Melissa Stark will take on just about any job as long as the price is right. But this particular job she would gladly take on for free because Captain Zachary Knight has been a thorn in her side ever since she stole his starship ten years ago.
Back then he was a genuine hero and poster boy for the army's hybrid breeding program. Now things have changed. Zach has been accused of a massacre on the planet of Talmare and is being shipped home to stand trial. But certain influential people want to make sure Zach never reaches Earth and Mel and her crew on The Revenge have been hired to intercept him and return him to Talmare.
It should have been easy money. The problem is, Zach is impossible to resist and once Mel gets her hands on him she doesn't want to let him go. Now those same people are also after Mel.
Growing up in the cold, wet, north of England, Nina Croft spent a lot of time dreaming of faraway sunnier places and ponies. When she discovered both, along with a whole load of other things, could be found between the covers of a book, her life changed forever.
Later, she headed south, picked up the perfect husband along the way, and together they volunteered to work in Africa. There they discovered a love of exotic places and a dislike of 9-5 work. Afterward they spent a number of years travelling (whenever possible) intermingled with working (whenever necessary.) Eventually they stumbled upon a remote area in the mountains of southern Spain and the small almond farm they now call home.
Nina spends her days reading, writing and riding her mare, Gencianna, under the blue Spanish skies—sunshine and ponies. She reckons this is proof that dreams really can come true if you want them enough.
Nina's writing mixes romance with elements of the paranormal and science fiction If you'd like to find out about new releases then sign up for my Newsletter at: https://app.mailerlite.com/webforms/l...
This story had the potential to be great, but it fell into some of the classic traps. There were some colloquialisms that were from today, not the future. The sexual tension was not over played, but Kindle says that the first serious sex was a 70% through, which is too long for me. One specific annoyance was the repeated mention of Tiger's prodigious proportions, yet the heroine takes it all in one stroke, despite being abstinent for 10 years. The futuristic world was fine, with enough detail to understand the various motivations, which was sufficient for a shorter book. I'm curious about the characters, so I may read #2, in hopes that it will be better.
I won this book to review from ARC from librarything. I thought this was a super sweet story and would have loved to have more of it. The story begins with the herione encountering the hero as she and a group of women make a hasty escape from a possible horrible future. The women will stop at nothing for a better life. Melissa Stark becomes the leader of the gang of distinct different identities of women that spend their time in a stolen starship pirating from others. The cast of women are hilarious and add quite a bit of humor to the story. Captain Zachary Knight is the man she stole the starship from and he has been after her ever since. The story picks up ten years later after their first encounter with a fast packed action. The quick paced action and dialogue of the story hooked me in from the beginning. The characters have spark, heat, energy, and passion. There is plenty of evilness that Melissa and Zackary fight against throughout the story. Zackary is a strong alpha male that has quite a few lessons on what it means to mess with a strong kick ass herione. I definitely recommend this book to those of you who like action, romance, spunk, suspense and malicious villains.
"Tiger of Talmare" is novella-length futuristic romance with interesting characters that I'd love to read more about. Our eponymous "Tiger" is Zachary, a hybrid human-tiger who's fallen on bad times and is captured by female pirate Melissa, who'd stolen his spacecraft years ago. Poor Zach can't catch a break. Melissa pretends to be a bad-ass pirate of an all-female crew, but really, she's got a soft spot for the supposed criminal.
As Zach charms his way into the crew's good graces, the storyline progresses smoothly - an evil man plots to takeover the federation by destroying/controlling interstellar travel. Parallels to Frank Herbert's Dune series immediately came to mind, as here also interstellar travel is controlled by telepaths who guide the spacelines. Very neat.
I enjoyed this book a lot and look forward to more by the author.
3.5* I was pleasantly surprised. Melissa was bound to a death sentence working the mines after she killed someone. The ship she was on crashes and she, with 2 other women- Leila and Darla, steal another ship. That ship happened to be (Captain) Zachary Knight's ship. Zach happens to be a human-tiger hybrid.
Fast forward 10 years and Zach's wanted to for murder and Mel's team is hired to kidnap him and bring him to someone else. I liked the interactions between Mel, Darla, and Leila. While I learned Mel and Leila's stories, I wanted a bit more. I was pleasantly surprised at what Mel was. Darla I know nothing about (except she is the only human on The Revenge). Everything was wrapped up nicely, I just would have liked a little more. There were a few things left hanging/unexplained, I think this might have been the start of a series that didn't happen.
You guys know I'm a mood reader, right? As in, I choose my books based on the mood I'm in. Well, I was in the mood for some sexy, naughty sci-fi so I picked up this book. To be honest, I could have gone with more sex, but I was still pleased with the book overall. A lot of that had to do with Zach and his idiotic plan to seduce his way out of his problems. Well, that and when he got caught with his hands down his pants. I find that sort of stuff funny.
Spaceships, genetically engineered beings, telepaths, and a bad guy who's pretty bad all add up to fun in my book!
Zach loses his ship to a female pirate Captain. He spends the next ten years dogging Captain Mel and her crew of female misfits trying without success to get his ship back.
Then by some perfect twist of fate he finds himself coming out of cryosleep on board the very ship that was stolen from him with the wicked pirate female intent on turning him over to some baddies for ransom money.
What ensues is humorous exchanges between the enamored Zach and Captain Mel with regular backup from the female sidekick crew.
Will Mel turn the "Tiger of Talmare" over for the ransom or will she give in to his charms?
This book started out way slow to the point where I took about 3 weeks to get back to it. Then about halfway through I finally started liking it.
Mel stole Zach's ship and 10 years later as a pirate she steals his cryo-encased body to be disposed of. The cryotube breaks and it's either thaw him out or let him die. Since it's deliver him alive she lets him live and she finds out she's attracted to him. After the initial flirting/double entendre conversation, I started liking the way they interacted. This ended up being a good book.
I have to say that my actual rating was 3.5 but unfortunately I can't put that on here and didn't think it deserved 4 stars. Overall it was a good story but it felt like something I had read before. Not that I had, mind you, but there wasn't anything surprising about what was happening or how things would come to a close. It was just missing... something. I don't know. Anyways, not a bad read during your spare time. Happy reading.
This was an ok read. I liked the premise. I really liked the female characters. It was short, I felt like there was a lot left out ... there could have been more details. I was not a fan of the dialogue at all ... and there's a lot of it. It is a nice idea for a sci-fi romance though.
Melissa Stark and a couple other women who were heading for certain death in a mining prison manage to steal the ship of one Captain Zachary Knight. They renamed it The Revenge. For ten years they have pirated and dealt with various jobs for a price. When an intercept and return of one Zachary Knight, former poster boy now accused of a massacre, back to the planet Talmare, seems to simple and it goes haywire. Thus begins the story of Mel and her fight to ignore the sexy and perhaps innocent man.
Tiger of Talmare is an amusing read. The crew members are at times a hoot, they are the originals (Leila and Darla) who captured the ship and a few that were rescued from various programs/prisons. The romance between Mel and Zach is really a good one that does not go as planned. He thinks to seduce his way into her good graces and she is somewhat immune to his actions. Not completely but that's part of the fun of this book, but it does have her wondering why she didn't shoot him instead of stunning him ten years ago.
He is at heart, a hero, who, of course is innocent of the charges. Mel is a strong woman who though has a past and is a pirate by choice, she is one of the good guys. There really is a lot of funny moments, dialogue that makes you think (and sometimes wonder how this crew manages to get anything done). I cannot wait to get my hands on more of this world.
I was sent a copy of this book by the author in exchange for a review. I love Nina Croft as an author. Her books are entertaining with mesmerizing characters. In this case we have pirate Mel Stark and her all female crew who have stolen a spacecraft from Captain Zachary Knight. Ten years later she has kidnapped Zac who is imprisoned in a cryochamber which is then damaged. Mel is faced with a choice - wake him up or let him die. She choses to wake him up. The bantering humor between these two all the way through makes for some hilarious reading and it was great to see the relationship blossom. Finding out the back stories of the three main female characters was a good touch and makes the story more interesting because we now know what their agendas are as well. I especially loved the bracelets Mel uses on Zac and giggled when he used them on her towards the end of the book. I'm now salivating while I wait for more books from this very talented author.
i loved this story but it's sure for mature audience. Now it may be a little too short for my tastes as there was still a lot that could have been more developped but as a novella it's quite promising and i hope we will get more
As we learn more about Mel , we understand her better and she can grew on you. Some other characters are interesting but we don't see them too much (i would have loved to see more of the plant hybrid girls) .Mel is independant and strong minded for sure
Zach is a hero deep down, he wants to protect and he does have a macho side but he is determined and ready to do what is right.
There is a lot of action and lot of steamy scene ( thus the mature audience) as well as some interesting topics just breached but giving a deepening side in the story.
so good scfi story but that could have been excellent
I liked this book a lot. It took me awhile to get into it since it sort of just drops you into a situation and you have no connections to the characters. A space ship carrying woman to a mining planet crashes. Three women bound together from past horrors escape and steal a ship from an unsuspecting rescuer(?). Flash forward ten years and the women are still together, along with others they have rescued over the years. The original captain of their ship has tried to catch them for years with no success. Now they have caught him. He is wanted for murdering numerous people on the planet of Talmare. But when the capture goes wrong and Mel must decide whether to take the man dead or alive, she chooses alive and changes everything.
Can't wait to see what happens in the next book in the series. I was given a copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.
Mel & her all female crew are on a much needed paid job to deliver a Cryo body. Unfortunately it thaws & reveals Zachary whose ship they stole 10 years before. The interaction between Mel & Zachary is brilliant but add to that Leila with her wish to kill all men together with an ability to mind read & you have a good mix for trouble. I enjoyed the storyline & hope that there will be a chance to read about what all these great characters do next
This was a fun short story, action packed from start to finish and a great first book to the series!! Mel and Zach's characters are great - lots of smart-mouth dialogue. Mel's crew on the space ship are awesome - all women - their characters very well done - info on all of them and you can see the next story coming!!! I hope this is a series!!!
What a great SFR short story! The banter between Mel and Zach is a hoot, Leila is an absolute psycho and fantastic for it, and the rest of the crew is just awesome-sauce. I’d love to read more of their adventures.
4.5 stars. A fast paced sci-fi romance novella with a tiger hybrid and a cloned female space pirate - not to mention a quirky crew who run the falling-apart spaceship. Entertaining and hot :)
Since this was one of the freebies at Kindle, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. So I was pleased that I found this to be quite a quick enjoyable read. The author packed quite a good story in a small package. Mel – short for Melissa, in escaping a brothel where she had been forced to live for many years, stole her spacecraft, the Revenge ten years earlier from Zach Knight, the product of a breeding program, making him mostly human with a little bit of tiger thrown in.
Mel and her all female crew have become space pirates doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Their current job is to deliver Zach, who has been accused of killing an entire settlement to a political type. Things start to go wrong when the cryo-tube he has been enclosed in is damaged and they are forced to revive him for delivery.
But Zach is a charmer and soon charms most of Mel’s crew and is well on his way to charming her too, making it difficult for Mel to deliver Zach to his almost certain death.
Ms. Croft manages to infuse quite a bit of personality into both Zach and Mel in this novella and I found both characters delightful. Zach is good and sexy and I like that he doesn’t hold a lot of resentment towards Mel for stealing his ship all those years earlier. Mel is tough on the outside, but a softy on the inside and although she really does need the reward offered for Zach, she does what is right.
I’m hoping there are stories in store for some of the other members of Mel’s crew as I will be sure to read them.
This book costs nothing at Amazon so I say go for it! I’ve already been checking out some of Nina Croft’s other books as I was quite impressed with this one. I love when I pay nothing for a book I enjoyed and could read in just one day.
Nina Croft has completely changed my view of Space Operas. Tiger of Talmare is loaded with action, snark, heat, and a budding relationship that was destined in my opinion. The characters completely enraptured me. Mel, our rough and tumble heroine who has put up with more crap than anybody should ever have to, is a survivor who has managed to maintain her compassion to those she cares about. I like that about her. She's hard with a heart.
Zach, our sexy tiger hybrid, is so deliciously sweet. He's one of those men that sits on the fence of his alpha/beta personality--something I think most men do. I found him completely yummy and so totally right for a girl like Mel.
The dialogue drives the story in this book, making a super quick read with a full and complete story. Now, if Croft will give us an amazing story for the little death stalker in the book, I'll be a fan for life. Wanna know what that means? Buy the book! You won't regret it. I'm totally recommending all Nina Croft Space Operas from now on. Loved this read.
This was a fun, steamy little read and I almost gave it 4 stars. I really did enjoy it. It's well written, had a number of laugh out loud moments, and a couple yummy scenes. But then I started thinking about everything it didn't have. At 109 pages it is admittedly a novella, not a novel. But it should still have a whole story, shouldn't it? This feels like someone took a larger space opera - about a honourable captain who encounters a nefarious plan to take over the galaxy involving telepathic freighter pilots (very reminiscent of Herbert's Spice Guild I thought), is rescued from his fate (sort of) by a notorious female pirate, saves the cosmos, clears his name, and falls in love - and then simply snipped out the romance bits for presentation here. 10 years pass between chapter one and two, then the rest of the book passes in less than a week. The fact that Zach is a tiger hybrid is irrelevant and only address ascetically. We never really know why or how he fell from grace. We're just told that he did. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trashing the book. I enjoyed the two hours it took me to read. I just would have really liked the rest of it too.
Tiger of Talmare (Frontiers of Love, #1) by Nina Croft A Sci-fi Paranormal Adventure Romance. I Loved it. Well written and flows smoothly. Very funny, sexy, adventurous. Plenty of suspense and action that keep you invested in the story. Both Tiger (Captain Zachary Knight) and Melissa Stark are great characters and VERY interesting. Nina Croft doesn't leave it at that though! She makes all her characters interesting and brings them into play, which adds depth and layers to the story. A stand alone with an HEA. I will be adding this series to my 'Want to Read' shelves!
Okay, perhaps I'm overly sensitive but this should've been novel-sized instead of a novella. Maybe then I would've enjoyed this more because 1) the insta-love I couldn't accept especially since 2) the female protagonist had in the past been raped on a daily basis for over a year, ten years before she tangos with the man, the first she'd come close to since then, she would fall for. Although it was approached in a considerate way I was still uncomfortable and not quite believing she would so easily trust any man after her experience chained to a bed in a brothel despite being drugged most of the time.
A group of men-hating women, led by Melissa Stark, take over a ship owned by Captain Zachary Knight.
Ten years later, during which time the ladies have become pirates, are to deliver a “package” to Sanderson. The package is Zach, and Sanderson wants him because he wants to eliminate him for what he knows about Sanderson trying to rule.
The ladies start to believe Zach and his story about how he is innocent and has been framed. But how do you deliver Zach and collect the much needed money and still try to keep him alive and set him free, as well as keep themselves alive.
Quick read that keeps you going. Easy to follow. Interesting cast of characters.
Fun, sexy, sassy, science fiction, paranormal, mystery, romance. It all adds up to Nina Croft's terrific new book 'Tiger of Talmare'. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading, but I was sucked right into the story from the beginning. The dialog was great and, at times, I laughed out loud. The love scenes weren't overdone, and no one changed character and got all sappy. The women are feisty and smart, and Zach is yummy and funny. What more could anyone want? Well, maybe another story from Nina Croft :)
Look at that, a sci-fi romance without annoying asshole macho guys! It was extremely gratifying to see the heroine stick up for herself throughout the entire book and not give in like a simpering wet rag within two pages. Also, the hero had a healthy dose of not taking himself too seriously, which is the main problem with romance guys. I could only give it three stars due to shortness and the general silliness of the story. I mean, they knew reach other for maybe a full week by the end of the story? I don't think I will read it again, but I definitely enjoyed it!
I've been a fan of scifi space operas since I was a teenager and read Heinlein's Podkayne of Mars. In Tiger of Talmare, the heroine charts her own destiny, unlike poor Poddy. I enjoyed the role reversal of a kickass female pirate with an all-female crew. As with other reviewers, I read this novella in one sitting, LOLing at times too. It was a fun, enjoyable read, with characters that one wanted to succeed. I would definitely read more by Nina Croft.
My only problem with this story, it was too short. Anyone who is a fan of Joss Whedon will love this book. And if you're not then you are missing one hell of an adventure story. Excellent story and great characters made for a super book. I can't wait to read more by this author. Great job and an excellent way to spend an afternoon on the sun.
