An interesting journey
There's a lot of kidnapping in this book. There's enough kidnapping to almost feel like a fetish. Initially I had a lot of mixed feelings because it toes the line of consent. It is worth noting that over the course of the book I can't help but feel strongly that our kidnapping Prince is actually quite loving and decent. There's a lot of culture shock there has to be overcome. You also have to understand that you are signing up for a book that's over 800 pages and has over 200 chapters. It almost feels like three books, maybe four books put together as an omnibus. The pacing almost compliments that idea, but not quite. There's definitely arcs that with a teeny bit of editing you could split the giant book into a trilogy. Considering the content I think the book would have actually benefited from being split up. The main characters start to shift around in the middle and the story seems to lose focus as a full length.
I did not dislike the story, I do think I will read part two after a long break. I am curious where it will end up but I feel exhausted after taking a week to read this. It's got a lot of very heavy topics that are very much a part of the story from beginning to end. It discusses many forms of abuse both mental and physical and these are things that define the two main characters. So much so that as a reader you feel like you can't escape it either.
Trigger warnings: the story does include domestic violence, slavery, miscarriages, questionable consent, illegitimacy... If any of these things upset you you're going to have a very hard time reading the story. These topics don't really go away.
Sorry this review isn't more in detail, I leave reading this book feeling completely exhausted. It was a hard read, not because of its length but because of the heavy topics that are woven too deeply into the characters. I felt like an uphill battle to get to the end only to be put in a spot where it feels like the story is only just beginning. The main character is never seen to get ahead.
