lives of those she has prayed for and in the end, you'll have a vision of just what your prayers can become.
I received the book, Sometimes He Whispers, Sometimes He Roars compliments of Howard Books compliments of Simon and Schuster for my honest review. When I agreed to review this book, I was looking for insight into enriching my own personal prayer life. Sometimes it seemed that my prayers lack a personal touch, a real connection between me and God and I needed help.
In this book, I learned some skills to really evaluate what I am praying for and how I need to become more effective. How to set aside some personal time and really get in touch with God during quiet time. I learned how Elijah, Peter, Paul and Jesus used prayer in their communication to God. We need to be alert, be specific and pray with authority as a believer in Christ and child of God. There are so many great tips on how to become an effective prayer warrior that anyone looking for help in this area of their lives, should get this book. I would rate it a 5 out of 5 stars and will be a resource book for me during the remainder of my own life as well as assisting others in their own prayers.

A small confession. When I first read the email synopsis of Marilynn Chadwick’s ‘Sometimes He Whispers… Sometimes He Roars’, I almost passed on the book. I mean… I didn’t really need another book on ‘how to pray’… I thought I was doing okay there.
Guess what happened?
God whispered to me. (Ouch!)
I read the book.

“I laughed… I cried… I fell in love…” I did all of this and more as I read this truly inspirational book.

The phrase ‘life-changing’ is probably one of the most over-used phrases in the English language, right? It seems that everything from automobiles, books and movies to cleaning products are ‘life-changing’. The term has become a cliché.
‘Sometimes He Whispers – Sometimes He Roars’ is as far away from a cliché as the east is from the west. This is an incredible, amazing, and, yes… life-changing book! From the opening pages, Marilynn gets right to it. In the introduction, she gives us, in a nutshell, six steps she followed to develop a deeper, more effective prayer life –
1. Be Alert 2. Be Specific 3. Pray With Authority 4. Agree With Others In Prayer 5. Arm Yourself With Spiritual Strength 6. Answer God’s Call
These steps are described in greater detail in the six parts of her book and the chapters within - a journey in itself, for me. Marilyn developed them during her ten year journey following the event that changed America, and the world, forever – September 11, 2001. This book will change your life, forever.

Not counting the Bible, ‘Sometimes He Whispers – Sometimes He Roars’ is without a doubt the most inspiring book I have ever read. Heart-warming and poignant, Marilynn takes the reader on a journey of discovery as she relates her and her family’s life in a post-9/11 world and what prayer has brought to her life and the lives of others… how she was called to pray for the world and what prayer can bring to the world.
What is ‘prayer’? Merriam-Webster states that prayer is a noun, meaning –
“... a formula or sequence of words used in or appointed for praying …” “... the act or practice of praying to God or an object of worship…” “... a devout petition to God or an object of worship…” “…supplication, thanksgiving, adoration, or confession…”
Technically, those ‘definitions’ are correct, but… you know what? And… it took me a long time to figure this out; this is what prayer is –
“… a spiritual communion with God.”
So, what… you mean, like a conversation with God? Yes, exactly!
Conversation... from the Latin conversari, meaning "to live with, keep company with".
So then...when we pray, we are keeping company with God. How cool is that? Wow… that just gave me a little shiver!
In ‘Sometimes He Whispers – Sometimes He Roars’, Marilynn Chadwick helps us prepare for the most important conversations we will ever have, beginning with the first step – ‘be alert’. Sounds simple enough…

Does anyone remember that old Neil Diamond song, popularized by The Monkees, - ‘I’m A Believer’? There is a line from the song that, for a time, pretty much summed up my feelings about prayer…
“…seems the more I gave… the less I got…”
Seems a bit ungrateful, doesn’t it? After all, God answers all of our prayers, doesn’t he? It may not be the answer we [thought we] were looking for, and it may not come as quickly as we would like, but… He does answer.
The question then begs… are we listening?
Just as it takes more than perfect eyesight to ‘see clearly’, it takes more than perfectly functioning ears to ‘hear’ His voice. It takes an open heart… it takes faith.
We renew our mind… and our faith… by staying in the Word; reading… believing… having faith… in His word. One of the little ‘challenges’ (that’s probably not really the right word) Marilynn offers up is the ’21 days of John’. .
Marilynn reminds us of His promise and shares with the reader ‘tools’ she has developed that will… to borrow a phrase… ‘take your prayer life to new levels’; levels unimagined before. Tools with which, we will “learn to hear the voice of God.”
The best way to hear the voice of God, and… no, it’s not rocket science… but sometimes we need a reminder, is to read His words. Marilynn offers the reader an incredibly effective tool - the 21 Day Experiment… “… a way to discover how God’s word can add power to your prayers – and your life.” With that as its stated purpose, there is only one Book in the entire Bible that is a perfect ‘fit’… the Book of John, with exactly 21 chapters. Read a chapter a day… bring His words into your heart and into your mind… see what a difference it makes. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Thank you, Marilynn, for this amazing tool.
“Yeah, okay… but, there is just so much to pray for…” you say? “Where do I start?” Another confession… I have said the same thing… more times than I want to admit. It’s not a perfect world… we’re not a perfect people… it can all be so over-whelming, I know. But, that’s okay because Marilyn is going to give us some tools to take the ‘whelm’ out of prayer.
Do you like lists? You’ll love this one. A simple tool Marilyn talks about is ‘The List’ – a list of daily ‘themes’ to pray over. I love how she assigns a day of the week for each theme –
Mondays: Pray For God To Prohibit Evil Tuesdays: Pray For God’s Provision Wednesdays: Pray For God’s Miracle-Working Power Thursdays: Pray For God’s Problem-Solving Wisdom Fridays: Pray For God’s Presence Saturdays: Pray For God’s Purpose Sundays: Praise God For His Goodness
Marilynn shows how this will help bring structure and specificity to our prayers. And, when we couple this tool with the next one…
Another wonderful tool… especially to those of us who love lists… is the Chubby Book. In Chapter Four, Marilynn introduces us to ‘The Chubby Book Method’. In previous chapters, she talks about ‘staying alert and ready for prayer throughout the day’… ‘listening and watching’. Marilyn goes on to discuss ‘being specific’… finding ‘watchwords’ in the Bible to help focus our prayers and see the answers. Marilyn brings all these pieces together in what she calls her ‘Chubby Book’. People and places to pray for… specific needs… types of prayer (the ‘theme’ list noted above)… these all go in your Chubby Book.
But, what exactly is the ‘Chubby Book”, Veronica? Is it an electronic device… an app for my iPhone… what?
Just as prayer is most effective when it is simple and specific, so is the Chubby Book. It is a set of 50 ruled 3x5 index cards, spiral bound, which costs about $5 at most grocery, variety, and office supply stores – pretty ‘low tech’, huh? It doesn’t require recharging, you don’t have to pay extra for a ‘maintenance plan’ as a hedge against product durability, and it works as well in bright sunlight as it does in a dimly lit room.
The Chubby Book is a great way to develop a prayer habit, and to make your prayer list portable… you can take it with you anywhere (almost… you will want to avoid wet environments with it).
Marilynn also talks about PODs (prayers on demand) and prayer partners – adding power and authority in your prayers. Remember Matthew 18:19-20? “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” – NASB.
More than just a collection of ‘prayer tools’ and a ‘guide’ on how to use them, ‘Sometimes He Whispers… Sometimes He Roars’ is an inspiring, heartwarming and moving chronicle of what prayer has done for and in Marilynn and her family’s life and those she has prayed for.
More than just a book, this is an incredible resource that I will turn to again and again. I believe this is an important book for anyone, no matter how strong your prayer life is now… or, how strong your faith is now.
Marilynn… thank you for the amazing gift you have ‘given’ me. I am already seeing changes in my prayer life as I gain new insights in the power and promise of prayer.
I would leave you, gentle reader, with one final thought…
Strength in faith strengthens your prayer… strength in prayer strengthens your faith.

Enjoyable, good teaching on prayer. The book is built for a Bible Study and has leader's notes in the back. I think that it would be a good study and possibly one that I would lead in the future. In reading the book I felt it was a bit dated, not in the subject matter - can prayer be dated? but in her examples. Her prayer life (and why the book was written) came because of 9/11. When the book was written 2012, I am sure that it was not as dated as it feels now. I imagine that if she wrote this today there would be mention, like I said that is where her prayer life started or took off, but maybe not throughout the book. I am going to keep this book as I think that it is worth reading again. Now I just need to put in practice what she is teaching.
The strategies for prayer are extremely helpful for a list maker like myself. Her testimonies, her ideas, and her heart are all to be deeply gleaned from. The writing however- is difficult. A better editor would have done wonders. Having said that- it is worth your while to hammer through- it will revolutionize your prayer life.
Sometime He Whispers, Sometimes He Roars: Learning to hear the voice of God by Marilynn Chadwick Howard Books – Jan 3, 2012 Facebook: Yes http://marilynnchadwick.com/ Source: Libby Reed from Howard Books, for review From Amazon: Become the Answer to SOMEONE ELSE’S PRAYER. Whether you’re new to the journey of prayer or have been praying for years, this book will take your prayer life to levels you’ve never imagined. And if you feel a little unsure about how to begin, veteran prayer warrior Marilynn Chadwick will guide you each step of the way. As Marilynn shares the amazing stories of what prayer has done in her life—and the lives of others—you’ll begin to get a vision for what your prayers can become. Honestly, prayer is not one of my strong suits. Sometimes I will read books on it, on ways to integrate prayer into your life or on the power of prayer. I may even try it, but nothing really lasts. But this book was different. The methods Chadwick talks about require discipline, but they’re also quick. Once you get in the habit of doing it, prayer becomes second nature and you really are able to “pray without ceasing”. She has broken prayer down into realistically doable parts, and has spread its wings so that prayer touches global concerns as well as local ones. And honestly, what can be better than that? From experience I can say that some books on prayer can be long and tedious. Sometime He whispers, Sometimes He Roars was fresh, relevant and inspiring. It was also an enjoyable read, a nice glimpse into someone else’s prayer journey. This copy was given to me by Howard Books, free, in exchange for my honest review. Always Shine, Starr K
I grew up going to Forest Hill Church in Charlotte, so when my mother told me about Marilynn Chadwick's first book on prayer, I had to read it. I have read several books about prayer before, and most of them were very philosophical and beautiful, but I had little to take away from them to my daily prayer life. Marilynn, however, is a woman after my own heart. Like me, she is a very visual learner who gets a lot out of writing and taking notes, and so this was an inspirational AND practical guide to prayer, which has made immediate impact in my daily walk with Jesus. I love her idea to have 'prayer triggers' for family and loved ones (now, every time I see a Carolina Tarheels cap or t-shirt, I pray for my brother, for example), and I have loved her three week challenge to read a chapter a day of the Gospel of John. Her whole experience in transforming her prayer life is based on Peter's words to be 'alert and self-controlled', and also Paul's exhortation to 'be watchful'. As I've meditated on those words, I truly have been amazed in a few short weeks to see how God really does answer specific prayer, and how He leads you to pray for others in order that YOU will see His glory! Highly recommend.
Sometimes He Whispers, Sometimes He Roar: Learning toHear the Voice of God, by Marilynn Chadwick, Howard Books, 2012, ISBN-13: 978-1451657364, $14.99
Marilynn Chadwick, in the “life and death” moments after 9/11, “when passenger planes became bombs in the hands of terrorists,” partnered with God in a remarkable new prayer journey. Sometimes He Whispers, Sometimes He Roars is the story of what she learned and how that equipped her to “become the answer to some else’s prayer.”
Divided into six sections, the book’s simple, practical format is easy-to-follow, easy-to-understand and implement. The encouraging narratives of answered prayer within Marilynn’s own family and those God added to her prayer list, fueled Marilynn’s faith in God as she saw her prayers answered. Hebrews 11:6 talks about the importance of belief where it says, “We must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”
Still, what makes Marilynn’s inspirational guide stand out from other books on prayer? Full Review: http://tinyurl.com/7ef9nd3
In SOMETIMES HE WHISPERS SOMETIMES HE ROARS, Marilynn Chadwick shares in such a practical and authenic manner about a subject (prayer) that can seem both daunting and forced at times. She invites her readers to trek along with her through some ten years of everyday life, sometimes ordinary days and events - and others that potentially change everything. I love how she shares the discoveries she unearths in Scripture and then finds a simple, doable application (i.e., the "chubby book", POD's, 21-Day Experiment). They are literally life-changing. This is one of those "keeper" books for me - not a one-time read!
This was a great book. It would make a great group study. I think it will definitely help me further develop my prayer life and individual bible study.
