Author Daniel Hurst is one that I find difficult to judge/rate. While I am entertained by his suspense stories, they always have an unrealistic element that borders on the ridiculous. In his latest, “Her Last Hour”, he takes a woman who is known for her iron-clad (some may call ruthless) negotiations.

The story begins with Katherine, said tough woman, who is looking forward to a relaxing weekend at home. She retrieves a letter from her mailbox which states she only has one hour to live, nothing more. Perplexed, she immediately dismisses it, until she discovers there is a man in her house.

Thus begins Hursts new psychological thriller. We learn, along with Katherine, of all her previous negotiations in which she gave a person one hour to decide. Yes, she’s a tough negotiator, but who would want to kill her? Well, it seems that there is a list.

I listened to the audio, brilliantly narrated by Antonia Beamish. She had the perfect intonation for an indignant woman. This is a relatively short audio, a bit over 6 hours. Every moment is packed with intrigue, some over-the-top and somewhat unbelievable. Yet, you just can’t stop listening!

I was impressed with a clever twist at the end. All in all, a solid thriller if you enjoy those thrillers that require you to suspend disbelief. It will, however, make you second-guess your strategy if you are uncompromising, and self absorbed.

Thank you GR friend Jayne for putting this on my radar!

This book was written very well. Honestly, all of Daniel Hurst’s books are of the same caliber. And his stories are always pretty good, too. I understand the idea of a nerve-racking thriller with tons of twists and turns and all that. However, sometimes that can be overdone, which is how I felt about this particular entry. Katherine, our lead, isn’t the nicest person, and she’s greatly wronged many people in her personal and professional dealings. And something finally catches up to her when a mysterious note is left, claiming that she has an hour left to live. And soon after that, a masked man enters her home and takes her prisoner. She spends a great deal of time trying to reason with and figure out who this stranger works for. And he doesn’t give much information, as she reflects on her brother, the person she bought her resident from, sour business dealings, etc, all of which she manipulated to her advantage and harmed the other parties. So that’s a pretty meaty premise, right? It sure is. And I was hooked, up until we find out who is behind everything, which I believe happened about 2/3 of the way in. After that, the story just kept going unnecessarily, adding many unneeded further layers and intrigue, all of which overshadowed the portion of the story that came before. I didn’t think any of it was done badly, but it wasn’t needed. Sometimes simplicity is better. This would have been a much more enjoyable experience if it stuck to its basic premise, using more time to develop some of Katherine’s issues and background, and didn’t wander off into all sorts of additional directions.

You know if you know me that I love Daniel Hurst’s books, they are always about normal people who have un normal things happen to them that generally set of a chain of events that change their lives, quickly and irreversibly
This book is no different and the author continues his writing style of short snappy chapters with a cliff hanger at the end of each one
This time we meet Katherine who receives a letter through her door saying she has an hour to live….and the countdown begins, it is fast paced and very readable as always although for me, this time, the tale was very tall indeed 😊 nonetheless it was not an option not to see how it ended (even though I wish the neighbours hadn’t been called Fred and Rose) and it ended, as always, wia stigin it’s tail

This latest book by prolific writer Daniel Hurst gave me mixed feelings. On the one hand it was very, very thrilling up to the 40% mark or so. After that, it went a bit off the track.

We meet Kate, home on a Friday night in her new house. She’s worked hard and was able to buy the house for a very large sum. In cash – she’s rich! She moved in recently but is still busy with putting her own stamp on it. But today, she’s planning to have a rest, a quit evening with nothing more on her mind than having dinner and watch television. Until the moment a threatening letter is shoved under her door. What follows is a couple of chapters that would lend themselves perfectly for a television movie. It’s very thrilling and unexpected things are being said and done. Until something even more unexpected happens. And then the rest of the story unfolds, with varying success. I cannot tell too much here to prevent spoilers, but let’s say that its all a bit unbelievable in places. In other places, its suddenly very believable so the story held my interest until the end – that held a surprise, as often in Hursts’ books.

So, I can recommend the book as a fast and often entertaining read.

But. Yes, there are two buts. The first one is that I was growing more and more irritated by the use of italics. After a while, it reads as if there is an unseen narrator that wants to explain things to the reader. Things that do not need any explanation – and so it starts feeling a bit as if the reader wouldn’t understand why something is happening. One of the fun things in reading a thriller is that the reader needs to find out things for themselves, to read between the lines. So, the story could have done with more ‘show’ and less ‘tell’.

The second one is the fact that almost everything in this story is either ‘small’ or ‘little’. Kate starts with wanting to cook ‘a small portion of vegetable risotto’. Why a small portion? Why doesn’t she feast herself on a really nice meal? And although I understand ‘a small hedgehog’ in the garden, and ‘small talk’, I don’t understand ‘a small temptation’, ‘a small crack’, ‘a small tin’. The word ‘small’ is being used more than 20 times.

Even worse is ‘little’. Things that are not small, are little. I counted 76 times the word is being used. Okay, things like ‘a little after four o’clock’ or ‘little boy’ are understandable, but why ‘little relaxation’, ‘little landscaping’, ‘little careful not to slip in my socks’ and so on? It really started to grate on me. I counted 47 synonyms for ‘little’ in a thesaurus. Surely Daniel Hurst could have come up with a synonym for ‘little’ a couple of times?

Why do I mention this? Because I think the book could have been more interesting to read without the ongoing repetition of these words. It distracted me in times from what I was reading. And that’s unfortunate, because there is a good story there.

How many people want Daniel Hurst's newest female protagonist dead in one hour?

Apparently, there is a very, very, very long list!

Yes, there is no shortage of individuals who want this arrogant and self-absorbed woman dead.

This "locked-in" thriller is fast-paced and twisty.

Although the book had eye-rolling moments and an ending that came out of nowhere, I enjoyed the author's "It's always wise to be nice to EVERYONE" messaging.

I listened to the audiobook read by Antonia Beamish, one of my favorite narrators.

Antonia Beamish's narration was outstanding and helped elevate my rating of the book.

quite entertaining but OTT

“Her Last Hour”, by Daniel Hurst

This was very entertaining, hence my ratings.

As the audiobook was immediately available from the library through Libby, I decided to give it a chance.

But, as I can’t just listen, I ended up purchasing the ebook for $1.68 (Canadian), which I read as I listened.

Let me say that the audiobook narrated by Antonia Bemish is excellent and it helped me to enjoy the book a lot more.

But I couldn’t not notice the repeated words.

Just to list a few:

Man = 227 (I understand that this one was hard to avoid)
Door = 210
Look(ing) = 204
Feel(ling) = 122
Balaclava = 90
Little = 78
Eye(s) = 74
Head = 73
Hour = 63
Over = 44
Knife = 27
Small = 25

The book is short (277 pages for the paperback), with too many chapters for its size, so you can hardly expect any depth.

The storyline was interesting, with some good moments, but it’s quite farfetched (or over the top - OTT, as some readers might say).

Anyway, as I said, this was entertaining and I’m looking forward to reading another book by this author.

ebook (Kindle): 234 pages (default), 53 chapters (including epilogue)

audiobook narrated by Antonia Bemish: about 6 hours (normal speed)

This is about a woman who has one hour to live. Her attacker quickly enters her house and puts on the timer. What occurs later is a constant turn of events that make this novel a whirlwind of action. I read it in only a few hours. This author has an easy writing style that makes it quick and fun to read. Recommended!

The "king of domestic suspense," Daniel Hurst, returns following The Holiday Home and The Doctor's Wife with his latest spine-chilling witty psychological thriller—HER LAST HOUR. When a woman's enemies come back to haunt her, giving her one hour to live in this locked-in cat-and-mouse game of TIME.

Time is precious. Time is money.
And Time is the only thing we can't beat.

It is Friday evening, and Katherine, single (almost 39 yrs old) is looking forward to a night in. She emails her brother to let him know she is thinking of him. Of course, he has not replied in a year. She decides on a phone-free evening.

Set in London, she lives in a beautiful two-story modern home designed by German designer Franz. Then his wife became ill, and they sold it and moved back to Germany. She spent over a million pounds on the house, fell in love with it, and has been renovating it.

However, the night in with a relaxing, healthy dinner and a glass of wine was suddenly interrupted when she heard a fluttering of the letterbox behind her.

Katherine: One short sentence is written in black ink across the middle of the page.

It is shocking. It is terrifying. She can scarcely believe what she is reading.

She has one hour to live.

At first, she wonders if this is a joke or does someone want to kill her.
Six words. No context. No explanation.

Who would want her dead? Evidently, she has a long list.

The phone is gone. She put it in the drawer earlier. She runs outside, but her tires are flat on her car.

Someone is in her house. The power has been cut. She is plunged into darkness.

Then he appears. A man holding a knife. Black combat trousers. A black hoody. And a black balaclava to conceal his identity.

The captor reaches into his pocket and pulls out a digital device. They are counting down. It is a timer.

TICK TOCK...

She has 60 minutes to live, which now is at 54 minutes.

Have you ever given someone a time limit and issued an ultimatum—an hour to finish something? BOTH business and personal? You should think twice about doing that again because this list is keeping score and ready for REVENGE!

Who would hire this person to do such a thing?

Is the captor carrying out a job for an employer? Who hated her so much to be willing to pay somebody to kill her?

Even though she is a woman of considerable means and tries to offer him money, that makes him mad, and he knocks off another 5 minutes for the bribe attempt.

Evidently, she has hurt people and is about to find the list of people. They all have to do with Time. She has made enemies. She is told she is evil and being punished.

There is a list from her past, from business dealings to personal ex-boyfriends, her brother, and more.

Will she be able to escape before she is murdered? Will Katherine be able to outsmart them?

When she finally runs and gets away to try the neighbors, she walks in on something bad - another murder? HILARIOUS. Then here he comes again. Then she tries to escape, and someone picks her up but brings her back. What is going on?

Someone winds up dead. More than one person. And what about the room in her house she did not know about?

OMG! HER LAST HOUR is so good! Wickedly witty and clever, you have no clue where the author is taking you, but trust me, enjoy the ride.

HIGHLY ENTERTAINING!

Katherine is tenacious and clever, but you do not see the many TWISTS coming! WOW, that ending with the jaw-dropping twist when the guy's identity in the black balaclava is revealed to readers is PRICELESS. I would love to learn the inspiration behind this book!

Katherine has no clue that the people you may be mean to are right before you, so watch your back.

I loved the front cover, and this was a witty, devilish, quick read I read in one sitting! I saw this one upcoming in his newsletter and could not wait to read.

Daniel always surprises you with his highly creative suspense psychological thrillers, and this one was a DOOZIE! A pleasant surprise, like nothing I have ever read. This book will make you rethink how others perceive you and how you treat people.

If you like clever locked-in cat-and-mouse revenge stories, I highly recommend! Also, look for Daniel's upcoming book, The Bride to Be (Inkubator Books), coming May 7, 2023. How in the world does he write so many books? I think he is superman.

Now THIS was a thriller! Katherine is alone in her new palatial home when a note arrives through the letterbox telling her she has one hour to live. She races upstairs to retrieve her phone from the drawer of her bedside table, but it's not there, which means the person behind the note must already be in the house.

Soon Katherine is in for the fight of her life. Her tormenter sets a timer for one hour, forcing her to watch her time tick away while taunting her over why this is happening. Katherine realizes she has a formidable list of enemies, but what's the reasoning behind one hour?

I was NOT prepared for the wild directions this story took, and I enjoyed every minute. HER LAST HOUR is available now on KU and in paperback.

One woman...many enemies...

How many people want Katherine dead? Apparently, it is fairly extensive list! And not just dead, but within the hour?!

It's a typical Friday evening when Katherine returns home to Kent from her busy job in London and she is looking forward to putting her feet up, opening a bottle of wine and just chilling out for the rest of the weekend. After a shower to freshen up, she types a quick text to her brother but isn't surprised when he fails to respond. But tonight, she is going to have a tech-free stress-free evening. So with that, she switches her phone off and places it in her bedside drawer before heading downstairs.

Walking into her kitchen, she hears the mailbox flap before pondering that it's a bit late for the postman to be delivering, given the hour. But sure enough, there is an envelope just inside her front door where it has fallen. Retrieving it, she opens it and just as quickly drops it again, shocked by it's contents.

"You have one hour left to live."

At first shocked, Katherine regains her composure before dismissing it as some kind of prank. Until the lights go out...and her phone has mysteriously disappeared from her bedside drawer. In her attempt to run for help, she is accosted in the backyard by a man wearing a balaclava as he manhandles her back inside where he ties her to the dining room chair.

Thus begins this adrenaline-fuelled thriller where all of Katherine's foibles and ruthlessness are uncovered as she attempts to find out who is behind this ridiculous countdown of her life. Until she realises the significance of "one hour". It's what she gave others a deadline by which to make their decision.

So who of those she gave that deadline is behind this plot to end her life? And why the theatrics?

I was eager to dive into what is now my 29th Daniel Hurst thriller and while I wasn't disappointed, I felt it lacked something though I'm not sure what. It had the adrenaline, it had the thrill-ride, it had the fast pace and snappy chapters. I think what it didn't have was that killer twist. It had a twist, yes, but I wasn't shocked or thrilled by it either. The biggest reveal came about two thirds into the story and with still so much more left, I think I was expecting something bigger, as Daniel Hurst usually delivers. Don't get me wrong, it's still a thrill-ride and adrenaline-pumped and of course his trademark OTT style, but it was hugely entertaining just the same.

Katherine wasn't the least bit likeable so I guess I found it hard to sympathise with her. She was ruthless but did she deserve to die for it? Someone seemed to think so. I just didn't much care for her really.

There are quite a few more characters in this one than is usual for Hurst but most of those play such a small part I guess it doesn't really matter. The main players here are Katherine and balaclava man.

I do have one final point that doesn't sit right with me. Unlike Australia or the US, in the UK their mail is delivered through a flap in the door (I kind of like that idea as it would save me venturing outside to the mailbox). However, very late on a Friday night an envelope is slipped through her letterbox flap. But her house is fortified like Fort Knox with an electronic gate that requires the mailman or delivery person to press a buzzer, announce their delivery and for Katherine to buzz open the gate. So how very late on a Friday night did she suppose the mailman was delivering her a letter? Why did she even have a letterbox flap when her property was locked up tight? In that case I would think she'd have a mailbox. Unlike most other aspects of his books, Hurst fails to explain this. And I felt it kind of needed explaining because it was the whole basis of the story and the threat she received that she had one hour left to live.

Overall, another entertaining adrenaline-pumped thrill-ride which whiled away the afternoon nicely.

Tormentor, second guess, timer…

Katherine is home alone on a Friday night when a letter drops through her mail slot. “You have one hour to live” is the message she reads. She wonders who left the message and if it’s a REAL threat. The chain of events quickly begin to escalate when a masked man enters her home.

We’ve all heard the numerous quotes about sweet revenge. My revenge begins…

*First time reader of this author.

*Quick, entertaining read - I read it in a few hours! Not a very realistic plot, but that’s ok!

*Fast paced. I loved the short chapters, each with a cliffhanger ending. Surprise ending!

* There is a story behind each person. We’ve all heard about treating others as you would want to be treated. Katherine hasn’t learned this lesson yet!

Super entertaining, fast paced, over-the-top thrills - plus it’s only 6hrs long!

This was a really cool locked room thriller. It was super claustrophobic and I loved “that” twist

I didn’t guess any of the reveals, maybe because by then I realized this was highly unrealistic and anything goes

Still it was fun and as awful as everyone was, I kinda cared about Katherine!

This book is an addictive non-stop roller coaster ride. So much is packed into one story and the twists are so unexpected. I was unable to put the book down as each chapter ends in a cliffhanger and one chapter moved seamlessly into the next. Katherine is a wonderful example of a woman's strength and bravery. She learns that she hasn't always been kind to people and that's something she needs to work on. It's a heart stopping pulse pounding thriller that only Daniel Hurst could create. It was fast paced and really enjoyable. Perhaps Daniel's best yet.

“opening the envelope, i pull out the white piece of paper held inside it and open it up. […] it says i have one hour to live.”

~ ♡ 2.5/5

the ending was lacking, but some of the plot twists were very good in my opinion. i wouldn’t rave about this book but if you want a simple mystery this would work!

i kinda wish the epilogue was less vague and had more details.

You guys! Daniel Hurst 's latest book is a must read!
I loved this storyline! This story was so intense that I was actually scared for the character. The mind games being played with Katherine by her captor really caused her immense fear and the thought that what was happening to her could really happen in real life caused unease in myself. I loved the rollercoaster ride Hurst brings us on, in this book! Make sure to grab a copy!
