I've been saving this novella for Christmas reading. It's a cute and sentimental entry in Estep's Section 47 series. Charlotte and Desmond crash an exclusive Christmas party held in a German castle as part of their pursuit of the deadly Henrika Hyde. It seems that they have been anticipated and their operation quickly goes sideways. Now they will find out if Gabriel Chase, a deadly ex-cleaner, is for them or against them.

I'm assuming that the mysterious female caller at the novella's end indicates that there will be future Section 47 adventures to come. I look forward to seeing what Charlotte and Desmond do next.

Goodbye 2022!
Mein letztes Buch für dieses Jahr. Dass ich irgendwas in Englisch lese, heißt schon was, normalerweise bin ich dafür zu faul. Aber ich mag die Reihe sehr und konnte einfach nicht auf die Übersetzung warten. Jennifer Esteps Schreibstil ist "easy going", dementsprechend leicht hat sich die Geschichte lesen lassen.
Ein sehr cooles "Christmas Special" und sympathischerweise ist der Handlungsort ein Schloss in Deutschland, was sehr viel Spaß gemacht hat. Ich hoffe da kommt noch sehr viel mehr!

Unterhaltsames Weihnachts-Spionage-Abenteuer

Die Jagd nach Henrika Hyde führt die beiden Spione Charlotte und Desmond auf eine glamouröse Weihnachtsfeier, denn das dort ausgestellte Schmuckstück ist ganz nach dem Geschmack der Schurkin und das sollte sie hoffentlich auch auf die Feier locken – und sonst können sie zumindest Informationen sammeln. Aber dann stellt sich heraus, dass sie nicht die einzigen sind, die einen gefährlichen Plan verfolgen.

Mit Nussknackern und Burg Tannenbaum als Schauplatz hat die Geschichte schon eine schöne weihnachtliche Kulisse, aber der Undercovereinsatz unserer beiden Protagonisten steht schon im Mittelpunkt. Trotz der wenigen Seiten gibt es jede Menge Action, Beziehungen zwischen Charakteren werden vertieft und ihre magischen Fähigkeiten kommen auch zum Einsatz. Ich fand aber auch, dass das Buch gern länger sein könnte und mehr in die Tiefe hätte gehen können – das Potenzial ist auf jeden Fall da. Etwas schade fand ich auch, dass besonders am Anfang noch so viel erklärt wurde, so bin ich zwar gut wieder in die Geschichte gekommen, aber es hat sich dadurch auch ein wenig in die Länge gezogen.

Ich hoffe, dass noch weitere Bücher in der Reihe erscheinen werden, da auch dieses unterhaltsame Weihnachts-Spionage-Abenteuer wieder ein offenes Ende hat und mehrere Handlungsstränge offen bleiben.

What a fun and quick read! This is book 2 in the Section 47 series and although I hadn’t read book 1, I was able to jump right in. Enough information from the previous installment was given when necessary. I found the paranormal elements to be highly intriguing, especially how they were woven into this spy-type setting. I loved the descriptive writing style and thought that the characters were well developed and interesting. This book is fast paced and full of action! If you are looking for an exciting, action packed story with Christmas vibes this would be the perfect one to pick up.

This was pretty short, and kind of a side quest - there wasn't movement on the overall plot (Henrika and the Syndicate) nor progress on uncovering more moles.

Still, it was fun, and I enjoyed watching Charlotte and Desmond work together now they are past the awkward stage.

Fun sequel that is as entertaining as the first book in this series

I included a lot of information about the paranormal world-building and the backstory of the continuing FMC and MMC, Charlotte and Desmond, in my review of the first book in this series, Sense of Danger (SOD), so I am not repeating that information here. The two books in this series are definitely best read in order. This book does not stand alone.

This story begins two weeks after the end of SOD. The newly minted lovers, Charlotte and Desmond, have been formally assigned by their Section 47 superior as partners on a new case, which is actually an extension of the case detailed in SOD. They are in Germany, at a ritzy, Christmas-themed fundraiser at a castle. They are hoping to capture or kill an evil villain who previously got away from them.

This novella is just as much fun as SOD, with lots of sexual chemistry between Charlotte and Desmond and tons of action-adventure scenes. It is very clear that this could be an ongoing series with Desmond and Charlotte, in each book, solving a different case. I would certainly be interested in continuing to read any books that JE chooses to write about these very sympathetic MCs.

I obtained a copy of the audiobook version of this novel on sale for $4.99 from Audible. It is not available in either ebook or audio format through Hoopla. It is not available through KU.

The audiobook has a male and a female narrator, the same ones who narrated SOD. They both do a good job.

I like this series quite a bit and hope it will continue, especially to get to know more about the enigmatic Gabriel and the voice on the phone that is so 80s TV show-like.

It's Christmas time, but it isn't ever easy when one is a spy for Section 47. Who knows better than Charlotte Locke and Desmond Percy?

"Hanging out" as part of the waitstaff, Charlotte finds herself trying to get information about her arch-nemesis, while Desmond is a guest of the party where a huge ruby, the Nutcracker Ruby, is on display. Wherever they are, trouble is bound to come, and it does in this holiday-themed story.

Humor, sound effects, and people getting beaten up all are part of the festivities. While this can be read as a stand-alone, it's helpful to have read the preceding book.

And there's a page that I can even color! Unintentional or not, that just adds to the fun of the book!

I love this series and am hoping the author is planning to continue with it.

Spies and magic - right up my alley, what's not to like?!

The characters in this are great. Strong female characters, even the bad ones, is always a feature that makes me happy, and this book has them. Especially Charlotte as one of our main characters is just so likable and relatable she is just a delight.

I also love the sense of humour the story and the characters have woven throughout the entire book. Who says that you can't maintain your sense of humour despite being surrounded by murder and mayhem? Obviously not this author because there is humour throughout and I love that.

This is a shorter story than a full novel, but I really enjoyed it. As I say, I have my fingers crossed there are more books planned and that this series is going to continue because I am really enjoying it.

Lange ist es her, dass ich den ersten Teil dieser Serie gelesen habe und daher hat es anfangs ein bisschen gedauert, bis ich richtig hineingefunden habe. Aber trotzdem fand ich es wieder echt spannend und kann es nach diesen Andeutungen nun kaum abwarten, hoffentlich, Band 3 zu lesen. War eine süße, etwas weihnachtliche, Kurzgeschichte.

Dass Jennifer Estep grandiose, spannende Geschichten erzählen kann, hat sie schon in ihren Fantasy-Reihen wie der Mythos-Academy-Reihe oder der Splitterkronen-Reihe gezeigt. Ihre neuste Spionage-Thriller Reihe mit Science-Fiction, Fantasy und romantischen Elementen über Charlotte und Desmond, die letztes Jahr mit "Sense of Danger" gestartet ist, hat mir ebenfalls gut gefallen. Nun geht es mit dem Weihnachtsspecial "Sense of Winter" charmant, mitreißend und originell in eine zweite Runde!

Das Cover ist zwar im typischen, unspektakulären Jugendbuch-Fantasy-Stil gehalten, dafür aber raffiniert gemacht und gefällt mir gut. Zusehen ist die Silhouette einer Frau mit wehenden Haaren, die im angedeuteten Fokus einer Kamera vor einer unbekannten Bedrohung davonläuft. Umrahmt wird das Motiv von winterlich weißen Wolken und Schneeflocken. Auch innerhalb der Buchdeckel zieht sich das Motiv des Kamera-Fadenkreuzes durch die Gestaltung und schmückt jeden der 16 Kapitelanfänge.

Erster Satz: "Man erkannte Verbrecher immer an ihren Spielzeugen."

"Sense of Winter" setzt zeitlich wenige Monate nach dem Ende von "Sense of Danger" an. Charlotte und Desmond sind nach der geglückten Mission, die verräterische Maulwürfe in der Section 47 enthüllt hat, immer noch auf der Suche nach der Drahtzieherin Henrika Hyde. Ihre neuste Spur führt sie ins verschneite Deutschland, wo ein Weihnachtsball mit gehobenen Gästen stattfinden soll, auf dem es von normalen und paranormalen Spionen nur so wimmelt....

Am Ende von Band 1 war die Geschichte von Charlotte und Desmond eigentlich weitestgehend abgeschlossen, sodass ich auch eigentlich damit gerechnet hätte, dass die Autorin es bei einem Standalone belässt. Die beiden Agenten sind aber ein so charmantes Duo und in der Welt der Section 47 sind noch genügend weitere Fragen offen und ausreichend viele Bösewichte auf freiem Fuß, dass die Autorin noch mehrere Male zu den beiden zurückkehren könnte. Deshalb habe ich mich auch sehr über dieses kurze, aber feine Weihnachtsspecial gefreut. Die wichtigsten Hintergründe zum Setting und den Figuren werden zu Beginn der Geschichte zwar nochmal wiederholt, man wird aber natürlich trotzdem mehr Spaß mit "Sense of Winter" haben, wenn man bereits Band 1 gelesen hat.

Im Mittelpunkt dieser kurzen Geschichte steht wie schon in Band 1 die sogenannte Section 47, eine geheime Spionageorganisation, welche Terroranschläge und Großverbrechen verhindern soll, die durch Menschen mit magischen Kräften verübt werden. Dazu sind neben Analysten, die Hintergrundrecherchen für Einsätze durchführen, Charmeuren, die durch soziale Kontakte im Außeneinsatz Informationen beschaffen vor allem die sogenannten Cleaner berüchtigt und gefährlich, da sie als speziell ausgebildete Auftragskiller, die gefährliche Ziele eliminieren. Was für uns abenteuerlich erscheinen mag, ist für unsere erste Protagonistin Charlotte Alltag. Als Analystin und Tochter eines Cleaners arbeitet sie schon seit Jahren für die Section 47, um magischen Bösewichten auf die Spur zu kommen. Mit ihrer magischen Gabe, Lügen und Gefahren synästhetisch als Farben zu erkennen sowie Desmonds Galvanismus, der ihn Auren sehen und Energie manipulieren lässt, sind die beiden ein unschlagbares Team, zwischen dem es auch konstant prickelt.

Die Autorin stellt hier also ein schlichtes, aber wirkungsvolles Worldbuilding vor, das den Nährboden für eine spannende Handlung bereithält. Hier wird also schon allein durch das sehr dynamische und energiegeladene Setting viel Spannung und Konfliktpotential für die Handlung gewonnen. Und das ist auch gut so, da ihre sonstige Handlung recht geradlinig erzählt wird. Vor allem einige der Wendungen gegen Ende waren für mich leider vorherzusehen. Die fehlende Überraschung machte die Autorin aber mit besonders viel Action im Showdown wieder gut und sorgte so dafür, dass sowohl Fans von Actionromanen, Krimis, Thrillern, Romanzen, Superhelden-Scie-Fie und Fantasygeschichten auf ihre Kosten kommen.

Unterstützt wird dieser Eindruck durch den temporeichen und dynamischen Erzählstil, der die Handlung zu jeder Zeit vorwärtstreibt. Mit spannenden Kämpfen, Intrigen, Geheimnissen, Einsätzen und Wendungen bekommen wir zu jeder Zeit genügend Spannendes präsentiert, dass man darüber wegsehen kann, dass im Grunde viele bekannte Konzepte und Tropes unterschiedlicher Genres verwendet wurden und wir hier nicht viel Neues erfahren. Auch die Weihnachtsatmosphäre trägt dazu bei, dass man geradezu durch die geringe Seitenzahl fliegt. Mit einem Übermaß an süßem Gebäck und Weihnachtsdekoration ist der Schauplatz der Geschichte - Schloss Tannenbaum irgendwo in Bayern - war voller übertriebener Deutschland-Klischees und auch über Jennifer Esteps Hang zu Alliterationen, den sie hier wieder ausgelebt hat (ich sage nur: Erika Eisen, Henrika Hyde etc.) musste ich immer wieder schmunzeln, insgesamt ist "Sense of Winter" aber so nur eine umso charmantere Lektüre für die vorweihnachtliche Zeit!

Eine weitere Stärke neben dem hohen Erzähltempo und der Vielseitigkeit der Handlung sind die beiden sympathischen Figuren, die hier abwechselnd aus der Ich-Perspektive erzählen dürfen. Gerade dadurch, dass die aufgrund ihrer verschiedenen Magien unterschiedliche Einblicke in aktuelle Geschehnisse haben, ist dies eine äußerst interessante Art durch ihr Abenteuer zu führen. Sehr gut gefällt mir auch, dass die Liebesgeschichte dezent im Hintergrund bleibt und die recht gradlinige Handlung um einige unterhaltsamen Querelen ergänzt. Anzumerken ist an dieser Stelle, dass es sich trotz der typischen Jugendbuch-Aufmachung keineswegs um ein typisches Jugendbuch handelt. Nicht nur weil hier viele blutige Kämpfe ausgetragen werden, sondern vor allem weil die Protagonistin mit ihren 35 Jahren außergewöhnlich "alt" ist. Dass war für mich natürlich eine nette Abwechslung, aber dadurch ist Charlotte vielleicht nicht die beste Identifikationsfigur für 14jährige, sondern spricht eher etwas ältere Leser*innen an. Sie ist sehr viel erfahrener, selbstbewusster, reifer und gefestigter als die üblichen Fantasy-Protagonistinnen, was die Story von viel Geschmachte, emotionalen Schwankungen, Peinlichkeiten sowie einer ellenlangen Selbstsuche befreit und mir sehr zugesagt hat. Neben ihr bleibt Desmond zwar eine Winzigkeit blasser, insgesamt konnte ich aber beide ins Herz schließen. Dasselbe lässt sich auf die Nebenfiguren und Antagonisten beziehen, welche aufgrund der dominanten Handlung nur grob angeschnitten werden. Von einer Geschichte dieses Genres habe ich aber auch nichts anderes erwartet.

Nach 206 turbulenten Seiten ist die aktuelle Mission von Charlotte und Desmond auch schon wieder abgeschlossen. Da der Epilog rätselhafte Andeutungen macht und Henrika Hyde immer noch nicht gefasst wurde, bin ich mir sicher, dass es auch noch einen dritten Band geben wird und freue mich schon auf das nächste Abenteuer mit den beiden Agenten!

"Sense of Winter" ist ein sehr kurzer, aber dafür auch temporeicher, mitreißend erzählter und vielseitiger Spionagethriller mit Science-Fiction, Fantasy und romantischen Elementen vor weihnachtlicher Kulisse. Die Wendungen hätten ein wenig überraschender, das Handlungskonstrukt etwas weniger gradlinig und die Nebenfiguren ein wenig lebhafter sein können - alles in allem bin ich aber wieder gut unterhalten worden

To start off, this should be a ".5" installment at best - it is barely a novella. I read this in under thirty minutes, and while I read fast, I've NEVER finished a novel in that amount of time. This book relates to one incident for the pair of lovers that starts and basically ends in the same mansion. While good and up to Jennifer Estep's work, trying to pass this off as an actual book is astoundingly arrogant - $1.99 would almost be too much for the total content in the product. I've bought and read all of Jennifer's books minus the YA series, and now it seems she is successful enough to charge full price for a quarter of a book. Quite disappointing.

On another note, I really do not like books that have first person experiences from different individuals; not only do I lose track of who is doing what at a given time, I feel that it is a cheap way of getting past an effective first person narrative. I notice that since a year of so ago the flood gates have opened on this type of first person POV. I supposed it is what it is.

As far as the story goes, it was up to par for Jennifer Estep, with reasonable action and plotting. And while I realize this is all make believe, three against the greater odds that were there is just a little hard to swallow. Still, the outcome is as expected so all is good with the world. There are even a few pages of gratuitous sex at the end of a fairly short, did I say short, and basically full price charged for a short book, that I suppose was there to add some filler because it certainly comes up short in the sex scene category.

So, I will see what the next book in the series looks like before I shell out any money for it; hopefully Mz. Estep can come up with enough ideas to write a whole book. If not, I guess the days of buying and reading books from this author are over - I feel that with the price to word count on this mini-novella I was taken advantage of and that is not something the author should be rewarded for.

I am being nice and giving this 3 stars, because I like this world and this universe, and I think I'd have enjoyed it more if I wasn't expecting this to be a full book, but this was a huge let-down.
The first 83% just felt like a short story, an interesting interlude but nothing that moved much of the plot forward. The Christmas theme too makes this feel like it should have been a novella instead.
This being released as book 2 and not book 1,5 just didn't work.

I should have read that it was 47,000 word novel that could be read as a standalone and I wouldn't have been so disappointed. But honestly I think calling it book 2, and not 1.5 feels misleading, cause it doesn't really move the main story arc forward in any meaningful way. It is more than half the length of the first book, and because of how little actually happens it feels even shorter than it is.
There is this heist section, which is most of the book, there is a sex scene, and then there is a tiny cliffhanger epilogue from Gabriel's POV.
I was so excited to get more of this story, instead I feel like I got a side quest.

Ich habe mich so auf mehr von Desmond und Charlotte gefreut, denn die beiden gefielen mir schon in "Sense of Danger" super gut. Leider war "Sense of Winter" nun ein wenig kurz im Vergleich zu Band 1, aber das war schon okay. Ich mochte den kleinen Ausflug zurück in die Welt der Section 47 trotzdem sehr gerne.
Das Setting mit einer Weihnachtsfeier in einem Schloss in den Alpen war super schön und es war durchaus spannend, wie Charlotte und Desmond versuchen, ihren Auftrag zu erfüllen, auch wenn eine Menge Ungeahntes passiert und schiefgeht. Aber die beiden schaffen es mit ein wenig Unterstützung, irgendwie trotzdem zurechtzukommen und es war vielleicht auch gerade wegen des etwas geringeren Umfangs ziemlich actionreich.
Mir gefiel die Fortsetzung also sehr gut, ich hoffe, es folgt noch mehr von Desmond und Charlotte.

Plutôt court, 5h au lieu de 9h ou 11h comme on peut en avoir l'habitude avec ce genre de roman.
Une nouvelle plutôt qu'un tome 2. L'histoire reste néanmoins agréable, avec une ambiance festive de Noël - même si j'en viens à croire que l'autrice déteste ce ballet ^^.
Plusieurs choses se mettent en place pour la suite de la série, notamment avec l'épilogue.

Côté narrateurs, ils sont très agréables (le troisième narrateur intervenant pour l'épilogue justement). Je suis toujours un peu surprise par la "voix" de Charlotte lorsqu'elle prend la parole et n'est plus narratrice.

Bref, j'attends la suite pour la découvrir avec plaisir !

I loved the first book in this series, but I think it has been a little too long in between for me to remember the details and we didn't get much of a recap.

I will say even though I was playing catchup I still enjoyed it. I love violence of it all, and this book has that in spades. You can see who is greedy and who isn't and who is on the right side.

I want more of this series!
Also really enjoyed the narrator's they really give these characters life.

While I really love this author, I think this series isn't for me. I was so so on the first book and the same on this one. The party was interesting, the secret work that Charlotte and Desmond did was slightly more interesting, especially at the end when they pretty much blackmailed one person into helping them going forward. Yet I was a bit bored while reading this one and glad to be done with it. If there are more in this series I think I'll skip them.

Perfect for the holidays, SUGAR PLUM SPIES is a cozy read that is best enjoyed with a warm drink and a sweet snack. It sticks close to the action and holiday quips, and is everything I wanted from a Jennifer Estep holiday book.

Though fans of A SENSE OF DANGER will appreciate an addition to that universe, this can just as easily be picked up by new readers. Estep’s content is always easy and enjoyable to read.

The story follows undercover spies Charlotte and Desmond as they track an old enemy, only to be caught in a heist and forced to fight for their lives.

It was fun to see Charlotte and Desmond work on their own to fight the bad guys. They work great together and it made for inventive fight scenes.

Honestly, the book is so short and straightforward that there is little else I can remark on aside from this: It’s fun. Simple, energetic, cheesy fun. Perfection for the holiday season.

Sugar Plum Spies by Jennifer Estep is a 5 out of 5 stars, phenomenal, festive & action-packed urban fantasy romance that is perfect for the holiday season. This is book #2 in the Section 47 series, but it can easily be read as a standalone.
This book puts the realistic in magic realism by utilizing elements of actual science to create the magic system for an excellent believability & then expending it with flair & flourish to achieve extraordinary powers.

The main character, Charlotte Locke, is an analyst at a secret government agency, but she also has a form of magical synesthesia that she uses to uncover lies amidst the spies. Her partner on this mission, & currently in life as well, is Desmond Percy, who is a cleaner for the agency & has magical prowess related to energy & is incredibly powerful. They delight in going undercover for the holidays to a fancy Christmas party in hopes of catching their nemesis that got away in the first book or at the very least information to aid in their endeavors. However, let’s just say their mission does not go as planned for trouble follows, but what appears is the most dazzling of stories.

The author does an absolute incredible job with their atmospheric writing that creates an environment that truly immerses the reader into the holidays as much as drinking hot chocolate & eating gingerbread cookies. Then, the visions of sugar plums dancing begin & the action-filled adventure roller coaster takes off. The chemistry between the main pair is just magnetic, but I loved the fact that there’s mystery, romance, suspense & a bit of extra special abilities all thrown together for such an entertaining Christmas extravaganza.

If you enjoy spies, suspense &/or Santa’s holiday, then I would highly recommend checking out Sugar Plum Spies by Jennifer Estep.

SUGAR PLUM SPIES can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary

SOME BACKGROUND: Paramortals make up approximately one percent of the world’s population, and most have hidden their magic from the ‘mortal’ world. Section 47 is a paramortal spy organization whose mission was to gather intelligence to prevent terrorist attacks but found themselves tracking those who use magic to commit their crimes.


Told from dual first person perspectives (Charlotte and Desmond) follows Section 47 agents Charlotte Locke and Desmond Percy on their latest assignment in Frankfurt Germany. Heiress Elsa Eisen moved her orphaned niece Lina to an historical castle in the wake of her parents’ murder. Hoping to give Lina a magical Christmas, Elsa sponsored a Christmas Eve Nutcracker fund raiser featuring a world famous ballerina and scenes from the play but all does not go according to plan when the reveal of the world-famous and multi-million dollar Nutcracker Ruby brings out an array of paramortal assassins, thieves, and Section 47 Agents. Hoping to learn the location of CEO and founder of Hyde Engineering Henrika Hyde, a chemist who has invented a powerful weapon in her war against the paramortal, Charlotte, Desmond and fellow agent Gabriel Chase finds themselves on the defensive when lives are threatened, and our couple face the prospect of losing one another.

The relationship between Charlotte and Desmond has been building since the first instalment, a relationship that is now passionate and intense. Desmond is desperate to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love, and Charlotte knows that Desmond is the man that calls to his heart. The $ex scenes are seductive.

The secondary and supporting characters included heiress Elsa Eisen and her niece Lina; ballerina Katarina Tanetsa, as well as the return of Section 47 Agent Gabriel Chase. The requisite evil has many faces.

SUGAR PLUM SPIES is a fast paced, action packed, violent story of betrayal and vengeance, power and control, desperation and determination, magic and mystery. The premise is intriguing and exciting; the romance is impassioned; the characters are energetic and dynamic.

Section 47 is a secret organization which police’s the behavior of the para-mortal population. Charlotte Locke(‘Numbers’) is gifted with synesthesia, the ability to see danger and to sort out lies from documents and conversations. She can also brainstorm possible solutions in nearly impossible situations by thinking ‘outside the box.’ Her talents are crucial in her job as a para-mortal analyst for the agency.

Desmond Percy is smart, funny, and loyal to his friends. He is a para-mortal galvanist, a person who can manipulate and pull power from different types of energy and see auras. As a cleaner for Section 47, Desmond is assigned jobs involving para-mortal criminals.

Desmond and Charlotte are working undercover at a High Society Charity Christmas bash. Each guest paid $10,000 for the privilege of eating an assortment of specialty foods, dress up in their fancy wear, mingle with other guests and view the highly valued ‘Nutcracker Ruby,’ an incredibly rare Ruby and Diamond ring worth 30 million dollars. Since the party has sent invitations to everyone at the highest level of Society, Desmond and Charlotte expect their target will attend. Charlotte wants answers and she will do what it takes to get them. Her father’s death., ie murder, is connected.

SUGAR PLUM SPIES is the second book in Ester’s Section 47 Action Adventure Paranormal Fantasy series. I loved the first book and recommend reading it first. The main characters and conflicts build from it. SUGAR PLUM SPIES is a novella and it passed quickly. I purchased & listened to the audiobook which was wonderfully performed by Helen Laser, Lace Dalton, and Nathaniel Black. I have checked and see there is a third book coming soon. I will be snatching it up because the light tone, humor, tongue in cheek delivery make me smile and the fast action keeps me entertained. This was the 4th Christmas book I’ve read this spring and my favorite. :D

Da mir der Vorgänger von "Sense of Winter" recht gut gefiel, freute ich mich über die Fortsetzung. Das Buch hatte ich noch gut als unterhaltsam und spannend in Erinnerung und wollte auf jeden Fall wissen, wie es mit Charlotte und Desmond weitergeht. Zwar war ich ein wenig überrascht, dass es vom Umfang her nur ca. halb so viele Seiten hatte. Aber dann sah ich, dass es als Weihnachtsabenteuer bezeichnet wurde, sodass ich es letztendlich als eine Art Zwischengeschichte betrachtete mit Blick auf eine eventuelle Fortsetzung.

Dementsprechend stieg man gleich in den Spionageauftrag ein. Wer den ersten Band nicht kannte, musste sich jedoch nicht verloren fühlen, denn für alle relevanten Charaktere und Ereignisse gab es zwischendurch immer wieder kurze Zusammenfassungen und Rückblicke. Auf der einen Seite war das ganz gut. Auf der anderen Seite bremste dies jedoch die ohnehin schon kurze Geschichte gelegentlich etwas aus. Für das recht zügige Erzähltempo mochte dies weitgehend gut passen, damit man nicht ganz so durch die Ereignisse raste. Mit der Zeit hätten die Rückblicke aber etwas weniger werden dürfen, damit der Spannungsbogen auch mal etwas dauerhafter erhalten blieb.

Der Schreibstil war gewohnt locker, flüssig zu lesen und recht unterhaltsam. Die Idee zum Plot nicht unbedingt neu, aber auch nicht langweilig. Ich hatte definitiv meinen Spaß beim Lesen, denn Charlotte war wieder gewitzt und schlagfertig. Desmond war wie gewohnt der Profi, nun aber als verliebter Profi unterwegs. Das hatte auch seinen Charme.

Wenn man "Sense of Winter" als weihnachtliche Novelle betrachtet und entsprechend nicht zu viel erwartet, hat man damit sicherlich seinen Spaß. Es ist leichte Kost für zwischendurch mit nicht unbedingt vielen Überraschungen und Wendungen. Mir persönlich hätte eine etwas umfangreichere Geschichte entsprechend des ersten Bandes mehr gefallen. Ganz gerne gelesen habe ich es trotzdem.

Sugar Plum Spies by Jennifer Estep is the 2nd book in her Section 47 series. I am a big fan of Jennifer Estep, having enjoyed all her fantastic series. After reading the first book in this series, I couldn’t wait to read this book. Refresher: Secret 47 is a secret government agency that handles paranormal, terrorists, criminals, and have magical abilities. Their job is to gather information to prevent attacks, casualties, as well as to protect the mortal world; especially against those who create dangerous weapons.

Our main heroes are Charlotte Locke and Desmond Percy; Charlotte is an analyst, with a magic of synesthesia to allow her to uncover lies and track bad guys; Desmond has powerful magical abilities, especially using energy. They are sent as a team to a party at a German Castle, and have Charlotte sneak out later, when Desmond shuts the lights off, for her to find more information on their enemy. What turns out to be a simple assignment, turns into a nightmare, as all hell breaks loose.

From start to finish, there was so much action with either Charlotte or Desmond fighting the enemies. Desmond with help from Gabriel, managed to kill off the mercenaries in the ballroom, but he was worried about Charlotte. She found herself stuck in her plans to find information, and was caught, along with the lady in the house, as terrorist threatened their lives. I really loved Charlotte, especially how she always managed to get out of death-defying situations.

Sugar Plum Spies was a fun, exciting story, that had constant danger and action, with some romance and witty banter. The entire story revolved around one night, and lots of fun. This was another wonderful intriguing urban fantasy that is very well written by Jennifer Estep. I loved both Charlotte and Desmond, and look forward to more on them in future books. I suggest you read Sugar Plum Spies, as I fully enjoyed it.

"Sugar Plum Spies" is the second installment in the Section 47 series. Quite honestly, while this read was good it was not great! I usually enjoy the works of Jennifer Estep so much but this installment felt rush and the series seems to be going nowhere. Additionally, the characters in an Estep read are usually one of the strongest features but these characters are just not memorable so far.

Charlotte is working undercover at the Tannenbaum Castle as part of the serving staff for the upcoming Christmas fundraiser and gala. She is on a mission to discover more about who killed her father. She believes that the hostess may have some information she needs. While working with her partner and recent lover, Desmond Percy they plan to break into the hostess' office. Unfortunately, before they are ready to execute their plan, the featured ballerina from the Nutcracker and her crew hold the guests hostess, steal their jewelry and belongings while taking the hostess hostage in order to steal the Nutcracker Ruby valued at 30 million dollars.

Charlotte is not unaware that this plot very well could be the result on master manipulator and all around bad woman, Henrika Hyde; but she has not spotted her on site. That does not mean she is not a part of this situation. The question is whether or not Charlotte, Desmond and their friend and former Section 47 agent, Gabriel can thwart the efforts of the thiefs before the innocent guests are harmed or killed?

I was not feeling these characters even though the action in the read was a highlight. In all honesty, if the third book does not appeal to me, I am going to bow out of this series even if it is written by Jennifer Estep. Sometimes a series is a hit and sometimes it is a miss. Section 47 is starting to look like a miss for me.
