More Tales to Give You Goosebumps is another collection of ten short stories by R.L. Stine. Sadly, though this book was a slight improvement over its predecessor, it was barely one (2.10 stars vs. 2.05 stars). The way I see it, the stories in these books suffer from two fatal flaws:

1. They take something, Goosebumps stories, which are already often wafer-thin, even in a 130-page full Goosebumps book, and condense them ten times more into a story that's only about ten pages long. If one of the full books is a wafer, these stories are translucent and they barely exist.

2. The stories are predictable as hell. I think I predicted how every single story was going to turn out, and was right every time, often to eye-rolling and disappointing effect.

Based on my poor experience with the first two books in this Tales to Give You Goosebumps series of six books, I won't be seeking out the others, and I don't really recommend these first two. My ratings for each story and for the book as a whole are below:

The Werewolf's First Night: 3/5
P.S. Don't Write Back: 2/5
Something Fishy: 1/5
You Gotta Believe Me! : 2/5
Suckers! : 1.5/5
Dr. Horror's House of Video: 1.5/5
The Cat's Tale: 3/5
Shell Shocker: 4/5
Poison Ivy: 2/5
The Spirit of the Harvest Moon: 1/5

= 21/50 = 42% = 2.1 stars

It's great to sit down and go story by story with the kid.

Brings me back to when I first picked these up at the old bookfair in elementary school.

The short stories aren't quite as good as the longer one, but my favorite was the one about the cat!

I am a 21 year old guy and I bought this book expecting to be terrified out of my skin. I mean, this R.L. Stine guy, whoever he is, promises on the cover that these stories will "give you goosebumps". I did not get goosebumps while reading these stories. They were silly. He should write about really scary things, like mortgages and the economy and door-to-door salesmen.

This was... disappointing.

Definitely one of the worst Goosebumps books for me. I really liked the first story and the rest... well, I could barely hang on. I finished it, because it's a series of short stories that I could pick away at, but I wasn't impressed. This series teeters off at times, and this is one of them.

I'm also curious if this was ghost written...

Either way, I didn't enjoy this one. But I will get through all of the Goosebumps books.

One out of five stars.

I did a werewolf marathon awhile back and chose to read this for the first story in the book and read the rest while I was at it. And I have to say, for some of the stories being some of my all-time favorites, I’m not really impressed with this book. This book specifically is the vacation themed book and for the most part the book stuck to its theming. I’ll give a run-down what I thought of the individual stories (in case you didn’t know, Tales To Give You Goosebumps is a series with 10 short stories per book). And at the very end, say what I actually rated it based on my scale. The main 3 attributes I look for are : originality, ability to tell a concise story given the page constraints, and ability to convey horror.

The Werewolf’s First Night (3/5⭐️)
- I wanted to love this one but this story got a bit too cliche for my liking. Had some interesting concepts but I feel this story wasn’t fully realized and borrowed too much from existing pop-culture references when it comes to camp stories. Felt too much like something we’ve already seen before. But after all that being said, it was decent enough to to be passable.

P.S. Don’t Write Back (4.5/5⭐️)
- I was quite impressed by this story. It felt sad throughout the read and twists and turns I didn’t see coming. It had this creepy thriller vibe to it I quite enjoyed. The only thing I dislike about this story is how silly the story comes off by the end. Won’t spoil.

Something Fishy (1/5⭐️) (WORST STORY)
- Ay yi yi. This story has a plethora of issues that can turn up in any Goosebumps book or story. It just happens to have all of them. Unlikable character, no logic behind the plot or explanation of anything by the end, stupid premise that literally involves a kid touching water to get shrunken to the size of a fish in a fish bowl (not making this up), and the ending is so stupid for the character I lost any shred of hope that this story was going to impress me in anyway. Stupid premise, dislikable character, nothing explained, and a crappy ending to add a cherry on top of this turd sandwich.

You Gotta Believe Me! (1.5/5⭐️)
- Not the worst story in this collection but I wouldn’t say it was THAT terrible compared to others. I inherently despise the “You Gotta Believe Me!” set up for a Goosebumps story (consider this story the template). The entirety of the story is spent around a character trying to convince people aliens are coming. Reminds me of Chicken Little, for all of the wrong reasons. That’s all I’ll say without spoiling. The twist was decent enough to not land it lower in the 1⭐️ range but it’s not a 2⭐️ story either.

Suckers! (2.5/5⭐️)
- Wasn’t a huge fan of this but it had its moment to shine. Having a mysterious chest caught interest initially but once it was revealed be a gelatinous monster with suckers on its arms detracted me. Until the motives for the characters changed to get revenge on some bullies. The ending was the saving grace for me on this. Mildly childish, but I’ll let it slide for how it turned out by the end.

Dr. Horror’s House Of Video (5/5⭐️) (BEST STORY)
- This was the only story in here I flat out loved. But it’s deserved. I enjoy kids with horror passions. I immediately connect to those characters. This one is no exception. The entirety of this story felt like top shelf Are You Afraid Of The Dark? more so than Goosebumps, but I actually mean this as a compliment. It commentates on a few things like trusting strangers and I don’t want to spoil anything but I’ll leave you with a taste. A kid vacationing finds a once in a lifetime video store while on vacation and finds that this video store sells movies he has never seen before and he desperately wants to watch the movies. But an opportunity that’s even cooler than that comes up and the meta breaks out in a messed up fashion.

The Cat’s Tale (3.75/5⭐️)
- The precursor to Cry Of The Cat was a solid entrance in this book. I enjoyed the villain being a cat, since I’m a cat lover. But truly this stories major edge is that it’s well paced, FOR A SHORT STORY. Everything I would want in a story from this series is in this. But I do have a heavy drawback. The ending left a little to be desired but it wasn’t the worst ending. I would’ve liked to see a different direction personally. I can’t quite bring myself to say it’s very good but it’s on the high end of good.

Shell Shocker (5/5⭐️)
- Wow. This story is MESSED UP. I really don’t want to spoil this one but essentially a girl finds a shell on the beach that can communicate with her. Despite her instincts, she listens to the shell and it may or may not have been a wise decision to listen to it. Incredibly horrific to think about what happens in this story, really dark, and a highlight of the book for sure.

Poison Ivy (4/5⭐️)
- This one felt really unique for the book. I give it an above average or very good score because it was good enough to like but not good enough to praise. There are something’s done that felt a bit generic, and uninspired. But the overall experience was entertaining enough to give it an above average score. No spoilers on this one. If I gave a hint, think plants but deadly. Also, super freaking creepy to me because I’m incredibly allergic to poison ivy.

The Spirit Of The Harvest Moon (1.5/5⭐️)
- Easily one of my least favorite stories in this book and in the series all together. This one is so predictable I don’t even need to spoil. A girl hear’s a legend in the mountain lodge town she’s vacationing at that there’s these ghosts are around that like to switch bodies with the living because it gets so cold. Near the end, her dog escapes and we get a twist that I won’t spoil but use what I shared and there you go. Not impressed with this story at all.

I initially wanted to give this book a flat 3⭐️ rating but I settled on a 3.2 because the that’s what the stars added to (this is one of only 2 books in this series I have no bonus points to). This book affirms the stigma I have about this series as a whole. You may get 4 or 5 stories to like and 4 or 5 stories that didn’t really work for you or you dislike them. I will say this book has an overall appreciation from me because a good majority were pretty scary. Just the originality was hit or miss and the ability to convey a competent story was also not the strongest as a whole in this book. I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend this one, but there are a few stories I’d say are worth your time. So have at it if you’d like!

The Werewolf's First Night -
I feel like there are underlying themes in here that is presented in the ending but it results to the plot being kinda pointless.
Not gonna say too much because I might spoil them consider these stories are 10 pages long.
1.5 / 5 ⭐

P.S. Don't Write Back -
It's okay enough, this one I feel is the most ambigously spooky and I love that but I didn't get much out of it.
2 / 5 ⭐

Soemthing Fishy -
Okay enough story, atleast it's entertaining than the previous two but the story is just stupid but slightly fun.
1.75 / 5 ⭐

You Gotta Believe Me!
My favorite of all the stories here, nothing original or groundbreaking but entertaining and intriguing formulaic story
3 / 5 ⭐

Suckers! -
Boring.
1 / 5 ⭐

Dr Horror's House of Video -
Has a really cool setup, relatable character but it goes downhill on the last like 3 pages
2.5 / 5 ⭐

The Cat's Tale -
You can't just condense Cry of the Cat into 10 pages and make it good.
(even though this came first)
1 / 5 ⭐

Shell Shocker -
Okay story but it just starts the story to just lead on that random ass illogical ending
1.25 / 5 ⭐

Poison Ivy -
The only thing great in here is the ending but the rest are boring.
1.25 / 5 ⭐

Spirit of the Harvest Moon -
Boring.
1 / 5 ⭐

Overall, the whole collection is mid. I only have one standout favorite of story here but that's not even a thing I might not revisit back or can't compare it to others. rest of them are mediocre and downright sucked. and no surprise since most short story collections, not just the Goosebumps short story collections, are a mixbag.

Following Tales to Give You Goosebumps Stine is back with ten more short Goosebumps stories. Interestingly, More Tales to Give You Goosebumps is themed around summertime, so prepare for lots of stories about going away to camp because somehow, despite Welcome to Camp Nightmare , The Horror at Camp Jellyjam , Ghost Camp , and The Curse of Camp Cold Lake , Stine still had more ideas for spooky camp-based stories.

The Werewolf's First Night
The first short story here is okay, but it doesn't really offer anything special and we've seen Stine tackle werewolves before with The Werewolf of Fever Swamp and Werewolf Skin . The twist ending is very predictable, so not the strongest start to More Tales to Give You Goosebumps.

P.S. Don't Write Back
Now this is a truly great Goosebumps short story - immediately keying into a subject that could be a genuine childhood concern. The twist isn't anything great, but the concept and set-up are excellent. This is easily one of my favourite short stories from this book.

Something Fishy
Going from such a strong short story to one of the weaker ones in this collection is a real shame. I don't think the concept here is too great, nor does it feel particularly well thought-out. At times I was a little confused as to exactly what is occurring because it just isn't described very well. The twist ending isn't too bad, but it's not exactly good either. Just an all-round disappointing entry.

You Gotta Believe Me!
There is a fragment of an idea here that is intriguing, but the execution isn't great and the conclusion is ridiculously quick and convenient. However, I actually really liked the fourth-wall break that occurs right at the end. I thought that was a nice touch that redeemed this story a little bit.

Suckers!
This pretty much feels like an alternative take on Monster Blood , and considering that book resulted in three sequels, I'm not sure if I really needed the idea once again. Like the previous short story, it all just feels a little underbaked with another quick and convenient ending that is starting to feel like some lazy writing.

Dr. Horror's House of Video
Just as I'm getting ready to write-off R.L. Stine as returning to resting on his laurels and phoning it in, we get another truly great short story. I very much enjoyed this - it doesn't do anything particularly special or innovative, but it takes the concept and just delivers it really really well - even including the predictable (if inevitable) twist.

The Cat's Tale
Okay, now I will confess, whilst I have found most of the twist endings in More Tales to Give You Goosebumps to be somewhat predictable, the twist ending here got me - I thought it was great. The rest of the short story is fine, certainly one of the better entries in this book, but it's the ending that I enjoyed most about this one. When Stine can successfully pull of a twist it can go a long way to redeeming a fairly okay story.

Shell Shocker
Despite obviously being aimed at children, I would say that the vast majority of Goosebumps stories that I have read never veer into preachy territory. Sure, there are lessons to be learned, but this entry really does seem to be doing some finger wagging about the perils of greed. I liked the twist - another one that I didn't predict - but the protagonist here is pretty insufferable so it can be a bit tedious getting to the satisfying conclusion.

Poison Ivy
This is another entry that is just okay, with nothing really new on offer here. There's a moment that I liked towards the end where the main characters are trapped, but it doesn't last for long. The rest of this short story is just very average.

The Spirit of the Harvest Moon
Stine ends strong, with some genuinely creepy moments in this last short story. Sure, the twist ending is another predictable one, but I liked it so I won't grumble too much. At times this was giving me Stolen Tongues vibes, which is an excellent horror book.

Like Tales to Give You Goosebumps , and what I suspect will be a trend throughout all of these short story collections, More Tales to Give You Goosebumps is another mixed bag. I liked the summertime setting as a thread running through this book, but it is disappointing that some of Stine's laziness starts creeping in here. I'm aware that Stine's output is incredible between Goosebumps and Point Horror and Fear Street - I'm not denying that he's truly impressive, and of course not everything can hit, but sometimes it is a little bit obvious when Stine is just churning the words out, and I can't help but be a little disappointed. However, with that said, I do think overall More Tales to Give You Goosebumps is a little bit stronger overall than Tales to Give You Goosebumps . There are some truly great short stories here, and thankfully not too many truly terrible ones.

Ratings of the short stories, on a five-star scale.

1. The Werewolf's First Night | *** (3 stars: Good build-up, but the character is too wimpy and gullible to take seriously. The end makes no sense.)

2. P.S. Don't Write Back | **** (4 stars: Pretty good, all things considered. Nice sense of dread and foreboding. Main character acted a little irrationally.)

3. Something Fishy | *** (3 stars: Was okay. Funny end. Not much characterization. Also, divorce in a Goosebumps book? I thought Stine wanted to avoided that.)

4. You Gotta Believe Me! | ** (2 stars: Decent idea, poor execution.)

5. Suckers! | * (1 star: Awful prose, no characterization, stupid plot.)

6. Dr. Horror's House of Video | * (1 star: Cliched, predictable, boring.)

7. The Cat's Tale | ** (2 stars: Could've been good, but dropped all sense of mystery halfway through. Could see the ending coming from a mile away.)

8. Shell Shocker | * (1 star: Awful in almost every way. The ending was nearly a spark of humour.)

9. Poison Ivy | *** (3 stars: The end was rather amusing; good humour throughout. Odd story. Typical Goosebumps tale.)

10. The Spirit of Harvest Moon | *** (3 stars: Average in most respects.)

FINAL COUNT: 3 dreadful, 2 poor, 4 decent, 1 good, and 0 excellent. 23/50 possible stars.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The camp stories end up being the best in this collection. The others are throw-away.

1. HPSMS
➕ Plot twist yang membuatku kaget pas baca pertama kali dan sampai sekarang masih ingat jalan ceritanya.
★4

2. PSJD
➕ Setelah aku lebih jeli dan mau berpikir, ada hal yang sudah ada jawabannya.
➖ Terlalu banyak hal mengganjal yang menghantuiku dan ceritanya mengingatkanku pada cerita lain.
★2

3. AIMI
➕ Ceritanya aneh, tapi lucu sehingga masih terngiang-ngiang entah berapa tahun.

7. SKM

8. KYI
➕ Pesan moral: jangan greedy.

9. TB
➕ "Nyamuk-nyamuk sedang push-up." di halaman 117.
➖ Lagi-lagi ada kemunculan masalah baru di menjelang akhir cerita. Berhubung aku enggak bisa merasakan kegawatannya, ending-nya terasa nanggung.

1. The Werewolf's First Night | ** (2 stars) Werewolves at a camp should have been cool, but typical of these short stories, it ends with a twist that makes no sense at all.

2. P.S. Don't Write Back | **** (4 stars) Best story in this collection, about a ghost camp across the lake.

3. Something Fishy | * (1 star) Boy becomes fish. That's literally the only thing that happens.

4. You Gotta Believe Me! | ** (2 stars) Boy foils alien plot with aluminum foil from the Dollar Store. Lame.

5. Suckers! | * (1 star) Fish monsters from a treasure chest are defeated by Gummi Worms or something. Dumb.

6. Dr. Horror's House of Video | ** (2 stars) Young boy hangs out in an abandoned building to film movies with a creepy old man. Yikes.

7. The Cat's Tale | *** (3 stars) Shorter, less successful ripoff of Cry of the Cat.

8. Shell Shocker | ** (2 stars) Weird kids listen to a voice in a shell that leads them to a cave.

9. Poison Ivy | **** (4 stars) Slightly interesting plot about a camp being overtaken by mutant plants that

10. The Spirit of Harvest Moon | *** (3 stars) Goosebumps trademarked awful parents leave their kid alone in a haunted cabin.

Would you enjoy reading it again:
Yes. It was a collection of short stories. Each short story took me about 30 mins to read (so each night before bed for ten nights). All of the stories were seemingly realistic and funny. All of the stories took place around the summer-time (so if I were to read it again then I should probably read it again around summer time) - 5

Did you enjoy the plot:
Plot was amazing/ unique. Every story was interesting and fun. All of the stories took place around summer-time, which is cool that it stuck to one season basically- 5

Did you enjoy the writing style:
Yes. Stine did a great job of helping the reader imagine things. Stine did a great job of making the events seem somewhat realistic (by the way the parents talk, how to kids think and everything). I like how Stine switched it up from some being first person and some stories being in third person- 5

Good ending?
Amazing. All of the different endings left me with a 'goosebump' ending, which was very enjoyable and usually unpredictable (some were predictable, but then I decided that truthfully was the best ending - and it was fun to guess if I could predict the correct ending or not). - 5

Format: physical book (paperback)
Average rating: 5 stars.

Incredible book. In my opinion, every story in this book is a 10/10.
My reviews for each story:
The Werewolf's First Night - 10/10
Works incredibly well as both a great camp story and a great werewolf story.
P. S. Don't Write Back - 10/10
Great book with a good amount of mystery. The abandoned camp is genuinely eerie at some points.
Something Fishy - 10/10
Incredibly fun story, reminds me of the Deep Trouble books.
You Gotta Believe Me! - 10/10
Alien story with great aliens.
Suckers! - 10/10
Fun little story with a great monster and a great ending.
Dr. Horrors House of Video - 10/10
Tied with Something Fishy and Suckers! as the most fun story in this book. Dr. Horror is a great character.
The Cat's Tale - 10/10
Kinda feels like a shorter version of Cry of the Cat.
Shell Shocker - 10/10
Interesting story with a fun ending.
Poison Ivy - 10/10
Great concept executed incredibly. Reminds me of The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill from Creepshow.
The Spirit of the Harvest Moon - 10/10
Simple ghost story with incredible execution.
Overall: 10/10

A collection of 10 summer horror stories that may or may not have been written by R.L Stine. Only 2 were awful but I think I only really enjoyed one of these, Dr. Horror's Video House.

The stories here were trying too hard to be morality tales for kids. Don't watch too much TV, don't talk to strangers, be nice to your pets, be a good boy at summer camp... it made me realize that Goosebumps doesn't normally lace their stories with morals, and I think that's part of why they were so popular. They simply existed to scare and creep kids out, not teach a lesson.

While the first tales book is spotty all throughout the book, and has lots of fun stories… more tales offers the fun stories but at the cost of the book being front loaded. All the good tales are in the first half, and the quality quickly disintegrates later on. Is it fun? At times. Is it a good summer read? Depends on who youd ask.

Cant like this one very much especially since its not a guilty pleasure like tales book 1 is to me.

I will say, for stories aimed at children and pre teens, a good amount of these are pretty creepy and actually kinda dark, which I like. As usual with anthologies some stories were better than others but I enjoyed most of them, I’d definitely recommend.

So much fun!

I always think R.L. Stine has the most amazing ideas, but a lot of times his books get bogged down by bad writing and/or stupid cliffhangers. With these being short stories, his talent for shocking you can truly shine.
