When a little bear neglects to drink the soup the other bears use to prepare for their winter sleep, she finds herself virtually alone, enjoying the solitary adventure until the wolves howl and she longs to join her slumbering family
This book was one of my favorites when I was a child. The illustrations are exquisite and the most colorful I have ever seen. The illustrator has a very unique style that makes this book very special. This book is about a little bear who is encountering her first winter. She follows the traditions of making sleep soup with her bear family and drinks up the whole bowl. As her family is making their way into the cave to hibernate she finds it will be more fun if she stays up for winter, but after a few adventures she soon finds she is very sleepy and must try her hardest to make her way back to the cave to sleep. This book is a very northwestern book. It depicts the mountains and the forests with the highlight being brown bears. Although this book isn’t very realistic or accurate the story could be a great way to talk about animals that hibernate in the winter and what hibernation means and what it is for. Although I am biased because I grew up with this book I think it would be a great one to have on the shelf od my classroom library.
